This guy is the real deal and knows his craft well. I was taught by some old school painters like him and can appreciate listening to him talk all day.
love the tutorial ... hes wearing a dust mask good ,using the festool sander awesome, also boat travels through water stem to stern so hes sanding with the grain also taking off very little paint letting the sander do the work ..ill give Louis a thumbs up ... would like to see how he paints where stands are located ... thanks again
Thank you so much for your spot on tips for boat painting. I just got my first motorboat, and getting it ready for summer. You are the greatest guide for my project. It has been a lake boat, and as i live on island, it's going to be a sea boat. sanding, primer and antifoldin, wax and should be ready to go :)
I use a scraper to take off all but a scuff to clean gelcoat, then apply 4 coats of interprotect 2000e and 3 coats of ablative. But you can do it this way too.
Great video. Are you sanding to remove all of the previous bottom paint or sanding simply to remove surface debris and rough the surface for new bottom paint?
A good two part epoxy paint designed to be a barrier coat is the best recommendation, In fact the entire bottom should have a epoxy barrier coat applied to the gel coat before the very first coat of bottom paint is ever applied. It is the only way to ensure that you will not have blisters in the gel coat.
Use of personal protective devices is strongly suggested when using paint removal tools. Gloves, eye protection, long pants, long sleeves, and a hooded blouse shirt. Some clothing articles, of which are worn may need discarded, or thrown away after paint sanding. Older bottom paints may contain lead, which is hazardous to ears, eyes, nose and throat, as well as skin from prolonged exposure.
Great video!! Very informative. I have a jeep Cherokee (XJ) lift gate that I am looking to sand. I don't want to use a power sander. should I use blocks instead to do it?
I sanded my sailboat bottom down to the gel coat and took all the bottom paint off I'm thinking of putting another coat of gel coat on is it necessary ?
It is a random orbit sander, the power doesn't matter much. A 6" will let you cover more area faster, but a 5" will do it. I have owned several and they were all similar. A cheap one will not last as long, but it will do the job (with more vibration and noise). I would wear earplugs as well as a good dust mask or respirator, depending on what the old paint is.
Sorry dog jumped in my lap. This guy is one of my new gods along with my x-wife. Ok I obviously need more counseling !!! Great video!!! None of the (see my pretty face) for 2 to 5 minutes of the video !!! When i make my mega million dollar grossing movie i will use you as the director !!!
While you explain about moving the side support @ 3.30 - 4.16. I am drawn to the view of the support on the other side of the boat. This side support has no 2x4 planks in place to movie the support on that side. I am also very concerned that the 2x4 supporting the side supports could slip with the vibration from the sander and the boat fall onto someone sanding the side of the boat. I have to ask. Are you making this up as you go along?
He's been sanding and painting boat bottoms for decades, you do what you need to do. Meanwhile, he gets the job done safely, that's why he demonstrated not removing the stand, just sliding it. You can do that even without timber to support two legs.
Allergic reaction to the paint or buffing compound. Either take some benadryl or see a doctor. I know this is a bit late, but maybe it will help someone else. Also, most drug stores now carry a "shielding lotion/liquid glove", no reason not to put it on exposed skin when sanding/polishing old paint. Always good to take any precautions you can to protect your health. Did it affect any other exposed skin areas, or just your face?
@@hotrodhog2170 You're an idiot. Boil his face? I sure hope he was smart enough to not follow your suggestion. You could be legally liable for anyone who does, in most states.
It depends if you want to sand all the way down to the gel coat, what I did to my boat was I just put a 80 grit pad on my desalt sander and just put a quick pass all the way around the boat to rough it up so the paint would stick you don't have to always sand down to the gel coat, I would only sand down to gel coat if you had a couple years worth of paint on the bottom
looks not very safe and dusty when you have sander like that ,, need proper North mask w chem filter as well as dust filter ,, 2 your sanding should go w the shape of the boat Re up and down , so you dont make troughs and looks uneven ,, also sanding alittle bit like that just makes the existing paint thinner therefor flakes when re-applying ,, bare spots should be epoxied ,, just sayin ,, been doin this for along time !

taking my hull down for fairing and repaint, 1956 Chris Craft 26' Cruiser. Lou is my guru.
Have watched a few times in readiness to painting my boat feel much more confident now many thanks from the lockdown 😢 Uk 👍🏻

Thank you! this was very helpful for a 1st timer!
Some good common sense advice , and well explained , thank you .
The sander made fast work of preparing the bottom for paint. Good to see that heavy buildup of paint being taken down to the gel coat.
Wisdom comes with age Nice job. When you finish sanding do you wash it before painting?
Nice sander. That brand is out of my budget, but I'd love to have some tools from their catalogue.
I use a scraper to take off all but a scuff to clean gelcoat, then apply 4 coats of interprotect 2000e and 3 coats of ablative.

Very helpful video. Is a barrier coat not necessary before you apply new bottom paint? Or is only sanding necessary?
Finally a good video on this
Excellent video Mate, thanks so much for sharing 👌😎
Excellent video. Informative and Very good delivery
Trying to absorb as much of this as possible....would love to just trailer my Winterhawk over to ya 😆
Louis.. always knows how to get it done, right.,
Louis you the man. All your videos are very informative. As for the nay-Sayers, opinions are like ass holes, everyone has one and they all stink.
charming..
Love this guy! I'm going to paint my boat soon.
Please know what to do. Maybe this is a nice man, only his work...
Great video. Are you sanding to remove all of the previous bottom paint or sanding simply to remove surface debris and rough the surface for new bottom paint?
Thank you for asking this question. I was going to ask the same question.
fantastic video great work very informative
It looks like a few areas are sanded down the the gelcoat....is there a barrier coat paint that can be used just for those areas?
A good two part epoxy paint designed to be a barrier coat is the best recommendation, In fact the entire bottom should have a epoxy barrier coat applied to the gel coat before the very first coat of bottom paint is ever applied. It is the only way to ensure that you will not have blisters in the gel coat.
For sure. It's a missed opportunity to have a hull this close to ready for a barrier coat and not do it.
Great tips sir! Love your channel. New sub here!
love your channel too, Great to see you digging into the project. I did the same on my last three boats. Love the sailing life.
Thanks for sharing sir
What would happen if you powerwashed the bottom, but painted the bottom without sanding it?
I love these videos
Why is sanding necessary prior to repainting instead of removing the paint with a paint remover?
Great video, very helpfull.
Great job

Depends. Does it have hard or ablative antifouling paint on it?
I think it will look better what do you say ?
To re-gel coat do you have to put MEKP in the gel coat?
I sanded my sailboat bottom down to the gel coat and took all the bottom paint off I'm thinking of putting another coat of gel coat on is it necessary ?
Great video. Thanks.
This guy is one of my new gods along with my x-wife. Ok I obviously need more counseling !!! Great video!!! No see my pretty fact 2 to 5 minitues
Pretty cool guy
Thanks
what is the power of your sanding tool, please in Watts? there is a great variety of them available.

I approve of this picture show
good tips
what brand of sander
Hello. We are looking at a 50 foot steel boat, but it has major surface rust on the hull. Can we use the same process? What do you suggest?
Josiana Greenaway call your local Dustless Blasting company.
They're mobile and 100 times cleaner & quicker than this insanity.
No and find a welder.
Josi I'm exactly at the start of the same situation, what did you end up doing?
pues si no has hecho nada
What brand of boat is that.
Is nobody gonna talk about the video quality for 6 years ago?
Can you tell me the model number of the festool sander you used?
Looks like a 150.
Louis, love your stuff.
Bottom painting is not big deal, just read the manual and get the right tool for the job.
2.40 just turn the boat around ?

Bad info. I bottom painted my boat like this 4 years ago and now my hull has blisters. Exposed gel coat needs to be barrier coated.
paint prep is extremely important it doesn’t matter the type of paint if it’s applied wrong or to an improperly prepped surface
Louis for a guy that' stress energy what about all that' lead base Going into your pours

4.53 still no 2x4 sliding planks under the support on the other side?
5.60 we see flash of you used a second plank to slid the support long. So we go from always doing something to never doing something. Sound advice.
I buffed my brothers boat and now my face is burning and drying up the last few day, any idea why and wat to do ??
Soak your face in boiling hot water for 10 minutes then apply sunscreen

Doesn't sanding damage the gel coat?

I think I'd like to use something a bit more substantial than paper masks while sanding antifouling. That stuff is highly carcinogenic.
Why not use a chemical stripper?
Messy, expensive, you end up having to sand anyway. May as well sand the whole thing to begin with. Sandpaper is much cheaper than stripper.
I am 69 . And doing this job on my Albin Vegas..And I hope it the last time 😝 haha
how to wed paint or splatter paint
No dewaxing before sanding??

Sooo, you have been doing it longer than Lou has?
Would recommend proper charcoal filtered respirator, paint suit and gloves. This paint contains mega toxic chemicals.
Gloves, eye protection, keep the mask on.
64 Jesus I thought he was at least 105
He's that slow he'll be 105 when the video ends 😂🤣
