2019 Honda CR-V | Family Review

  • Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. The 2019 Honda CR-V is a compact SUV that’s won a zillion awards over the years at KBB. Not coincidentally my family car is also a CR-V. Specifically, a 2008 Honda CR-V EX-L trim with more than 100,000 miles on it. Having already reviewed our old personal CR-V it seemed wise to also review and compare it to a new CR-V.
With 11 years of development since our family’s CR-V was build, the 2019 CR-V is objectively superior in nearly all regards. It’s faster, quieter, more efficient, and much safer thanks to active driver assist technologies like lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking. The 5th generation CR-V (2017-Present) also retains the outstanding space management traits my wife and I love in our 3rd generation CR-V (2006-2011).
In this video my wife and I compare our used Honda CR-V to a new 2019 CR-V painted a very similar color. Along the way we discuss interior comfort, cargo space, child seat installations, safety features, styling, and, naturally, toilet paper. I also relinquish the steering wheel to get my wife’s opinion on how the 2019 CR-V feels versus her 2008 CR-V.
And just so the premise is ultra-clear, this is not a definitive review but rather a fun look at the 2019 Honda CR-V, while I live my normal life. Simple. Fun! #MicahDrives

Secondly you’ve convinced me after watching MANY CRV videos that it’s not for me. I drove one back in 2015 and I remember feeling meh. I get the same sense from your ride. Not from anything you did but just the general feeling. Keep up the great content!

I bought a 2017 EX brand new.I also noticed first thing that the steering wheel won't come down low enough to relax the shoulders a bit in the "8-4" position I like for cruising.True also the elbow padding is poor on the armrest and console. The Acura RDX version of this car is well padded. The biggest drag is the half second delay when hitting the gas you spoke of .I believe it is a seriously dangerous problem. I also got a recall fix to the smelly "CRV oil dilution" problem. It seems better now. The shifter console has a corner that jams into my knee. Please give us Highlander type leg clearance please Honda !The other features are great,a keeper !

A turbo, a CVT, and oil dilution problems..NO THANKS. The CR-V is a modern day station wagon. Lets take a bet on what will happen first: 1) the turbo will burn up and need to be replaced. 2) the oil dilution problem (with these 1.5 liter engines) will ruin the engine.

I've had one since 2017 and the CVT and Turbo lag really isn't that bad - unless you keep it in Eco mode with the little green leaf icon. I also have a 22 yo Prelude SH, so I understand the stark contrast between old and new hondas.

  • @rich3419

I've always been a bit sensitive to reliability and this CR-V power train design with the 1.5 turbo (always a red flag) coupled with that nasty sounding, belt driven CVT is downright scary - and for good reason. We have the well publicized oil dilution problem which has silenced everyone at my local dealers. Then we have the parasitic battery drain problem caused, apparently by, a runaway PCM module which refuses to go to sleep. What bothers me most is the way Honda is handling it, much in the way Hyundai handled its engine problems - deny, deny, deny (while quietly sending out SBs to its dealers). It's a cesspool of problems out there and I believe the days of long time hold-ems is gone. Three year leases and run.

My understanding is that short drives and cold climates contribute to the oil dilution issue. There was a software update for 2017 and 2018 to help the engine heat more quickly to more easily vaporize fuel in the oil. Honda also extended the warranty by 1 year.
Based on where I live and my risk tolerance, I would have no concerns buying a CR-V with the 1.5L. But the equation might be different in your home.

Avoid it like the plague. Honda refuses to fix the problem and their 'software' fix is only a band-aid. It does not actually fix the problem. Apparently Honda fixed it for 2019 and later, but they refuse to fix it for prior year models of all vehicles with the 1.5L Turbo. Even in So CA, we get below 30 degree weather in the winter, so it is still a problem. All Hondas prior to 2019 with the 1.5L Turbo have the problem.

This video is quite old compared to when I am seeing it. However, I see you had the ECO mode on and saying the acceleration is not good. If you take the ECO mode off, you made get better acceleration. I have a 2017 CRV and a 2020 Telluride. The CRV acceleration definitely feels stronger than the Telluride V6 on Sport mode.

You should have gone for a short drive and then check the motor oil for gasoline smell:)

I recently bought a 2021 and the steering wheel not going lower annoys me. I didn’t pay it as much attention as I should have on test drives.

Btw, starting with the 2020 CR-V they are dropping the 2.4L engine, so even the LX will have the 1.5L turbo. And all trim levels will also have Honda Sensing as standard.
And the big news is the addition of a CR-V Hybrid.

I love these family reviews. You should do more profanities. Maybe you can invent words that would not require sensorship. Or, just learn to curse in finnish. Finnish has the best curse words anyhoo. For example: "PERKELE" or "HELVETTI"

Micah, I've noticed in many reviews of different vehicles from different manufacturers you always complain that the steering wheel doesn't go low enough, I wonder if it's an actual issue or you just like your wheel abnormally low? Lol

    • @MicahMuzio
      @MicahMuzio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Manpreet Singh It’s true. I love a steering wheel that adjusts low. That makes it easier to hold the wheel at 8 and 4 when cruising and still use the arm rests. It also means an easier reach when driving quickly with my hands at 9 and 3.
Long story short, as a driver who uses both hands to steer I appreciate a highly adjustable steering wheel.

My wife has the same car and every time I drive it I can't find a comfortable seating position in it. Since 2017 I can't find a comfortable a seating position and this is one of the reasons I regret that we bought this car. I feel like this car made for short people I'm 5.9 inches I'm kind of have long legs. The problem is the steering wheel doesn't come out enough so either hold it with my fingers or recline the back of the seat towards the steering wheel and then i get pain in my back. To me it is not comfortable at all and I'm regret it

There is something to be said about how Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are thoroughly expanding their manufacturing facilities in America and employing American workers. It's gotten to the point where many Acura models like the RDX and MDX are solely made by Americans and sold throughout North America.
It's a tragedy that the Nissan Rogue and Mitsubishi Outlander can hardly be held in similar conversation with the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CRV, but it's nice to see the Subaru Forester step up to the plate. One thing that intrigues me, is that ever since 2006, most Honda and Acura SUV models seem markedly more family friendly, comfortable, sporty, and spacious compared to their Lexus Toyota rivals: case in point the Honda Pilot has a supremely comfortable third and second row as opposed to the more tight Toyota Highlander.
To Ms. Muzio's point about space to breast feeding in the second row being limited to only one child, multiple children would be a struggle in anything short of a three row Minivan with the second row's middle seat taken away. That way you can have both children sitting in the second row while the whole third row is the mother's personal zen space.
