The song that Billy Joel ranked as his #1 song of his.
Piano Man may have been his most recognizable song by many, but Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is where Billy's musical genius was shown. It wasn't just a song. It was an anthology.
It's about time such a phenomenal song gets its own music video, and what an insanely well-made and fantastic music video it is! Well done to everyone involved in it. Most of all, thank you to Mr. Billy Joel for creating such a musical masterpiece.

Recently had my own "Scene from an Italian Restaurant."
Got back in touch with an old friend. We had not seen each other in over 30 years, since the day we graduated high school. We went to different colleges, my family moved to another city, and he eventually moved out of state. He was back in town to help look after his father; he was recovering from surgery. We decided to meet at an Italian place, about halfway between where we both were. Time had changed how we look some, but not so much we didn't know each other when we saw each other. We talked about everything, anything, and nothing, the way men talk to each other. We parted ways, much like we had all those years ago. I don't think I'll ever see him again, but I also don't think I'll ever stop thinking of him as my friend.

I'm 58 years old, and been a Billy Joel fan my entire life. And I just realized this weekend that this song--which I always thought was just three mini-songs strung together--is actually just different parts of the same story, and are all about the same two people. Brenda and Eddie are the two people meeting in the Italian Restaurant ("they parted as the closest of friends..."), and Eddie is the one who's "got a good job, got a good office, got a new wife..."
My respect for Billy Joel's song-writing and story telling skills--which were already huge--just got a little bigger, if that is even possible...

    Scenes from an Italien restaurant
    Lyrics:
A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rosé instead
We'll get a table near the street
    In our old familiar place
You and I, face to face, mmm
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
    In our Italian restaurant

Things are okay with me these days
Got a good job, got a good office
Got a new wife, got a new life
    And the family's fine
    We lost touch long ago
You lost weight, I did not know
You could ever look so nice
    after so much time
Do you remember those days hanging out at the village green
Engineer boots, leather jackets and tight blue jeans
Drop a dime in the box play the song about
    New Orleans
    Cold beer, hot lights
    My sweet romantic teenage nights

Brenda and Eddie were the popular steadies
And the king and the queen of the prom
Riding around with the car top down and the radio on
    Nobody looked any finer
or was more of a hit at the Parkway Diner
We never knew we could want more than that out of life
Surely Brenda and Eddie would always know how to survive
Brenda and Eddie were still going steady in the summer of '75
When they decided the marriage would be at the end of July
    Everyone said they were crazy
"Brenda you know that you're much too lazy
Eddie could never afford to live that kind of life"
But there we were waving Brenda and Eddie goodbye
Well they got an apartment with deep pile carpet
And a couple of paintings from Sears
A big waterbed that they bought with the bread
they had saved for a couple of years
    They started to fight
    when the money got tight
And they just didn't count on the tears
Well they lived for a while
    in a very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter of course
And they parted the closest of friends
Then the king and the queen went back to the green
But you can never go back there again
Brenda and Eddie had had it already by the summer of '75
From the high to the low to the end of the show
For the rest of their lives
They couldn't go back to the greasers
The best they could do was to pick up the pieces
We always know they would both find a way to get by
That's all I heard about Brenda and Eddie
Can't tell you more 'cause I told you already
And here we are waving Brenda and Eddie goodbye

A bottle of red, a bottle of white
Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight
I'll meet you anytime you want in our Italian restaurant 🌆

Not just scrolling side to side.
Screens are now a bit more wide.

You remember those days being shocked by the color scheme?
Nowadays 2D seems more like a faded dream.
Ah, You’re not impressed unless it has an realistic gleam.
      Shadows, bright flames
      Remember gameplay makes the games
Jumpman was famous as he rescued his dame
By dodging barrels thrown by Donkey Kong.
Then they decided that being a carpenter was simply wrong.
      Shigeru made him a plumber
Some people thought that could not be dumber
And also they named Mario after a landlord.
Oh, But now Mario has the #1 score on the board.
      Oh (repeated)
Their next arcade game wasn’t worthy of shame
Because Luigi was made player 2.
Then they moved on to Pipes, Mushrooms, Flagpoles, and Podoboos.
Had an adventure in Subcon, showed off Toad’s superhuman brawn
Then defeated Tatanga and all of his strange enemies.
Oh, And following that he entered combat overseas.
Well, the Koopalings struck and the kings out of luck
      Until Mario came to assist.
And on Yoshi’s Isle they were equally hostile but Mario had to persist.
Wario conquered at least from what we heard.
      So Mario reclenched his fist.
      Yeah, they’re on a roll!
(Underground Theme Plays along with Normal Theme)
They moved on to 3D and made the game we know
      is just wonderful to replay.
They went in to sports and a few other
sorts of games that gamers still favor today.
A game for Luigi was just too easy.
But why launch the Gamecube that way?
Sunshine with FLUDD was very far from a dud
But was a small slip in the trilogy
Oh, they kept going strong with Yoshi, Donkey Kong, a few RPGs.
Remade a game that was ageless
Super Smash Bros. was all the rage
This was certainly a sturdy time for this super franchise.
Oh, and Galaxy wowed and astounded the masses.
Everyone says that the game really passes
the standards that we have come to adore and admire.
Some pixels of red, ooh some pixels of white
Make the current Super Mushroom sprite
      Nintendo’s come very far
      With their Italian Superstar…

    Interesting bit of trivia:
"After years of speculation about exactly which restaurant inspired the song, Joel stated in an interview included on 2008's The Stranger 30th Anniversary Edition DVD that the song was written about Fontana di Trevi, a restaurant across from Carnegie Hall, which he frequented during a series of June 1977 concerts. The song's signature line: "A bottle of red, a bottle of white, whatever kind of mood you're in tonight" was actually spoken to him by a waiter at Fontana di Trevi while Joel ordered. He has further stated that the restaurant in the story has more than one real-life counterpart; however, Fontana di Trevi was on his mind while he was writing the song.

Billy Joel, a musical shaman, right?
..his art brings forth all the emotions and impacts my brain just as massively as it did when I first came across him back in the mid-eighties.
This song always had an accompanying “self-derived video” in my head..my senses drafted visual counterpoints while traveling into Billy’s lyrics, melodies, vocals, rhythms, stories, but to have a reflection of music and storytelling in visual form from BJ is truly the cherry on top. Thank you for this unexpected gift to enjoy and share. Gratitude!

Yep, couldn't agree more Jennifer. My first encounter was when I was in Canada on holiday, and a relative gave me the newly released Glass Houses (1980) for my birthday. I hadn't heard of him before, but from that moment I was lucky enough to have a fairly extensive back catalogue to discover, and bore witness to his constant re-invention. Which, of course, generated 'self-derived' videos in my young head and heart. His impact on me since then has been constant. Amazing contemporary storyteller who genuinely weaves that magic. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Lovely response..and funny too seeing as I’m laughing at myself once I recognize I’m filling each cell of my old school film running in my mind with instantaneous visions of you in an 80’s setting (jean bottoms tucked and rolled tight, maybe..then there’s the Drakkar cologne that never fails in announcing arrivals and departures ‘cuz the longer shards of teenage hair lightly glazed with Dep Gel swing across the back of your neck pronouncing this 80’s signature scent so ideally..oh and then there’s the Swatch watch and possibly a pair of slip-on Vans or high top Reebok’s with Champion socks and a backpack full of heavy books, erasable pens, a few quarters, maybe even the highly sought after Sony Yellow Walkman with Tom Tom Club or Yaz inside; or something like that, right?) as you’re devouring this newest gift, the gift of music, musicality, manliness, might and magic unlike the other rock stars, unlike other stars, unlike others, the musical manifestations of a virtuoso artist in the making, the one, the only, Mr. Joel, Mr. Billy Joel..the storytelling legend with all the good stuff it takes to endlessly impact his decades of loyal listeners…
Shizzz, I really just wanted to provide you with a generous and genuine response in kind because I really got a kick out of yours…loquacious, yes I’ve been but hopefully the intent will be enough to raise your vibrations as you go about the remainder of your day! I could be really corny and suggest you’re just trying to be a BIG SHOT with your effortless goodness but I would rather keep the corny, ditch the seriously silly suggestion that you’re being pompous (total joke, btw even tho it lacks of any funniness🥴) and lasso this elongated monologue by saying this: agreeing is so damn fun and energizing when unexpected and void of any false contrivance. Yes, loquacious I know…had time to spare while I wait to pick up my son, a college Sophomore studying Vocal Jazz (as in he sings..from a musical family, my dear Glasgow Gallus) and killing it!! Even though he released this song in 1977, just a mere two years after the marriage of the characters in his song in 1975, it was a very forward vision of the future he had to imagine that quite a few years had gone by before their reunion at the restaurant. They married in 75, saved for a couple of years to get a waterbed, living for "a while in a very nice style", then getting divorced. And then at some point Eddie gets a great job, a new wife and a family. I think what makes the song especially immortal is that it could have been any number of years after 1975.. it could even be now, in 2023, that the reunion happens... thus the song seems immortal, nostalgic and applicable to so many who hear it, regardless of time.

The great thing about this song is you can relate to it if you're a teenager to anyone in late adulthood, because we all have first loves from high school, sometimes you marry them, sometimes you don't. And then sometimes the ones who marry divorce, or just break up, and that's heartbreak, but it also talks about second loves, maybe a good follow up song would be love is lovelier the second time around.

@@billyjoel7108 I sure am a big honest fan. Grew up on Long Island, been listening to you since the 70’s. I am 56 now. Thank you for such great music. I love that you included the lyrics in your albums. I was born profoundly deaf and it was easier to to understand and follow the songs. Thank you.

For years i knew Billy Joel only for Piano Man, Vienna and We Didint Star the Fire. I recently thought "why not explore more of his work?". And I'm glad I did. This is a masterpiece

Native new yorker here, 80's baby and grew up with a fondness of Billy Joel. I remember sitting in the basement, getting high and listening to his records. My high school also had an autograph from him on Long island, that we cherished very very much.

What a fantastic video. Nobody can write lyrics like Billy Joel. He is a great writer. I would love a Graphic Novel of this video and song. I have seen Billy twice in Concert. And loved him every time.

Not merely a song, also a masterful piece of storytelling. I almost feel like I knew the characters personally, and even though I've never been to the USA, I feel like I've visited NYC. Many have called this Billy's magnum opus, and I couldn't agree more.

Billy Joel is one of the best artist of the 20. century or maybe even ever. It is really amazing how he catches me with nearly every phrase of music he has written over the past 'few' years. I just really love his music especially his "smaller" albumtracks.

I LOVE this song! 👍 This is one of my favorites in Billy’s songs, Maybe next to New York State of Mind. Great storytelling, good melody, uplifting and Mark’s great saxophone 🎷 Don’t forget that! Very talented, Great musician, humble, funny, he knows how to make fans enjoy his music and at concerts as well. And himself and his band members enjoy also. Go Billy Joel!🎹. I want to see you again at MSG soon!🗽. I love you Billy ♥️and Arigato from Japan! 😎🎶⭐️💕
