Thank you for good tutorials with good tips. I like that you do not chat away with lots of fuss, as many others do, and that you go straight to the point of what you will teach us. I will eventually make a lone star, have been dreaming about it for a couple of years. So now I have more tools in my brain!
Nancy, I so appreciate your teaching techniques. You explain every detail in each step that you take, leaving no need for questions. When I use your techniques I know that my project will be made accurately, efficiently and most of all, satisfactory. Please continue to provide us amateurs with your love for quilting techniques.
Can’t wait to make a loan star using your technique‘s. I’ve made one taking and sewing individual diamonds and it was quite a process. It came out nice but was very labor-intensive. Using your techniques it should be a breeze. Can’t wait to see your other videos. I have learned so much from you Thanks Nancy.
Wow! This was the MOST informative LONE STAR tutorial I’ve watched…so many great tips, and so much useful info. I LOVE how you teach, demonstrate, and tell your reasons for doing things a certain way. I’m SO glad your videos are so well filmed and easy to follow. I’m going to try my hand at this beautiful pattern. THANK YOU. ❤️
I’ve been quilting for four years. I’ve been wanting to tackle the lone star! I’ve watched many different videos including a Craftsy class and I wasn’t confident that I had a good handle on it until I saw your video series here. Thank you so much for sharing all the wonderful advice!!!!💗
Holy cow I must be a procrastinator! I’m just now getting to making the lone star! I’m rewatching your series again as I have several times prior to now. I truly wish I could like the videos each time I watch them but at least the amount of views counts toward their popularity. Thanks again Nancy for you kind assistance.
Welcome back! I discovered TH-cam as a quilting "tool" only in the last few months and I enjoy many of the channels I have found but OnPoint is the Best in Show, and not by a small margin, either. I've watched both seasons 1 an 2 and am eagerly looking forward to season 3. I think it's the blend of tours, tips, and tutorials that really stand out but I also greatly enjoy Nancy's style of presentation. I'm curious about how the season is starting, though. It leaps right into the construction without any discussion of the overall project. I know I'm missing something and wish I knew where to find it. (Please, please, please don't say Facebook.) Lastly, this Lone Star is a sentimental favorite of mine not only because I'm a Texas transplant but also because it was my very first quilt project. I'd like to make another one and this season may be the impetus I need to get started on it.
Hi Ruth :) - thank you so much!! this Lone Star series started with episode 301.1 - you somehow jumped up to 301.3 :) here's the link th-cam.com/video/-Sg4ku75H-s/w-d-xo.html
I finally had a chance to watch this video. You make it look easy, Nancy. However, I’m thinking I must have missed a previous video where you introduced this series where you discussed the fabric choices etc. I have looked for it, but am unable to find anything. Can you help me out?
I love your methodical approach to cutting, laying out and pressing! I was wondering if you've tried the pressing sticks. I find the long one very helpful when pressing open long strips. I so enjoy your tutorials and I love the lone star! Thanks!
The majority of the supplies I sell can be found on www.firesidequilts.com as for the ironing board I had a friend built mine and it’s approximately 22 x 60” long. Hope that helps.😉
I saw a gentleman from Jordan Fabrics use a dumbbell to hold his rotary cutting ruler while he made his cuts. I think that would be a great idea for those longer cuts!
I saw that too and I use it all the time! It really helps. I use the dumbell with the vinyl coating so it stays in place. Make sure it also has flat spots on the ends so it stays put.
You are an amazing teacher. Seldom have I seen someone breakdown the process as well as you do. Have you or could you show a double wedding ring quilt. I can't wait to finish some projects so I can give this a try.
You are an amazing sewist? Sewer? Not sure the word to use but you get the idea. I've heard you say those words-'You get the idea'. I've learned so much from you. With Christmas coming there's too much to do and it's keeping me away from my new Pfaff 5.2. Your love of your machine guided me toward my choice. I only piece my quilt tops so far. I hope to be getting into quilting soon. So far it is quite challenging. Thanks for those instructive videos too. I might be a groupy of yours. Your hints how to get this star together are helpful. Just noticed that when you folded down the corner before sewing the double strip sets together, that you were now folding on a narrower strip, since you had sewn the 1/4" seam. Will that throw things off or isn't it that exact?
Hi Nancy - i know you will love your Pfaff - i got my first one over 30 years ago and have never been disappointed. don't worry about the narrower strip - it all works out - keep watching :)
I'm pretty new to making quilts and have watched several lone star tutorials in preparation to make my first one. The others I've watched stress starching your fabric to help avoid it stretching. You didn't so I was wondering if it's really necessary?
So many good suggestions. Can you tell me how you get your "scant quarter". I am sure my piecing would be better if I could be sure of my seam allowance. I really enjoy all the On Point videos. I have been quilting for 40 years or so, but always find Ilearn something new every video. Thanks.
Hi Alberta - check our Episode 103 from our first year - that is where i show the scant 1/4" - i will make a point to show the technique again next chance i get - th-cam.com/video/EMQns83KhTo/w-d-xo.html
I am following your videos for my first lone star. It is all very clear, however I cannot figure out how to calculate the final dimensions of the quilt. I want to purchase backing fabric but I need some dimensions to do that. Thank you for a great video series.
Hello Marilyn, the truth is, when I am making a quilt, I just start cutting and what it ends up it ends up :) - but I understand that you could need finished sizes - so, I found this on line - it is from Jan Krentz. She has a wonderful book titles "Lone Stars and Behond", you might want to check it out. Here is her free PDFwww.jankrentz.com/download/lone_star_calculations.pdf
That can be either diamond on the end of the large constructed diamond if you mean the very center of the design. If you mean the full ring in the middle it is color with the most diamonds :)
Thank you for this tutorial. I’ve not tried a Lone Star quilt before, and I have a question - near the beginning of video #2, you do the math for how much fabric will be needed for each fabric choice. Is that amount what is needed for all 8 stars, or one star? Do I need to multiply the amounts to have enough fabric? Apologies in advance for a probably dumb question.
Please disregard my previous measurments since I wasn't doing it correctly. My pattern going across both ways is 15 inches and for the most part the diamonds measure lenghth points at 6 inches and cross points at 4 inches. I feel that my seams are 1/4" in putting everything together but I can't get the 8 diamonds to fit into an 8 point star. I would appreciate some help since I really don't want to start all over or throw this out.
Hi Faye, Nancy here - let me try to understand where your at :) - when you say the diamonds measure 15" across, are you measuring "flat edge to flat edge" or point to point? i hope that makes since? i'm not sure but is there a why to send me a photo? we are recording on tuesday, i'm thinking maybe we do an Ask Nancy segment and maybe i talk about measuring from edge to edge or point to point =- that might help this conversation :).
Hi Josephine, i will write a pattern but it won't come until the end. i like the idea though of having them available at the beginning - let me see if we can do that with our next series :)

Your a great teacher I thank you! 😊
Getting ready to start my 1st lone star. Your video is key!
You got this!
Wish you’d done 5 X 5 so you could have included some blue.
Sounds interesting - you make it 😀

Hi Cindy, i have not but i know others that have and also seem to like them alot.
By far the best tutorial. Please link your supplies. I cannot find the ironing board or one like it.

Why are you not removing the selvedge ends?
I do😀 but there is no need to remove it before you cut you strips, they will be cut off as you cut strips and segments.
If I'm not using repeat colors, which on that chart is the center color?
That can be either diamond on the end of the large constructed diamond if you mean the very center of the design. If you mean the full ring in the middle it is color with the most diamonds :)

What about using starch? I LOVE starch 😁
