  • Do you develop a rash or irritation after applying sunscreen? Could your favorite sunblock be the culprit? Dr. Bowe breaks down everything you need to know about sunscreen allergies- including the different types of allergic reactions, their symptoms, and possible triggers. If you think you have a sunscreen allergy, find out what skincare ingredients you should avoid to prevent both allergic and nonallergic reactions. What type of sunscreen should you use if you have allergy-prone or sensitive skin? See Dr. Bowe’s best sunscreen product recommendations below. Don’t forget that wearing SPF alone isn’t enough to protect yourself from the sun. Dr. Bowe recommends investing in UPF clothing for added UV protection- see her favorite products below.

I tried numerous sunscreens which claimed to be “mineral only”, but most of them caused me to get a rash on my face. I just recently found out that many sunscreens which claim to be “mineral only” also contain a chemical called Butyloctyl Salicylate, so they are actually hybrid sunscreens. Luckily I found a brand which is free of this chemical & now I have no more rashes!

Same. It’s beyond a pain and has kept me from using sunscreen for 40 years. Now I use Nuturium Glow Moisturizer. Hasn’t caused me any issues and I’ve been using it for months daily.

Yep! This is why I love my Japanese sunscreens, when they say mineral they really do mean it.

    Hi Dr. Bowe,
Is it possible to be extremely sensitive to titanium dioxide. My eye skin gets very sensitive and itchy when I use any sunscreen or powder mineral makeup that has it. Now I'm dealing with an allergic reaction to a cetaphil redness relief spa 40, that has 10% Tit. Diox. and 5% zinc (zinc doesn't bother me), now I'm dealing with flakes and small micro bumps all over my face and extreme irritation on my eyes with flakes that look terrible. My eyes were the first part to show irritation., then the next day the bumps all over started. Another reason I think I might be sensitive to TD is that when I used the notoriously gentle Vanicream cleanser, I get super red and irritated immediate reaction and interestingly it has titanium dioxide in it (odd thing to be in a cleanser)....
Can one be sensitive or allergic to Titanium Dioxide & get this kind of reaction? or is it more likely a preservative in the sunscreen.
Thank you for any help! My derm can't get me in for a couple months.

I think I’m allergic to zinc. I’ve been using zinc “ mineral “ sunscreen for years and recently become itchy. Is this possible?

Thank you for this video and sunscreen recommendations. I love Skinceuticalls but it only contains 6% of zinc and 5% titanium. Do you think is enough? thanks

Great question. the % of zinc is less important than the overall formulation. I've seen some incredibly brilliant cosmetic chemists achieve very high SPF values from surprisingly low %'s of active ingredients. It's more about the homogenous distribution of the particles across the skin.

My chin eclipses the sun, I have vitiligo and sunscreen seems to make me break out into a "Butterfly Rash". Accross the nose, chin and forehead only.

    Thank you for this!
I've had a burning sensation (but no rash) - is that normal ???- with the Bioderma Photoderm 50+ Milk, wich has Octocrylene, bisoctrixole, avobenzone and bemotrizinol. No fragrance, no essential oil, no scent whatsoever, targeted for sensitive skin. I'm in Canada. I was so sad it didn't work. + It burned my eyes so bad because I have pollen allergies and were outside. Mineral sunscreens are so hard to rub off, my skin burn after wiping my face a single time with a cotton pad OR using a cleansing oil on Dry skin (wet skin is fine, but then it doesnt clean) :(...
It's so difficult to find a daily sunscreen. I have another mineral + chemical sunscreen with octocrylene (Cera Ve AM) and I'm fine with that one. Unfortunately it leaves an ugly white film.
I also got pimples on my body after using Vicky Capital Soleil UV sport on my neck and chest. The only common ingredient between these 2 products is Avobenzone. I don't normally get pimples on my body.
If you have any recommandations, Ill take them thanks!

I have this issue with sunscreens and I’ve been loving the Anessa mineral sunscreen by shiseido, a little pricey but it’s worth it. It’s water soluble so it emulsifies and washes off like a cleansing oil when you rinse your face with water. It comes in a cream as well as spray form. Try it out !

Dr. Bowe- every sunscreen (and even makeup product) I apply causes little pimples to crop up around my nose. Do you have any tips for figuring out what may be causing that? I’ve tried eliminating ingredients, double cleansing, using powders vs creams, etc. but it still happens.

Without seeing you in person it's hard to assess, but it's worth a visit to the derm to rule out something like periorificial dermatitis. There a number of prescriptions that can help with that, along with avoiding specific triggers in skincare and cosmetics. Good luck!
