      I'm a 53 yr old straight, married male who has always loved metal, though in the past decade or so, have leaned far into the classical and jazz world.
      Recently (about a year ago) I discovered Blackpink, which led to more K-pop, which somehow led me to Babymetal.
      I have to admit, there are a couple dozen K-pop girl group songs that I love so much they actually cause my eyes to mist up, they3just so overwhelmingly amazing.
      Babymetal is doing this to me as well.
      Maybe it's my age, maybe just an expanded appreciation of music, but either way, this never happened to me before 2019, nor has any other genre hit me so hard.

    Very interesting analysis and tips. Babymetal are very consistent with the quality of their performance and singing, especially their lead singer Su-metal. The whole concept and what they do was built and developed around her voice and her stage presence. I think you would find the variety in what they do (all sorts of genres being mixed in with the metal as well as the different metal genres) interesting - and above all hugely entertaining.
    It would be interesting to hear what you would make of a ballad Su-metal sings as a solo - 'No Rain, No Rainbow' live at Legend S (her 20th birthday celebration shows in her home town of Hiroshima). The video is on Babymetal's official channel.

    Best Babymetal is live Babymetal, their performances are kind of like magic. And one thing for certain, they put a smile on every ones face (after their mind has processed what Babymetal is and they've accepted what Babymetal is).
    It always looks like the stage is their playground (especially when they are younger :-) ). I've seen many people say: they were born for the stage. They are so comfortable and they've performed big shows from an early age.
    Many would say Suzuka/Su-metal has a 'loud singing style', would you agree with that ? I've heard comments from professionals in the field that her voice 'reaches far' (even with all the loud music). This is probably not a song that showcases her abilities as much.
    Honestly, only singing that I do is at a Babymetal live concert, stupidly yelling the Japanese words I would otherwise never speak. Even surprising myself I knew all the words ! :-)

    • @StarryStarryNocturne
      @StarryStarryNocturne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Su is just keeping her own promise to herself when her parents kept shushing her singing around the house, "one day I'm going to sing as loud as I want." ;) I was surprised too when this performance was the one selected by whoever it was that suggested it, especially to show to a singing voice instructor. My choice for a singing voice instructor would've been, "Ijime, Dame, Zettai live at Sonisphere." Su's vibrato isn't showcased in it as much, but her pitch precision and projecting power is. She hits and sustains some precise and warm/full high notes in that performance.

    • @StarryStarryNocturne
      @StarryStarryNocturne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      And one of my unsung favorites is Su's performance of KARATE at the Regency in San Francisco. You had to see it live to believe it. On TH-cam, it' unfortunately a fancam recording, rather than a professional one, but you can still make out her brilliant, beautiful voice. And it's not a perfect performance either, as Su was ostensibly tired at this point of the set - it as during that 2016 arduous World touring schedule - and if I recall, there was a voice crack or two along the way, a small one during her acapella section of the song that leads to her call-and-response with the crowd, but during the final return of the chorus, she just wills her voice back to form and that final melodious high note that closes KARATE, the way she delivered it here, is one of the most, if not the most bright, crisp and beautiful deliveries I've ever heard from Su when singing that song.
      It's like she used that final voice crack as motivation to come back stronger at the end and give KARATE's climax the best and most moving vocal delivery she's ever given that song and that's saying something. You could hear it and feel it coming, there were even people in the balcony area hovering over the stage standing up from their seats after Su hit the first, "Hashire!" You know the part that's just a small tease of the tremendous high note that closes the song? And when she hit, she hit, held it, owned it and reigned it in to the crowd's ecstatic reaction. It was incredible. :) And Su's look towards the crowd afterwards at the end, when she moved the mic away from her lips was like a flipping of the bird directed at her own exhaustion, lol, it was priceless. Back then she was only 18 then and you thought to yourself, my god, so much fire, so much passion and determination for such a young lady. You can see how she went from where she was as a little girl, with the rawest, pitchy tools she had in the beginning and took those tools, refined them and used them to hone her craft to be where she is today and has been as a singer and performer since 2012. :)

      @@StarryStarryNocturne My guess is: Road of Resistance was suggested by some because they really like it. A bunch of people aren't suggesting with the reactor in mind, just suggesting what they like. A lot of the times this overlaps, sometimes it doesn't. @@StarryStarryNocturne I watched some videos from that show, you are right during Karate she struggled but for the second half she recovered. This girl really has so much hearth ! Ohh and longs, lots of longs she even did the jumping and everything ! :-)
      It seems to me she recovered during the the audience participation. I don't know if that is a breather moment for her or because the audience participation gave her energy. But that's what it looks like to me.

    Great video! Thanks for posting this. :)
    On the subject of mistakes, as very on point as BabyMetal generally is, there are some compilations out there of live performance bloopers. For me, the result is humanizing, and just makes them all the more endearing. They even take their scrapes and keep going. For instance, infamously, during the Red Night (of a two-night performance at Budokan) concert, Moa took a hard (and clearly painful) spill on the stage while running, and Yui actually fell off of one of the catwalk platforms surrounding the stage. Both of them managed to continue the performance and complete the show. It's really no wonder that artists they've toured with have remarked about how determined and professional they found the girls to be as performers (as well as how friendly and polite they are as people).

    • @Soufriere84
      @Soufriere84 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't forget at the very end of Budokan Black Night how Su nearly faceplanted after tripping on the middle of the stage. She saved herself with a little bunny-hop. Also, at Tokyo Dome how they were snuck onto and off the stage in packing crates and Su's reaction was something along the lines of "That was fun!". AND how just a few weeks ago Su and Moa played with F. Hero's adorable little daughter backstage. Those bits of humanization of our Queen and Grand Duchess are what we as fans live for.

    Nice reaction, and a warning. In a lot of babymetal videos the girls looks very young. They start with only 10/11 years (and still on stages) and sometimes is easy to fall in some "complaisance" thinking "they are only kids". Don´t do it
    The singer Suzuka have more than a decade of experience on stage. She starts to sing professionally at a very early age and have a lot of experience on the stage, on TV studio and even in theaters. They were very young at this moment but in their line of works they must have the same level of professionalism as any adult.
    Also remember that there´s only a few songs where her voice really "shines". For example "Akatsuki" or "No Rain no Rainbow"
    Ah, Suzuka have also an unusual high voice, the whole concept of Babymetal borns where a producer hear her high voice and thinks "maybe this voice can go well with metal". Before this, Suzuka have "no idea" of was metal music

    • @autohmae

    Great review!
    I am glad you enjoyed them.
    I just found you and subbed due to you reviewing BABYMETAL and I am glad I did.
    I will tell you why.
    I am a 54 year old multi-instrumentalist who has played metal in bands since I was 15, back then I played bass and was lead vocalist of the band I was in.
    On top of singing, I write, arrange, produce, engineer and do concept art for my projects. I am just pretty deep into it and have been doing it a long time and in a way I spend a lot of time analyzing what makes an act work.
    As with anything one might do everyday or very often, the last few years I had started to lose a bit of the fire for music and was hardly even listening to music at all, much less producing anything,
    but then I found BABYMETAL.
    As a creator and performer I am always looking for inspiration, new devices and techniques to incorporate into my tool-kit, and that awareness of device is what has made BABYMETAL my favorite band over the last year and a half since the time i was introduced to them.
    They have made my old jaded ass love music again!
    The depth of concept behind this band far exceeds almost every other band of the last 20 years.
    Great Songwriting, great performers and musicians, costumes, production, choreography, staging, lighting, props, pyro, mythos, an intriguing backstory, pure stagecraft and audience participation.
    The girls also have those intangible elements of personnel gravity and stage presence, and simply put, they were born to be stars.
    What they have created is unique and it is, in many ways, truly art.
    Their live performances are where they shine, all you got to do is get past that "WTF" moment when you first experience them, (which you have already accomplished!), then the further down the foxhole you go the more you just have to go, "wow."
    Others have already suggested "NO RAIN, NO RAINBOW, Legend S Baptism XX" th-cam.com/video/pDgqo6fcliY/w-d-xo.html
    I suggest "HEADBANGER" live at Makuhari Messe for some of that very stagecraft and audience participation!.
    th-cam.com/video/P9miB6jKLRw/w-d-xo.html
    ~Kitsune up and Thanks again for liking my favorite band!

      I saw your old long comment and no replies, just wanted to say awesome comment/story. :-)
      My believe is audience participation from the beginning was all because of Koba. In the past at smaller venues he would also place a camera near the soundboard, my guess is to (also) film the audience. These days I believe Moa(metal) and especially Suzuka/Su-metal has been trained enough to recognize it on their own.
      You might enjoy some parts of translated interviews to give you insight on the topic, this part is from on Reddit: Kobametal Interview : Hedoban magazine (vol.1) - Chapter 3 of 7
      Q : In your interview on other magazine, Kobametal-San once went to Lollapalooza to see X JAPAN, right?
      Koba : Yes. I went to see them. I keep having a will to bring Babymetal worldwide from the beginning. And X JAPAN is popular in many countries, right? My interest was why people in these countries got exited with Visual-kei bands and X JAPAN, but I thought I couldn't know the reason until I saw it by my own eyes.
      Q : Does this mean you went that far to Lollapalooza just to see X JAPAN?
      Koba : Just right. I also go to Coachella fest and others every year. I can see a lot of next big ones who must get on the ride soon. I like a festival in my nature. Lollapalooza takes place at a place, like Yoyogi park, in Chicago. And X JAPAN was going to play there... I literally "had no choice but go there to see them!" (laugh) It was so mysterious that X JAPAN played on the same stage with Green Day and Lady Gaga, not as a solo! It seemed so interesting. I went there wondering how audience reacted to them. And their appearance was dead of the noon! They appeared at the biggest stage, equivalent to Marine Stage at Summer Sonic. I was at the far behind at first, but crawled to the second row at last (laugh).
      Q : The second row! (laugh)
      Koba : I just wondered "How about it?" at the first few steps, but I noticed the audience... were some Japanese, but a lot of Americans and Europians... with cosplays of X JAPAN. I had a talk with these fans, one of them with Hide mascot. I moved back and forth in the field during their performance to see reactions. And the last song was "X" I remembered, I saw a hippie man with dreadlocks at my very next... Lollapalooza doesn't usually feature Metal (laugh). That year at the fest, Soundgarden did their revival act as "at the boarder line between Metal and others." But Soundgarden never does that Metal with endless twin bass drumming (like X JAPAN). Anyway I suppose these endless twin bass drumming sounded something new to the hippie man! Even he did the X Jump at last (laugh). The same as choreography in "IINE", core fans at the front rows jumped first.
      Q : Then the jump infected to the behind (laugh).
      Koba : Yes. Everyone started enjoying and got on a ride. As seeing that I just knew "X JAPAN does transcend any language barrier!" Also I thought X JAPAN was great as one of icon-of-icons of Japanese culture. More to say, I also got some confidence of "This is... maybe Metal can go to somewhere?"
      Q : I hope someday we can see mega bending-down of 40-50 thousands audience at the breakdown in IINE (laugh).
      Koba : More to say, all those never get any idea of the choreography (laugh). (Pp. 47-48)
      from an other Reddit translation: *“Babymetaling is a new dance style!”* 4: Interview with BABYMETAL choreographer, Hedoban Magazine, Vol. 1, the beginning part:
      Mikiko: I do. Once my body felt the rhythm, it was easy to choreograph it. The girls of BABYMETAL seemed comfortable learning my choreography too. It’s easy to choreograph BABYMETAL songs lol
      Interviewer: What requests Koba-metal have about choreography?
      Mikiko: OK, I’ll give you an example. For the song “iine,” Koba-metal and I had a study group meeting in which he said to me things like “Here, at this moment of the song, I think the audience would react like this.” Well, I said “study group,” but it’s more like… I would ask him, “What shall we do at this moment of the song,” and he would be like, “The music is about to reach a climax and the audience would react like this!” and he might jump from a bending posture, for example. I listen to him because I don’t know anything about metal lol
      Interviewer: As a choreographer, generally, do you regularly have such discussions?
      Mikiko: No, it’s the first time I make choreography in this manner. Choreographing BABYMETAL songs is easy thanks to Koba-metal. His intention is always clear haha There is a clear distinction between the parts of a song in which he has his own ideas of what he wants me to do and the parts where he completely entrusts me.
      Interviewer: Are his requests detailed?
      Mikiko: No, they are quite vague lol
      He says things like, “Here, at this moment of the song, everyone would want to do something together, methinks...” After I come up with dance moves, he would say, “Doesn’t it look good! Doesn’t it look good!”
      He is interested in what the audience would be doing at each moment of a song, first and foremost. What he gives me are not really instructions of choreography, but his understanding of what the audience would be doing.
      Interviewer: What the audience would be doing?
      Mikiko: Absolutely lol
      You know, there is a set of typical audience reactions we often see at heavy-metal shows. He wants the girls on the stage to energize their audience to do those reactions… how to make the audience want to react more haha
      Interviewer: Sounds like part of your choreography is specifically made to energize the audience?
      Mikiko: Well, his instructions are all about how to make the audience want to react lol
      Then, during a show, I’m like, “Wow! Look at the audience, their bodies are making a set of moves just as he described!” I’m like, “Koba-metal is amazing!” lol
      True respect for him lol

    the part when you say they stay in character.. you've got to watch some of their other performances. they are so professional and stay consistent in character. There are some funny ones, but you'll see how they approached it in such a way creative and seems like part of the act.
    -Moa got injured
    -Su twisted her ankle
    -Microphone rolled off the floor and Moa reached it out convincingly
    -mask flew right on her face and got rid of it in one sweep
    -yui fell of the stage
    -wardrobe malfunction on yui
    -moa missed the queue on their first step on their first ever international concert, on their first song
    -willingly throw off their bodies on a wet stage
    i can only name a few.. but their are tons! they did it adorably.. hehe!

    Interesting comment about not competing with the music volume. So many pub (bar) bands could learn that one. Moa, Su and Yui have been performing since before their teen years and together as BabyMetal since their early teens. Your comment about keeping the performance going they have demonstrated. On one occasion, Su's microphone went rolling across the floor but it was picked up and dealt with without any awkwardness or pausing in the routine. Another example is when Yui, fell badly during the song, she couldn't continue but Moa and Su carried out performing as if nothing had happened.
    You really have picked with BabyMetal a true professional act. The girls perform with a maturity and experience way above their age. Yui has left the group and obviously, they have all grown up and are no longer teenagers. Moa and Su are performing as BabyMetal this year and will be with the same band as you see here. The Kami Band as they are known have made BabyMetal live performances legendary.
    The one think that you must be aware of is that any live performance you see on a DVD/Bluray, is that the vocal and music receives post production. This is normal but can, especially with the vocal, give a strength and clarity that is not there at the actual concert. Su's voice is very good and when the man behind BabyMetal first introduced the Kami Band to the girls, his instructions were not to hold back with their playing style because they were young girls. Both the Kami Band and Moa, Su and Yui have proved time and time again with their live performances the professionalism that so many bands just can't seem to match.

      i see you comment in many babymetal video and feel confusion many times. you praise babymetal, but say Su voice is not strong and clear without production assistance? and i think i see you say babymetal is mainly product, but good product to you in bsh reactor video, it is confusing. i am sorry i don't understand... ?_?

    • @Glynthepin
      @Glynthepin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@meggitsune1806 I hope this helps: You seem confused by the word product. BabyMetal was not formed by Moa, Su and Yui getting together and deciding to form a band. They did not rehearse together and practice singing and dancing and then send out demo tapes of their work to music producers. Koba Metal, BabyMetals Manager, spotted Su singing and from my understanding had the idea of forming a band using Su as lead and two backing singers and dancers. So he produced BabyMetal, making them a product. I have never said that was a bad thing. As for Su singing, I have said on many reaction videos that the crystal clear powerful voice that people comment on after watching the live DVD's, is not Su's true voice. It has been post produced and tweaked to get the quality that we hear. This is not unique to BabyMetal. Most live DVD's have to be post produced to get the vocal and instruments all audible and balanced. I have always said that Su's voice is still very good when she sings live. Both of these points you raise, I emphasise to try and help and inform the person making the reaction video.

    • @meggitsune1806
      @meggitsune1806 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i am sorry i was not clear. i am not native english speaker... it is not the word it is you praise babymetal on one side and on another side also give them disregard in all your postings i see? i understand what you say but i don't understand why, maybe? i see many babymetal shows recorded on phones to see overseas reactions and Suzuka's voice is always very powerful and clear still... yes, dvds audio production is different but i do not understand why it is an important thing to make special notice, is like you say it is not something unique to babymetal. and this reactor is a professional also. yes, koba produce babymetal, but it is project of passion for koba, he think very different from other idol producers and use much personal feeling and babymetal perform with passion and personal feeling too... maybe it is difference of culture? to see artists we love very much like products, it is a strange estimation to see come from fans for me..

    • @Glynthepin
      @Glynthepin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@meggitsune1806 Not to worry. As a non native English speaker you have done well to express your thoughts coherently. most people who make reaction videos are not professional. The reason I make my point is to help with their view on Su's singing. To repeat, I never say it is bad and I know you understand this but the people making the reaction video are mislaid by the post production, even some of the professional ones making reaction videos. I do not just say this with BabyMetal. I also say the same thing with Band Maid.

      Better yet, from 2010 to 2019, since "Doki-Doki Morning" was originally recorded October 29th 2010. Su wasn't yet 13. The MV for that song was filmed almost a year later. Or even better yet, dig up Su's ASH solos from when she was 10. Even before her voice broke, she has been a powerhouse onstage. It helps to understand _why_ she is the Queen.

That's what I really like.

    Not many people can "get" Babymetal on first sight, I'm happy that you did. There's a lot more to learn from Babymetal. Their best singing performance can be found in "Akatsuki", "Amore", "No Rain No Rainbow", these songs are solo vocals. Their stage directing is best in their closed stage 1-2 hours show, for example "Tokyo Dome", "Wembley Arena", "Budokan", "Fox Festival", "Hiroshima", etc. Some songs, like this Road of Resistance, are performed very differently in closed stage. You can learn a lot more after comparing those shows. See some of them in BABYMETAL official TH-cam channel. Thanks again for acknowledging BABYMETAL. We are the ONE, BABYMETAL Family.
