When a grid misaligns with a grid that's behind - that's a moire!
Bought my LG c3 77" openbox for 2000euros. No regrets, literally nothing wrong with it, imo. Still had the protective film on it, 14day return policy and 2 year warranty. Nothing wrong with open boxes tbh.
From your individual experience, you would extrapolate to say that "in every country in every store that ever sells open box TVs, there's nothing wrong with open boxes tbh" ?
@@MadViking82 As long as theres return policy and warranty included, hard to say no for the deals. For sure here in Finland its completely safe to buy open boxes and I wish it was the exact same thing everywhere.
@@Xofldkdjsl Sure, I don't disagree, but again you are assuming that a return policy and warranty is included. In many, many places I've visited around the world, they are really not included.
So why not just stop the extrapolation and assuming, and based on that jumping to the conclusion of "nothing wrong with open boxes!" generalization? What you can say is that in Finland there are laws and retailers that make it a much suitable option for the local consumer.
I'm not trying to nitpick, and say this with respect. I'm just a bit worried and hoping to save people the trouble of jumping into conclusions and buying an open box without understanding all what comes with it, be disappointed and stuck with the purchase. There's a reason it was asked on this program, and that is because it is not considered a 100% safe choice.
I guess it should be on the individuals who do not do their homework... At the same time, they do come here for that info as well.
Just bought a 65 LG OLED c3 for 1099.00 from 1799.99. They were LG refurbished from LG sealed back in new boxes with new remotes and all from Microcenter. 30 day return or dead pixels then 90 day 90 day manufacturer warranty. Bought 3 year accidental DMG for 219 as well.
Great job on explaining Moire' Effect. Overwhelmingly in the studio, men's shirts, sportcoats & ties would require them to change. Our cameras just couldn't deal with it. Women's clothing usually weren't a problem. Now, the Chroma-Key effect was an issue for everyone. The subtleties of blues & greens in a Chroma-Key would always be an issue requiring a wardrobe change. We would always ask talent or guests to come in early for a camera check. It would take only minutes, but save everyone the hassle later.
These are so good. Thanks for doing them. I'm sure it helps a lot of people make decisions.
Just bought a open box s89c in "excellent" condition from best buy for $1475. Was able to add the 5 year warranty, after tax came out to a total of just over $1900. Rolled the dice since I was able to add the warranty. Will be setting it up today and keeping my fingers crossed lol
What size did you get?
that was wonderful Caleb, you have helped me tremendously with your Q&A videos 👍
Digital Trends, I loved this video so much, I had to hit the like button!
Just got an open box excellent LG G3 a week ago. The only thing missing was the ir blaster and the plastic on the screen. The menu showed only 8-9 hours of use. I'd say for $1680 + tax I paid vs $2600 MSRP open box is very worth it.
I bought an open-box “geek squad certified” Sony A95K 65” that was basically new in box for 2200, and couldn’t be happier. Good return policy and easy to deal with.
Wow, nice deal. I love the stand on that TV. Should have got one
I asked the moire question. Thank you so much for the explanation! Big fan of the channel!
@digitaltrends and reducing the sharpness made a HUGE difference!!
I own 89c and it looks amazing. I tweak brightness/color and definitely 0 sharpness on most settings. Optimize mode seems to work really well to my eyes as well with few tweaks
I know what it is, we do a lot of photography. Never noticed on my LG C2 or C9.
Yea I've never noticed moire on my C2 or C9. Once u notice it u can't unsee it...
@@MichaelOrellana-qz6tlI always have my sharpness to zero. Maybe that's why I don't see it
I’m on pins and needles waiting for your S95D and G4 reviews! Coming soon… hopefully?
Looking forward to the U8N review.
Thanks Caleb for answering my question!
Hi Caleb, great video, I learn so much from you !
My LG B2 77” was listed on the vendor’s website as open box - if so it was meticulously repacked it was hard to tell - and aside from shipping delays that were not the seller’s fault, I was quite happy with the purchase. It took a lot of analysis paralysis to determine that my use case and budget couldn’t justify a top of the line model, and so far it’s been a monumental upgrade from my previous Vizio.
Bought a floor display model of the 82 inch q900r. They had it on for only like 2 months before shutting down for a while during the pandemic. Fast forward a few months later, i picked it up for 3400 bucks when it was a 10k tv. They even put a warranty on it. Love the tv. Its since been moved to another room for the 98" qn90a
I own two open box LG C9 from Best Buy. Both are still working perfect.
I bought an LG 55C7P open box in 2017 for like $400. Insane deal. Still works great. Its old but still quite snappy. Only in the last year has it started to get a weird line down the middle where one side is just barely brighter than the other. Its only noticeable on really bright grey scenes like when a scene includes the sky.
Fantastic video this week. Very interesting topics and I always wondered about heat issues with respect to LG’s no-gap mount.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Open box a80j 77inch from a local reseller. Small scratches on the metal back panel corner. It was probably during some unboxing movement. No warranty and I got a great price (hundreds below Best Buy open box). Tv has been going perfect for the last 2.5 years.
I always try to buy open box. My main tv TCL 65R635 was a floor model, $900 OTD over $1200 new. 3 years no issues
I learned what Moiré effect is, so that's cool!
my LG 55C7P from 2017 was open box. I worked at Best Buy at the time and saw I could grab it for $400. Thing had been on for a year non stop. Still works in 2024. Only thing is that there is a slight difference in brightness on each side of the screen and its a straight line down the middle. Only noticeable on bright scenes. Otherwise its still snappy and works well.
Bought my 75” Sony display model “open box” and it is perfectly fine. 😊
Two high end Samsung open box tvs currently in my house. One still going strong for over 10 years and the other over 4 years. No issues, but I dont believe either were display TVs based on checking the hours of use in the service panel menu when first purchased. Both had low hours on them.
I bought a open-box 48" LG C3 for $800 and it's been great!
I bought an open boxed Sony receiver from Amazon, it was supposedly "like new". Well once I saw it for myself I was a bit shocked. It had a huge dent on the top and the knobs were incredibly stiff with scratches on them and also the back was scratched up. To be fair it still worked fine, but it had ton of cosmetic damage and was FAR from Like New.
My Sony OLED was open box refurb and has worked perfectly for years
Thanks! I wondered why my tv wouldn't allow my Dolby Atmos speakers to play via the arc. Wow, that really makes sense. They couldn't digitally handshake 😂
I got a killer deal ($1799 before taxes) on a 77A80K OLED "refurb." 2 year warranty. Thus far it has performed flawlessly, about 8 months in. It had maybe 75 hours on the panel when I received it. Fingers crossed!
I got 65 LG C2 open box from crutchfield zero issues screen was perfect condition
Thank you for the answer regarding Open Box tv’s Caleb. I guess the answer is- if someone bought the tv and returned it for a non defective reason it might be a good deal. If it is a 1 year old Floor Model that has been used daily- probably best to stay away. Keep up the awesome videos!
I won’t say completely write off all floor models. I bought a demo Sony 55” X90D and it lasted me a good 7 years.
Very eager to see your Roku Pro Series review!
I bought an open box top of the line Sony flat screen, actually a display model from Sears over 15 years ago. It's been my main TV and I haven't had a problem except with the clunky remote which was always clunky. But I have an Apple streamer and that is the only remote that I need.
I purchased two demo units of the legendary Sony Z9D from Best Buy in 2019. They still have an amazing picture. That TV is now 8 years old, and I would put it up against any current led TV
It's blurred, but I clearly recognize that Patrice Rushen album cover on your shelf back there.👍
I got a testament for open box, always check for the quality and run it through the store as to why did the people return it but most times its a good deal, a 65" C3 brand new was close to $1700 in my local best buy but i found a open box in a good condition and it only was $1200 and the tv looks brand new i got no complaints :)!
Bought a Samsung 55" Open Box TV at Best Buy years ago that was Certified by their Geek Squad crew and when I got home and turned it on, the volume went up to 100 without me touching the remote or the TV.
Unplugged it and started it again and it did it again multiple times so I returned it and have never trusted open box items from Best Buy again. Even if it's Geek Squad Certified.
Open box can be used to describe display unit playing for 13 hrs a day everyday for a year. Happened to be at best buy when I went to look at s95c 77
Years ago I got the craziest deal on a 65in b8 OLED for 800 bucks when it was new at over 2000. It was missing the remote and the screws to attach the base to the TV. There was a single stuck on pixel that was far enough out of central vision that I almost never noticed it. Only had to buy a 50 dollar replacement remote and a dollar worth of screws at a hardware store.
Caleb, Regarding the question about a receiver without a ARC HDMI port - How about connecting the ARC port of the TV to a normal HDMI input on the receiver? Wouldn't the receiver accept the audio signal output by the TV just like it would accept audio from any other component?
65" LG c3. I see moire effect mostly on rooftop shingles. Bought refurbished with 0 hours of viewing for $999. No issues.
You may have already mentioned this in a prior video, however, has Sonos considered developing a control box with eArc so we can hook up five or more 300 speaker? You know like a Sony HT-a9 but with an actual center channel. Thanks!
I really am considering buying the LG C3 but I was torn on whether to wait until fall for the LG G3/C4 to go on sale. I have a gift card to bestbuy that I won through work and its a nice chunk so that will give me a discount so I want to get the most I can for my buck for picture quality. I dont need to buy it right this second which is why Im trying to do my homework.
Moire' is also caused by the nature of how the LCD panel is constructed. It is more present in a 1080p set vs a 4k set due to how far apart the pixels are. DLP has the issue too, but not as bad.
I bought a Vizio h1 65” from bb for $700 otd with a 5 year warranty. It was a demo unit that never got used. I love it. But my plan is to trade it in after a year or two. It has an imperfect panel in certain shades. I love OLED but my next tv is going to be a big as possible and after 2 oleds I’m of the opinion that size is more important.
I got a question. Does the stand that’s included with the G4 work on the G3?
Caleb, I’m patiently waiting on your U8N review
I tried to get a 55inch, 120hz open box deal. Well I got a 55inch tv. I think the brand was different from the one advertised on the website, but the box cover was the same as the thumbnail though.
Any new info or update regarding 110 Hisense ux?
Really good episode with interesting questions and great answers!
Hi Caleb, i love the show. My question is how long does samsung support their tv s with software updates. I have a 2020 q70t and it didn't get an update for a while now. I like to watch in film mode with contrast enhancer on medium setting, but after a while, the picture just darkens back, and doesn't change if i cycle through the contrast enhancer settings. After a restart, it works for a while, but it's not a permanent fix. Tried factory reset too and it didn't solve the problem. I'm pretty sure that it's a software bug, but if it doesn't get updates anymore, it's it time to upgrade for a new tv, or is there a way to downgrade or roll back the software on it?
I see that Alicia Myers on the shelf. Great album
I always thought an 'open box' electrical product was a term retailers used to get around selling an item below the manufacturers lowest selling price. For instance if the retailer was overstocked on on a particular model that wasn't selling or selling fast enough they would advertise as open box to get around it. I work for a manufacturer and we have a strict policy of not allowing our distributors to advertise our products below a certain price because it just devalues the product. All it does is force the price down because other distributors react and it just keeps reducing the margin and making our product less profitable for our distributors to sell. I know some will say you can't tell people what price they sell for and I agree, but you can cut off the future supply to them. Sadly some have the mentality of if we're the cheapest we'll get most of the orders and especially with online orders without realising their competition will react and the price cutting just goes on and on.
Hi. First time writing to you. I just bought a Samsung S95C and every youtube reviewer recommends to set movie/filmmaker mode to warm 2 setting, becuse that is color accurate. But when I do that the picture takes up a yellow tint, hue which dosn't look natural at all. I've read others experienced the same thing so I assume it's not a unique problem for me. But what is it then? I mean I've had a Sony from 2018 and the warm setting on it didn't make it this yellow. Should I call for a professional who can set the TV or is this Samsung's own idea of color accurate picture. Thanks for the help and keep up the good work.
When can we expect the g4 full review?
On the topic of "Open Box Unit", do any of the top 3 (Sony, Samsung, LG) have the equivalent of an Elapsed Time Indicator (ETI) register that can be accessed through a setup/maint screen or via an IP port? That would go a long way to assuaging my fears about being a showroom display unit with 30+% of its life already used up.
I thought the G-series 5 year warranty was panel only. Everything else was just under the 1 yr warranty. Am I wrong in that?
The tv I own was an open box tv when I bought it. 8 years later and I’m yet to experience any problems
I’ve bought a ton of open box tv’s and soundbars from Best Buy. Never had an issue, maybe I’ve just been lucky.
When I worked retail, the floor TVs would be repackaged and sold as new. Once the TV's remote got lost and the owner went out and bought a random universal remote to put in the box.
Makes sense on monitors that are close to you… my sister and brother in law bought a 3D curved Samsung back when the hype was around. The curve was Completely pointless as most knew 😂 didn’t add anything.
I probably wouldn’t do open box for a TV.
The aspect ratio (screen size) doe not work for streaming content on Hisense 75U8K. Why? Google TV on Hisense only?
Absolutely can hear a difference between TrueHD vs Dolby Digital Plus however it certainly doesn’t mean Dolby Digital Plus cause you’re still getting Atmos!! 🎉
When the moonlight hits your eye like a big pizza pie that’s amorie’. :)
Man I got so lucky I bought one from Best Buy and it’s still kicking today
And here I was thinking "moray" was a type of eel 😜
Okay, but can we get that sharpness setting deep dive in another video?
Good afternoon, could you make a program on QM 855 of 2024?
When considering an open box TV check out the mfg date on the back of the unit. My experience is that BB will mix in their legitimate open box TVs with their demos. If the mfg date is more than 4 or 5 months, pass on it.
Open box is best after big sales, like Christmas or Super Bowl. Good bargains can be had.
I’ve bought two open box items from Best Buy and had to take them both back due to issues that weren’t disclosed. Never again.
Best Buy wanted to sell me an Open Box Sony Bravia XR 4k OLED 77" A95L for only $400 less than brand new. It was the stores display model for months. They didn't have a new one available in store or for order. I didn't buy it.
Great Taste 🎶 Patrice Rushen
My take away from this is that Patrice rushen album in the background 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Just Fyi Qvc list a 55" curved samsung tv on their website.
OLED probably not Mini LED yeah.
Not a question but heard the phrase used in conversation and thought you all might like another merch slogan idea. "I'm a nit-nerd of course I'm a bit nit-picky" or something along those lines.
I bought my Samsung Curved in 2016 and held onto it for dear life because despite what all the wierdo's say it was the most enjoyable TV experience i had. Even guest would comment on that. But i just bought an replaced with the S90C and i havent regretted it but i dearly miss my curved Tv
No, Moiré is an optical interference pattern forming from fine detail interacting with the physical pixel grid. higher density screens, ie. more physical resolution is the only solution. (or rather its two very fine physical patterns interacting with each other, doesn't have to be digital at all)
Or just better content that doesn't have that effect baked into it
@@karlhendrikse it is not about the content. if you have fine lines (like fabric) in your motive, it will interfere with the physical pattern of your screens. it not an effect htat is baked in, it happens on your end on your screen.
With regards to the arc/eARC question…why are your devices plugged into the tv and running audio out from your TV to the receiver? If you have a receiver all your devices should be plugged into the receiver (the brain) let it do the auto processing out to the speakers and only one hdmi cable out to the tv for video.
Latency (and things like 4K120 that your receiver might not support). You have to make a tradeoff between video latency and audio latency.
What is moire effect.
20 hours till the Bravia 2024 lineup reveal!
If you watch a lot of TH-cam videos, would you still choose the larger TV? Doesn’t the size become too jarring or the poor production of a lot of TH-cam videos too obvious with a larger screen?
Samsung still sell a lot of curved TVs, not intentionally 〰️
Why are people so obsessed with TVs? I bought my OLED C1 and it's great, no need to ever buy another display again until it fails or some major new technology comes along. I had my HD CRT TV since 2006 until I bought this one, LCDs just weren't as good and neither were the early OLEDs and yeah it was only 720p/1080i, but it doesn't matter when it is 32 inch and you do not see pixels like LCD/OLED. Before that I had the same TV I had since a child in the 80s, that lasted until 2006.... So I really do not get why people act like you have to buy a TV every year. The same with PCs and phones, my 4770K/750ti PC lasted from 2014 until 2023, it still played everything fine at 1080p, it got 30FPS on Cyberpunk. My phone as well is a Google Pixel 5 that I've had 3 to 4 years and it's still fine, no need to buy a new one.
Whenever I watch a love story on a TV with bad processing I just think that's amoire
My LG 2D to 3D tv was a Walmart store demo & lasted me a long while. It was the only 3D tv at my price point and last one they had so they took it down along with money off of it for me. I miss using it & wished they brought them back again.
I love the new model names with Bravia makes so super sense! No more stupid letters and number that makes it confusing. So super excited to pick up the Bravia 7
They should just not allow to sell demo units to customers whatsoever. So many capacitors and colors being degraded over time.
Come on dude wheres the g4 review😊
Do you think 98 inch tv requires 8K?
I was funny if you can take the L Gc 4. Thank you very much to the Sony a Nine
No, because presumably your distance to the TV is directly proportional to its size
Open box =Dead Pixels or other issues
Negative, bought 3 different Oled sets, "Open Box", 0 issues. Always check the screen "on" time, and do the burn-in test, you'll never go wrong...😉
@@bigcdub Sure you did. Thanks for info Troll.
@@DeepDishPizza I guess that’s what happens when you’re used to being lied to, I’m so worried because some clown on the internet can’t cope…😂
@@DeepDishPizzaOnly Troll here is you bro, you mad cause you ain’t got nothing, stop hating on the man, you can easily get open box sets that aren’t defective and anyone who actually owns one from BB knows this
Lmao, that's a lie I've bought a set open box with no issues. This is the type of bs broke people say😂
You probably wouldn’t be surprised to hear how many TV’s we have returned due to the wife saying it’s too big.
That’s what she said(?)
So when you reviewing the G4 and S95D. Many others have reviewed them already. What gives?
Isn't it where are* the Curved TV's?
Yeah, I have my 77 inch Samsung still in my bedroom and I love it. The colors are very bright on it. Last of the curves.
Without seeing this video. Personally no because there is a reason why it's open box and you will not know what the actual reason is unless you talk to the person that owned it and returned it directly which stores won't allow nor will they actually know who returned what for what reason on everything or anything
That doesn't matter at all, you still have a warranty, and a return policy. Take it home, do the Oled Burn-In test, check the screen "on time", if everything looks good, keep it, and you still have two weeks to change your mind...
@@bigcdub for the most part you dont. the warranty would be voided in the eyes of the manufacturer for some BS reason they want to try and claim. like "you bought an open box, you knew it was damaged so you took the risk for it" and most stores on open box, only have a 7 day return, 30 if you are lucky and some dont have one at all depending in the item of course for the same reason. the company is there to make money, a return is a loss to the company.
@@teacher555555 Wrong. Best Buy has a 14 day return policy for all “Open Box” items, and you still get the warranty. I’ve bought 3 sets, with warranty, and the return policy, and the oldest set I’ve had for 2 years with no problems yet.
@@teacher555555 Negative, BB has a 14 day return policy on open box, and they give you the warranty the same as when you buy a new one, the only exception is buying a demo model, in which case you don’t get the return or warranty…
@@bigcdub that is what i am talking about. according to their website. normal returns are given 15 days on most products and 14 days on activatable devices. with their membership it goes up to 60 days on most items and remains 14 days for others. so overall you are not getting anything more from BB than buying new vs open box but saving some money but you still do not know why the person returned the item in the first place. now depending on time of the year, most returns are simple, wrong product and exchanged for the correct one the person wanted but some times this is not always the case.
Never buy an open box.
April 17th is a day that will live in infamy! Sony will be releasing the future of television!
