    am going to try peltier module cooling for my yacht as can pick up mudule kit for around 16 pounds then all you need is insulated box section and put the pelteir in the square hole and can use good size on the cheap

    I use one and have done lots of experiments . I run a DC to DC buck converter and you can reduce power consumption by running it at lower voltage. Eg run 7.5v during day, and 5.5v at night

    Nice one, the fridge did great! its not easy keeping food cold for more than three days or so, we take frozen steak with us and that normally keeps fresh for about four days, then we restock up in a supermarket. Great van btw you done a good job on it :) Tim

      savedpurplecat Thank you, I really enjoyed working on it as Well, lots more planned just need to save up as usual, yeah I freeze milk and things like that as well, it's a good idea and helps a lot, we are of to Italy in the van next month so will have to freeze and visit the supermarket then I suspect..

    12 volt cooler is good for drinks in normal temperature. If it gets too cold out everything in it will freeze. A compressor fridge can be set to a preferred temperature and uses less energy. My 12 volt is great if i don't want to run off batteries. But no one should be using this to keep food in if you are living with it.

      Yeah they do have there limits don't they.. I think they can work well-ish for certain seasons or climates but yeah you wouldn't want to trust them with meat or anything that need a safe storage.

    They have there uses... if you plan to wild camp for more than one day / night chill it down on 240 the night before you head out. Put a couple of ice blocks in and it will last 24hrs.. of course if you have a decent solar system run it for an hour or so... or small camping generator... when parked up

    • @scoellphotography
      @scoellphotography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Sullivan Yeah they do have there uses, we have used ice packs before if taking meat etc, generally speaking our 130amp battery and 120watt solar system will keep it running through the day at approx 20-25 degrees cooler than outside, we mainly use if for drinks and things that arn't so important if they get a little warm..
      Pretty happy with it overall tbh.. thanks for watching fella :)

    on a van as nice as yours I would have saved up and got a compressor fridge. I bought a 12v cool box for my car and I can only have it turned on when the engine is running as it will drain the battery relatively quickly. having said that it works fine for a day trip or weekend away. My guess is the compressor fridge will give you the luxury of proper cold drinks but a cool box will do the job for food and milk.

      @scoellphotography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      phililpb phililpb Yeah it was considered a lot and came down to the fact that, the majority of the time it would be used in the UK and the weather isn't really hot enough, well most of the time anyway, I would have loved one though, when we decided to put something in the space left only really seemed to work with a cool box.. I'm happy with it, I wouldn't trust meat in it for more than 1 night but it will take a drink from 25c down to 5c which is nice and chilled on a hot day..
      But yeah it is a massive drain on the battery,

    The more you insulate around it, the more the heat stays trapped...
    15° is still not safe for food...

    Hi, I'm assuming you wired the extraction fans through the coolbox switch? Computer cooling fans?

  • @barkyclarky
    @barkyclarky 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Have you ever thought about wiring a thermostat to the cooler? This way it can switch off when cool enough then kick back in when it reaches a preset level. Also it would mean the cooler wont be running 24/7. Also seen a video where a halfords cool box didnt rise above 8 degrees when left off all night

    • @scoellphotography
      @scoellphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simon, yeah its a good idea.. i think if we had bigger batteries and solar panels it would be a very good solution.. its something I might try however as I'm sure it would increase the efficiency.. I kinda like the idea of an external temperature gauge as well..
      Ours is very good when its off.. its always the coolest place in the van, even when switched of for weeks. If you have it running all day and switch of at night its often still quite cool in the morning

  • @ChrisEdgecombePhoto

    Sounds noisy. We currently have an absorption fridge and it seems to work well and its silent albeit I doubt you could run it off the battery alone (it needs 240v).

    • @scoellphotography
      @scoellphotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it can be a little over the top, I have a voltage controller now so I can turn it down a bit so it fine to sleep with, I think those fridges do work of 12v, I looked at getting one they seem great it just it would not have fitted in the space

      @@scoellphotography They drain a battery fast too. OK while engine is running or on 240v hookup. I have a stainless steel tray in mine that I fill with ice from supermarkets every three days ( a large bag ), I've kept and eaten steak up to 7 days of storage, same with bacon.
      This was over the middle of summer in England. I initially used two 5lt frozen bottles of water to cool the fridge the night before I started my trip, then I replaced the bottles with two more to really chill the fridge before setting off . I kept one bottle in the fridge ( I needed room for food ) until I replaced with the large bag of ice cubes. Better to buy frozen or cold food/cold drinks but I have chilled canned drinks that were not already chilled, doing this can mean a visit for fresh ice after two days though. I like to bulk buy canned drinks if its warm, so leaving them under the van at night to cool before placing in the fridge the next morning helps.
      Good idea putting the extra insulation in VdubPhotoLife, we work with what we have 👍

    Hi thanks for the vid.. I'm looking to buy the 40litre for a 4 day camping trip.. What would u recommend I buy in the way of battery/ solar panel..? I could have access to charge the battery back up off mains I think. Its forcast hot UK begin of June so bit worried. I need it for food.
    Also ill have it in a tent (separate from sleeping tent... Do u think it will be safe? Do I need to run it all night?
    All help (in simple language :) appreciated

      @scoellphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, sorry for the delay in my reply.. So a cool box will use quite a lot of electricy.
      You can expect it to use about 4 amps of your battery an hour, that means if you have it switched on permantly (which you will want in the summer and in a hot tent) it will flatten a 80amp average car battery in 20 hours, even the biggest batteries will die after around 30 hours..
      To keep it charged from a solar panel you would want something like a 200-250 watt panel and good sun conditions, which would be costly and hard to set up.
      In all honesty it's quite difficult to do, your best bet if to have a battery, with a battery charger connected constantly and plugged into the mains hookup, or another mains point, or purchase a cool box that can be plugged directly into the mains..
      It's possible to keep a cool box running for 5 days, but with just batteries and solar panels it would be very tricky...
      A 3 way fridge might suit you better, or a cool box that can plug into the mains, or even a non electric cool box as long as you can change the ice regularly..

      @@scoellphotography thanks so much for your reply..
      I'm going to buy the electro therm box and a leisure battery as I can charge the battery over night in an entertainment tent.. Yes I hear u on the trickiness of solar and thank u for explaining..
      I'm going to buy a 115ah battery so may get 2 days off it b4 need to charge. The fridge box may be ok overnight off (dep on weather). I haven't charged a leisure battery before and have read must not let run too low or overcharge... Are both these things true? Would you be able to advise how I could keep it all running OK?

    • @scoellphotography
      @scoellphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries, so it's true depending on the leisure battery you should only use 30% for most or 50% for AGM of it's capacity, that's means your 115ah battery would give you 57.5ah to use with an AGM battery before you "should" charge it..
      The cool box should be fine over night if you wanted to put the battery on charge over night..
      Batteries like to be kept charged. So if you only use the battery the odd summer it won't last long I'm afraid..
      Have a look at 3 way fridges they can be picked up second hand for around the £100 mark are portable and they can be run of Gas from a cylinder, so you can just buy the fridge and a camping gas cylinder and it will keep your food cold for the 4 days.. with out having to charge anything
      Have a search on TH-cam or ebay for 3 way fridges, this is an example th-cam.com/video/DpKqXJUgGl0/w-d-xo.html
      Remember though if using the gas you will have to have the fridge in a well ventilated area

    • @scoellphotography
      @scoellphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Overcharging isn't a problem either as a battery charger will ensure it isn't overcharged

      That does seem the rough ball park figure, they are compressor fridges so like a house fridge so they use very little electric and can get to minus -5+ regardless of the outside temperature.. they are also very quiet, but yes they cost a lot..

      I'm using Mobicool compressor fridge at my T5 and it works just perfecly. I was also temping to get "real Waeco", but I just couldn't justify the price to of these, so this is now doing the same job for half the price. I have 95Ah AGM leasure battery in use and this seems to ran Mobicool for 2-3 days when it really hot in the van (Italy durin summer season inside day temps at the car ~30-50C, so it really drains the battery) and at more mild temperatures (basically all 3 seasons at Nordic/Finland) this should run up to 5-6 days with out even starting the car (=alternator which is my only source to change the battery).
      Been using this for ~6 months and haven't found any issues so far. This fidge can be set to -10C...+10C, so this can be also used as Fridge to transport ice cream or other important goods =)

      @@nectarcape Moro, täysin ongelmaton on ollut eikä reilun 100 vrk:n käytön aikana ole muutenkaan ole mennyt mitään ihmeellistä. Kompura pitää käydessään pienen pärinän, mutta eipä tuota yöllä huomaa ja hyvin harvoin se edes käy sen jälkeen kun haluttu lämpötila on saavutettu. Sähkönkulutusta olen nyt seuraillut ja se on noin 150-200Wh per vrk, eli 95Ah akulla tuota käyttää helposti 2-4vrk. Nyt on tosin aurinkopanelikin apuna, joten kaappi pysyy päällä vaikka koko kesän ilman ajoa.
      Ostaisin siis saman uudestaan. 40L versio on aika sopiva 2-3 hlö käyttöön.

      Kalle Honkanen Taidan pistää tilaukseen kun tulee hyvä tarjous eteen. Itsellä 200 Ah:n akku ja 320w aurinkopaneelia katolla. Asennan sen keittiöön tulevaan vetokaappiin. Ylimääräistä uretaanilevyä vielä sen verran jäljellä että saatan tehdä kylmälaukulle vielä jonkun eristetyn upotuksen vetokaappiin. Vähentää entisestään ääntää ja lämpöhäviötä eikä pääse heilumaan. Näin yhdessä tubevideossa että tuulettimen vaihtamalla ”arctic cool” -tietokonetuulettimeen tästä tulee huomattavasti äänettömämpi. Sekin modaus on vielä listalla mahdollisesti.
