    Yes the 50amp 3 prong inlet you are using will work. BUT, I’m fairly certain that inside that inlet it has ground and neutral bonded together. Which is only supposed to be done in a main panel. The trailers main panel is considered a subpanel.
    You would need a four prong 50 amp inlet to keep the neutral and ground separate. Or use a 30 amp 3 prong which keeps neutral and ground separate. Look at the back of a 30amp 3 prong 120v inlet and a 50amp 4 prong 240/120v inlet. You will see that neutral and ground are not bonded together on either of those that you could have used.
    The generator doesn’t bond together it’s neutral and ground. So I’d think it shouldn’t be done in the inlet either

  • @watchstore320
    @watchstore320 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Frank - I set up my electrical just like yours where power is going through one leg in the panel for 120 V. I need 50 amps to run everything in my trailer so 6,000 watts. Most generators allow you to switch between 120/240. If I buy a 6,000 watt generator that has the 120/240 option and leave it on the 120v setting, will I only get 3,000 watts of power or will I get the full 6,000 watts on the 120v setting?

    Nice video. Understood how to calculate the total amps on your 120V panel. The question I have is, what happens when you need a piece of equipment that’s 240 at the same time with 120’s. Do you wire for 240, calculate total available amps based on 240 and as long as total amps doesn’t exceed the 240 calculations is Ok to mixed both 120 and 240 on the same panel? Or you need separate electrical sources for each? Thanks in advance. Hope you are doing well. Saludos !!!

      @@1234569518 He is running a generator that puts out 120v 4200W running. 4200W ÷ 120V = 35A. The max amps he can run is 35A. So if you were using this generator and consumed 2500W you would be using 20.83A. If you purchase a generator that puts out the same 4200W at 240V then the Amps would still be the same but split between two legs. 4200÷240=17.5A per leg.

My question is, when I wire up X, Y, G, W to the breaker box with 50 amp setup, can I still use 30 amp generator with 30 to 50 amp converter plugs? I want to be able to use 240v if needed. • @JamHouseBux
      @JamHouseBux 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      120 is the voltage. omhs law says P = I*V
      So the generators number is in power (P). So you can calculate the current (amps) by P/V=I
      I is current/amps, and a generator usually runs a constant voltage, 120.
      So amps = Watts/120.

    Hey Frank,
    Great video! I bought a food truck with the electrical & generator already installed (but previous owner never used). It’s an old small one that is 3000 watts. The water heater uses 12 amps and the connection looks like it’s 250v. Is the math then 3000/250? If that’s true I would need something that outputs more than 5500 due to the a/c, refrigerator, prep station, and other small electrical items. Am I correct?

    From a food trucker to another. A COMMERCIAL generator should be used. NOT a construction site generator. If it wouldn't pass the noise level in a RV park, you shouldn't buy it. It's horrible and disrespectful to customers and if you do events or rallies, very disrespectful for those of us who actually care and spent money only to have poser food truckers who most of the time aren't even cooks. Why do I have a $7k generator running silently, and a fool comes and tries to "hide" their noisy generator on the side of MY TRUCK to muffle THEIR NOISE... You are starting a food truck business out of passion for food and service. Or you're not... Your execution says it all.

      My 5 food trucks, I have 15 fulltime workers and 5 seasonal workers that been running successfully in southern CA would disagree with you, I spent 300 dollars sound proofing them each one. Did the job myself saved over 24,000 USD doing so over the years brought the noise down to 60 db. If you want to spend 7k on a 15 kw quiet generator, knock yourself out. If you run multiple trucks finding turn key solutions gets astronomically expensive. I don't what passion has do with noise levels but passion to me is working 14 hours a day 7 days a weeks managing a 1.18 million dollar a year business and yes I am know how to cook and manage every section in a kitchen. I started this business saving up money working a minimum wage job.
