“Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.”
― Oscar Wilde is my favourite quote
also Georg Simmel said something like "It appears, that fashion is only fashion, when it stands against every norm"

Mom taught me very early on, the difference between fashion and style. She said the latest fashions were usually fads, and called them "faddish". She said faddish clothing would soon become unpopular, and there would likely be a new fad waiting in the wings to take its place. She was correct, as she almost always was, and I am so grateful for the many amazing life lessons she taught me. Mom substituted the word "style" with classic. She said classic style is timeless, and if you choose to purchase outfits based on this, you will always be dressed appropriately, comfortably, and look effortlessly attractive. I was a pre-teen when she began teaching me this approach to shopping for classic and timeless clothing. It will be a year this coming May since our Momma's passing, and we miss her terribly. Thank you Momma for everything!
    Thank you gentlemen!
    Great job Kyle!

While I am not a huge fan of Kyle's style (I lean more towards Raphael's and Preston's), it is by no means off-putting. However, his fit is almost always hard to look at. EVERYTHING seems to be too tight on him. I get that he is a larger muscular man, but that should be even more of an incentive for him to get clothes that fit. His clothes do not emphasize his silhouette, they make it look like someone gave him clothes 2 sizes too small. He should know better.

Ironically, I only embraced classic men’s style in my 20s as a result of it becoming fashionable here in the UK as a direct reaction to Punk in the early Eighties. The best thing about style is being able to wear stuff you wore 10 or 20 years ago (provided it still fits). There may also be an age element to this. Teenagers desperately want to fit in (as countless teen movies show us), which is why you see groups of them all wearing exactly the same thing, like a uniform. It’s only when you hit 40 that you really start not to care what other people think.

All solid points Kyle! I think, though, you only briefly touched on what I think is the funamental difference between fashion and style, and which I think deserved to be explored more - namely, that style aims to attract attention to the wearer, and fashion aims to attract attention to the clothing. In this way you might say that style comes to the service of the wearer, whereas the wearer comes to the service of fashion, by advertising those garments. I think this point deserved to be explored a bit more in the video. Peace!

Thanks. I do like very much this practical definition of dated/impersonal fashion vs. timeless/personal style. Although you can adapt fashion garments and accessories to create your own fashionable style. And Raphaël's personal style kind of showcases 40's fashion. So that's definitely not a perfect model, but still a handy way to tell what's what.

Fashion comes and goes with trends. Style is forever. Style will always be eye catching. Fashion tries too hard. Style does what it wants, but in a way that comes together well. In a sense, fashion is dictated and unnatural, while style is creative and natural. Fashion is like most modern art where it doesn't appeal naturally, but people tell themselves that it's amazing because of the herd saying it is. Style is like classic art, appealing naturally to the senses and mind of nearly everyone. Fashion is a splotch of black paint on a white canvas that gets called art by some people. Style is the Greek and Roman statues.
Good video rundown of the subject, and the descriptions per section are spot on.

Unlike you gentleman, I’m insulting fashion. The overly baggy, chunky platform sneakers, oversized anything, mixing too many layers of textures and patterns, etc. It’s a mockery of clothing. Anything goes because it’s “artsy” but if everything is art, nothing is art.
Have you ever notice that fashion designer usually wear solid colors and modest looking apparel? Maybe they’re seeing what they can get away with.

I think, considering the famous quote, it would be a good time to talk about Yves Saint Laurent. He replaced Christian Dior himself as Dior's protégé at a relatively young age. The biggest accomplishment he made was making off-the-rack clothes acceptable in high society. From what I remember, his predominant goal was just to make people feel comfortable and happy in their clothes. He was known to be very kind and timid.
During the Algerian War, he was drafted into the French army, but after a mere twenty days of cruel hazing, he was hospitalized. His later years saw him taking heavy drugs. His doctor knew he was going to die, but decided against telling him, knowing he wouldn't be able to handle it.
I think the world would be a much better place with less machoness and more men like Yves Saint Laurent - gentle rather than aggressive, noble rather than selfish, and sensitive rather than full of bravado.

I think style is downstream from fashion. You didn't invent the suits you wear - they were a new fashion at one point. Beau Brummel started a new fashion trend that evolved into the suit. Fashion is the creative engine, some of which can become trendy.
Style is about fashions that stand the test of time, and your style is much more personal. Certain fashions have staying power, like a business suit or a little black dress. The fashions that are widely adopted and have staying power become styles. You dress to a certain style and personalize it in your own way, such as always wearing a 3-roll-2 button enclosure and turn-ups, creating your own personal style. What you personally choose from a particular style of clothing and how you implement it is your personal style.

  • @pjyast

    My take:
Style and fashion are often used interchangeably, but they actually have different meanings.
Style refers to a person's individual way of dressing and expressing themselves through clothing, accessories, and personal grooming. It reflects a person's personality, preferences, and lifestyle. Style is more personal and enduring than fashion, and it is not necessarily tied to current trends.
Fashion, on the other hand, refers to the current popular styles and trends in clothing, accessories, and beauty products. It is more transient and often changes seasonally or even more frequently. Fashion is driven by designers, retailers, and media, and it is often influenced by cultural and social trends.
In summary, style is an individual expression of one's personality and preferences, while fashion is a collective expression of current trends and styles.

A good example would be James Bond. James Bond, as played by multiple actors over the decades, has always dressed in a traditional British style, but has never looked “old fashioned”. James Bond respects classic British style, but does not ignore current fashion trends. Sometimes it works perfectly well, and sometimes it doesn’t.
What is, perhaps, most important, is to stick to good, well-balanced proportions that complement your body, and pick a tasteful color palette.

I would disagree style is something that looks stylish on everyone a quality shirt will good on most people if they know how to style it right while a tshirt only looks half good if you have some muscle and can fill it out a good example is asking a skinny person to wear a tshirt they will end up looking homeless and hungry looking due the excess fabric and even if you fit the arms on a tshirt it will make your arms look even skinnier now while skinny people can get a fitted suit and there skinny shape will actually suit it that’s the difference. Style is something that can universally fit most people and make them look good.
