Missed H3, which is the most scenic highway through mountains. A marvel of engineering, as it is build like a very long stretch of bridge with the road barely ever touching real ground. There is a long tunnel through a mountain in the middle.
We are going to Hawaii by cruise. So we have 8hr on the island, should we rent a car or ride on bus to travel around? Which way is more economical? Thank you!
Rent a car! The bus will take forever with the traffic these days and that doesn't even include getting off. Rent a car to go around the island or to go to Kailua. The bus is fine for Waikiki, Diamond Head & downtown.
I would say 2 days if you plan to use transportation for tours & activities for the most part. You could split it up into 2 days: 1 day could be to explore the north shore (Dole, Haleiwa, Sunset Beach area-take H1 west to H2 north, drive through the north shore & then drive down the eastern side past Kualoa Ranch & come back via the Pali or H3). The 2nd day could be to do the east side (Hanauma Bay, Halona Blowhole, Sandy's, Waimanalo, Kailua/Lanikai-drive H1 east to see Hanauma, Sandy's, then take the Pali to Kailua, see that side & come back via the Pali). I hope that made sense. Let me know if it didn't.
Thank you so much for the info. How long will it take on day 1 and day2 ? How about going to Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head? Can we just take a bus? We are staying at a hotel by Waikiki.
You can take a bus to Pearl Harbor and to Diamond Head although I'd rather take a bus to Diamond Head over Pearl Harbor. Diamond Head is way closer to Waikiki and probably won't take more than 15-30 minutes depending on where you are in Waikiki. If there's 4 of you or so splitting a cab could cost about the same and would take less time. PH could take about 1 hour one way although if you go on a Wednesday for example you could walk over to the swap meet at the Aloha Stadium. I don't remember the exact hours and days off the top of my head. As far as driving on days 1 and 2 I'd say that it'll take all day. If you were to drive each loop without stopping it would probably take about 1.5 hours (without traffic) but you'll plan to stop, eat and check things out. For the north shore get an early start as in being on the road by 7-8 am if you can because the traffic just getting INTO the north shore can be insane during the summer and parking at places like Waimea Bay is gone by mid-morning at the latest. Here's the hours for the swap meet: www.alohastadiumswapmeet.net/content/home.aspx. Also the Waikiki Trolley has a trolley that goes to PH now. You may or may not find that it's worth it. Hi there, I'm actually travelling with my wife and 3 kids. We are arriving at night time so I'm not sure if we should pick up a rental car at the airport or just take a shuttle to our hotel then just rent a car a few days later. Also, do you have a suggested itinerary for 8 days?
Hi! If you don't think that you'll need a car until a few days later I'd wait. Parking in Waikiki is outrageous and almost all are valet. Some places are as high as $45 or more a night but the average is probably around $25 +/- a little. 8 days is really 6 days because your 1st and last days are travel days. Since you get in at night you'll probably get more mileage out of your 1st day and also because your body will be used to a different time zone. What do you want to do and what are the ages of the kids? I can make better suggestions based on that. Also, when are you going to Pearl Harbor? I heard bad news today that the actual Arizona Memorial is going to be closed down because it's got structural damage. They don't know what it is, why or how long it will take to fix it. The visitors center is open but no one can take the boat ride out to the actual memorial itself. Here's an article link: www.hawaiimagazine.com/content/uss-arizona-memorial-closed-indefinitely
Waimanalo beaches, just be alert, observant; there are Portuguese Man-of-war stinging jellyfish there. I had to be rescued, saved, from fatal drowning there by my brother, who was at the right moment at the right place to notice I had "frozen" and something didn't look right. Both of us Island born expert swimmers and watermen, and still I was a near drowning fatality. I had unknowingly swam into the tentacles of two drifting Man-of-war floating alongside each other. The tentacles actually move, and will quickly wrap around 360° whatever the long stringy tentacles come into contact with. Even if the Man-of-war are washed up on the sand, the stinging cells on the tentacles (if you step on a tentacle or try to touch it) will strike you with electrifying pain which does not abate. The body of the things look like upside-down Chinese pot stickers (Japanese 'gyoza').
Thanks for the great info. We are going there in April, my first time.
Thank you so much! April is a good time to go before the summer rush. I hope that you guys have a great time.

This video very good suggestions!
We are going there this summer for 10 days. How many days should we rent a car?

Going to Oahu in May!
We did you download that Oahu map?

Oh my goodness! I'm glad you're ok. I was lucky that that never happened to me but I've heard stories like yours.
I would skip Makaha Beach in the leeward side of Oahu. The locals are very unfriendly towards tourists. Not worth it.
