    So I think the Thenns are sort of a view into how the First Men lives during the age of heroes. They live the farthest North of any people we've seen so far, which sort of indicates that they're the last remnant of how things were before the Andals. In particular, I think the fact that they see their magnar as a god is a nod to the old greenseer kings, whose legacy Bran will reignite.

    • @j-rey-

      The First Men split between the Wildlings beyond the Wall and the people subjected to the Starks between the Twins and the Wall. I will never understand why the subjects of the Staks, UNCONQUERED by the Andals, adopted the Andalic language.

    • @yurinabesima
      @yurinabesima ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@pawezielinski2781 There are many ways a culture can be changed beyond conquest. Marriages, commerce, peacuful miggration etc. The Andal culture has a some characteristics like the use of steel, an organized religion with appointed priests and a alphabet. Those aspects would naturally flow trough the Neck and be adoppted by the North as it they fit better in more organized kingdoms with central leadership and strict rules of inheritance.

    • @unavela
      @unavela ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@pawezielinski2781language does expand by influence, odds are the northerners had a lot more cultural and economical contact with the Andal conquered regions than with the wildings, slowly taking aspects of the southies, including language, tho I agree that they should speak more of a kin language than the same language, something like what English is to french, not of the same linguistic line but they still overlap

    • @DominionSorcerer
      @DominionSorcerer ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@unavela that would be a given, the Andals brought with them a lot of valuable knowledge and after having conquered all of Westeros but the North controlled a massive quantity of resources the North would have needed for trade. Nothing but the Neck separates the North from the Andals in the south, but the Wildlings? They have little knowledge the Northmen don't already know, they have little resources but fur and lumber and there's a massive wall between them.
      Not to mention centuries of generational hatred between the two.

    Adding to the point about House Thenn's loyalties, they're not among the group of free folk who pledge Jon their swords. Given that Alys says she thinks Karhold will open the gates for her, I think that's where she'll be. But if the castle will yield to her without a siege, then she doesn't necessarily need all the Thenn's with her, just a decent sized escort. It's possible Sigorn might lead the remaining men to Stannis, seeing as how he is his overlord now. If that's the case, leaving directly from Castle Black to Winterfell would position him behind Stannis, thereby protecting his rear. But if he traveled to Karhold with Alys even partially, we're looking at a March from the east that could attack, whatever forces the Boltons send from Winterfell's eastern gate.
    I just love speculating over the Winds of Winter.

    Fun fact- Though Alys Karstark is the commonly accepted candidate for the 'grey girl on a dying horse', she's never depicted on page wearing grey. We first see her sleeping in a black blanket given her by the Watch, and Jon doesn't note the color of the damp clothes on the ground next to her. Because of this discrepancy, I've wondered if the 'grey girl' is actually someone else who's yet to arrive and Alys was just a red herring (a la Quentyn Martell in Meereen). Could it be either of the Jeynes, both of whom are "sisters" of sorts to Jon and have reason to seek his protection? Could the 'grey girl' be Asha Greyjoy? It might be unlikely that the Grey Girl isn't Alys; but given that Alys wasn't depicted in grey and isn't Jon's sister...it's still fun to speculate about. Great video!!

    • @ashleyofnaath
      @ashleyofnaath ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@t_hetty1758I think that's a stretch. I'd think Melisandre could recognize the difference between the skin of a greyscale afflicted person and someone dressed in grey clothing.. she has been around Shireen for the past few years so it's not like she's unaware of what that looks like.

    • @Human-zx4rb

    • @ashleyofnaath
      @ashleyofnaath ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Human-zx4rb So you're saying Melisandre, who's been around Shireen for a minimum of several years now, wouldn't recognize a person whose body was covered with the same skin Shireen has on her face? Mel might err occasionally but she's not that stupid. In fact, when Mel searches the flames to see the grey girl again, she gets a vision of Bloodraven's face- which she describes as wooden and corpse white. So she can make a distinction between texture and color in her visions. Therefore there's no reason to assume Mel couldn't identify a greyscale covered person if she saw one, and there's no reason to think she can't tell the difference between textured skin and clothing. If anything, the misinterpretation was more likely that the girl was Jon's sister or that the girl was fleeing a marriage- not that the person was covered in greyscale rather than grey clothing. Imo. But to each their own my friend :) .

    Eh? I know House Baratheon is technically a new house, but it seems like a continuation of House Durrandon to me. it seems like it's seen that way in the books too, because both Corlys and Olenna call them an ancient house.

    I think you misrepresent the reason for the Karstarks leaving the war, which lets them off the hook significantly. They do have a leader; with Harrion in captivity, they take orders directly from Arnolf back in Karhold. They also still have local battle commanders, presumably, who can be placed under the command of another lord if needed. They don't just get to go "we don't have a boss any more, guess we'll just head home"; they'd have to send to Karhold for orders on whether to follow Robb or desert him, and presumably they got their orders because they did (b). Deserting your king in wartime is a serious crime, however mad you might be at him.
    It's interesting to speculate what would happen to a lord's bannermen if he and his house WERE completely extinguished in battle, though. I'd guess in normal circumstances they'd continue to follow his king until his title was bestowed on someone else, but in this case it's slightly complicated (at least psychologically) by the king being the one to execute him. Probably if a king was knowingly executing the last surviving member of a noble house he would give their lands to a loyal ally in the same breath, both to avoid inheritance disputes and to put down any rebellions the execution might spark among the executee's own loyalists.

    Damn, the North has it really rough, in terms of houses going extinct (EX)/functionally exctinct (FE)/probably going excinct (PE) in the books.
    House Bolton (PB)
    House Cerwyn (FE)
    House Cassel (FE)
    House Flint of Widow's Watch (EX)
    House Hornwood (FE)
    House Locke (FE) since we haven't gotten any confirmed lineage for the Lockes yet.

      This has actually happening quite some times in history where a language ends up having such an influence it ends up displacing or dominating the native language even without conquest for example the Assyrians originally spoke Akkadian but with time changed to Aramaic the Scots also originally spoke gaelic/goidelic but with time got displaced by Scots (depending on who you ask is just scottish english or a different language all together)

      I just like to think GRRM got lazy somehow. It's a huge ass continent, I'm surprised each region didn't developed their own language. And even if it is really all settled by a single group, considering the long timeframes, it would have at least split apart, like how the Romance languages developed from Latin.

    On the Old tongue vs common. Is it ever directly stated that common is andalosi? Maybe its me trying to cope my way out of the huge glaring issue that is language in ASOIAF in westeros, but the only way realistically that I can see common being spoken both by wildings beyond the wall and by the dornish in sunspear is if its a first man language.

    Actually, I think the Girl in Grey is actually Sansa, fleeing from a Marriage ... Tyrion is not Dead yet, but I think she realizes that Littlefinger doesn't plan to let Harry the Heir live for long, probably only long enough that Sansa gets pregnant to have another Heir to the Vale he than can control, better than Robin because it is literally a Baby. So Sansa decides to leave the Vale and go North to Jon. She most likely will travel to the three sisters and from there to White Harbour or she meets Davos who seeks a Crew to sail to Skaggos to find Rikkon. So there is an amount of possibilities for how Sansa can end up in the North at the Wall after Jon's "resurrection".
    The Quotes are for the fact that we have a lot of similarities between Jon's assassination and the Red Wedding, but GRRM says he hates repetition. And I ... then why did he copy Robb's and Catelyn's Death and Aryas knock out by the Hound in nearly every Wound Jon gets? Not in the Show, in the Books. First Jon is stabbed by some Members of the Nights watch and has multiple Wounds like Robb was shot by multiple bolts from the Crossbows, than he takes a cut into the Throat like Catelyn and then he becomes unconscious after someone stabs him in the Back which is the last injury of a Stark we know about, Arya being knocked unconscious by the Hound, I don't remember if the Hound was behind Arya but he was out of sight, so it counts, someone who is out of sight is in your back.
    So if GRRM really hates repetition it is strange that Jon who is betrayed by his own Men, like Robb, is killed with a Copy of all three Starks who were at the Red Wedding.
    There is a Theory on the Internet that Jon is not Dead yet, just on the Brink of Death, like Khal Drogo at the end of AGOT or Bran after his Fall. Mirri Maaz Duur used Blood Magic which she learned in Asshai, the Place Melissandre comes from, Mirri Maaz Duur killed a Horse to save Drogo and told Daenerys that no one was allowed to enter the Tent after she started singing (we all know Daenerys was brought into the Tent by Ser Jorah). So Melissandre uses the same Ritual as Mirri Maaz Duur and this time the Sorceress has a Room with a Door that can be locked, furthermore outside her Room there is Chaos, so if Jon is in Ghost and safes his Body from the Chaos, probably no one would notice that something like a supposedly dead body is missing. Furthermore this time we could see the ritual and hear the Song that Mirri Maaz Duur sang through someone who understands that Language, so we would know what Mirri Maaz Duur did during her time alone in the Tent with Drogo. In terms which Animal Melissandre will kill, it won't be a Ghost, her flames showed her that Jon became a Wolf and then a Man again, she probably knows that Jon is in Ghost, so my bet is on Mormonts Raven.
    It also would fit with the Theme around Melissandre a Priest who uses Glamour and illusions to persuade people to follow her God. Jon doesn't need to be actually dead to be useful to Melissandres Cause to accomplish just that. All she needs is a supposedly dead Body she brought back from the Dead to show the Power of her Lord of Light. All she needs are enough People who saw Jon fall to the Ground shortly before the Chaos started.

      @j-rey- ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also think it is slightly unlikely that Alys is the grey girl. Someone else posted the same thing, that we never actually see Alys wearing grey, but rather Jon and Mel assume that's who the vision was about. And since Karstark colors are black and white, and not grey (though black + white makes grey), I am still not convinced. Sansa being the one is a good guess, as she is hiding her Stark heritage right now (the Stark colors being grey and white) and I can imagine that by the time she makes it to the Wall, she will be revealed as a Stark again, possibly in a grey marriage gown, thus being a grey girl.

    • @Ilargizuri
      @Ilargizuri ปีที่แล้ว

      @@j-rey- I think it will never come to a Marriage between these two or even a reveal. I think she will run away before that. We should not forget, that Sansa Stark is a wanted Woman for Kingsslaying and Cersei really wants to kill Sansa because she thinks Sansa did help to murder Joffrey.
      She did although I think that was only a distraction so that Tyrion would be blamed for the Murder. I mean Littlefinger did that Assassination and he knew that Joffreys cruelty would ensure that everybody would look to the Tyrells at first because they wanted to protect Margery. With the Murder weapon being in Sansa's Hairnet that would switch the suspicion to Tyrion and the Stark Hostage. Littlefinger couldn't have known that Cersei would immediately accuse Tyrion of the Murder.
