  • Just like we did with the LG CX OLED from 2020, we're testing the LG C1 OLED, its successor, as a PC monitor. We'll show you the individual test results to see if there are any improvements over the CX and help you decide whether you should consider a large OLED TV as a PC monitor.

I wish they can make a smaller version like 40 inches. It's just too big for my desk. I also hope that other manufacturers compete as well. If other brands have 120 Hz OLED panels at a lower price I'd buy one!

To anyone who has never had a PC monitor this large before and is also using their PC for work, I highly suggest that you honestly assess if you have the space to both sit far enough away from ANY monitor larger than 32" and set them up so that their top bezel is near or at eye level.
Not only is neck strain a real thing that will for sure happen if you simply replace your small monitor with a large monitor, the real estate that you gain will be negated by the sheer distance of the corners from your optimal viewing angle. Again, for gaming this may not be an issue, but for work you will notice this all the time. For context, I recently bought the FV43U. And this is just 43". The C1 starts at 48".
So if you also use your PC for work, if you're not sure your workspace can accommodate this TV, go for multiple smaller monitors or a widescreen. I still love my FV43U, but I want to save some of you out there who may be on the verge of making a mistake. The only real reason to get monitors of this size is for the immersive gaming experience. They're not as good as widescreen or multiple monitors for productivity. I promise you that.

I agree! One of the biggest improvements I noticed coming from high end QLEDs…no more blurry VA smearing, or ghosting/inverse ghosting, etc.
It truly is nice to have good/fluid motion, when gaming.
The only downside is the more inherent/perceivable stutter in LFR content. Tbh, it doesn’t even bother me tho. I actually prefer to see the stutter, than see the artifacts and SOE introduced by MCFI. I’m just the type of person who likes the cinematic 24p cadence of films.

    Hi Rtings!
So, a new round of burn in tests would be appreciated.
    What I suggest:
    20/7 'average brightness' setting
    TV1: CNN only
    TV2: Console gaming only
    TV3: HDR Movies with subtitles
    TV4: Fully randomized TV watching
    TV5: PC monitor usage
TV6: An equal mixture of all of the above
TV7: Same as TV6 but with lower brightness setting.
TV8: Same as TV6 but with max brightness setting.
This would be the ultimate burn in test. Featuring real use case scenarios. Of the most recent OLED TVs since the B6 and B7 tests. That are now outdated. Possibly using 48" C1s (minding the 2 panel types of course).
An 'evo' panel C1 could be thrown in as TV 9, featuring the same content as TV 6.

    • @RTINGSdotcom
      @RTINGSdotcom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Hey Lucas! Thanks for the suggestion. We're actively discussing another burn-in test internally, so we will absolutely pass your suggestion on :)

    • @lucascampos5498
      @lucascampos5498 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RTINGSdotcom All right, thanks!
As someone eyeing a 48" C1, and having reasearched as much as I could, on the subject of burn-in, I still feel like I don't have much of an idea of how durable I can expect one to be.
I am decided on this purchase regardless, so new tests from Rtings are really too late for me. But it is clear new tests are needed.
      1. Because the current generation of OLEDs since the B8 has not been tested. Enlarged red pixel, and perhaps other improvements.
      2. Because the methodology of the previous tests from Rtings, could use a move towards more realistic varied content. To really give people a better idea of what to expect out of an OLED these days.
My suggestion, in regards to the TVs and their content aims to separate each main use case into a separate TV.
Stuff I do with TVs / Monitors, (non OLED):
Everything... TV channel surfing; A lot of Globo News on the background with low volume while I do other things, which has red static imagery on par with CNN; Plenty of movie watching with subtitles; Netflix on standby; A lot of gaming, a lot of it the same game. And naturally I want the C1 to be my PC monitor.
And while I know that I should avoid static images and plan to babysit my own TV, and use it on a dark room. I still would like that the test from Rtings feature the things I will avoid, such as:
Using the TV in max brightness, watching CNN style news channels, forgetting Netflix on standby, using icons and taskbar on Windows, and pouring countless hours on the same game with its static hud elements. (War Thunder)
In addition to doing things that are considered ok, and that I will not avoid:
Watching movies in HDR or SDR, always with subtitles, in a very dark room, and watching TV every now and then. (Not CNN)
As such, these are the afforementioned use cases I think should be tested:
      TV1: CNN only.
The good old red pixel killer we know and love. But without the need for a separate TV playing CNN max. brightness this time.
      TV2: Gaming.
Console gaming / PC gaming / HDR gaming, I guess there is not a whole lot of difference.
However I now feel the need for a TV that displays only the same game, with notable static elements. Instead of varied gaming behaviour.
I add another TV then to my suggestion: TV2b. 😬
      TV3: Movies with subtitles.
Should people dread subtitles? Is what this one would aim to find out. Movie viewing will mean HDR, so I guess that is unescapable.
      TV4: Fully randomized TV watching
Turn it on, and change the channel mindlessly and without bias, on a given period of time. Every 5 minutes or so.
Why this content for the test? In theory, a TV displaying varied content should not experience much in the way of burn in. This would put this to the test. Again, like with the Rtings B6 test.
      TV5: PC monitor usage
This test would aim to show the relation between burn-in and desktop usage. Windows taskbar, desktop icons, forgotten open windows, photoshop and similar work, internet browsing, internet shopping, non fullscreen youtube, a not too agressive desktop wallpaper perhaps, etc. The PC equivalent to the CNN test. Run in PC MODE with 4-4-4.
TV6 and beyond, like explained before. A bit of everything, even CNN. With lower and higher brightness on 7 and 8.
TV9 being either a C1 with evo, or downright G1. If deemed needed.
Making it 10 TVs. Which I know is a lot. Anyways, that was only my suggestion, I trust you guys to come up with the best test criteria.

Does it mean that all OLED panels, whatever year have the same issue or maybe the more recent LG panels or some Brand have fixed this with the inhouse setup, please? RTINGS "We received reports of the TV displaying vertical red lines when there are solid areas of yellow and green. This happens when the TV is in 'PC' mode and displaying chroma 4:4:4. Even though putting it out of 'PC' mode to display 4:2:2 helps reduce the issue, it makes text more blurry. We still recommend leaving the TV in 'PC' mode to get clear text, but you may notice these red lines." BTW I've tested it on my 65C8 and it is confirmed. Makes even the text clarity worst and some artifacts in colored logos (yellow, green, red even etc).

I feel like i'm the only one using one of these that's very dissatisfied.
it's such a beautiful panel but i can't enjoy colors with brightness this low, SDR is a nightmare cause of it. not to mention the contant dimming on large white object giving me a headache, it happens so impressively sudden, in order to have nice brightness even in a dark room multiple settings have to be turned on (Which intoduces insane input lag), after writing a document and suddently going into a youtube page the brightness shoots up from 20 to 100 in a fraction of a second. and turning off settings in the Service menu seems to be the only way to fix it.
it's also made game mode so hard to use on things like the PS3 and 360, i'm not nearly impressed enough by the colors to make putting up with brightness like this worth it, it's hard for me to be impressed by them, again, purely cause of the brightness.. I feel like it's such a waste of such a nice panel in these cases.
Especially in game mode i find the brightness so low without any of the settings like dynamic contrast turned on, i mainly do things in SDR. Maybe once every 3 days i'll turn on something that uses HDR, in those cases it looks good. Then again not nearly as mind blowing as everyone claims it is.
Really expected a lot more, all these claims of it being "the best TV for gaming" and all the fancy logos on the box seem to forget that most content isn't HDR.. in the week i've had it it's been constant dissapointment, headaches and menu's. after the initial wow factor wore off.

Damn that sdr brightness is low. Full screen brightness should be at least 220 nits before I would consider using it. I tried using HDR in windows desktop, but I'm not a big fan of that. That stand is also useless on a desk, I would need to invest in a good quality vasa mount. What can be quite expensive. But then again, when buying such expensive tv/monitor I don't want it to be e-waste after 5 years and I don't want to have to babysit the panel. In my country LG doesn’t provide the extra 5 years warranty. If they themselfs don’t trust their products to last why should I?

I’ve been using a 55” C7 for my PC monitor at 4K resolution for the past few years and I have no regrets
😊 definitely you need to sit further away from the screen but it just looks so good!
I don’t see myself going back to a PC monitor except maybe for high refresh rate gaming…😂 but TVs nowadays have 120Hz refresh rate at 4K resolution so that ain’t half bad👍

      @aberkae 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's great too but the ppi is less and you have to sit further if you want it as a pc monitor the 48 inch is better but still some want a slightly smaller one with same specs.

These are a really great price on Amazon right now. Under $800 USD. If you're buying this for media and gaming mostly, burn-in can be avoided. I'd stay away from it if you us it mostly for spread sheets and editing.

I still don't understand to this day why LG doesn't release normal OLED PC monitors in smaller sizes and resolutions, there would be soooo many people desperate to buy them. I would get a 31" 1440p 144-180hz like instantly. As long as it doesn't cost as much as a 4K OLED TV, of course.
