I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) It seems like a LOT of people are interested in the Analogue Pocket and FPGA gaming in general....and a LOT of Analogue Pockets are shipping lately...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On the first episode of this new series I will do a full Analogue Pocket controller setup guide for 2023, talking about what controllers work, which ones dont, how to pair controllers to your Analogue Pocket Dock...and a lot more! Because bluetooth controllers on Analogue Pocket and 2.4Ghz wireless controllers on Analogue Pocket take a bit of setting up!

Analogue has been making FPGA gaming devices for a while now with an FPGA Super Nintendo, FPGA Sega Genesis and now FPGA Analogue Pocket...but its the Analogue Pocket that seems like the retrogaming hidden gem as who doesn't want portable FPGA gaming!

I went to this video twice to be able to pair my 8BitDo PCE controller. Finally figured out that the dongle was not required to pair, which finally got it to work. Thank you for the firmware directions, I appreciate it.

They are. Bit weird you have to swap back and forth on firmwares. Hopefully those get combined eventually
What’s everyone’s experience with original wired controllers? Any adaptors that work for OEM NES/SNES/Genesis/TG-16/Saturn controllers?

I don't have an Analogue Pocket but I'm interested in the controllers as my 8BitDo Neo Geo CD controller arrived yesterday. I am beyond happy with it! Interested to hear about that M30 I see in the thumbnail.
You need a diff dongle for the Neo Geo CD controller but once you have that it works great
Oh it's a RetroBit Saturn controller, I thought it was an 8BitDo M30. I bet that will pair with the Pocket.
Yes that pairs. Retrobit was a no go
I can get the controllers to pair but the analogue thumb sticks don’t work, only the d pad works. Is this normal and expected with the pocket? Ta

Xbox Series X and the PS5 controller. The only controller I can get the analogue sticks to work on is the 8bitdo Lite 2. Thanks for getting back ❤

I bought the M30 2.4g which says it's compatible. I tried to update it by following the instructions in the firmware but the controller refuses to go into pairing mode. 😥
Hmm. I’d try contacting 8BitDo. Might be defective?
@@VideoGameEsoterica I figured it out. The instructions were wrong on top of that the included usb cable only worked for charging.
Charging only cables should be banned. I hate them lol

I’ve been playing with the 8bitdo m30 and found it laggy over Bluetooth. USB works just fine though.

If you want an Arcade stick I recommend buying a modern one like a Victrix or qanba, even the 8bitdo. The built in firmware is for modern console, which we know works on the dock. Also if you just want to mod the sticks you own buying a Brook UFB (Universal Fight Board) is a great selection, Compatibility with PS4, PS3, Switch, Wii U (only pokken), and a bunch of retro consoles remakes that use USB controllers, its also very feature rich, they also sell an updated PS5 compatible board for an addition 20 dollars. Brook also sells USB converters but they only work for 1 console specifically. Alternatively for much cheaper you can buy a brook board that is just compatible with Switch/PS3 im sure will work with the dock those usually go for around 25 USD.
I have my own custom stick for arcade boards. Full custom enclosure build. I just need to build a new P2 stick. Also all these work over DB15 ports and at least my superguns don’t allow for USB
Thanks for the video! Here's a bit of additional experience I've had with the dock:
1) My newest controller is the 8bitdo "ultimate bluetooth controller" which works great with the dock when connected with the included USB 2.4 dongle or its base via USB (which acts as a passthrough). It can be configured to work with the analog stick instead of the d-pad (or both at the same time) if needed.
2) The Wii U Pro controller works great. No analog stick support as of yet though.
3) The 8bitdo arcade stick works great too. Even though I'm just a noob when it comes to arcade sticks, I think it plays great and I've heard good things about it. Can be customized pretty easily I think.
4) The Retro-bit 2.4g Sega Saturn controller works with the dock if used with its USB dongle.
5) I successfully updated and connected old discontinued 8bitdo controllers to the dock, an SN30 and a FC30 Pro. Both work great too.
Weirdly my Wii U Pro controller was sacrificed to the arcade board mod gods. Ive yet to try the 8BitDo arcade stick but I might buy one for modding purposes
Can you explain how you connected the sn30 2.4 wireless controller? I've tried everything and can't get it to work
Go here and click on “manual” for the SN 30 and follow those directions. If that doesn’t work might be an issue with your hardware : support.8bitdo.com/analogue/Dock/
The problem I'm having is that when I connect the controller to the pc it doesn't pop up like a discoverable USB would. Any help would be appreciated!

does the dock allow you to play with one cartridge or rom ? on lets say shining soul 2 ? Like just two controllers and boom ready to play?
Yes you can hook up multiple controllers
I can say my 8bitdo pro 2 and my stadia via Bluetooth work Really Well via Bluetooth as well.

Any update on the NG ASP? I couldn’t get it to work even with the adapter they came with. Not really sure how or why, lol.

@@VideoGameEsoterica ok I’m not alone. I love the pocket and especially like being able to have same saves at home and on the go. But the MISTER has infinitely better controller compatibility. Hope it acts as a guide for analogue development for sure.

I've got the original 8bitdo NES30. I was really hoping to use this with the Pocket Dock, but the best I can do is connected...but no DPad. Anyone else got this to work?

The NeoGeo CD pad controller does work with the dock without the dongle. I wired it first then it’s recognized by the dock.
Must have been added in recent updates

Has anyone had issues mapping the buttons for 2nd player ? I can do 1st player in the options but it doesnt let me change for the 2nd player.

The Retrobit Sega Saturn controller 2.4ghz does in fact work. It's been my only controller thus far I've been using on the dock.
I wonder if there are differences in firmware in the productions runs. I am looking into it

I tried the wired HORI Real Arcade Pro.V HAYABUSA for Nintendo Switch. Did work in PC mode but not in Switch mode.

Just tried the 1.2 update. Now works in Switch mode.@@VideoGameEsoterica Edit: However, the home button doesn't work in switch mode, so I can't exit out of games.
I wanted to use the SN30 for my dock, but after finally figuring out that I need to change my firmware to the dock compatible one I realized it's not ideal as I have no way to bring up the Pocket OS menu from the controller which means I need to get up and restart my pocket to start another game. Might go for the SN30 Pro next since it does have a dedicated home button
Yes it feels a tiny bit haphazard right now with the mixing of firmware

Great vid. Would you say an official ps4 controller is preferable to the 8bitdo pro 2? I'll just be using either one for analogue pocket, with adapters, playing lynx, pce, Gameboy and neo geo pocket games on the Analogue Pocket snd dock, , and playing Session and SkaterXL on Pc laptop...
PS4 is great if you have it. Both are good options and you really can’t go wrong with either
Brilliant, that's good to know. I decided upon the 8bitdo Pro 2, partly because I prefer the simpler lines of its retro-tinged aesthetic, and It'll sit nicely with my 8bitdo Arcade Stick. I'm also really curious to try an alternative peripheral manufacturer, and see how it compares to my experience with the traditional PS1,2&3, and Xbox 360 pads I've had in years past.

8BitDo is very nice stuff. They get very close to the quality level feel wise of an OEM console controller

I'm having an issue connecting my Xbox Series controller to my dock. I've updated my Pocket and Dock, as well as both Xbox controllers using my xbox. I held the sync button for 10 seconds till it vibrated twice, signifying that it is desynced, but still it hangs in my controller sync screen on the dock. I had no issue syncing my Switch Pro controller as well as my 8bitdo arcade stick (using the 2.4gz dongle). I tried syncing my xbox controller in the controller sync screen as well as in the main menu without any other controller connected, pressing the sync button on the dock. Still no dice, with both Xbox controllers i tried this with. Still no dice. I feel like i tried everything, but is the something I'm missing?
Take the batteries out, let it sit for a sec and reinsert. I’ve had this issue on my USB dongle for Windows. See if that works
@@VideoGameEsoterica oh wow, that worked. I actually already tried that earlier, but must have put the batteries back in to quickly. I also unplugged my dock and left that unplugged for like 30 seconds like the controller, which was longer than i did before. Not sure what part of it fixed it, but doing it longer than like 10 seconds is probably what helped. Thanks.
It’s the Xbox controller. I dunno why that happens but it’s something I’ve seen enough to know to do that first. Glad it worked :)
I got my Mayflash Arcade Stick F300 Elite working with the Analogue Dock yesterday! :) You need to set it to X-Input, and X/Y.
The tricky part it the Home/Analogue button. It doesn't map to the arcade stick's home button. You need to hold the stick in the south west direction (down and back) then push the Select button. Then you can access the menu to adjust core settings, map buttons, load roms, etc.
I hope this helps anyone else trying to get their arcade stick working.
Analogue really needs to streamline the entire controller process and expand on what works. It’s too limited
So true. I though I was going to have to buy a new 8Bitdo arcade stick just to get it to work properly with the dock. Thankfully I got my F300 fully working. Now, I just need to figure out how to map buttons on player 2. I can only pull up the menu on Player 1 controllers. So frustrating...

Ahh yeah not a ton is supported by the dock so most things just will be a no go unfortunately
As for pairing ps5 controller with the dock, make sure your ps5 is not grabbing it first during the pair. You may want to unplug the PS5 and test
Tried. Still nothing. I read a few reports of others having issues as well. Like I said it could be a PS5 controller firmware issue so I cant 100% point to the Dock as the issue

I managed to get it working. How? It just worked randomly. So I have no real clue. Firmware was up to date on both devices. Then one day it just paired

No. All too expensive. You need Logitech
I cheated and got the DualSense controller to work by using and 8bitdo brick2. (my controller was updated on PC when I wanted to play uncharted legacy with it)
(there was an update for the brick2 a couple days ago to support the NGCD BT mode) (been mainly using the brick2 on the mister with my n64 nso switch br controller lately)
as for arcade stick, I tend to use a brook ufb, then wiring up a 6 button DB15 port to the brook ufb pcb via the screw terminals.
right now I'm building a wireless stick (with a hori tekken 6 wireless 360 shell) with an m30 2.4g pcb and a brook wireless fighting board (ps4/switch) (and a DB15 port)
will use a brook xb2 for 360 shmuping ^^
I read other reports of people having issues with Dualsense so it seems to be not working as intended. I’ll try this

@@VideoGameEsoterica I think they tested the dock with the dualsense controller with a "day1" fw and called it a day but newer fw changed things.
(just to be clearer, just like you my controller doesn't work directly with the dock)
same thing happened with the xbone controller firmware got updated, it broke compatibility with a lot of stuff.
@@VideoGameEsoterica I also modded a couple madcatz alpha stick with wireless pcbs, quite the small formfactor and also perfect coupled with 1536p ipad3 panels for mister and such, to make a compact arcade station when having a small gaming gathering at home ^^
