And in 3 minutes they are ready.. Violin Prabhakar sir, Napoleon Selvaraj sir, Sekar Ramachandra sir, Keyboardist Barani sir and other musicians on stage - Wow what a team..!! Salute to you all. The final product is played at 50:01. Its rich and catchy. It does not require to be listened a number of times to grow on you!! Because it has a lot of aesthetics and intellectual quality inherently built into it. On one hand this demonstrates the difference between random musical ideas which are compiled as songs Vs composing for a situation. The (fictitious) situation given to him here is that "A son sets out to kill his father' and he imagines the tune as a variant of the lullaby which the father would have sung to the son in his childhood. The melody is one of a lullaby while the rhythm arrangement carries an unresolved tension. And on the other hand the musical quality behind the various lines written here, particularly given their spontaneity, is astounding.. The harmony rhythm track (that is split between Cello and keyboard) is reasonably challenging to play in unison, while he seamlessly switches between western and Carnatic lingo to explain the notes and the chord track to his team. In all you can witness an unquestionable Musical Authority in action. What a true master class that was... A powerful demo to show others what is composing and how it is done.. !! Thank you IFFI for giving us this opportunity of a lifetime. PS: Also at a moment's notice, how the teamu pulls off "Aye zindagi", arguably the song with most challenging prelude in all of Indian film history @ 58:41.. Wow, again. I am a regular listener of Ilayaraja and here I loved the way Mr. Raja is disciplining these overenthusiastic people who are shouting. It has become a habit of people to hoot and scream instead of simple disciplined clapping... people may call it old schooled but I believe there needs to be a discipline among audience. Particularly the youth too... loved this act of Mr. Ilayaraja.
Raja sir- knows only Music and he lives and breathes it. He is not a performer - he doesnt need colorful visual effects or dancers nor does he need fashion designed costumes. He doesnt have a marketing team. He is pure music that just dives straight into your heart. Thats why u can just see ppl smiling, crying and flying inspite of themselves.

It might look like it took 20 minutes for him to compose the music, but we need to notice that he actually finished composing in 5 minutes. The time between that and the final output was actually taken up by the band to learn it (it is a great band, BTW).

The questions should be related to music, techniques, the process involved etc..not his personal or career stories.

There is no doubt he's a musical genius of which I'm nobody to certify that whatsoever. As far as my knowledge is concerned , Balki is somebody who took him to Bollywood in recent times and showed Bollywood how genius his music is.
Very true, it is an old city - the musical capital of India with a strong cultural and historical reference. There is no need for Balki to ridicule the city.
