Woodturning: Rivers In The Desert!

- Desert Ironwood is one of the hardest and heaviest woods in the world, and this log came from a subscriber! Thank you, Larry! Consequently, this piece was commissioned for him. He also has no idea what the finished piece looks like, so he will see it for the first time in this video, which might make him my new favorite customer!
This project presented many challenges, not the least of which was the requirement for stabilization. Although the finished piece showed very little resin, it was impossible to mount the log safely on the lathe with those deep cracks running through. So, that meant filling voids and stabilizing the entire piece by drowning it in resin. Although I generally prefer to remove the bulk of excess resin using carbide tools, I had planned and hoped to use traditional tools to refine the shape once it got down to the bare wood. In what little experience I have, what I am always certain of is that traditional tools are vastly superior to carbide tools when turning wood, and the finished piece would be 99% wood. However, the freshly sharpened bowl gouges were dulling immediately, causing the tool to bounce on the uneven surface. Oddly, however, the bowl gouges were only useful on the end grain. I fairly certain that the desert ironwood on the side grain was harder than the resin. I'm probably wrong about that, but that's what it felt like.
There were a number of refreshing changes that this piece allowed for me, and one of those what the opportunity to use a traditional oil/wax finish. This vase was not required to be waterproof, so that opened up more options for shaping concepts. Resin finishes have a hard time adhering to sharp angles and edges, which means resin finishes require continuous curves. I wanted this piece to feature a sharp transition between the slender curve up from the base to the swooping under curve of the neck. This shape allows for the end grain to be featured as well as the side grain of the heart wood. This piece would have become too narrow if I had turned away all of the sap wood (the lighter wood). The blue resin also ended up growing on me. I thought it might be too loud of a color choice, but I think it adds a subtle detail that doesn't take too much away from the natural beauty of the wood.
Let me know what you think of this piece! Comment below and smash that like button! I love to read the comments, and I respond to as many of them as I can. Also, your engagement helps support my goal of funding a new workshop. I'm also considering opening a Patreon page where I would offer exclusive perks like added voice-over commentary on my videos, consultations, frequent shop updates, behind-the-scenes content, and much more. Let me know if you'd be interested in something like that.

"Thanks for watching!" Are you kidding!? It was a privilege!!!! David, thanks so much. Absolutely gorgeous!! Absolutely incredible!
I appreciate that, Elizabeth! You’re very kind!
So lovely. Thank you
Absolutely Mouth-watering gorgeous...❗🙇♂️
Even your equipment is incredible..❗
Take it you must have designed and built all your own specialized turning equipment..⁉️🤔
Keep up the good work..❗
Shalowm ❗🙇♂️
The ironwood’s natural cracks are really accentuated by that beautiful purple-blue colour, it contrasts very nicely with the golden tones of the wood.
Thanks so much!
Ended up looking like Koroit opal
You may not do many videos but when you do, they are worth the wait. That piece is gorgeous! The ironwood has such a beautiful colour and grain to it. The resin was just enough and highlights it well. You also picked the right finish for it. I am very impressed by your work! ❤
Thank you so much! I got a late start this year but I’m hoping to send more videos this year.
Stunning! The transition from wood to epoxy gives it an ancient look and feel. Truely beautiful.
Thank you! ✌️
What a lovely piece. The epoxy color really accentuates the contrast of the wood. One of your cleanest pieces yet. Glad to see another video, hope all is well!
Thank you very much!
THX. It's a delight❤😊
This is stunning. Absolutely beautiful. You are a true artist. Your work will last for centuries, these works will stay in families for hundreds of years of they will find their way to museums. God Bless you sir, you are very gifted.
Ok
My GOD...that is magnificent! I watch a LOT of turning videos, and I haven't seen anything this stunning in AGES! The rich dramatic colors and movement of the antique wood grain, accented by the delicate flashes of deep, celestial blue...just GORGEOUS!!! That's a museum piece right there! 😍😍😍
Wow, thank you, Kate!
I was hoping to see another video for a while and yeeeaaah here it is. I'm so caught up in the video that when you blew the sawdust out I caught myself squeezing my eyes 😂.
Such a beautiful result exquisite!!!
Thank you David
Thanks so much, Sandra!
@@DavidAdamsen you're welcome
This piece just glows!! Almost want to fill it with fairy lights instead of flowers!!!
I follow a few woodturners who do very fine work, but your channel is my favorite. Always head and shoulders above the rest. I also love the music selections you include in your videos. Keep the content coming!
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate that. I still have lots to learn!
Congratulations to you David and also to Larry, you created and now Larry owns one of the best turned wooden vases in the world IMO! The highlights of that blue resin is perfect in this piece of art. 👍🏼
Wow, thank you!
I have a bunch of "issue-ridden" wood that I want to turn and just started using resin. Thank you for giving me some confidence.
Thanks for watching, George! You got this. Have fun and stay safe!
I freaking love how this looks David!!!!!
Thanks Luke!
As one of your viewers commented “A privilege” to watch such a magnificent result come about. Thank you!
master at work. It is my absolute dream to...just...make...one piece of art at a workshop like this, under the training of a master like you. Amazing. I'm in awe my friend. Keep on turning.
Thanks so much! I started small on a very tight budget, and I learned by watching others on TH-cam. There are so many insightful and experience woodturners on this platform.
I was so happy to see a new video from you. And as always, simply gorgeous!
Thank you so much for watching!
Amazing! I am beyond words. Plenty of others already spoke of the contrast of the piece and how clean it looks.. every moment where the lathe stopped turning I would catch glimpses of the work and thought "OMG he did it again WOAH!"
Then the reveal at the end.. it's spectacular!
Keep up the great work brother!
Thanks so much!!
You outdo yourself with every video. What a treat!
Thanks Brian!
Wow, gorgeous transformation!! Beautifully done
Thank you so much! ✌️🫶
Damn... I have no words, David! Amazing work! 😮

Can I just say WOW! That is absolutely stunning. I rely enjoy watching your creations, but I have to say this is by far my favorite. You brought out all the beauty and color of the wood.
Just beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Kate ✌️
You are a true artist David love your videos always. And thanks for sharing your creativity.
Thanks, I appreciated you watching!
I know I say this every time, but seriously, you are truly a gifted artist. This piece is exquisite! I hope to one day have David Adamsen artwork in my home. Bravo, and blessings!!
Thanks Cynthia! I appreciate that!
I'm gasping. Just so incredibly beautiful. It's some kind of magic meld between your intention and the inner shapes and character of the wood. Some kind of inspiration in choosing the epoxy colors. The shaping and color of the piece as you were turning it made it look like red pottery. And then you polished it and I about fainted. All the lines appeared, like spires and buttes in a desert landscape. Just so incredibly beautiful.
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching ✌️
Hello David, I've been hoping for you to turn Ironwood, I live in Arizona so I was very excited when I saw that this piece was sourced from here. What a gorgeous piece of work, especially with the purple -blue resin. You do such amazing work and I always look forward to your videos.
Thanks so much for watching!
perfectly! amazing combination of wood texture and vase shape. I take off my hat.👏
Thanks!!
I started thiking "another woodturning video where the result will neve show the potential beauty of the wood used in it. I was SO wrong! Thanks for the video and beautyful result
Thank you very much!
I'm completely amazed, your talent is more than I can express.
You have inspired me to get my own lathe when I relocate to my new home and start something like what your doing, thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks so much! That means a lot. Stay safe and have fun turning!
What an absolutely beautiful and stunning piece. You are so very skilled David. Larry is a very lucky guy!!
Thank you very much!
Interesting to see dry wood come so lovely.
You are my absolute favorite wood turner and video maker. Best n YT.
Wow, thank you!
Magnificent piece!! Thanks for taking us along!!
Thanks for watching!
Having the laser guide the blind interior work is quite ingenious. I always learn something about lathe work watching your content. You are a master of your craft in both woodturning and making excellent videos. Thank you
Thanks Matthew. Someone smarter than me came up with that system. Lots more to learn though!
You certainly got down and dirty with it, David. I did not know ironwood could look so exquisitely beautiful. Lucky Larry!!!
Thanks! Yes it’s tough to work with but worth it!
The dust is nasty!
Маэстро как всегда, на высоте👍👍👍🤝🤝🤝
Thank you!
Well, there you go again. You picked up where you left off and continue to turn beautiful pieces of wood. I have many pieces of Iron wood that have been carved by hand. They are simple pieces I bought over the years. But, they are no way near the quality in what you turned. You took turning this wood to a new level of beauty. Awesome!!!!!
Thank you, John! This stuff is no joke and really a slow turn, especially when your bits are dull. I learned that the hard way….
@@DavidAdamsenIronwood comes out of northern Mexico and Arizona area in the Sonoran Desert. It has become a scarce wood due to it being over exploited for its desirable characteristics. In Mexico, it is now protected species of wood. Even if one picks up a broken piece from the ground and takes it for personal use, it would be considered a crime there and get one thrown into a Mexican jail; a place a person definitely does not want to be in. US jails and prisons are country clubs in comparison.
Wow good thing I don’t live in Mexico…
Museum quality for sure ❤. Love your work 💖.
Thanks Catherine!
So pretty!!! From beastly to beautiful. Thank for sharing!!! All the pieces of wood in the burn pile.
Thank you very much, Kathy!
It turned out so pretty!!
Thank you, Kristina! ❤️
What an absolutely exquisite piece. The grain and color of the wood is amazing. The lovely blue just fits it perfectly. Beautiful job in bringing out the best in that piece of wood.
Thank you very much!
What a strong organic beauty of a beauty !!!
Well thank you!
Happy for the return of Resin Man! This piece is absolutely stunning!!!! I have never seen wood grained so beautifully. The piece you turned was absolutely perfect for the wood and the epoxy . And blue is my favorite color. All around a fantastic piece and well worth waiting for. Hope all is well.
Resin Man is not exactly a name I intend to live up to, but thanks.
Resin Man only in terms of you being covered in ribbons of resin, not in terms of usage. You do stay true to wood, which is one reason I like your videos so much.
Your videos are so relaxing and enjoyable to watch. Makes me miss the craft. I love the work you do - thank YOU!
Thank you so much!
Hermoso trabajo, muy bien realizado, y con doble mérito, hecho con un tronco viejo, y sin cortar ni un árbol, felicitaciones
Это была песня, вы его вернули с того света и ожививи 😍
Utterly magnificent!!! 😲💖
Thank you!
Now that is absolutely beautiful... well done!!... Thank You Dave!!.. 🙂

Thanks Gordon!
That is an amazing piece. That piece of wood is tremendously beautiful, and then the shape of the piece and color of the resin accentuated the woods natural beauty. True masterpiece!!! Outstanding job!!!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely stunning piece, I love the grain of the wood and the color of the resin really sets the whole piece, Beautiful work
Thank you!
Wow! Incredible craftsmanship, stunning results!
Thank you very much, Nancy!
That is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. My friend made a thumb rest, hand checkered Ironwood grip for my .357. I live in AZ and Ironwood can be hard to work with. Thanks for making it and sharing the video.
I’ve been waiting for another of your projects and it was worthwhile the wait! A great project and captured/presented as always professionally. That wood is hard for sure. Dusty turning work but a beautiful piece as a reward. Well done mate!
Thank you so much!
Amazing. Excellent. Perfect work. God bless you always.
Thank you! Same to you!
This is the first time I've seen an epoxy infused stump become something I would buy. Nice work!
Thank you!
I love it! And that blue is stunning
Thanks!
Wow! What a beautiful piece 😍
Thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous!!! WOW....
Cheers!
