    > "almost like a DragonForce-feel to it"
Well... Herman Li and Sam Totman from DragonForce co-wrote this song and even played guitar-parts for the studio recording. So it no wonder you had this feel. :)
    > "tight band"
Their musicians are called Kami-Band (Band of Gods). All of them top-notch session musicians.
    > "How old are these girls?"
When the show this footage is from was recorded in 2015, they were 17 (lead singer) and 15 (backup singers / dancers). Right now, they are 22/21.
    > "What are they saying?"
The lead singer shouts "We are..." and then the backup-singers in unison with the crowd answering "BABYMETAL!".
Since they are obviously new to you, let me provide some basic facts about them: BABYMETAL is around since 2010 when the three girls were 11 and 12 years old. They originally were part of the school-themed idol-project Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom Academy) but parted from SG in 2013 to become an independent act. Back then the band mainly consisted of three girls: Suzuka Nakamoto (aka. SU-METAL, lead vocals) Yui Mizuno (aka. YUIMETAL, backing vocals and dance) and Moa Kikuchi (aka. MOAMETAL, backing vocals and dance) complemented by a bunch of stellar musicians called Kami-Band (Band of Gods) at their live performances.
They already have five albums out:
    "BABYMETAL", rel. 2014 (studio album)
"Live at Budokan - Red Night Apocalypse", rel. 2014 (live album)
"Metal Resistance", rel. 2016 (studio album)
"Live at Wembley", rel. 2016 (live album)
"Metal Galaxy", rel. 2019 (studio album)
BABYMETAL also has several live recorded shows out on DVD/Blu-Ray which is a good thing because (as you could see for yourself) they are one of the best live bands out there (which earned them many best-live-act-awards). They also never get boring because of their diversity in music styles. Regardless they always manage to stay recognizable. Unfortunately, Mikio Fujioka (their lead guitarist) died from an accident in January 2018 and Yui Mizuno left BABYMETAL in fall 2018 because of health reasons. But despite all that, the band is going strong and achieved, as first Asian act ever, a number one notation at the billboard rock charts with their recently released album "Metal Galaxy".
My recommendations for the start are:
*"Ijime, Dame, Zettai"* live at Sonisphere Festival 2014 in the UK th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html
*"Karate"* live at Download Festival 2016 in the UK th-cam.com/video/qXF94RGYEmw/w-d-xo.html
*"Rondo of Nightmare"* live at Nippon Budokan in 2014 th-cam.com/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/w-d-xo.html
    *"Syncopation"* live video compilation th-cam.com/video/uZ11JUZM8V0/w-d-xo.html
*"Shanti Shanti Shanti"* live at Glastonbury Festival 2019 in the UK th-cam.com/video/w5AlEavdipA/w-d-xo.html

And last but not least let me copy/paste the lyrics real quick:
    *Road of Resistance*
Dying the eastern sky true red,
    the light of signal fire
tells the end of the darkness of solitude.
    It's a new guidepost.
Even if you are crushed, again and again,
    burn your flame of heart!
Now is the time! Is the time!
    This moment right now.
Is the time! Is the time!
    Living together.
Just now is the time! Is the time!
I sing for the you of tomorrow.
    Now the time has come.
Go for Resistance! [Resistance!] Resistance! [Resistance!]
    Wow wow wow wow wow.
    Our hearts are one.
If you believe in your way,
go on even the way without a path!
    Forever! [Forever!] Forever! [Forever!]
    Wow wow wow wow wow.
In the depths of our heart,
the hot Metal spirit is burning.
    It is our Resistance.
    Wow wow wow wow...
    As long as life continues,
I will never turn my back to reality.
    Today makes tomorrow.
Yes, it's our future. On the way, [ah.]
    Resistance! Resistance!
    Stand up and shout! [Shout!]
    Justice forever!
If you believe in your way,
go on! The answer is here.
    Forever! [Forever!] Forever! [Forever!]
    Wow wow wow wow wow.
In the depths of our heart,
the hot Metal spirit is burning.
    Our Resistance.

The Kami Band however, is also extremely extremely talented and can pull off Dragonforce technicality with ease which is what they are doing here.

It is still surprising, even watching this for 3years, that they’d only been a group 4years (4.5 from when they met, 3.5 from their first video?), that they grew to stadiums sooo fast. The fact that they’re completely pro reflects the whole team, and reflects the fact that they’ve each been in the industry 10-14 years, child models & actresses. In fact, Su played places this size in her previous band at age 10

Kami Band, the live band supporting BabyMetal consisted of a rotating line-up of different musicians since its debut in late 2012. As of late 2013, however, the line-up has been relatively stable, consisting of guitarists Takayoshi Ohmura, Leda Cygnus, Fujioka Mikio (RIP), and ISAO, bassist BOH, and drummers Aoyama Hideki and Yuya Maeta with members occasionally substituting for one another if needed. Some Kami Band members like Leda has contributed to Babymetal's music, most notably on their album Metal Resistance (credited as Ledametal).
On December 30, 2017, Kami Band guitarist Mikio Fujioka fell from an observation deck; he died from his injuries on January 5, 2018.
Last year the West Kami Band was formed consist of Chris Kelly (Guitar), Clint Tustin (Bass) Anthony Barone (Drum) & CJ Masciantonio (Guitar) primary taking care for their European & US tour.

I basically became a 59 year old fanboy when I got to see them live in Cardiff back in Feb. I saw Sabbath in the same venue in 1976 but had got very tired of listening to copy bands by 1990 at the latest and fell into EDM for 20 years. Then I discovered Babymetal and Band-Maid and suddenly Metal and Rock were back in my life. My playlist now is basically Babymetal and Band-Maid with a dash of Underworld.

@@tonygriffin_ I think Babymetal has made me love listening to music again. Since the 80's, hip hop, rap, dance (techno, EDM, etc) and R&B/Soul music is what I mainly listened to, but I'd say around 2001/2002 I stopped listening to newer music, then eventually stopped listening to all music. Nothing new is as good as what I use to listen to or liked, but I'm also tired of listening to old songs. Babymetal songs are refreshing and are full of great melodies, energy, and positivity which is what I want and need right now...plus I'm a sucker for guitar solos! I've realized that I really like power metal and shreddy guitar playing.

Hi Matthew! Good reaction! Thanks for checking out my favorite band BABYMETAL! They are a Japanese group that mixes J-pop vocals with metal music, a genre they call "Kawaii Metal" which means "Cute Metal". The name is a play on words in Japanese. Heavy metal is spelled: ヘビーメタル (hebi metaru) but if you just add two marks to the first character you get: ベビーメタル (bebi metaru) or BABYMETAL! It's meant to signify the birth of a new form of metal music. At the end of the song they were yelling "We are! BABYMETAL!"
Good ear with the DragonForce catch, the guitars for this song were arranged by Herman Li and Sam Totman and they even played them on the studio version of the song! I remember reading that Herman said they purposefully made them more difficult than they normally would because they wouldn't have to be the ones playing them live. It came back to bite them in the ass though as they performed the song with BABYMETAL at the Golden Gods Awards in 2015.
BABYMETAL are the three girls but they are backed by the absolute metal masters of the Kami Band. The Kamis represent the gods, or spirits, of their respective instruments. BABYMETAL considers themselves more performing artists than recording artists and are one of the very few bands these days which are much better live! Anyways, if you want to continue down the foxhole with BABYMETAL let me recommend some more videos:
"Ijime, Dame, Zettai" - Live at Sonisphere 2014 UK - th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html - Title translates to "Bullying, No Good, Absolutely". This was the last song of their first big show in the west where they were bumped up to the main stage. The girls were scared the UK metal heads were going to throw bottles and boo them off.
"Rondo of Nightmare" with Mischiefs of the Metal Gods Intro - th-cam.com/video/QxYAcIyk2Co/w-d-xo.html - This is a Su-Metal (lead singer) solo, but it really shows off the Kami Band and Su's voice.
"KARATE" Live at Download UK 2016 - th-cam.com/video/qXF94RGYEmw/w-d-xo.html - This is the song that really got me into the group. I had known about them for about a year but dismissed them as a gimmick, but when I heard this song I was a converted fan. The music video for this song is also really good.

Enjoyed your reaction. As previously mentioned, BABYMETAL will celebrate it's 10th anniversary this fall. Since their inception, they've won over 35 International awards, have been on the covers of industry magazines (REVOLVER, METAL HAMMER, ROLLING STONE JAPAN, KERRANG), & have a passionate, dedicated, & engaged fanbase, a.k.a. "THE ONE".
Their band, the KAMI BAND (KAMI means God, spirit, divine being) are some of the very best musicians in Japan & often dress in traditional Japanese burial robes & corpse paint/makeup.
Unlike most K-Pop, J-pop Idol female groups, BABYMETAL uses no suggestive or sexual imagery, lyrics, or choreography in their music or performances. This is intentional. Their lyrics can be poppy, silly, & fun; however, most are positive, inspirational, & uplifting, & inspire hundreds of thousands of young fans. Also, their work ethic is beyond reproach. And NO ONE can control a crowd like these young ladies. Check out videos from Tokyo Dome in 2016, where they sold out back-to-back dates with 55,000 fans in attendance each night, or 2014 at Sonisphere in the UK, where they were virtually unknown & many attendees were skeptical or thought these barely teenage girls were just a gimmick, the end result was BABYMETAL turned a crowd of over 50,000 metalheads into fans with their performance, & sold more merchandise than any other act at that festival - not bad considering some of the other acts; METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, etc.
BABYMETAL is best experienced LIVE, moreover, it fits into their philosophy, as one band member explained during an interview (and I'm paraphrasing), BABYMETAL's CD's are considered business cards in the hope people would be enticed enough to come see their live shows. 🦊🤘

BabyMetal is their band name. It's a play on Heavy Metal, which in Japanese is written and sounds very similar to BabyMetal. Their genre is Kawaii Metal ("cute" metal), which their manager essentially created. Finally, at the end of the song, they were chanting "We Are!...BabyMetal". They use it to close out all shows. The "See You" you heard at the end of this song was discontinued a couple years ago as the girls matured to women.

At the end of the song Su is yelling (in English) "WE ARE!!" The crowd answers "BABYMETAL!!!" Su then yells "PUT YOUR KITSUNES UP!!!" Kitsune, meaning Fox, is the hand sign you see the girls make throughout the song which looks like a shadow puppet dog. When they yell we are Babymetal they're not just reminding you who they are. It refers to the fact that Babymetal performances really include the crowd as an integral part of the act. So everyone on stage and the crowd together are Babymetal.

10:10 I like it when people point this out. She has great command of the crowd. I saw one comment on a different reaction vid and on another reaction vid the reactors said the same thing, she has great command, especially for a 16 year old.
I listened to the Spotify version all the time and kinda hated that she came in a little off from the crowd but when I watched reactions I realize that wasn't it. She was controlling the crowd to get back into rhythm. Not a lot of reactors pick up on that.

This was the 2nd time they played this song live, (first time was in London) and after this they never let the audience go off on their own again. Always sung along or had a guitar lead with the chant notes. Pretty sure the girls were 16 and 14 years old here.

I'm a little late, but Welcome to Babymetal!!! All the veteran fans have already answered your questions so ill just say a couple things and leave you with a recommendation!
As someone already mentioned, the hand sign they do is not the traditional "devil horns" of rock, but a variation where the pads of the middle & ring finger, and the thumb are pressed together and the pointer and pinkie remain extended. This makes the sing of the fox(kitsune) in Japanese culture shadow play. When the producer showed the girls the "horns", they mistook it. Since the Fox God is a big part of their lore they ran with it lol!
You already have many suggestions, and any are good because all of Babymetal's songs are (at the very least) likable. I honestly don't have one I dislike. My current fav is Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro live at Budokan (venue) Black Night (concert title). Fan favs are Megitsune, Karate, Headbangerrr, and Ijime Dame Zettai (IDZ is an anti-bullying song that translates to Bullying, No, Absolutely, but the Band have called it No more Bullying Forever. ) A more recent fav is Papaya.
Lastly, Babymetal are a live preformance act (they've called themselves so) and truly shine as such. However their MVs are definitely worth a watch since they are brilliantly done and give more insight into the songs. There are a few (especially the newer ones) that are just live footage over studio tracks, but the fan favs I mentioned above have awesome ones, and a couple newer ones are even more theatrical and beautiful!
    Kitsune up! \m/

Towards the end, the chant is "We are" ... "Babymetal". At the very end, it's "See" ... "See you". At one point, Su yells, "Sorta o motarasu" which translates to "bring them on". Basically a challenge to those who had been hating on them. Remember, they are pioneers in many aspects of both music and culture. I see this live show, where they were just 17y and 15y olds, btw, as their declaration of success in spite of any who didn't believe in them. It's their anthem of traveling along the "Road of Resistance".

The band's name is a combination of "baby" (ベビー, bebī) and "heavy metal" (ヘビーメタル, hebī metaru); Heavy metal: ヘビメタ (romaji transcription: hebimetaru) to Babymetal: ベビメタ (romaji transcription: bebimetaru).
    Yeah Japanese like puns.
The band defines its style as a new genre called "kawaii metal" and clarifies that it is "a mix of J-pop idol and heavy metal".
The band was formed in 2010, with the original lineup of Nakamoto Suzuka aka Su Metal (Vocal and Dance) (DOB Dec 20, 1997), Kikuchi Moa aka Moa Metal (Scream and Dance) (DOB July 4, 1999), and Mizuno Yui aka "Yui Metal" (Scream and Dance) (DOB Jun 20, 1999), with the concept of creating a fusion of heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. Originally a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin which also was formed at the same year, Babymetal became an independent act in 2013. The band is produced by Kobayashi Key aka "Kobametal" from the Amuse talent agency. Original concept of the band was to introduced the new generation of audience to metal music especially females.
On October 19, 2018, Babymetal announced that Yui Metal had decided to leave the band due to undisclosed poor health, following her absence from live performances since December 2017.

Answering some of the burning questions:
The Live Kami Band this night were
    Drummer: Hideki Aoyama
    Bassist: B•O•H (6 string bass)
Guitars: Takayoshi Ohmura on the pink glittery guitar, and Leda Cygnus on the black curly guitar. (7 strings each)
They are some of the best session musicians in Japan. There are other session musicians that rotate in if someone can't make a show.
As of 2019, there are 2 different Kami Bands, an East (in white robes)- for the Japan shows, and a West (in black robes) - for the US/UK shows.
Guitar parts written by: Dragon Force (Sam Totman & Herman Li who also played on the album track)
07:51 "Nothing repeats either." As we head into 4 minutes of WOAH-OH-AH-OHs... hee hee hee hee
08:14 "These girls know my weakness." Just you wait... heh heh heh... 09:36 BANG!
    Ages (in JAN 2015): Su-metal - 17, Yuimetal & Moametal - 15
They have been at this for 10 years come October.
At the end, they're yelling, "WE ARE ... BABYMETAL!"
There you are. Hope that helped. Nice job; nicely done.
Now... You are standing at the edge of The Fox Hole. Dare you take that next step? If you do, I recommend "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (2014) at Sonisphere. [ th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html ]

Babymetal are the three girls, with a band they call the Kami Band for support. tzhe musicians are all guys. Su, the lead singer, was 17 here. Yui and Moa were 15. This was shot in 2015, and the group formed in 2010. Koba, the producer, built the group around Su's talents.
This song was at the end of a concert, 90+ minutes into the show. And they go 100% for the whole show, how they do it I don't know, and how Su maintains breath I don't know.
They have headlined sold-out shows at the LA Forum and Wembley Arena, they are a worldwide heavy hitter in the metal community right now. Not a local Japanese act anymore. You should see them when they come around again, they are an amazing and unique show.

@@Grington300 I salute your devotion to the Fox God and I usually agree with everything you write, but with the greatest respect I'm going to disagree with you here. Country music is a popular form of American folk music, partly derived from Appalachian music, which in turn is descended from English, Scottish and Irish traditional music. So country and folk are closely related and there's plenty of crossover. Secondly, people keep saying Oh! MAJINAI is "pirate metal" but it seems to me it's much more like a fun homage to Finnish folk metal bands like Finntroll and (especially) Korpiklaani. Check out the latter's little masterpiece Beer Beer if you don't know it already. Anyway, that's my tuppenceworth. Carry on spreading the word of Babymetal. All the best.

    • @Grington300
      @Grington300 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ClawCarver That's fair. My thinking was that country, although it is clearly a form of folk music, is so much it's own thing and is now far removed in sound and style from whatever folk roots it may have had (certainly from the English folk I know). I bow to your knowledge of Finnish folk metal and how Oh! Majinai is more akin to that than to pirate metal (I have heard Beer Beer I think, that is the extent of my own familiarity with it).
      Have a good one :-)

    • @ClawCarver
      @ClawCarver 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Grington300 Thanks for the reply. You're right that country music has a distinct sound and style, because it has developed in its own context, but there have been many artists who blur the boundary between country and folk (what we might call Americana): Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Cowboy Junkies, etc. I consider myself a folkie, and mostly listen to English, Scottish, Scandinavian and Finnish folk music (traditional and contemporary) but I dip my toes in Americana sometimes. I don't actually listen to a lot of folk metal (because the folk element is often very simplistic) but I appreciate the fun party spirit of bands like Korpiklaani and I'm sure they're a riot live. I mentioned Beer Beer specifically because you can more or less sing the lyrics of Oh! MAJINAI along with it. Try it some time! All the best.

At the end they are saying "We are" and the audience responds "Babymetal!". It's necessary to note this is not an self indulgent advertisement. The purpose of this chant is to identify that the audience is part of Babymetal. It's not a royal "We", it's an enclusive "We", to let the audience know they are appreciated and without them, there is no "We", as in no Babymetal. They finish almost every show with this. This video was recorded in 2015 so Su (lead singer) would have been 18, Yui and Moa (girls on the side) would have been 16. Their most recent songs/videos, from an album released in 2019, would be Pa Pa Ya!! (Party song sure to drive the audience crazy), Elevator Girl (announcement they are adults), or Shanti Shanti Shanti (really unusual genre mash with near eastern traditional influences that would make George Harrison smile). Knowing your background and your appreciation for audience participation, you would likely also enoy "The One", which is a song dedicated to their fans (they are called "The One") and "No Rain No Rainbow", a ballad. I would recommend the Legend S version of No Rain No Rainbow, recorded at Su's 20th birthday concert.

Wait, you're OHRION and Wyatt's friend right? I think I've seen videos with you. Screw it, I'll sub to you too.
The thing about Babymetal is that you can never go wrong in terms of numbers when reacting to them. We're a very dedicated fanbase, and their live videos are generally better than studio anyway so win-win!
About the song, it has a Dragonforce feel cause Sam Totman and Herman Li co-wrote and played the riffs in the studio version. With Babymetal, I feel like the vocals become another instrument if you don't understand it. You don't feel the language barrier once you get into their music. The girls are Suzuka (17 here, 22 now), Yui and Moa (15 here, 21 now). I'm sure some other amazing fans will fill you in more on the band.
I really hope you check out more Babymetal cause they're, to me, one of the best bands around. I'm more into core, kinda like Ryan and Wyatt, so that's saying something. They've also won awards for best live act and their latest album hit #1 on the Billboard Rock charts in the US, so that could be another incentive. Their 10 year anniversary is this year btw, so they've been around a while.
At the end they said, "We are...Babymetal!" a few times then, "Put your kitsune (fox sign) up!".
My recommendation is gonna be the official video for 'Megitsune'. It's very different from this song, which is the case for almost all their songs anyway. Really enjoyed that reaction, and hope you have a great day!

10:08 I only discovered this band literally this week, and I have seen this video like 10 times already. And each time I wondered why she started to sing again at a different place as the crowd.
Lol, I never even knew that, yes of course, the whole thing is on a timer and she needs to keep on track.
    Thanks for pointing that out.

Not sure if you'll see this since I just found your video and its from a month ago. But I was lucky enough to catch them 2 years ago when they came through Austin. The venue was much smaller but they still put on an amazing show! They really are one of the groups that is better live than in their videos. One of the best live shows I have ever seen.

Thanks for the great reaction! ROR was the first Babymetal song for me, too. It’s so amazing. Three little girls bring out their flags to lay claim to the stage, then Su-Metal proceeds to recruit the entire audience into her army. Wow! That was enough for me. But I have one little question. How the heck does Su-Metal do those energetic dances, then immediately belt out those amazing songs?

I love to watch people's first reactions to baby metal - and you picked a great start. Their stuff previous to this very eclectic, still rock/pop but it bounces around as much as they do :-)

One thing you picked out well is that Babymetal is really more of a production than a band in the traditional sense. Some people mistake that as a bad thing, like it makes them less genuine... but its actually their biggest strength. Its what allows them to put in a show and make music in such an impressive manner that could never happen in any other way. The girls where barely out of middle school when this was filmed but all three had been performing as singers, dancers, models, and actresses in some form since they were like 6-8. So they already had years of legit professional experience by this stage. Plus, their producer went out and hired a bunch of the most talented and respected band members in the entire Japanese metal scene aa basically hired guns to be able to come in and instantly perform at an elite level without any risk or need to train them up. They are essentially a super group with the financial backing of a big label. A lot of westerners turn their nose up to that idea... but the results speak for themselves.

Thank you for reacting to Babymetal, they bring something new to music/metal. Everyone involved is hugely talented. I hope you do more reactions. I would suggest:
Rondo of Nightmare (w/ Gods of Mischief intro),
    11:38 "I'm sure they've done it"
Actually, this was the third performance of this song, first time the UK. Then both in Japan (one was a small fan club only show which they've done in the past for testing new songs).
They never had this type of singing along in an other song.
    :-)
13:05 that was actually not part of the original song, that's her (might have been planned, but that would have been a change they made, this would have been the first time they added that)
    16:50 "a 100 000 people"
Well, this venue was 20 000 actually. :-)
But years ago. They played The Forum in LA in 2019 to promote their 3rd album, so that's: 17 000+ people. Their biggest show in the west. Their second big show in the west after Wembley Arena in 2016.
And I think it's exactly because their music/performance can be enjoyed without knowing the language that it works.
