I'm glad that you do video reviews on these extremely boring vehicles, because (wait for cliche) *at the end of the day* , these are the vehicles that the vast majority of us end up purchasing. After spending hours and hours watching motor sports porn, and drooling over exotic cars and SUV's that we will never realistically be able to afford, reality must eventually be served.

There is a "sport" trim here in Canada but it is really just looks and options and not really performance. The sportiest thing is that it gets 19" rims without being the touring or black edition.
My almost 70 year old parents just got one (Sport 2020) and it really is as is said in the review. Does everything very competently but doesn't blow the doors off in one specific category. They cost less than a RAV for the same general trim level and not by only a couple hundo. The interior is fantastic and as an owner of the 3rd gen, this 5th gen is a massive upgrade in basically every way. Except still no real sport.

I really dislike CVTs holding ratios like that; it's entirely marketing so the buyers who wouldn't buy manual transmissions can still feel like it's "normal". However, it's removing the one advantage CVTs have - the continuous variability.

    • @vgamedude12
      @vgamedude12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I wish they'd just make them work like they're supposed to. If it's the only automatic being offered, people WILL get used to it. Too bad if they don't like it (I prefer manual transmissions; I've driven every kind except single clutch automated manual and currently have a CVT Corolla. I dislike the fake shifts, but stay light on the throttle, and it will just dully vary)

    • @FoodFighter46

CVTs are popular in Japanese vehicles over DCT because of different road conditions. In Japan, we have tons of stop& go situation, so DCT's not so great initial acceleration isnt desired. On the other hand, CVT doed smoothe acceleration. It may not suit for Americans though.

I'll take the RAV4, no turbo-charged engine causing more wear and tear and BS fuel mileage from a dyno read, not real life. No dual injection, so expect caking up of the intake valves in the future and the BS simulated shift CVT. Making simulated shifts on a CVT because the public is to stupid to understand how and why a CVT operates the way it does is ignorance on the manufacturer as well. TOYOTA all the way.

I’m still not a fan of the 1.5 liter turbo charged engine & CVT transmission. I’d much rather have the RAV4 with a normally aspirated engine & conventional automatic transmission. Less ( & cheaper ) maintenance & both engine & transmission will last MUCH longer. CVT has to have fluids changed every 30,000 miles & you cant repair them if they go bad. Also, there is still oil dilution problems no matter what Honda says. I own a Honda Civic but it has the bulletproof 2.4 liter engine

You hardly touched base on the oil dilution issue. Huge problem. What did Honda do to fix the issue in the next model years? Also what is the downsize of a turbo rather than a naturally aspirated engine???? There have been many who have said this engine will not last as long as Honda's other naturally aspirated engines of the past. Also, the shifting sounds heard in the cabin, were these artificial sounds put in the cabin by Honda so it sounds like a standard transmission? Also some buyers are using the CRV to haul small RVs. Pros or negatives on hauling with a CVT transmission ? I still own a 2009 3rd generation CRV which I bought new and have had so little problems with it that I continue to drive it. I would not buy this new generation with the Turbo. Makes the engine do double the workload in small displacement and thus will wear out the engine prematurely. Also the oil dilution issue is a problem and I have yet to hear from Honda what they have done to rectify it. Software is not it. It was a manufacturing defect with the cylinder displacement. Honda has not come clean.

"Works untill it doesn't". This is what I think about a small turbo and a CVT in a big vehicle.
Especially when in USA you guys can get RAV4 and CX-5 with 2.5l NA gasoline and a conventional torque converter AT.
Where I live, Japan, only Mazda still offers that. I really hope new CX-5 offers more trunk. Fortunately there is still CX-8 that is a great SUV. The only SUV that fits all my requirements: standard AT, good engine, AWD and usable trunk.
New Forester will be 1.8T soon, RAV4 comes with a CVT in Japan and smaller engine.

The world is a big place and that’s a good thing because your ego barely fits in it. I’m 18- not 65 so go easy on a kid. It’s not that important. Just because you write comments like a retired PhD with nothing but time on your hands for a TH-cam audience doesn’t mean you are above me Waldemar. The infotainment screen is buggy and turns off randomly, also my phone takes an eternity to pair although that might be on my phone not the car, 2. The emergency braking system will randomly flash and apply the brakes when there is no on in front of you, our Honda dealership says they have had several complaints but can't replicate anything. On ANY CRV review, this needs to be vented: I have an intense hate for CRVs but it's not for the vehicle itself but the caliber of drivers they attract to them. I know I'm not alone. The motorcycle community knows EXACTLY what I'm talking about. I try to rail against stereotypes but one can only ignore those ridiculous vertical taillights so many times before they turn into the beacon of the driver who is barely invested in anything that stretches beyond the 110º eyes forward range of vision.
This is the driver whose convinced they know the rules of the road but they haven't looked into driving laws since they got their drivers license 40 years ago in a different state than they now reside.
This is the left lane bandit, not a self righteous one but the one where it barely occurs to check the rearview mirror more than once every 30 minutes to see the glacier of cars behind them as they are in a neck and neck elephant race with an 18-wheeler.
The one who has the reaction time of a container ship.
The one guaranteed to misread traffic pattern directions, nearly causing three traffic accidents behind them while they cut over three lanes processing the information slower than a 28K modem attached to an Apple II.
The one who but by the grace of all the built in nannies will still seem to be lacking, will certainly not know you're there.
This is the driver you actually may refuse to ride with for fear of your own life.
If the stock market were as predictable as the majority CRV drivers' complete ineptitude to the business of driving in almost every way, I would be trailing Bezos in the top 5.
If I have one comfort, it's that 9 times out of 10, I know exactly what to expect from a CRV and therefore I avoid, fear them, know that I must be extra alert around them.
For you few CRV drivers who are awake, I'm sorry to lump you in with the rest, it's a good vehicle with a majority clientele who likely wouldn't drive if they had a choice, and it shows.
    Rant over.

I wonder if we could help by clubbing together to pay for a top therapist to treat your issues? Modifying tired old memes about this, that, or the other vehicle brand/model driver shows a distinct problem that needs urgent treatment.

@@hedydd2 Nothing more or less than pattern recognition. You see enough makes/models do the same gaffs over and over regardless of who's driving, it starts to speak to the personality type that would buy a CRV in the first place. Not all who drive CRVs are bad drivers but I've noticed most who drive CRVs exhibit similar driving behaviors that are generally aloof, unaware, sluggish, overly cautious as to almost be dangerous and unskilled. Save your time and money on me, buy anyone who purchases or owns a CRV refresher courses in driving.

You are deluded. Over and over the same meme is used for all kinds of brands, particularly German ones and Volvo. It's all complete rubbish. It's in your head man! Get it seen to.

I don't find the oil dilution to be a make or break issue, myself. I do see it becoming a problem for the average soccer dad who only changes his oil 4 months after the dash says 0% oil life.
