Woodturning ASMR - The Unknown Burl (No Mid Roll Ads)

- I was given this old dry burl and have no clue what tree it is from, but what I do know is its a really cool looking burl, which is all that really matters. I always try and keep burls as large as I can when turning them so with this being the shape of a bowl I thought it had to be a bowl to show it off the best. I finished it with a natural mineral oil ...

Nice of you to do that for everyone without premium
Or the common sense to install Adblock.
Andy, you've got the greatest videos. No gosh awful music, no incessant or unnecessary yakking. An artist with his tools along with his creativity, artistry and care that you put into every piece you do. I love how you take a piece of wood, reimagine it and give it new life. Absolute stunning masterpiece!!
Thanks Chris 👍
I absolutely agree w Chris. When I begin to watch a video and the host keeps yapping I give up. It’s just too much of the wrong kind of noise.
What he said! 👍
@@morgancalvi6675 Nothing wrong with it in the classroom, it's just that the lack of it gives a peaceful air to these videos.
agree 100%!!!
Andy, you treated that burl as a gift, gently and patiently uncovering the beauty of its' inner artwork. Thank you, again.
You mean "its," not "its'."
I’ve turned my friends on to your work. I love that there is no talking, just the sound of the wood meeting it’s future. Peaceful. Relaxing. Beauty. Thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
This is gorgeous. It looks like a wonderful antique someone uncovered from hundreds of years ago! I love it!
BB
No, it doesn't. It looks brand new. Wood doesn't look like that after 100 years. It decays like any other organic material. In fact wood (obviously not a burr) is used in archaeological dating in a process called dendrochronology. Also the varnish on an antique wooden artefact from hundreds of years ago would have a different finish.
I had no idea about the beauty of burls until I saw this video...and WOW, the end result is just stunning (no spoilers as to what it is, for those who haven't yet seen the end). Incredible!
Also, thank you for your kindness in having no mid roll ads!
I love the way you've left all the natural faults and holes in. It would have been so easy to just carve it all away, but this shows the wood in all it's natural beauty! ❤
I love that you didn't attempt to smooth the outer part of the bowl perfectly, the holes really add to the overall look of it .. fantastic 👍
The sound of the gouge removing material, especially the sped-up sound, is mesmerizing. And the appearance of the burled wood at the end - you could spend hours staring at it. Beautiful.
It's so simple, and that's precisely what makes it So Beautiful. Absolutely love it.

Today on “As the Burl Turns”
how much that cereal bowl cost?
The markings on this piece are absolutely beautiful. As a previous commenter has said your videos are a joy to watch. No unnecessary noise, just a master artist at work. Thanks for sharing.
Thankyou
Imagine how many hours it took an American Eastern Woodland Indian to scrape a burl bowl with flint 4 times this big during the Winter inside his bark lodge by the light of his lodge fire.
Love the grain of burl, beautiful turning.
The bowl of a thousand faces. So friggen cool.
Thanks 👍
Imagine turning it for a while and discovering it's actually Burl Ives.
😂
That’d be a heckuva reveal.
Anytime I see your videos, it's my preferred ASMR.😂
I am a big fan of just leaving the gaps open. Refreshingly honest piece. Nice.
Thanks
I like how the imperfections in the bowl give the shape interest and add to its character
Simple yet elegant.
Very nice work 👍 i think I've got one of them unfinished Burls in my yard that looks like its from a cherry tree
Thanks 👍

I love the way you let that beautiful piece of burl speak for itself. Wonderful work.
Thank you
I love watching the grain come alive as the finish goes on. 😊
Great as always, love seeing the grain and shape emerging as it progresses
Gorgeous. I loved the simple elegance of this whole video. The burl was beautiful, the bowl has a great silhouette that takes great technique and shows off the wood. The editing wasn’t distracting. So good. So so good.
Beautiful work of art!!
So lovely just letting the wood speak for itself. I find it very fascinating watching as the steps as you hollow out the inside go from steps down from the rim to steps up in the middle
WOW what a craftsman. That is beautiful. Who would have known what was under there unless you took the time to open it up. Thank you making the video and posting it.🥰
Beautiful! Perfection doesn't need any improvement! I love that you stopped when that point was reached, rather than filling holes/indentations with epoxy to make the bowl 'perfect'. It's perfect as it is!
Thank you so much!
Lovely. Both the process and the finished product.
Well done, and thank you.
looks great, those burls are just amazing...
This highlights the burl beautifully. Marvelous.
Burl's are amazing. Every time I see one I think of you Andy. Long live woodturners
Great Piece Andy. I love that you kept some of the organic look of the burl in the final piece. Beautiful burl all around.
Love how you leave some of the live edges and other natural imperfections. A lesser artist would have turned it down to uniformly smooth burl. Leaving those checks and cracks gives the piece so much more interest and character. And a visual reminder that this exquisite bowl was indeed wrought of a living tree. Well done.
Thankyou
Gorgeous piece,
Dr's should prescribe watching your video's for stress relief Andy. 😊
That burl already has the shape of a bowl nice!
I still love to watch the wood come to life, as you apply finish.
Another stunning beautiful bowl
I love turning burls and this bowl is gorgeous!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! 🥰
I fell asleep just watching the circles… great sleep aid❤❤❤
Love your work, Andy, and the end piece burl bowl is a beauty! I have to say, though, I would have been just as happy if you had stopped at 2:00 in, with the patches of both the bark surface and the exposed light underlying burl. Either way, your work in revealing the beauty of the wood is remarkable!
Thankyou 👍
This is a beautiful piece!
Thank you
You brought out the beauty in that old burl.
This is Live Oak burl in my opinion. Its very beautiful as it appears like plant roots or even brain matter. Have turned many of these myself. Great work
I think its maple
Actually I’m a tree burl expert and if my calculations are correct this is a water chestnut
What a wonderful piece this burl became. I'd love to have one such bowl on my coffee table, or by the entrance door to hold keys.
Wow! That Grain is beautiful!
Elegant in its simplicity. My kind of thing. It's beautiful!

This is an absolutely beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you very much!
As a non-turner I wouldn't know where to start or where to stop. I'd end up with the whole, original burl on my shelf or smoothed out nub. Another great piece.
Such a talented Artist! Inspiring
Thankyou
You manage to amaze me everytime 😮
That 15 minutes went by fast. What a delight to watch.
Glad you liked it

That is a *stunning* piece of wood, whatever it is; some sort of fruitwood, maybe? Whatever; gorgeously simple shape to show it off, and I love the finish-- it reminds me of an old globe of the world.
