I have been playing for a week and my oculus controller has so much drift, it is like flying with a drunk and suicidal co-pilot. Just doing the menus is a mini-game on a whole other level. I named my drunk non-existent copilot, Carl and my whole family hates him.

Макс Жук if you travel outside of the bubble in the right areas enough, it can just happen by chance. It happened to me early on, but other friends playing didn’t encounter them for ages. You can also just go looking for thargoids and try to find trouble, but that doesn’t guarantee the experience.

My bucket list keeps getting longer each time I play. Some highlights have been finding the Voyager probes (before the newest exploration update), geyser jumping in an SRV, travelling to Colonia and Sag A, and getting my Cutter and Vette.
I would add the guardian beacon and the guardian/thargoid planet sites to this list but my god there was nothing quite like my first time stumbling into a warzone not knowing ANYTHING about them to have TWO cap ships slowly tear into space in glorious surround sound.
The Thargoids really remind of the Shadows and Vorlons from Babylon 5. Now I want the Guardians to come back so that I can watch them duke it out like two uber capital class ships that make even the Farragut and Majestic classes look like Eagles
Driving an SRV into orbit is always fun. There are also some interesting places you can get to driving your SRV up the side of a building (there's little observation decks on the tower... I think you probably need a lift to get the very top one, but the larger one a bit further down can be driven to on a low g world).
I do have to say that my first time in a Thargoid conflict zone in a wing of Anacondas kitted with AX weapons I felt like I was in a war movie complete with shakycam and confusing camera-cuts to random explosions.
Get the Hutton mug, everyone must make the pilgrimage at least once to be a true pilot. Plus there’s the “free Anaconda” waiting, thanks for that time killer... Yamiks! XD
Another thing to try out is PvE piracy as an alternative to mining. The challenge itself is to incapacitate ship without letting it high-wake. Profits are good and the engagement is trivial so "losing" money is not an issue, and it gives you an easy target practice for combat flying.
Try casually landing on a planet, not realizing its insane gravity, and being disintegrated half-way to the center of the galaxy with many millions of data and weeks of gameplay (made me quit the game for good).
One more thing, if you're a filthy rich person, i'd say get an elite joystick pack (forgot what it's called but it almost similiar to the joystick and the throttle stick in the game), get a gaming chair, slap the joystick set on the chair's arm by any means, get a vr set and prepare for the most immersive gameplay
I've got a Thrustmaster T.16000M and throttle (black and orange), very similar to the ones in the game, and a VR-headset. But I'm not filthy rich so no gaming chair yet :) But once you've gone VR in Elite you'll never go back to monitor gaming again, that I can promise.
I have seen plenty of capital ships, but this evening is the first time I fought one. Probably should have done that a way earlier because it was too easy to make it retreat with my fully engineered PvEtte.
I haven’t seen a starrise yet, but I have seen a star set while on a metal rich planet mining gas vents. I can confirm that it’s cinematic. Probably my favorite screenshot I’ve taken in the game.
- Experience a guardian outpost. - Find a moon close to a beautiful gas giant. Find a mountain so that the gas giant is seen close to the horizon from its location. Land at the foot of the mountain on the side opposite to gas giant. Climb the mountain in SRVs with friends to see the magnificent view from the top. Better in VR. - Fly through canyons with FA off.

The shockwave off deep core mining is class. Dare you to be within 500m. Entering an asteroid base is kinda cool too. Lots to do. I’d say the pond is at least a couple of inches deep. They should re-vamp ship damage to make it more fun and unpredictable. How can the power plant run at 100% output on 1% health.... etc.
I'd add this to the list - Get stranded on a planet way out of the bubble and call fuel rats to come pick you up :D Of course I'm not saying do it on purpose :D But when I first started the game I was just having fun exploring and turns out there is a thing called the bubble -of civilization- and I went too far out of it to find a station. I normally play solo but I had heard of fuel rats on youtube. I hopped in to online and called fuel rats. 3 commanders responded, 2 were on their way and 1 was a little closer I guess. They gave me fuel and escorted me to the closest station. I thank them again here not because they saved me that day but because that was one of the most organic and awesome and friendly experiences I've ever had in a game.
Doing my "build something stupid" ship right now. I got a Chieftan and turned it into a missile boat. Still need to engineer it but it's already surprisingly fun with the base model weapons.

Can I recommend something? Go to a planet with powerful geysers, drive over one in an SRV, fly 2km into orbit and see if you survive. Nothing more thrilling!
The BEST time I experienced a Capital ship was when I accidentally shot one of the good guys, while shooting up some pirates who decided to pick on some little ship. Did they send more good guys? Yes but also a capital ship, me in a little ol' ship and when I heard the dreaded sound, I nearly pooped. Actually a little did come out but sitting up and sitting relaxed soon pushed that sucker back in, I really had to get the hell out of there, a quick look behind me confirmed it was warping in so what did I do? Of course, I warped the hell out of there. I love ED but with no VR on the PSVR and NMS getting the VR treatment this summer (for free I might add), it might be a while before I get to play ED again.
i know it's a year late but leaving the galactic plane is on my bucket list for elite. just, being able to look behind me, and see the milky way spiraling behind me. i don't know if it's possible, but if it is.. i want to do it.

Get drunk and see how close you can get to the exclusive zone of Sagittarius A*

My bucket list for players is to find the route directly above Sag A and climb as high as you can go. I reached 1.2k up. The view is INCREDIBLE.
Could also try going low and see if you can get further down, since the view would be pretty much the same
I actually found out that you can get a better view if you do it not directly above the center but about half-way to the center from the bubble.

Can I recommend something? Go to a planet with powerful geysers, drive over one in an SRV, fly 2km into orbit and see if you survive. Nothing more thrilling!
The BEST time I experienced a Capital ship was when I accidentally shot one of the good guys, while shooting up some pirates who decided to pick on some little ship. Did they send more good guys? Yes but also a capital ship, me in a little ol' ship and when I heard the dreaded sound, I nearly pooped. Actually a little did come out but sitting up and sitting relaxed soon pushed that sucker back in, I really had to get the hell out of there, a quick look behind me confirmed it was warping in so what did I do? Of course, I warped the hell out of there. I love ED but with no VR on the PSVR and NMS getting the VR treatment this summer (for free I might add), it might be a while before I get to play ED again.

i know it's a year late but leaving the galactic plane is on my bucket list for elite. just, being able to look behind me, and see the milky way spiraling behind me.
i don't know if it's possible, but if it is.. i want to do it.
I think it takes a day or two of accelerating in supercruise to get there, but it is possible
someone tell frontier to have Digthat as a Radio station DJ inside Elite, I feel like I could listen to that all day.

I don't understand why flight assist off is so hard for people. Just use it for turning your ship, then flip it on again, don't keep it off
