I'm a single mom in recovery and every morning I play this song while I'm getting us ready for another day.... gets me pumped up and in the right head space!!!
Single moms are doing the lords work. I’m a stay at home dad and I couldn’t imagine having to do it all my myself. Single moms are braver than the troops.
That's great to hear. I'm proud of you for taking the responsible road and thinking of your kids first. I'm 51 and made the mistake of thinking I could keep living in denial. While my life flew behind me, I missed out on parts of my kids' early years, and I regret it tremendously. We're close now, but I'll never get those days back. Keep it together. It's worth it. Do whatever it takes. Listening to this every morning is a great start to a sober day.
I hope you are still doing well with your recovery. I'd like to hear more about your story. I am not a professional minster, but have a few people I try to encourage and help with their battles.
The line, "I will get by, I will survive," became a mantra of resilience in the Dead community. When Jerry Garcia fell into a diabetic coma in July 1986, it looked like the group could be finished; when he returned to action in December, the group opened with "Touch Of Grey," reassuring fans that they would indeed get by.
Was in a residential treatment center recently. They had karaoke on Saturday nights. Never could get drunk enough to do that on the outside. Did this song. Everyone dug it, had em join in, even the young ones. Thanks Jerry and company. We will get by
@@AJ_Deadshow For sure. At the time I had just broken up with a girlfriend and was moping so bad but the song came out two months later and really did a great job of comfort. Today I wonder why I lost so much sleep over her !!

Don't use and go to meetings. It is about getting passed that. It was for me. I got sober 20 months after I heard the premiere in Landover MD 1982. Just whistle through your teeth and spit.

The song that kept me from committing suicide after I lost my leg in a horrible motorcycle accident. I played that song on my Sony CD player on repeat all day while learning to walk again. It was there that I was informed by a nurse that Jerry died.
A periodic tune that you heard a thousand times. And still somehow finds itself right there when you need it. This is an anthem No matter how tough things can get... keep on keeping on. And everything will be alright
Well said, and totally agreed. It’s a song that has somehow been with me at a few very important moments, or just some very memorable moments … but it’s more than just a song. It’s a little bit magical I think. It has some real power to it.
When I was a kid I always liked this song but thought it was silly. Reading the comments I had no idea how important this song was in helping people through life’s hardships.
I stumbled across this via a comedy podcast I was listening to. I can’t believe it’s taken me 39 years to actually listen to The Grateful Dead. I loved this song and I’ll be listening to them at work today
This comment section is ridiculous. I come here to listen to music and end up reading the rantings of psychotic, mentally ill paranoid lunatics. Thankfully the pot smoking, acid dropping, tie-dye Deadhead hippies helped to reaffirm my faith in humanity. Thank Jerry not everyone has gone completely bat guano.
My absolute favorite song of all time. You can have the worst day in the world life can be falling apart, wife can be taken all your money an feeding your kids a bunch of lies and this song right here just puts you at a ease. I'm a 28-year-old millenial, and I usually like electronic music, but this song put me so at peace that it's become my favorite song. I'm not in a depressive phase, but I deal with suicidal depression, and I suspect this song'll be a companion the next time depression rears its head. "I will get by... I will survive."

I had a friend who was troubled. I showed him this song. He said it was 'actually kinda nice' Years later, he's been uh, missing from Earth lately. Sucks that I couldn't do more to help him. But this song will always remind me of him, of us, of the struggle, and the multiple linings life has to all of its elements. Rest well 'Rinbro', if you see Jerry somewhere down there, give him a holler.
Phil Lesh is what got me into grateful dead almost a year ago now. The bassline in this song is absolutely insane and is nothing like I've heard. It plays in my head endlessly. RIP, thank you legend.
My mom just passed away on Mother’s Day. She was a deadhead and we went to a ton of dead and co shows together. When she was in the hospital we played this and sang it to each other. I wish she was still here. This will forever be our song. I love you mom.
I just had to come here this song again today as I wore my Jerry Garcia t-shirt live from the Fontanne theater. There are certain songs that touch your soul that never get old and always give you chills every time you listen to them! This is one of those inspirational Timeless songs and God bless everybody here that this has helped! Rest in peace Jerry!
The puppeteers really did a great job with the band's stage personalities, from Bobby's head bob to Brent's herky-jerk movements, they really got it right
Love it, when the dog, snags, the bone, and runs off with it in his mouth. Have to laugh, every time, I see it..lol..You are right, about the Puppeteers. What a unique video idea..
My earliest memories are watching MTV in the late '80s/early '90s, and three music videos stand out: "Burning Down the House" by the Talking Heads, "Take On Me" by A-Ha, and "Touch Of Grey" by the Grateful Dead. This song and video holds a very special place in my heart.

LYRICS: Must be getting early Clocks are running late Paint by number morning sky looks so phony Dawn is breaking everywhere Light a candle, curse the glare Draw the curtains, I don't care 'cause it's alright I will get by I will get by I will get by I will survive I see you've got your fist out Say your piece and get out Yes, I get the gist of it, but it's alright Sorry that you feel that way The only thing there is to say Every silver lining's got a touch of grey I will get by I will get by I will get by I will survive It's a lesson to me The Ables and the Bakers and the Cs The ABCs we all must face Try to keep a little grace It's a lesson to me The Deltas and the East and the Freeze The ABCs we all think of To try to win a little love I know the rent is in arrears The dog has not been fed in years It's even worse than it appears, but it's alright Cow is given kerosene Kid can't read at seventeen The words he knows are all obscene, but it's alright I will get by I will get by I will get by I will survive The shoe is on the hand it fits There's really nothing much to it Whistle through your teeth and spit 'cause it's alright Oh, well, a touch of grey, kind of suits you anyway That's was all I had to say, but it's alright I will get by I will get by I will get by I will survive We will get by We will get by We will get by We will survive
Until I just read the lyrics to touch of grey I just didn't know how amazing they were as song writers I fucking love this n I blow all my money on dead memorabilia
My uncle Bobby turned me on to the Grateful Dead at an early age back in the 80's. This was always one of his favorite songs. We lost him last September to COVID. I play this song today in remembrance of him. Most of my music tastes today reflect what he introduced to me when I was young. I love you uncle Bobby, I miss you, and this will forever be our song.

This is one of my favorite dead songs even though in terms of their catalog is more simple structured. The song just helped me a lot during my time getting off heroin, being in the judicial system, tossed around rehab to rehab by court. 8+ years off Heroin and even though life can still be extremely hard and a lot of days I just wanna never leave my home I somehow come back to this song. WE WILL SURVIVE!
Remember calling my hubby while I visited my mother after the birth of our daughter. Honey! the Grateful Dead have a video. Long time Dead fans. Good times they were.
Me too, in 1987. Then I didn't think of them much again until 2001 when I heard Sugar Magnolia for the first time in a bar. Then I became a total Deadhead.
When I am going through tough situations, I don't know why this song starts playing in my head. It feels like a blessing, so I just have to thank Jerry for it. Bless your memory.
True story. Summer of 1971, I drove a van from Phoenix to LA, then took the coast highway to SF. No idea where to go in SF, took an exit off the highway, heard some music, found a parking space, and followed the sound. Free concert on a dock with Jerry Garcia and the dead. What a different world it was way back then.
I miss him every day. I survived, just a different person. May his memory live on for generations. I'll never forget that day.... Ah, Jerry, you left us with so much love, thank you. My last concert was in 1991.... everyone had tears in their eyes when they played this. We didn't know that four years later...bless you, Jerry and the GD, for the music and love.
Since my teen years, this song has been my fighting song! I raised my three children, myself. When things got rough, I told myself, "I will get by!" It served me well! Now, at 68, I am struggling with a bone marrow cancer. And, you know what? "I will survive!" I am so 'Grateful" for the 'Dead'!
Never really cared for Deadheads. But I had a friend who was a huge one. I found out he was murdered today, two days ago, and came to hear his music. This is what he left me. I'm breaking down in tears.
Sorry my guy only good people get murdered it seems to me as ive only known one person to be murdered he was a dead head also in his own way but truly a kind good man at heart hang in there
My dad died today. This morning he was singing this song to me. My cousins' family band across the country put together a cover of this song for him by the afternoon. That was the last thing he heard before finishing (at least here) his long, strange trip.
Miles, I don't know you, but your story really touches me. (Sorry for my English, I'm a French Canadian) Best regards to your father, you and your family. The songs from "The Grateful Dead" are for me to fill the air ... Good luck!
Sending peace and love to Phil’s friends and family. His message of donor support is an inspiration and will save many lives. 🌞 we are GRATEFUL for the uplifting music ☮️ 🎸☮️
My favorite uncle (RIP) wasn’t a fan of the grateful dead but he loved this song when it came out. I was a kid, but always caught me with the sound. This song always reminds me of him. Great memories.
This song always, always finds me exactly when it's needed... As I sit here on a rock smoking the last of my blunt on a bluff, I am looking out at the sky and wouldn't you know the sky is parted with grey and yellow and there is a silver lining right below the grey..... Life is one long, strange trip and it may all be goin to hell in a bucket, but AT LEAST I'M ENJOYING THE RIDE!!! ⚡ WE WILL SURVIVE!!!
My old love introduced me to GD. We had a blast going to concerts. We were late one time and Jerry G looked me in the eyes and smiled. My love moved on, but my love for the GD never died.
I always thought this song was the perfect definition of irony. A song, written and performed by a band who couldn't have cared LESS about "mainstream" popularity or number 1 hits, that gave a bunch of "misfits" an international voice 35+yrs after they started their long strange trip... I'm reminded of how the late Bill Graham described the boy's after the last show at the Winterland Auditorium in SanFran ... "They're not the best at what they do, they're the ONLY ones who do what they do!!" Have a grateful day!!
I believe this was their first chart topper. "Trucking" and "Casey Jones" probably would have, except for a mention of a drug in each song (though both were cautionary, not promotional). "Uncle John's Band" surely would have except for "GD well I declare". I don't know why "Ripple" wasn't a hit.
This is the song that has kept me going single day on my way to work and class. I graduate with my Master’s on Friday even though I didn’t think I’d make it through the semester, but I got by and I survived!

I’ve never been one to see the power of music…until last year. I’m 53, 9 months ago a simple cough turned into a sepsis diagnosis 2 days later. I spent 11 days in ICU, on day 2 the Dr called my family together for the “ talk “. I was given 50/50 chance of surviving the next few days. I was in a relatively small hospital with only 12 ICU beds. In the 11 days I was there, I watched as the other 11 patients died all around me. I went from terrified to a calm peace by day 7. When my family would leave after visiting hours, I would break down crying - after trying to hold it together while my sons visited. I would put my earbuds in & listen to Spotify till I fell asleep. One particular night, this song came on & remembered it from high school. For some reason, I really enjoyed listening to the lyrics …. So I just kept it on repeat over & over. Coincidentally, the following day was when I started to feel at peace. The following few days I slowly began to feel better - until finally on day 11 I was released. I still suffer some issues from the sepsis, but I’m still above ground - & thankful every day I am.
You don't need to be a Deadhead to love this song. Everybody eventually gets a touch of grey.
This is their only song I know, but I love it. I guess I should explore more of their catalog.

Two of my favorites songs, and I am late in learning that.. Timeless
at all times.
I've been there. We are grown now. Beautiful lyrics I got you.
@@dustinz321 you're not late. You are appreciating music. Love you.
Thank You!!!!
Greetings from Argentina. Here we don't even have a clue of what was Grateful Dead. We live in a perpetual crisis. I just listened this song by chance and gave me hope. Even a smile. I began to understand why so many americans love them
Listen to 'Mars Hotel.'
Go buy "Working Man's Dead" or "Aoxomoxoa" immediately. Or just the live stuff on YT.
Need to send some tapes!!!
Argentinina might not know Greatful Dead but at least you all know Ramones😎
@@christopherfreeman1340 yep. Dee Dee even lived in Argentina. Here they filled stadiums
That's pretty cool I'm a 55 year old African-American woman and I've been listening to the grateful Dead and I graduated in 1988🎉 and what a long strange trip it's been❤
Me, too! 53, graduated in 89. My mom said that this our family's anthem...take that as you will!
I disagree. It is illegal for you to listen to this type of music 😤
89 yeah freaks and geeks of all sorts 😮 damn I miss it
Ur a American . The most American band this ever was .great taste in music . ❤
Oh I'm a white South African African American .
If you are not widowed, you are divorced. If you are divorced it is probably because you got bored and are alienating the father.
I am not a professional minster, but have a few people I try to encourage and help with their battles.
i wanna play this song while playing an random halloween indie game on steam
The line, "I will get by, I will survive," became a mantra of resilience in the Dead community. When Jerry Garcia fell into a diabetic coma in July 1986, it looked like the group could be finished; when he returned to action in December, the group opened with "Touch Of Grey," reassuring fans that they would indeed get by.
I remember that. Sadly keyboardist Brent Mydland would pass away three years after this video and song came out.
Jennifer rabbit thank you for helping me get by love you Dad
@@muffs55mercury61 I saw the band with Brent at Autzen right before he passed. Still heavy to think about.

Not just some silly pop song that made the charts. No, a great, important song with a message that we all need. Thank you forever, Dead!
And in this world which seems like it's heading to the rock bottom this song is there to tell us it's not permanent and WE WILL SURVIVE!!
It became so popular BECAUSE we all needed it!
@@AJ_Deadshow For sure. At the time I had just broken up with a girlfriend and was moping so bad but the song came out two months later and really did a great job of comfort. Today I wonder why I lost so much sleep over her !!
It's even worse than it . appears. BUT IT'S ALRIGHT
Truer words have never been spoken... I will get by... Keep on keeping on man
While a teen, I suffered from an anxiety disorder. When this song came out, I truly appreciated its message.
As a recovering addict, this song always meant a lot to me. I would sing it when i was getting high and knew one day I’d survive it. That day was 4 months ago
Hang tough, you can do it.
Thank you!
Hang in there
Thank you! Each day is its own blessing
Don't use and go to meetings. It is about getting passed that. It was for me. I got sober 20 months after I heard the premiere in Landover MD 1982. Just whistle through your teeth and spit.
My dad just passed. And this song reminds me of better days. And that I will survive.
I’m 32 and been hearing this song my whole life but just now really listened to the lyrics and it made me cry. Life hurts bad sometimes but it’s not the end.

True, gotta get your ass kicked once in awhile to really appreciate things. Then you'll look back and just laugh at what you thought were tough times
Sorry that you feel that way 😢 the only thing there is to say every silver linings got a touch of grey.
I love ❤ The Greatful Dead and I am a white supremisist gang member, this goes to my bones. I think Jerry Garcia was and is Awesome, R.I.P but your inspiration helps me stay alive to this day, especially this song. Rock on!!!!❤😊
When life gets you down, I sing this song. I will get by means I will survive and tough it through my situation.
I'm so glad this song has helped so many people get through so many different hardships in life, as it did for me.

A periodic tune that you heard a thousand times. And still somehow finds itself right there when you need it.
This is an anthem
No matter how tough things can get... keep on keeping on.
And everything will be alright
May not be alright per se,...but with ought adventure, triumph and failure,...what is life?
Well said, and totally agreed. It’s a song that has somehow been with me at a few very important moments, or just some very memorable moments … but it’s more than just a song. It’s a little bit magical I think. It has some real power to it.
Lol .. like just now when i looked it up :D .. followed by some Billy Strings
When I was a kid I always liked this song but thought it was silly. Reading the comments I had no idea how important this song was in helping people through life’s hardships.

It's Amazing how things look different with some years in between !
I failed to appreciate it until I was well into adulthood and way more mature- they were great guys who were responsible artist

By far one of the greatest songs ever written. Everything about it is great, and its message is fantastic.
I stumbled across this via a comedy podcast I was listening to. I can’t believe it’s taken me 39 years to actually listen to The Grateful Dead. I loved this song and I’ll be listening to them at work today

The only band I knew that sell out a show by word of mouth.
@Noble Failures, the second part of your name is surprisingly legit.

I'm a 28-year-old millenial, and I usually like electronic music, but this song put me so at peace that it's become my favorite song. Seek God with all your heart, you will find Him. I went through the same 46 years ago, when my Lord and Savior Yeshua/ Jesus reach me from darkness and drugs. With Him you will no only survive, but thrive. He make me a new man.

I had a friend who was troubled. I showed him this song. He said it was 'actually kinda nice'
Years later, he's been uh, missing from Earth lately. Sucks that I couldn't do more to help him. Rest well 'Rinbro', if you see Jerry somewhere down there, give him a holler.

LYRICS:
Must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Paint by number morning sky looks so phony
Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don't care 'cause it's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
I see you've got your fist out
Say your piece and get out
Yes, I get the gist of it, but it's alright
Sorry that you feel that way
The only thing there is to say
Every silver lining's got a touch of grey
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
It's a lesson to me
The Ables and the Bakers and the Cs
The ABCs we all must face
Try to keep a little grace
It's a lesson to me
The Deltas and the East and the Freeze
The ABCs we all think of
To try to win a little love
I know the rent is in arrears
The dog has not been fed in years
It's even worse than it appears, but it's alright
Cow is given kerosene
Kid can't read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene, but it's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
The shoe is on the hand it fits
There's really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit 'cause it's alright
Oh, well, a touch of grey, kind of suits you anyway
That's was all I had to say, but it's alright
I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive
We will get by

Just recently discovered this song and decided to go through more of their work. Safe to say I have fallen in love with this band.
Do you like garlic and onion?
Welcome on the bus. I have been on for over 50 yrs
"They're not the best at what they do, they're the ONLY ones who do what they do!!"
Have a grateful day!!

The power of music is unmatched.
R.I.P. Great Robert Hunter (1941-2019). So grateful for your lyrics.
