Lone Star Quilt #1 - Choosing Your Design

  • Join Nancy Roelfsema in this first tutorial to create a Lone Star Quilt. Nancy begins by sharing examples of Lone Star quilts. She then walks through the planning phase of making a Lone Star: choosing the colors, the size and the pattern. The size of the diamond used to make a section of the Lone Star can determine how many colors of fabric are used. Chart the diamond design on a piece of paper. Use one selection of fabric for each row or repeat fabric choices. Play with fabric options until the pattern looks perfect.

    One of my first quilts was a Lone Star. I did the 6 x 6 with 11 colors and it was a bit tough choosing 11 coordinating colors. I chose paisley fabrics with coordinating solids for 2 of the fabrics. It was a fun quilt to make. I think the biggest challenge was matching the seams. This was 5 years ago and the quilt currently hangs in my mother's bedroom. She's a paisley fan and it was a Christmas gift. I did a border of prairie points, too. I like your methodology and presentation. Thanks!

    Thank you so much for explaining how to figure size of the diamond blocks. I fell in love with the quilt behind you. Everyone I know either has a queen bed or a twin. And I sew but have only made 2 quilts. You are an excellent teacher.

    Thank you for sharing. I learned alot. I'm not afraid to try this now. I designed a Lone Star pattern many years ago and have been terrified to try it, even though I have a book of How To. Hearing it verbally and actually seeing what you did to create the fabric design within the star, made all the difference. Blessings, L :)

    I made my brother the long star quilt and I quilted it using my walking foot on my sewing machine I had to watch a lot of video over to get the layout but I had my fabric picked out and did a repeat to make it all most a king size cause that’s what he wanted I used the galaxy print fabric with the different planets 🪐 on them it turned out great .love the colors in your quilt and. It was my first one but not my last

    I have wanted to make a Lone Star Texas Quilt since I first learned to quilt. Would like to make it large enough for our queen size bed as a coverlet. I have sewn some for many years but not a very experienced quilter in my "twilight years".
    Made this full size for my husband making it up as I went. However quilting it on my featherweight Singer with a small throat resulted in carpel tunnel to right hand pushing and pulling that thing through the little throat. Used many of the decorative stitches. However no one gets to look at the back or very closely at the top stitching. 😊. . I did put lots of love in it however.
    But that experience has made me hesitant to tackle the beautiful Lone Star. 🤔 Any tips or advice from you and your talented viewers? (Lessons are out due to health and mobility. )Thankful for these tutorials ❣️
    Wasn't able to download the Quilt of Honor. 😢

    Just thought of a question.... Out of curiosity, what is the smallest number of rows of diamonds you've seen a person use to make a Lone Star and it still look beautiful? And what was the width of the diamond? Thank you.

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi L - i honestly am not sure, but i would think that any less than a 3x3, would be too small and i personally don't think the diamond should be bigger than 3" unless you are making a dramatic statement with the fabric. I am working on one is some really cool fabrics from Africa and for that i am cutting them 5" - can't wait to pull it out again and show you some progress.

      Thanks for replying. I met a lady 6 yrs? ago at Charlotte NC quilt guild show. She had gorgeous Africa fabrics!!! At the time, I couldn't afford to buy any, but had planned to meet up later; then work changed, retired early and ended up in PA before AQS did the show in Charlotte, there next yr. Was always sorry I missed their show and opportunity to get her fabrics.. I'll bet it was the same lady. She was the only one there with those fabrics. I would love to see the outcome of your quilt in those fabrics. The reason I asked abt diamond size was, I may try to hand stitch a miniature just for fun one day. I have a method to my madness but don't want share the idea yet, so sorry. Have mobility issues so it slows down the unpacking and sewing; but when I make my creation, I'll send u a pic. Wud be nice to meet u one day. Are u at any shows this year? Hoping to get to the HIQShow this yr. Daughter and grdson are there. I lived in Houston over 40 yrs. It's my fav show. Have a blessed Easter and Thanks for sharing! L :)

    Do you think a lone star could be made of old silk ties, and if so how would you cut them since they are irregular?

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gail - actually you can but it wouldn't be a bed quilt or something you would want to wash. I've seen done where you disassemble the ties, wash them by hand then stabilize them with a woven fusible so that they will hold a shape when you are cutting and piecing. I don't know that you could get strips enough to piece the way i show in the video so you might have to cut individual diamonds. Can wait to see what you make!
      Happy Quilting - Nancy

    How would you go about making your lone star "ön point”, with points of stars north-south, east-west instead of two star points going up-down and left-right.

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi K, If you set your star "normal" you could then put large setting triangles on all four sides and that would turn it on-point - right? Let me know how it works. Nancy

      Hi Janice,
      I'm sorry but I am not sure what your question is?
      I do not have a lonestar pattern. I would recommend the book by Jan Krentz - "Lonestars and Beyond" - it has really good instructions and designs.
