A day in my retired life - mini reset and a Christmas recipe
I need a bit of a mini reset after all holiday cheer I have been indulging in and to offset all the excess of more festive days to come. Spend the day with me in my small retired life, eating healthy food and making some sour cherry granola for Christmas giving. The granola recipe is easy and budget friendly and makes a great gift to give to those who have everything else.
Come say hi on Instagram:
smallretiredlife
Granola recipe (set oven to 300F)
1 cup old fashioned oats
1.5 to 2 cups nuts (use your choice of nuts, use raw nuts. I used almonds, pecans, pumpkin seeds, cashews and pistachios)
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 to 1/4 tsp salt
1/4 brown sugar (I used coconut sugar)
1/4 maple syrup or honey
3 tablespoons coconut oil or butter or margarine
1 tsp vanilla
about 1/2 to 3/4 cup dried sour cherries or whatever dried fruit you like
1/2 to 3/4 cups toasted large flake coconut (totally optional)
Mix the oats, nuts, cinnamon and salt in a bowl
Combine sugar, syrup and coconut oil and melt in microwave until oil is liquid, add the vanilla
Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix well. Place on a parchment lined cookie sheet and flatten.
Total bake time is 25 minutes. Bake at 300F for a total of 20 minutes (stir after 10 min, then stir after 10 minutes again) turn the oven off and bake for another 5 minutes. You want the mixture to be fairly dry and the nuts to be toasted so adjust the time as necessary for your oven. Be careful not to burn the granola.
Toast the coconut in a dry frying pan on top of your stove over medium heat. You want it lightly brown. Do not burn it. Let everything cool completely and add the coconut and sour cherries to the granola and mix.

This video, your tips, and your calm voice have made me feel normal!! Apart from the fact that at 66 I’m still working part time, the way I approach my life is so very similar to what you have outlined here. Staying social is my challenge - I know it’s so important but I do enjoy the peace of not having to accommodate people’s moods, issues and constant talking about themselves! (That last one seems to be an epidemic these days!) Just to personalize things I’d love it if you’d share your name with us. Happily a new subscriber, from Australia 🇦🇺 😊

In general I've found companies seek to motivate employees to work harder and longer through means like implying everyone is family and obsessing over company "culture". To survive and thrive, employees either buy into this (until the first layoff) or pretend to believe it's all true. It's just a game / charade. In truth, employees are free agents that need to look out for their own interest and not expect to be "taken care of" like a family member. Just put in a good days work, look for opportunities to grow skill sets and exit gracefully to a new company when your interests no longer align with those of your current employer. Avoid "emotional damage" when work divorces you by keeping colleagues as acquaintances - have friends outside of work. Keep a strong family life.

I like the granola recipe, thank you. Note that what's labeled cinnamon in the supermarket is in fact a relative, cassia. It's nice but I prefer the real Ceylon cinnamon for flavor. It's more expensive than the more easily grown cassia. Personal taste!

    • @smallretiredlife
      @smallretiredlife 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

I agree, the real cinnamon is much tastier! I typically buy my cinnamon at a local spice shop. It’s a little more expensive, but it’s very good quality and it is the Ceylon cinnamon. I can buy it in bulk from them and just get what I need and then I can just refill my containers. I find that way I can buy a little bit less and the flavour stays good.

I got divorced after 26 years of unhappy marriage. Now it's been a few years that I'm single and honestly I'm more calm. Sometimes I miss a hug from a man, but I don't miss anything else. I like my independence, I'm free in my thoughts and actions, I don't need anyone's approval. I've become much more solid and self-confident, and being an artistic soul I live my life far from noise and useless thoughts. I love peace and colors. Thank you for your beautiful videos 🌻❤️🥰

I also feel the way you do. I will be 50 soon but sadly I will not be able to retire anytime soon, I don't even think at 65 (hoping health wise I'll be ok). I have 2 teen boys, I am so exhausted, worked with the public for many years, had to start working at 14, went to school etc. All to say I took a break while raising my kids and getting back into healing work of massage therapy, I just signed a lease for an office. Although I know I'm good at it and enjoy it, the stress of the new technology, having to build a website etc is stressful. Marriage on the rocks, no savings for retiremenr, let alone money set aside for my kids college and university. Life is so expensive now and it's so hard to save. So finding myself in this situation, feeling mad at myself, I will have to hustle big time. All to say that switching to retirement must feel surreal at first but be proud of yourself for getting well prepared for retirement and for building your channel, it's very inspiring, good job.

I have been going through a stressful time, more acutely because of work, but also it is a phase that has gone on for about a year now after the death of a loved one. I am not taking care of myself and disappointed in myself. It can be hard to turn the thinking around to the positive side and I do from time to time but keep falling back… one step forward two steps back. I was just sent some photos from an event I was at last weekend and i am sad when I see how far backwards I have gone. Not sure why I can’t pick myself up and do all the right things but you have motivated me to make a better effort. Thank you
