I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) It seems like a LOT of people are interested in the Analogue Pocket and FPGA gaming in general....and a LOT of Analogue Pockets are shipping lately...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On the first episode of this new series I will do a full Analogue Pocket setup guide for 2023, a full Analogue Pocket unboxing and give you my review of this FPGA gaming device. If this does well I will extend this into a series!
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghu, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerhold, Adrien Sebbane,
Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Ben Parfitt, Holger Schmidt, Tim Lehner, Shad Uttam, Dan L, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj, Dorfus the Maple Syrup Man, John Booty, Richard S, Eric Gutt and Robert Alger!
Analogue has been making FPGA gaming devices for a while now with an FPGA Super Nintendo, FPGA Sega Genesis and now FPGA Analogue Pocket...but its the Analogue Pocket that seems like the retrogaming hidden gem as who doesn't want portable FPGA gaming!
The Analogue Pocket setup guide should get you started with your new hardware, get all the Analogue Pocket Arcade, console and handheld cores installed and updated and much more! And if you have any questions I am happy to help!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

10/10 quality video. Thorough but also to the point. Thank you so much for putting this together.
Happy to do it. Working on more today. So stay tuned…more Pocket coming
This is the most entertaining, to the point and detailed version of analogue pocket set up i have ever seen. Amazing content.
Glad you liked it! Plenty more guides coming. One this weekend, one next weekend and probably every week after that if they keep doing well
Another whole world of content here for you man. Keep it coming. Love your videos. Thanks!
Aww thanks. I love doing the device series
would love to see more Pocket videos! Interested in knowing if there are any significant differences between the cores when there are more than one option for a platform. keep up the good work.
Thanks. Plenty more pocket videos coming
all killer no filler content! 11/10. thank you.
So glad you enjoyed it. Plenty more coming!
thanks just got mine today! appreciate the help
That’s what I’m here for :)
Congrats, definitely looking forward to more Analog Pocket videos and gameplay. I'm going to place an order once they include the filters in open fpga as well.
Yes getting those filters hopefully soon
Thanks as always. I'm always interested in more, especially since I got my pocket last Friday. Happy Jotego Friday as well. ;)
More will be coming :)
My Analogue Pocket just arrived today! So here I am to rewatch this lovely video. 👍
Nice. Which one did you get?
Super helpful video, thank you!
Glad it was helpful. Lots more coming
Thank you, this was very helpful!
So glad it helped. Plenty more coming!
Awesome tutorial. Simple and straight to the point!
Glad you enjoyed
Ha! Mine arrived on Monday, this is perfect timing
Hence why its running today :) lots of new owners out there. This should help them get set up
More pocket tutorials please, this is a great rundown of the pocket setup
Plenty more coming :)
Such a very useful video!!
Glad you think so :) lots more coming
I love it! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for doing this! I own a pocket and am always looking for new content! I also love your mister content. I’m a new mister owner as well!
Thanks! What I do for MiSTer I’m going to do for Pocket
The dock is amazing 🤩 built-in 2.4ghz receiver is the killer feature IMO. I love my dock as much as the pocket itself. It makes the user experience so incredibly seamless
Yes the Dock is essential IMO. Same for Steam Deck. Just need to have it
I definitely need to get bigger sds and update, seems a lot is happening very quickly. Thanks for keeping us up to date.
Happy to. More Analogue vids coming soon!
Congrats. Have mine since Dez last year. Exactly what I wanted. Waited a year 😂☮️
Haha it took a minute to arrive that’s true
Commenting for interaction. This vid is perfect. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
this was so helpful, would love more videos on unique set ups for analogue pocket
More videos coming :)
You read my mind. I just got mine in after a year and needed a good guide lol
Haha I figured the timing would be great for a lot of people
Please come out with more Pocket videos, focusing on stuff like different cores. I've had a pocket for awhile and wanted to get into FPGA, so good timing. Looking forward to more quality content from you for this system.
More will be coming :)
Great video. I would appreciate more Pocket videos sir. Thank you. 👊🏽💯
Plenty more coming. Weekly!
i just order a yelow one, thanks for this setup guide with mister and this im very happy
Glad you are having fun :)
Small tip: In the system settings options menu you can enable fast loading of memories with ANALOGUE+DOWN ;)
Its funny they call them memories
as someone that grabbed a smoke clear pocket in the latest drop i am BEYOND hyped to get mine in hopefully less than a month
been watching all these videos in preparation
Funny I am working on more videos as I type this. Four more :)
Please do lots of content for the Pocket! Cant wait!
Plenty more coming!
I’ve got a whole series planned
I'd love to see more like this on the analog pocket!
New vid this weekend :)
Been enjoying mine for months now I love the steam deck but it's so huge it's nice to have something smaller, good overview and guide
I do love Steam Deck still
thanks!
👍
I just ordered one today and I am looking forward to this series.
Glow in the dark?
Yes. Got lucky I guess. Hopefully they make more for everyone that wants one.
At least someone got one
Hey VGE congrats got my Pocket today as well it's been 9 months waiting!!
Nice. Glad you got it!
Just got mine, would love more stuff from you
I’m starting work on more tomorrow
I’ve had mine for a number of months now, but I’m happy to see you make this video. Pixel Cherry Ninja is the only person on youtube I know of that makes regular videos on the Pocket, and he does great stuff and a great service, but I’m happy to see the coverage space expand on the topic.
I don’t have the dock yet though, I would like to pick one of those up eventually.
Pixel and I are friends. We chat daily. Some days I think he might be my wife as I talk to him more than I do her lolol
@@VideoGameEsoterica Hahahah that is hilarious. 😂
We plan a lot of stuff together
I just unboxed my Pocket. This was exactly what I needed to get started. Analogue should include a QR code that links to this video in the box. :)
Aww thanks. Appreciate that. I’ve got plenty more tutorials too on the playlist to help you with individual emulators
I've been interested in getting one of these since it was announced, so more videos on it would be great. Might finally sway me
Plenty more coming. Going to be an every week deal
@@VideoGameEsoterica Sounds great!
one of my favorite portables ✨
gotta watch this just to see what new cores have come out 🥹
I’ll be doing videos on all the cores. Setup guides, games to play, controllers to use
So glad you are doing this! Just got my first pocket for the fiance, cant wait for the gitd one to play if it shows up lmao
Happy to do it. New vid this weekend and a video per week planned
I just received mine. Updated to 2.x firmware, loaded a bunch of Cores and ROMS, including the Amiga Core... very amazing system. All my GBA cartridges worked flawlessly and look fantastic. Just waiting for the dock so I can play on the big screen... Good job on the video!
Glad you enjoyed the vid! Enjoy Pocket! A lot more videos coming too
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thank you. The dock has arrived, I pulled out my 8BitDO SN30 pro, hooked it all up, and this is now my go-to retro console on the "big" screen. Not flawless, but, I actually prefer it to my other options.
Yes Pocket def isn’t perfect but it does a lot of things really well
Have a new viewer! Great video had to put it on .75x speed though you move quickly.
Just my cadence :)
Cant wait for the Glow in the Dark!!
I cant wait for filters in OpenFPGA lol
Can't wait for my dock
It really is an essential item IMO
I came for the peel. Not disappointed.
People love the peels
Got mine this week also after just under a year of waiting and I love it so far.
I've just been converting my GB files into .pocket so I can use them with the filters via GB Studio.
Since it arrived on Wednesday I've finished Mario 1 and 2 and loved every second.
It’s been fun so far for sure. So many people getting there’s lately
@@VideoGameEsoterica lots of people getting them == more fun things coming from the community. 👍
Exactly. I am churning out vids. Will have one every week moving forward
Please do a wireless controller episode! Love all your content!
Thanks. I definitely will :)
OMG AMAZING VIDEO! Thank you! I just got a pocket and I was worried it would be complicated to setup, but you’ve made it so easy to understand! One quick question tho: after we update the firmware, do we need to delete that off of the memory card before we add the Pocket updater utility to the memory card?
You can leave it or delete it. Mine is still there
I have hit both like and subscribe and I’m checking back in to make sure it helped out.
I’m rich now. Thank you
@@VideoGameEsoterica No problem!
I didn't know you collect plants VGE. That's awesome. I use to have a garden in the back of my pad growing up and we planted all sorts of seeds and enjoy nature run it's course. 8^)
Anthony..
My wife and I have tons. Too many. But it’s fun
Great video! Last time I looked into it someone told me you had to use cartridges and couldn't load games from the SD card which made it a pass for me. But this makes it quite a bit more appealing.
Yeah that’s how it started but it’s changed a ton since then
Excelente trabalho. Qual a diferente do Pocket Update para o Pocket Sync?
It is a great product
So far I’m quite enjoying it
The difference in hardware capability/compatibility between this and MiSTer builds is something I've been wondering about. Another thing I'm interested in is the Pocket's post processing that mimics the display of certain handhelds. So far, that seems to have patchy support for the openFPGA cores (versus running off a cart).
Yes right now the cart based filters seem to be cart exclusive. I will probably do a video on what Pocket offers vs what MiSTer offers
My OCD was set off watching you poke the top leaving a mark in the box instead of slicing the plastic from the bottom between the box seams lol
Haha that’s why I do that. A little slapstick on camera
Just go mine yesterday and went through this whole setup 😄. Question: does it allow you to use the internal screen when docked? Couldn't get that to work.
I don’t believe so no. I certainly haven’t gotten the screen on
Please more pocket videos:)
I will be doing more
Just got done doing this. Super helpful! Do you know if there is a way to do filters or shaders when doing open fpga? The button combination only seems to work for real cartridges.
Right now shaders are only available for carts and not OpenFPGA. That’s supposedly coming soon
It's interesting to me how the precarious retention of the Pocket in the Dock is similar to the way the cartridges seem very unstable in the slot. I guess Analogue likes to live on the edge or something. I will say I was very concerned about the cartridge retention when I ordered my Pocket, but was pleased to discover that it's not as bad as it looks, though you still have to be somewhat cautious. I really wish they had designed a removable piece that would cover more of the cartridge, though.
Livin on the Edge was a great song. Not so great when it comes to electronics
Great video VGE! For a future video can you go over how to get the CD based cores working? They seem to not work the same as MISTER. Thanks dude!
Def will be doing those :)
Great tutorial. Where do ppl find their roms for diff games? I have a few physical gba myself, but I would love to play stuff like zelda or sonic
That I cant really help with her
I don’t have an analogue pocket and have no interest in buying one. However, I do like learning stuff about devices that are out so please keep this videos coming.
Plenty more coming :)
I would like to see more Analogue Pocket tutorial videos
They are coming. One this weekend and then once a week moving forward
Bomberman music ❤💣
Glad someone noticed :)
Can you do a video specifically on cores and the differences between them?
Working on a whole batch of stuff and I will address differences in cores when more than one exists
Just ordered mine (glow in the dark).... in 8 minutes or less they have flown away!!! 😂😂😂
Haha not surprised. I don’t need two 🤣
Please do controller compatibility, appreciate your videos
It’s on the list
Nice vid. Have you tried save states on any carts? I received my pocket this week and the sleep/wake function barely works (almost always just resets the cart on wake) and only about 5% of save states load successfully. Frustrating as otherwise it really is a beautiful system!
I haven't tried on physical cart, just on OpenFPGA. I will give it a shot on carts
@VideoGameEsoterica thanks! Appears to be a lot of chatter about this issue.
I’ll look into it. Does sound frustrating
I got mine a few days ago (smoke), and I also had difficulty with the glue, only to realize it’s open at the other side. It’s an actual pouch, not an envelope.
Haha been fooling a lot of us it seems
4:08 I made the same mistake. The other end is open--you were undoing a permanently glued flap 😉 Actually, I didn't rip it all the way open. As soon as I could tell something was wrong, I checked the other end and noticed it was not sealed. Doh!
Hahaha now you tell me
I’m having issues with Neo geo if you can make a tutorial for that specific core that would be awesome
Lol stop looking over my shoulder. I’ve already uploaded it. Just haven’t aired it yet
I got the device since day one, as much as I love it the lack of updates from analogue is a real huge problem, they promised so much and failed to deliver. Anyway you ll have good time with yours.
I try to focus on the positive but yes I do get that sentiment
since you aren't using the cartridge slot i highly recommend a 3d printed GBA style dust cover, if you're interested in seeing what it looks like i can post a link to a picture otherwise i won't
By all means post a link :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica looks like my comment with the link got removed, maybe you can still read it or do something about it lol
Haha I’ll google it. YT loves to do that
@@VideoGameEsoterica i'll join your discord and @ you it there
I saw!
Nice one!
How about adding beta cores for the Pocket, such as Jotego's Patreon Beta cores?
I may show that in the future but that’s a limited audience as I have no clue how many people are Jotego members
At least one right here 😊
Ok no prob, when I receive my Pocket later this week or early next week, I will definitely investigate and will write back here (replying to this message) how Ive done it.
Sounds good! Thanks 👍
I wish the start and select were raised or if you can at least map the other face buttons or the L and R to start because soft resetting on pokemon (A+B+ST+SL)on this isn't fast, I prefer to do it with just my right hand or without having to change my grip
Yes they are pretty flush
i want one. cant really enjoy playing the handheld mister cores on the tv , tbh. i need the handheld experience!
Funny because I love GBA on my tv
Could you connect the AP to the tv without the dock, do you reckon?
I’d have to tear it down and see. Some of the hardware is in the Dock. But if that can be worked around is the question
can the pocket use bluetooth controllers while docked? i wonder if my 8 bit do controllers would work or atleast plugged in via USB. following the tutorial now to install some cores.
Bluetooth works when docked. You need the dock to pair
how can I transfer over save states from an older sd card onto a new one that I just set up and placed into my ap?
Should just be able to copy the files across from their location to the new card
Great video. Please make a tutorial video for the dock. Can’t pair my 8Bitdo N30 2.4g controller. Don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Please help
This weekend that video goes live so stay tuned. Whole controller video
@@VideoGameEsoterica will do. Can’t wait. Thank you
👍
Im struggling to get the Pocket Updater software to run correctly - it just errors out very quickly once you hit “update all”z my mac is still on Os 10.12 Sierra, might that be too old?
I haven’t tested it on Mac at all so I’m not sure on that one. Sounds like too old of an OS though vs what’s out now
I wanna see the input latency with bluetooth controlers
Controllers this weekend video
YES wireless controllers please! thanks
That’s next. This weekend :)
Hi, if you are not downloading roms, how big of an SD card would you recommend?
If you aren’t adding files to OpenFPGA and just using the cart slot honestly the smallest size they sell is more than ample
Thanks for the quick reply! @@VideoGameEsoterica
👍
You don’t need to do the manual firmware update if you’re running the auto updater. It’ll grab that too
True but for the people who watch and don’t use OpenFPGA I’ll know they got that fresh firmware :) it’s kind of a “do X then Y. But if you don’t do Y I’ll know you did X”
@@VideoGameEsoterica ah got ya. I just finished the video. You might want to add that you need to run the auto updater a second time if you want pce cd games to work. It creates the file structure that’s needed
I’m going to do an episode dedicated just to PCE CD so I can do it start to finish. I know that core can be a bit fiddley
A friend of mine has one.
I have to settle for an Abernic handheld
I’ve heard those are decent
@@VideoGameEsoterica they do upto GameCube and PSP it's just a matter of finding the right one. Some are weaker some are power houses, some have HDMI out some don't. If I can jack my arcade stick into one we're good to go
Interesting. Dunno if I’d grab one since I have a Deck but fun sounding
Steam Decks are Chonky boys. Sometimes you want something that fits in your pocket or a small carry on.
I hope they release a Gameboy Advance/Game Gear/Lynx form factor at some point.
An OG GBA form factor would be awesome
I'm able to reach till the point of installing the firmware on the Micro SD but I have no idea where to find the roms
Does any work
I have old ones of the SNES but they are like 8 years old are they compatible and if not where should I go ?
That I can’t help you with per rules here
Would like to see Sega Saturn core running some presently supported games
Saturn core isn’t for Pocket though?
The FPGA in the Pocket isn't big enough for Saturn.
Def not. Or PS1
Are there docked scanline settings yet?
Apparently not. At least not on OpenFPGA. Filters are still apparently just on the cart based implementation
So I’m a bit confused, are the cores just roms of games you can play? Or are the roms in the arcade section and the cores just enhancements? I am completely new to all of this
The cores are the code that becomes the hardware. It’s either verilog or VHDL. The core is what amounts to the original hardware just in a descriptive language that programs the FPGA to BECOME that hardware.
Think of it like this. Sega Genesis. The CORE is the console. The rom is the cartridge
@@VideoGameEsoterica ahhhh okay that actually makes sense thank you so much for such a fast response YOURE amazing
👍 that’s what I’m here for
Did you like the D-Pad? I found it terrible to play fighting games and to use diagonals properly.
I find it wholly "serviceable". Its not amazing, but in a small form factor handheld...can it ever be?
Just was trying to get the glow in the dark one… of course they sold out before I could even get my captcha done lol. Hope they make even regular ones soon, seems cool but I’m not buying one on eBay.
Scalpers. Probably all went to bots. They will all end up on eBay sadly
@@VideoGameEsoterica I need to find some of their tools so I can buy my own stuff =\
I’m trying to get an NSO N64 controller right now. Always out of stock, eBay always has tons for double the price. Scalping kills the fun
i do not see the website link in the description for pocket updater utility
Here you go : github.com/mattpannella/pocket-updater-utility
Might be a dumb question .. but where can I get the actual ROMs for the snes games?
It’s not a dumb question but it is one I can’t answer here
How many Logic units on the Analogue Pocket FPGA?
49k per the spec sheet
1. Is there a way to just select the cores you want?
2. Is there a way to rip my gameboy carts and saves using the analogue pocket?
Yes you can go in and install them manually. And no on part 2 that I’m aware of
@@VideoGameEsoterica thank you!
👍
Does the charging dongle have to be usb c to usb c?
Not as long as the dongle you use to charge carries the appropriate voltage and amperage
Can you plug in the dock? I can't get to update or even just show on the tv :-/ Maybe I did something wrong.
Plug in the dock? Like are you not getting power?
@@VideoGameEsoterica there is green light on the dock but no picture on the tv
No that should be it. If the Pocket is on the Dock correctly and the HDMI cord is properly seated you should get signal. Check both ends of the HDMI cord / try a diff HDMI port / try a diff HDMI cable. If none of that works it might be time to contact analogue support
@@VideoGameEsoterica okay, thanks
👍
i must be missing something, once i download the program and hit 0, it corrupts my SD card, and i have to format it every time.
That’s really odd. Def not what you’d expect
How Can I Get NBA JAM ON THE Analogue Pocket and Emulator altogether
Sorry not sure what you are asking?
