Part 2 of a series outlining the restoration of a 1958 Glass Magic Playmaster boat. In this episode I cover fiberglass layup and a tool review for a wet sanding system by Quick Cut Sanders
The thing that makes you one of my favorite TH-camrs is that even after 8 years you haven’t changed how YOU want to do your videos. You’ve stayed true to your format and stuck with it even after 8+ years. This is why I will continue to watch every Sunday. Keep up the great work! Glad I found this series
Really enjoying these video's, about 20 years ago I did a lot of boat repairs and refinishing with my step father, many different boats and everything from small patch work to a full restore I did to a 1962 starline (I think) cabin cruiser. Thanks for the time you put in to bring these video's to us.
Hi Andy all the way from the UK. Just thought i would say how much i enjoy your videos, although i am a car mechanic i find your videos so informative that just adds to topping up my knowledge. Keep up the cracking (no pun intended) videos. ATVB Regards Roger
Yes, however if using epoxy I don't know that I would recommend using CSM for the glass material. Certain applications are OK, but if you're doing a large enough area that adhesive is needed to hold things in place there are other types of glass that may work a little better. Hope this helps! Thanks for the comment :-)
Andy is laying glass on a plywood hull the same as you did here? the difference I seen from another of your videos is to lay resin first to seal the wood so the csm will bond with it. I'm looking to completely cover the hull to waterproof and strengthen the project. Thanks for your videos they have taught me a lot.
Thanks Andy. I am on it, I have been using 60 & 80 grit paper. Maybe my sander isn't turning fast enough , I can stop it by pushing on it with very little pressure.
Hi Andy, Well I laid up my first CSM on a stress crack across the back of the stern. Gel-coated to seal and sanded off the next day. I made one error I think, I got my glass a little to high. Sanded the area down, check the flatness and YAHOO! I thank I want to go with resin with wax, as the gel-coat was really tough to sand off. Would I do the lay up, and when I am done, coat it with the resin with wax?
So had a similar boat. Fins not as high and smooth sides. Now sorry got ride of it after watching your videos. Question, making a plug for mold following video from total boat. They covered mold with the Awlgrip 505 (?) epoxy paint. Around $100 for paint and converter. Mold out of pink panther insulation foam gonna cover with epoxied fiberglass. Is there something else cheaper that I can cover glass with to wax for mold?
I believe it was the 77.. There are other options avail also. Whichever you use, just make sure to use it sparingly; use only enough to hold things in place and no more :-) Good luck!
Hello, Thanks for all the helpful videos. I'm about to start a project and was wondering if 1708 is better than CSM to beef up the hull? I figure I'd ask an expert.
Just discovered this channel, via the SailBros one. Great stuff, congrats! Would you consider doing videos on what to look for when buying a fixer-upper boat? You seem like a very knowledgeable and accessible person! A rare combination.
Andy, so with the 3M adhesive, the fiberglass will bond to the hull just by wetting the glass out? I have an overhead situation where I need to glass the underside of a floor on a sailboat. It is water ballasted, so I am glassing using slightly thickened epoxy for a good water seal. Will the 3M adhesive suffice in a situation like this? Working overhead in a very confined space is a challenge. This technique would help considerably. Thanks!
Your videos are great! Very helpful. I do have a question. You mentioned that you tacked your mat in place before wetting out with 3M spray adhesive. Will this technique work when using epoxy as well? Thanks.
thank you, but I was referring to using fiberglass cloth, instead of using csm, I was curious if using the cloth when glassing a boat that is constructed keel down, instead one that is constructed keep up, it sounds like a fantastic idea. None the less!!!!
Your an excellent teacher . After you build up the repair with fiber glass and its dried ,then sanded does the fiber glass lose strength after sanding ? Thanks again
Hi, as someone who enjoys your videos and respects your knowledge and craftsmanship I am going to see a Blackwatch 30 express today. Do you have an opinion on these vessels? it's a 1998 original open checkbook boat with 2005 cummins 270 hp with 875 hours on repower. Any insight you can provide is appreciated
Hi Andy, Great videos - fantastic help and inspiration for a self-builder like me. I’m in the middle of a restoration project on a classic 20feet motorboat and have come to the glass laying phase. So one question: You mention that you use a 3M spray adhesive to tack the fiberglass mat before applying the epoxy. What kind of adhesive are you using 3M 74, 77 or ? Many thanks for your response Greetings from Denmark Hasse
Can I paint over polyester resin w/ wax or do I have to use something to clean it first? What kind of fairing compound and paint did you use? Thanks! I really enjoy watching your videos!!
I am rebuilding a 1984 Scott Craft Bass boat. I need to know how to prepair the bottom hull to apply carbon fiber. The carbon fiber is just for looks. The hull is in good shape. I need to black out the hull before applying the carbon fiber. Do I use black epoxy or black gel coat?
Dude love your show..cant wait to see whats next...Starting a new career after 45 years in the auto restoration fields..Now you are teaching me something i have ALLWAYS wanted to do..Starting out with adds on craigslist..Three days in..three new friends letting me..paying me to work on there boats..So Thankyou..god bless all of you..Now i have a question..in the tube out there is a company that does soda blasting..they say it safe enough that you dont even have to mask up the glass rubber etc..What are your thoughts on this...
The guys I've seen do it usually blast within an inch or so of the gelcoat and they do a pretty good job. Having that little band around the top of the waterline is pretty quick to sand off :-)
Hey Larry, The laminating resin with wax will be just as difficult (or more) as the gel to sand :-( Depending on the grit paper you're using, it really shouldn't be too difficult. I'd use 60-80 grit paper :-) But to answer your Q, after the layup has tacked up, then go over top with another coat of resin with wax additive.. Hope this helps! Any Q's send a couple of pics to my Facebook page!! Thanks!
Thanks, I think.. I guess I don't see any harm in mentioning a good tool (especially when I have nothing to gain if someone buys one ;-) Just trying to prevent a few sore shoulders out there!
i am very happy with your video it helps alot but i need to the V in the bow of my boat on the under side how do it how would i do it on most videos i have only seen flat surface repairs
great vid thanks im starting on a 68 larson lapline :) dont know much about doing a boat restoration your videos are a big help ! do you sell products too?
I recently inquired about restoring my 1960 14' crosby runabout with a fiberglass boat shop, they said it is a 60 year old boat. They did not recommend it. Obviously they began that it was going to cost thousands of dollars. I dont want the boat to be brand new, I do want it restored to working condition, but taking into condideration the fiberglass and gelcoat. any opinions?
I have a 1982 vanguard banshee mark 2 with a slightly rotten transom and the floor is quite soft. I'm wondering if anyone has any pointers or tips on what I should do
How do you keep the fiberglass on the surface, not peeling away, while applying layer 2? Since you can't reapply the adhesive while the polyester is wet?
Okay, so I have a 13' Boston Whaler with lots of alligators running vertically on the sides. Can I just sand the gelcoat a bit and glass over them? Then do I have to gelcoat over or can I just fair n paint?
+Dan Fall After you have the new glass down, sanded and fared you can them move onto priming and painting. No need to gelcoat beforehand. You will, however need to go over top of the glass with something to seal the top later from air so it can sully cure. Either PVA, or another coat of poly resin with wax mixed in will do the job!
Hi Andy I been watching for years and just wanted to say your doing great, I found a glass magic boat my self and yes there is barely any info out there. so my ? is in the first episode you stated that you where going to do a cosmetic repair, Now me looking back you did a lot of work on the boat re-skinning and other stuff do you think if they where to put a motor on there ! would there be any issues because there work you did was outstanding and it looked to be more then cosmetic
Hello friend, I have a yacht and I want to fill it or put it together I would like to know if I can use it for the primer of my yacht. The putty they use for the carts can I use it as a primer?
I'm starting a project, building a trailerable, plywood houseboat. The 3m adhesive sounds like an idea I can use on the large areas that I will be glassing over, Thanks. If I'm wrong please say so.
Charles Cain I probably wouldn't use caulking in an area that you will be laying glass over as it won't bond. If you need something that can flex a bit without cracking try using Pettit Flex-epoxy at the joint, then glass over that :-)
Thanks, was thinking of a way to control large sections of glass, going on the bottom and side, see shantyboats. Figure easier to use an adhesive, to hold glass in place, then wet it out with epoxy, prefer epoxy to vinyl?
Awesome work i really wish i wasn't scared to do it myself. I have a 42 ft trimaran sailboat that needs a lot of work. Can you help it wiuld be a great project boat for your show. Lol

You have taught me alot. Thanks andy
Thanks Rog! Things have been a little crazy here lately but I am hoping to get back on track shortly :-) I appreciate the feedback!
Very informative videos! Thanks for making the effort to share your knowledge with us.
Great info!!
Keep it coming. I've learned so much. Very detailed and informative. Good quality audio and video too!
Thanks!!!
WOW, you just answered 90 % of my questions.
Fantastic job

Just a little safety tip. When your not using your table saw, you should crank the blade below the table. In case of accidental start up.
I really like your videos, and yes I am interested in knowing more about spray adhesives and resin infusions please post

that is a great idea, and i was curious does that hold true with epoxy, ie, using 3m adhesive to hold up fiberglass
Absolutely Magnificent.....

Gord Brink Flat, curved, etc it's all done the same. Remove the damaged material, taper the edges and layer in the new glass :-)
Hey nice video, do you thing restoring a boat as old as this one would be safe if done by an amateur?
great vid thanks im starting on a 68 larson lapline :) dont know much about doing a boat restoration your videos are a big help ! do you sell products too?
what 3M spray adhesive did you use.

almost all of the gelcoat that was used as a seal / cure coat over the poly and glass was sanded off as part of the prep for fairing with epoxy..
Okay, so I have a 13' Boston Whaler with lots of alligators running vertically on the sides. Can I just sand the gelcoat a bit and glass over them? Then do I have to gelcoat over or can I just fair n paint?

Did u put glass over the gel coat

what is the liquid that you are using in part 1:58 to put down the fibreglass on the cracks?
Hello friend, I
have a yacht and I want to fill it or put it together I would like to
know if I can use it for the primer of my yacht. The putty they use for the carts can I use it as a primer?
Yes I would like to know more about the 3m glue.
Don't do too much with the retail side of things. If you're looking to order materials I can give some recommendations on where I get my stuff :-)
I dunno if you're answering questions but how did you get such a long working time out of the resin?
Just worked really fast and mixed small batches of resin :-)
Hello a greeting would you like to know if you can staple or mash the boat with that paste used to staple or mash cars?
I'm starting a project, building a trailerable, plywood houseboat. The 3m adhesive sounds like an idea I can use on the large areas that I will be glassing over, Thanks. If I'm wrong please say so.

just a good quality polyester laminating resin (NOT from the big box stores or auto places; order from a composite retailer!) :-)
Sorry, but the fiberglass has got on gelcoat ? congratulations for the job
The link for allamericantoolcorp.com is broken. I was really interested in buying one of those sanders. They appear to be non existent.
Thanks andy catchy tune
