You did a great job of trying to unravel the mess that was French politics at the time, and discussing the role Catherine played in it. What a life - the serpent was not necessarily her, it was the whole system she had to survive in.

Interesting conundrum…. Catherine’s oldest son married Mary, Queen of Scots. Had Francis lived to have a son with Mary he would have been heir to both kingdoms. With the power of Catholic France the claim to the English throne could have been enforced and the 3 countries under the same Catholic king world history would be quite different. The Protestant Reformation could have been put down and reduced to a footnote in history.

We all know why Diane was encouraging of Catherine becoming pregnant. Catherine was a cousin and so was most likely to put up with her. Another queen would have thrown her out on her tush
