    8-14 weeks : baby stage - comfort, no trauma, build a relationship, potty training, don't worry about a lot of socialization
    14wks - 7mo : nipping stage - more energy and needy, a lot of dog socializing and playing
    7mo - 1yr : pulling out stage - best time to train, tough time to own w/lots energy, jumping, wanna go, excited/worst fear period (brain changing) needs A LOT of exercise and you do more dominant stuff, their brains can process commands and understand more
    1yr - 1.5yr : adult stage - personality is there, aggression can start at this point, they're more serious, keep with training started at 8/9mo age

    This was a great breakdown of age and capability. I was feeling like a failure when my puppy was 7 months old and going nuts, jumping and chewing, snatching everything in reach. He's better now at 10 months. I had that same ambition - like "I'm going to have such a perfectly trained puppy!". The joke was on me. I am a better trained human now.

      Around one year old they are supposed to calm down but people dont really notice that change fully till around a year and two months. Suddenly your dog is sitting and looking at you with full eye contact and you get the feel that yes, we have arrived.

      By 7 months your dog SHOULD be calmed due to REAL dog training down this age stuff is just crap to tell people to make them feel better about their out of control dog. The dog SHOULD be trained by 7 months! Do not let anyone fool you by waiting for the dog to fix itself! and if they cant help you then find another trainer who reccomends training dogs earlier than 7 months!

    I was a bit insecure because I am in puppy school in Germany and my trainer went nuts on me because my four month old Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix could not deliver 10 commands we learned in only two sessions, (they did a surprise test on session three). My dog was able to deliver 7/10 and I was relaxed and proud of her. But my trainer scolded me for this "poor performance".
    I now realized that I definitely won't do the following stages with this school 😅 obviously they have way too high expectations on youngsters and we have 12 weeks old puppies in the same class as well.
    Hearing those development stages explained clearly, what to do when and not to expect too much in the beginning was really helpful. ❤
    Last week the trainer scolding me for being "too resistant", because I wasn't following their perfectionism training and voiced some doubts about "only positive reinforcement" and "upgrading your treats" methods.
    I do a lot with my body language and they don't like that. But my dog understands me better than with teaching her 15 different human words with treats. 😅

    My dog knows what "come" means at 15 weeks. I can be anywhere in the house and yell for the dog and he will come. I can be out in a huge field, he can be running with zoomies, I say come and he comes. He knows "let's go", "leave it", "come", "sit", "down", "find it", etc.
    He even knows what I mean when I say "find (insert persons name)" in reference to my kids. The attention span of this puppy is like something I've never seen. At one year almost to the day, my dog refused to eat his kibbles. It took me weeks to find a food that he didn’t turn away from. It turned out to be raw. But I did try to train him too young. I honestly thought I got a stupid dog because he seemed incapable of learning. And then one day, he got really smart, and I realized I was trying to get a baby to do something his brain was incapable of understanding. I wish I’d seen this video before bringing him home. He’s my first dog and I made so many mistakes with him out of ignorance. I can’t imagine how much stress I put on him in the beginning. However, I did socialize him a lot. @@wymfyf she eventually grew out of it but I still struggle with attention nipping (or really it’s her nibbling for attention) . Our balanced trainer is recommending a ecollar to correct behaviour. I think the land shark thing they grow out of. She doesn’t bite our ankles anymore . She’s almost 2. Balanced training has helped a lot but if we had started early with a balanced trainer I think we wouldn’t have the issue with her painfully nibbling me for attention while relaxing to watch tv. She’s still a work in progress . Not sure about the ecollar option. Sometimes I spray diluted vinegar on myself . She hates that.
      Our dog has tendency to get over excited . But she’s a standard poodle and they are slow to mature. I recommend black kraken k9 dog trainer. It doesn’t matter where you live because they do remote training. She has a PhD in animal behaviour and welfare and also breeds working German shepards .

I thought I was a crappy owner because after two months of training he is still nipping and chewing and pulling on the leash and not listening to half my commands. He's my first dog and I didn't know there were so many stages. • @ozziemom62
    @ozziemom62 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wish more people understood this. I took my puppy to a puppy class starting at 4.5 months and the trainer seemed to really expect a lot out of her. I found it really upsetting because she would just be acting like a normal puppy and the trainer was having me use a choke chain on her until she’d stop trying to get to the other puppies. It didn’t seem natural or right. It would be one thing if my pup understood what the correction was for but she just looked confused and I felt like I was punishing her for trying to play. What puppy should just be expected to sit quietly through an hour long class in a room of puppies!? This video makes me feel validated. And also guilty that I didn’t remove my pup from class like my gut told me to. Why are people expecting 5 month old puppies to be perfectly trained!?!?

    I would love to see more puppy videos on your page, on their own Playlist. This was helpful and I wish I'd seen it 3 months ago. My puppy is now 5 1/2 months and I'm still trying to figure out what's appropriate training for his age every day. We just finished an AKC Star puppy class with a trainer who insisted on corrective collars from day 1, on 4 month olds! And my vet said he needs a prong collar and muzzle because he-my puppy-was scared one time when he went in with an ear infection and was acting bad. He is a really good and friendly puppy with a lot of energy and he is strong, but some of these "professionals", I'm just not happy with. Your training approach seems pretty balanced and appropriate to the individual dog and their age. I believe in correcting bad behavior when it's necessary, just like with my children, but that doesn't mean I need a prong collar or something for a puppy! This has been really frustrating.

    • @monster_mog9328
      @monster_mog9328 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Geez. prong collar for a puppy seems way too excessive. by corrective collar do you mean like shock collar? if so that seems excessive aswell. personally id say muzzle isn't a terrible idea depending on the circumstance. a dog in pain is more likely to attack bc they are scared especially around strangers. but in general i dont think either are necessary for puppies. i personally have my puppy on a harness. I'll use gentle leader for walks but hes tiny so I have stayed away from regular collars to not accidentally hurt his neck. anyways, I wish you luck raising your dog hope all is going well since your comment.

    Jude is hitting 14 weeks and we’ve been watching, he likes your show. I actually stopped trying too train and backed up to just potty training and no teeth on me. I just contacted a puppy playgroup nearby. While we will go to puppy kindergarten at 16 weeks it’s a nice dog training club, I’ve been before. I took my first minpin probably. because I was at the end of my rope. He was so jumpy and there was a Great Dane puppy there. and that dog just rested that big paw on him to make him stop and you of thought mine was being run through the chipper. He straightened up right then. We finished that class, he ate his diploma and we took a few more. He lived 14 and a half years and Ill never have another untrained dog. He was a pleasure. I hope Jude will be too because when he is 14 I will be close to eighty. Thanks for showing us what to do

    I have a phú quoc, or Vietnamese ridgeback. A primal breed. He’s 9mo now and starting to lunge at dogs while on leash. Twice he has pinned down a dog in a dog park. One was on a picnic table being unsocial and the other was entering the park and surrounded by dogs waiting to meet him. He’s intact. He’s def a pack dog and loves wrestling, but now I don’t feel comfortable letting him meet others. He had many friends to play with in Vietnam, but since moving back to USA hasn’t had the chance to play with anyone. His energy is too high for older dogs. I’m happy to know he is still at a trainable age and that I can help him socialize, now I need to find him a trust worthy friend!

    I've noticed with most of my dogs, they follow that timeline you mention pretty much, but you can get after them for biting when they're half grown, and they get it. Chewing on everything, not so much! They will chew, they can't help themselves. This isn't puppy age, but I usually notice a change at 3 years, like a curtain lifts and they reach a deeper understanding of how things work - a new level of maturity. So from 1-3 years is like later teenage and young adulthood for humans. Some of my big dogs don't seem to reach their full physical growth until about 1.5 years. They get a little taller, heavier, and maybe more coordinated. But I have one dog, a small dog, who seemed to be fully grown in body and mind at 6 months!

He chases the cats. I feel like I have so much that I need to teach him and can’t really afford a trainer.
