  • Being laid off in your late 50's is so hard, but there is opportunity after such a negative event if you take control. Here is my story and how I dealt with the aftermath of an unexpected, late-life lay-off.

      L O L yes. It was like the only thing I could control in my life at that particular point in time. Honestly, I just didn’t want to hear how it was them not me, blah blah blah. As I mentioned in the video living in Calgary, we get laid off a lot because the oil and gas industry is like the biggest employer here and those companies get sold a lot so we get laid off a lot. So I’ve been laid off several times, I know the spiel and I wasn’t particularly wanting to hear it again. All I wanted to know was what my payout was going to be.

    Exactly, I was laid off at 50, way too early, from a well paying job in an industry I had come to hate. I went back to school and got another degree that would enable me to do a job that I would like. I could do this because I had gone out of my way to save over the years. So glad i found this. I am 58 and work in tech. I’m confident that next year, likely around May when the next round of mass layoffs come, that i will be let go. In my late 30’s I went through an extremely difficult time after losing 2 people very close to me. This time included a job loss, which really piled on the pressure because i was not at all financially stable. That experience was a time of extreme stress, all of it amplified by my financial situation. This prompted me to make achieving financial independence priority 1, 2 and 3. I achieved FI. So… next year when they lay me off, I’m ready.

Even through I was always welcomed warmly by my former staff and co workwrs I cound not help but feel that guilt. In the end I just decided to just hook up with a few people who had retired a few years earlier than myself and we would do lunch or just do a coffee and that did the trick I got to a place where I did not miss the campus any longer. Same thing here, I had to go straight back to work. find a job right away. I was super lucky in that I was always able to find work almost immediately after I got laid off because of the field of work that I was doing. At that time there were not that many people doing what I was doing so I was in a good position. Not everyone is in that kind of a situation. I guess TH-cam is kind of my version of that although I am looking at it as more of a hobby than anything else. If it ever gets monetized, it’s a bonus in life and more just to prove to myself that I can do it.

    Was let go after I refused a certain medical intervention in 2020... after 10 years of commitment.. unceremoniously.. didn't qualify for EI because the corporation claimed my refusal constituted "with cause" termination. Many companies were given a free card to do this...and have "with cause" on your ROE Record of Employment... disqualifying you for EI....I could then have no reference...No one would hire me at age 54 and at the time because I was unv$$xed there was open discrimination in HR everywhere. This added way more trauma than your average layoff or job termination... I can tell you it was rough...Still trying to recover at 57.. Have had to dip into my Rrsp just to survive. But thank you for the story, and the tips for others who get laid off late in their work lives but before qualifying for retirement ...I agree with you about griecing but also taking control of what you can.

      Linda, it helps to have a basic routine so sleep schedule is steady. And I find lists are magic. I carry index cards with me everywhere and right down ideas as soon as I have them- it’s like your higher self looks for moments to pop in and help.
      I check the list every morning, think of what I can get done, enjoy crossing off, and at night I redo the list. It keeps me from worrying I will forget something.

      I’m not 63 quite yet but getting there. It is harder when you’re older to kind of figure out where you wanna go. I’ve always had a lot of interests so I guess for me retiring earlier than I expected was a good thing because now I have time to actually do things that I’ve been interested in trying for a long time and never had time to do. I have a degree in business and after I got laid off and while I was doing my contract job, I went back to school and took a diploma in nutrition. It was a kind of crazy thing to do that at the time because school took up so much time and I was working full-time, but it was just something new and something different. I don’t really plan to do anything with it, but I’m glad I did it.

Not only that but a referral to a body which meant I could no longer work in my career of 30 years. At 56. And declining health. I don’t know how to come to terms with my story, I feel like my whole life of work was wrongfully discredited. I was a victim of a witch hunt. Luckily I get disability unemployment benefits and have small additional income to try and last me until 60. But it’s not enough to do more than scrape through and means I cant travel or volunteer so I’m feeling pretty useless and that I’m wasting the next 3.5 years waiting until I’m 60 and can get my private pension

    U need to say Melbourne in Florida or Melbourne in Australia because there is a real difference. .....I have the opposite situation where I have a close family member who has a degree in law ( and so, so many other degrees) and after a bad relationship they became a househusband and basic checked out of life that we are trying to get them registered again because they don't even have I.D. like a driver's license coz they started catching the bus......They are not running from the law or anything but just checked out entirely form life and there is some very sought after skills they have that I want them to just get work and help others with the knowledge they have. ......I don't even care if they spend up all the money they earn because one day my ageing mom's house will sell and I will make sure my close family member has a comfortable place to live in their retirement. ......My family was taught to do really well at university and your life will be set but nobody ever taught them when set-backs occur and U can't just check out of life.

    Young people do not stay in jobs year after year any more, so employers saying they do not want to put in the effort for a 56 year old is nonsense. You still have years to go and you already have built up a set of skills.

    • @smallretiredlife
      @smallretiredlife  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, I so totally agree with you, 100%! When you’re older, you have a good deal of experience and knowledge and you know how to do your job quickly. But…. I honestly think they just want to be able to hire someone for less money because, part of the issue is, when you’re with an employer for a long time you’ve had raises and they’re paying you more than they’ll pay that young person coming in. In any case, it worked out really well for me. I’m very happy not having to work now.

    • @smallretiredlife
      @smallretiredlife  14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, I definitely was blessed, but that is the joy of living in Canada. Employers pretty much have to do that. There there are also legislated termination package amounts, but typically employers exceeded those.

    What percentage of a working income would you recommend we have if we want to retire? 100%, 70%, 50% of our current salary?

    • @smallretiredlife
      @smallretiredlife  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Oh my goodness, that is so hard to answer as everyone is different. I am also not a qualified financial advisor so feel completely inadequate to be able to answer. I probably live on 60% of what I made in salary but I used to save a huge amount of my salary so I am completely used to living on this amount. I also have zero debt and I don’t buy a lot so it really depends on each person, the debt load and their spending habits.

    • @smallretiredlife

      Always, always have an emergency fund. They say three months, but nowadays I would say six months. In Canada when you get laid off you typically get some kind of severance.
