    I picked up the CFX3 55 Ice Maker version and the Jackery 500 - did an in home test and it ran for 55 hours at 38F. Figured having that little ice maker might be good for a campfire cocktail.

    I have a CFX3 35, this thing has never been switched off since
    installing it. I do have a solar panel connected to the leisure battery.
    My battery is still fully charged. We don't get a fat lot of sun or
    daylight hours in UK through winter. I'm impressed with it and would
    recommend a dometic CFX3 series to anybody building an overlander.

    So much want! My captain has a pretty cool fridge setup in his 4Runner. He tested his setup with solar panels, goal zero batt and inverter and figured out he could pretty much run the fridge indefinitely as long as there’s sun during the day, which is easy to come by in AZ. Thanks for another cool vid 🤙🏽

    here is why you need a fridge when you are overlanding in sub zero conditions.
    set the fridge to 5 degrees centigrade, it prevents your bottled water, milk, meat, fish and other food you want to eat that day from freezing.
    All other food in sub zero conditions can be kept in a box on the roof rack. it will remain frozen.

    I'm interested in buying the Dometic CFX 55IM, but space is extremely tight in my van buildout where my present cooler sits. I've got the dimensions, and it will just barely fit. Anyway, I think that the depth of the cooler would be extended when you open the lid. So, if you placed it against a wall, could you tell me how much clearance from the back wall you would need to open the lid? In other words, how much extra depth it would add. Thanks.

    Howdy! Question... The Delta 1300 is advertised as an AC inverter. If you have a dometic fridge plugged into the 12V, and the Delta plugged into the car 12V... does the Delta convert DC to AC then back to DC? If yes, wouldn't that be a major inefficiency? Or does it stay in DC like most other portable batteries (such as the Dometic PLB40, Jaclkery, Goal Zero, etc?

    • @LastLineOfDefense
      @LastLineOfDefense  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The DC ports stay DC, the AC is actually an entirely separate switch you have to turn on, so the inverter doesn't even run at all if you're just using DC

    Would you say the cost to ice inconvenience/storage ratio is worth the price?
    To date, my trips have usually been 2-4 days and my group has typically had enough space to carry some extra ice or someone has been able to run to town for a resupply mission. Obviously doing those runs enough times would eventually pay for a fridge, but I figure it would take a long time to equal out.

    • @LastLineOfDefense
      @LastLineOfDefense  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it'd take awhile for you to break even in cost probably - it's more convenience, ease of use, not having melted ice and soggy things. Also the benefits of being able to use it as a freezer in times like now, etc.

    • @stlouisarch2162
      @stlouisarch2162 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An option if you stick with an ice chest, is dry ice. They sell it at Wal-Mart, and one pound (or two if you have a large cooler) will make your ice last four days unless summer in hot areas. I did that for many years, finally broke down and just bought a fridge, but haven't had a chance to use it yet.

    Dometic CFX3 has the distinction as one of the only few fridges out there where one has to physically unplug the DC cable when plugging an AC cable (and vice versa). If you do a review of the fridge you'll probably notice it. Either someone who designed the new CFX3 series did not know what the capability of the prior editions was or it was designed by accountants in china instead of engineers. Perhaps they'll realize this oversight and fix it in CFX4. In the mean time they offer a nice sticker that fixes the issue by warning the user of the problem - a fix probably also cobbled up by the Chinese accountants.

    • @LastLineOfDefense
      @LastLineOfDefense  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh crazy, I guess I've never plugged both cables in at the same time, nor do I see a reason that I would do so?

    • @instagramoverlander5259

      @@LastLineOfDefense Folks do this though at least enough to warrant each and every 12 volt OEM to build this feature in as standard (including dometic with their previous gen fridges). Like when at a camp that has AC power available (and you have both plugged in together so as soon as there is juice in the AC circuit the DC disconnects) or at home if you've set the fridge up with a 12 volt backup power in case of power outage which is how many folks tend to run these fridges during the storm season or when power outages are expected . Dometic thought of this problem as severe enough to start a product recall earlier this summer. One user nearly burnt down his entire rig and had more than $8k in documented damage. Expedition Portal has an account of that, and the lackluster response from Dometic.
