Other than that, great analysis
Thanks for this. Someone else pointed out the substance bit, but I had no clue Megumi was a girls name. That disregard from the start is such a Toji thing to do. So happy you pointed that out
I was happy in the culling games when Toji still got brought up throughout the series. Also how Naoya Zenin recognised when he was young that Toji was the strongest member in the Zenin clan
my favourite part of naoya vs maki was the panel where naoya said the one who belonged up there with toji and gojo was him as he clocked maki shi was tuff as hell despite coming from a bum
Man, I always knew Toji was a layered character, but your really dove deep into that. The parallel to Buddha and Son Wukong is sick. Also just how traumatised Gojo was because of Toji. Like, I knew that that's why he went the whole length of perfecting his defensive limitless and he also destroyed the inverted spear of heaven precisely because of that, but now he also uses his limitless while walking to not leave any tracks behind? My man literally decided to never touch grass again, and it's all because of some self-proclaimed over-powered monkey. Needless to say, I subscribed. Keep cooking
She doing what he could not? I am pretty sure that it was mentioned that Zenin clan still exist only because Toji didnt care to kill them, not because he would not be able to.... O ther than that lovely video.
Part of it was Toji also was emotionally broken to the point he didn’t have any pride in himself due to decades of abuse by the Zenin clan. The tragedy was that he only started taking pride and initiative was immediately after Geto. He had just fallen the two strongest Sorc’s, there was literally nothing Toji could not do. He probably would’ve walked directly to Megami and stiffed his clan on the heir, but Gojo rocked up and for once in his life Toji took pride in himself, and immediately failed. Maki meanwhile was able to distance herself from the Zenin thanks to Gojo and had time to flourish, despite their interference. Plus she had a sister that she very much loved. Those two things, particularly losing the latter to her father caused her to behave in a completely different way. Responding with focused resolution and retribution rather than becoming detached and apathetic.
I immediately think of Rock Lee when I think of "now power among power" characters. No jutsu, no talent, no powers. Not even physical gifts. He was even less than Toji along with Might Guy and Might Dai. All he could do was train physically. Same as Kenichi in History's Strongest Disciple. 0 talent, 200% effort. Lee's only true ability is even a weakness as it leaves him vulnerable and damaged afterwards.
4:28 Regarding this, another point of view is that instead of willingly abstaining, Toji's body is simply so physically strong/idealized that things such as alcohol and drugs simply don't work on him
I'm glad you brought up Maki. I mean you cant analyze Toji without her, duh. But I think my fave Maki moment is when Toji snatches her weapen and we really see her think "Who is this grown man and how is he stronger than me?" She is so used to her physical strength being unmatched, even by adult men. That's her thing. That's her gift. And this unknown ghost in someone elses shell really shook her world for a moment. I found that interesting (and hilarious)
One thing I like is that you notice the way gojo fights after their fight. He doesn't rely on blue as much and fights mostly hand to hand against all his opponents.
Excellent video analysis. Toji is exactly how I want my villains to be written: cold and calculating, badass, and complex but all beneath the surface. His almost simple demeanor at face value is meant to fool the audience as much as those in the story. Brilliant character who owns every scene I can't praise him enough.
Toji wasn’t that bad of a guy. I remember him driving 3 hours to come help me fix my porch.. completely out of his way, but he still helped me. Didn’t expect to be paid either (which is unlike him). Solid guy
Toji forever impacted Gojo and the entirety of the story of JJK. Simply a GOATED character. The fact that he bested, traumatized, and influenced a change in Gojo puts him at the absolute PEAK when it comes to JJK characters. Great video my guy!
a really fascinating part of his character is that from a meta perspective if the Zen'in Clan and Jujutsu Society had just treated him fairly, recognized his strength, and gave him Playful Cloud, he could have saved so many sorcerers from dying to random curses on missions. He wouldn't have been able to be everywhere all the time, but someone like him could have aided immensely in the effort to reduce curse fatalities. Or he could have tried like, football or something and left japan entirely, is he stupid?
I think the best takeaway from Toji is "I won't go where im not wanted." Unlike, other would be protagonist. Constantly fighting for themselves to sit at a table, no one wanted them in the first place. Proving others (especially himself) that im not a failure/burden that he can carry the weight. Just to do one thing and we're family now. Glossing over the X amount of years bullying and berating, they had to endure. Toji turns that and says, "F you, F that pray I don't cone or I will slaughter the lot of you."
You lost me when you said Toji was broke…dude was just 30,000,000 Yen IN ADVANCE to do this one job! That wasn’t even full payment! Honestly he doesn’t even need money!
@@gallenberger1 😂 He was called the “sorcerer killer”! You think this is the first time he was offered money like this? Didn’t he sell Megumi for 10,000,000 yen? But yes! Hard to spend when dead! ☠️
@@Deadset767 Toji says himself that he’s broke and it’s because he’s a degenerate and a gambler. Toji owed every cent of that jobs payment before Toji got it
Fantastic analysis A cooler way to look at Megumi’s naming is that the opposite of a curse is a blessing and Toji actually had disdain for curses and cursed energy users. Him having Megumi may have been a way to say that Megumi is the exact opposite of what he hates: a Blessing
agree... aside of him just being hot he also is a very interesting charackter as you mentioned together with the end scen in front of megumi was just another lvl
This is a truly fascinating video. You're very rapid-fire and move on from points quickly, but all of your thoughts are fully formed and it doesn't feel like you leave anything hanging. Your editing keeps admirable pace with these rapid-fire observations and somehow avoids feeling samey even though we're working with a limited amount of footage for this character. If I had one criticism it would be that I don't think you really expanded on the whole "Toji is the villain anime needs right now" premise, as you didn't really cover how other villains are lacking besides "a lot of side villains aren't very developed" and "Toji is a deconstruction of a popular trope". And while those are both strong points, the fact that most of this video is just character analysis within the context of JJK specifically makes it feel like you're wrestling unevenly with these two video topics. Of course, this criticism is so minor that if it weren't for the misleading title I wouldn't even have been thinking about it as I wrote this comment. All in all, very impressive stuff, and I think I'm going to stick around!
@@rebeccaliar9873 Thank you for the kind words! You made it sound much more technical than I could 🤣 also see what you're saying in exploring his necessity, and I agree I could've handled that one better

I never really thought about Toji's pride. I did not really think he had any. This video solidifies Toji as best character OAT GOOATTTT 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🐐🐐🐐💯💯💯
That's awesome that it made you see him in a new light! Another great character I covered recently is Pain if you're interested in more. There's also a Sukuna one for more JJK.
@@gallenberger1 Yeah the moment I saw him almost teleporting around Gojo's Infinity like how Lee did the same to Gaara's sand shield, it became clear to me. And both have to make up for their obvious shortcomings.
4:47 Honestly, it might be a lot harder, but I could still see toji taking down Gojo anyway after his awakening if he played it smarter than he did. He would probably have to set up a strategy like before
also don't forget about another connection between gojo and geto's relationships with toji. geto had a downward spiral after meeting toji and when toji dies geto inherited Toji's curse. gojo awakened because of toji and inherited Toji's "blessing" megumi
I think the many of jjks characters have similar depth of characterization. I think the ability to kill off characters when they excess their narrative allowd for geje to tell a very tight story while also exploring a variety of themes related to power.
Now, I feel the fact that Gojo wore Toji's outfit in his final battle also overshadows the Toji's loss (like Toji lost to Gojo, Gojo lost to Sukuna). And no doubt about Toji being the villain needed in this era. His character is one of the impactful side characters in any story.
I just realized who Toji reminds me of: Morgott from Elden Ring. Both from honored bloodlines, both feel rejected by society for various reasons, and yet, are still loyal to that social order despite being despised by it. Morgott's curse from birth is not unlike Toji, whose condition is also a circumstance of birth, and both characters turn out to be in different ways the best of their respective societies; Morgott as a king, Toji as an apex assassin.
The only thing on the sun wukong comparison is that sun is a celestial ape outside of the standard classification of living beings and cosmically naturally overpowered to the level of absurdity, which kind of weakens the comparison thematically
Spoilers from the manga: I think this also works wonder for when Maki finally decides to kill her clan rather then lead it, in a way the viewer knows and she knows that the issue its this ingrained world view of sorcerers all around that spawned Someone like Toji and her, all people in the Ze´nin clan were guilty at some point, and rather then being the bigger person she choose to be the bigger sorcerer and end it
You can tell me what you want but Gege actually did a good job with his characters. Every detail matter. He put thoughts into them and turns them into real people with ‚normal‘ proplems. This story could actually happen in real life if sorcerer existed. It’s just so complex and well put together
4:04 No, it's not "looking this in different ways" His son himself is a blessing (as every son should be), and *_is_*_ blessed_ ; You could add more, But in This case It's those two things; it's just 1 way
I really love the reference to Uzumaki when Geto used Uzumaki, and Mahito looked just like Mr Sato when he spiraled himself to death. There are so many references in this anime to the classics. Mutliple Hunter x Hunter refrences especially in the way Yuhi fights specifically. He fights almost exactly like Gon, uses a technique that isn't considered good, but does so in an unorthodox way making knowing about it meaningless and in fact possibly a bigger liability. The way he holds his hand like Gon in Jajaken : Rock, and his entire combat style is based off Gons moves from the anime, his tendency to use obstacles and environmental hazards as weapons and ways to shift around the battle field, overahelming thw opponent with rapid flurries etc. i really love how much Yuji is modeled after Gon.
@gallenberger1 Truthfully I could go on for hours if you wanted, about all the references in Jujutsu Kaisen to other manga. Like Mechamaru's Ultimate Mechamaru - Mode: Absolute's Pigeon Viola attack is a reference to industry mech animator legend Ichirō Itano, specifically to the animation attack style lovingly refered to as the Itano Circus. Kokichi Muta is actually somewhat modeled after a young version of Itano himself, and the fact he uses a Mech to fight is only more evident of the reference. Truthfully I only wish we could have seen more of Ultimate Mechamaru - Mode: Absolute specifically because I could watch him use Pigeon Viola all day tbh. The Itano Circus is one of my favorite attack type animations. But I could do very easily go on for quite a while yet of more references, especially some very obscure ones you almost need industry insider knowledge to catch like Sotokan and Junpeis relationship being based on an actual spurned Mangaka that went mad after his partner was involved in some gang violence by coincidence - thinking it was a colleague who had made an unfortunate comment the night before it happened - and he blamed his colleague thinking they ordered the attack on her, and he poisoned the entire staff nearly killing quite a few. I need to stop now or I'll keep going.
Great video, but if I had to provide constructive criticism it would be to elaborate on plot / power scaling elements a bit further in the future. As someone who is familiar with (and who has read) JJK, I understood everything you were talking about and really enjoyed the video. However, if someone was less familiar and wanted to just watch a relatively short video essay on a cool anime villain, they would lack some context for the plot or specifically power scaling. Example: when you referred to Gojo as the the most blessed character, born with both the Six Eyes and Limitless -- that sounds cool, but what the hell does that mean / entail to someone who has never seen JJK? From context clues they could theorize okay, they're a strong cool power in this universe, but what about Geto? So what he managed to nearly kill Geto? Is Geto crazy strong or something? How? Again, super nitpicky, but that would be my only criticism to potentially extend the appeal for an otherwise great video essay.
@@GoodKid Thanks for the constructive criticism! That's definitely something I need to be more mindful of going forward, and having that pointed out genuinely helps
What about Stain? His power was basically useless, and his own ability to push the change he wanted was none. Yet through his own will and determination, he became a greater threat and influence on the world than his quirk ever could. Toji isn't as deep or special as you say honestly. Nothing is new under the sun. And my memory isn't perfect. But when people mention stuff and characters like this. The more you explain it. The more it knacks in the back of my mind "I've seen this before, but where?". It's like my dad and any trope. You see it now, I say it was done in the 80s. He says: No that's from the 20s taken from a theatrical show in the 19th century based on a movement dating to the early 19th century as a reaction to an early incident in the 18th century. Take any stunt, trick, modern show or visual gag and my dad just points out: They took that from Buster Keaton. The people in kaisen, and many other shows, are really, really freaking dumb and needs a reality check. Toji has a restriction and is chastised. So he manages to kill a bunch of curse users, they don't figure out it was merely one loss for another gain with his restrictions. Or that talent and gifts mean nothing. And then. Gojo is born and they praise his gifts. But when he becomes too gifted, suddenly they turn against him. Make up your god damn minds! Either praise absolute power to no end or shut up.
Its probably reading between the lines but 2 of the only heavenly restricted characters were both from the zenin clan, they were probably a necessity in the ritual to tame maho, for it is near impossible for a ten shadows user to do that alone, theres also that thing which megumi did before summoning maho, to include someone else in the ritual. That could be a heavenly restriction user ( it could be someone else as well with one shot capabilities like gojo but since the clans didn't get along all that well if they had to do it with just Zenin members then thatd be the way to do it ig
Saw someone else comment this on a similar video so sorry for copying but I like Toji’s gambling addiction with the touch that Toji’s bets miss, implying he is always betting on the underdog. Born into a world of sorcerers without powers, probably who he’s always been betting on, and he probably gets an extra rush when the “monkey” beats the favorite. Awesome vid!
Hey bro nice video I really enjoyed it. Some honest constructuve criticism: be careful with inflections on the end of your sentences! I hear you often ending your sentences with an upwards inflection. Example: "meaning that his lack of cursed energy has actually made body physically superior than other's?" It makes you seem unsure of your statements, like you are second guessing yourself. So if you want to improve your videos even more than they already have, be sure to make it a habit to end your sentences with downwards inflections. This will make your communication seem more assertive and confident. Nice video bro 👍
Without Toji we wouldn't have Megumi. Does that mean people with heavenly restrictions can help give birth to exceptional curse users? If so, what would've happened if Mechamaru survived & had kids? Or better yet, if Maki has kids, is she giving birth to another shadow user or something similar?🤔
I really like this character, or should I say concept as well. It’s a modern, better version of Lee. The only thing I don’t understand is why can’t the guy just be a normal curse hunter / killer? Does he REALLY have to be the sorcerer killer?
Damn it, I knew I forgot an example to use (Lee). I think him being the sorcerer killer plays into him feeling the need to prove his worth because they are gifted and he isn't.
Him being a Sorcerer Killer plays into the trauma from his time in the Zenin clan, and his unending hatred towards those who are ''gifted'' with Jujutsu.
i’ll say it again: the fact that his body managed to kill a special grade disaster curse by just functioning off of INSTINCT is enough for him to be a fucking threat
Maybe Toji symbolizes/is Daemon/the devil/hate and the thing around his body is the snake/envy. This imagery is used quite often. For example, Harry Potter: Voldemort and Nagini
I always thought Lelouch from Code Geass was one of the best "villains" in anime that I've seen, since he to some degree is the very definition of a good villain as in he was and frankly is the world hero it's just that the world to move on needs a villain and someone to blame so he decides to take that role on for himself. Of course there are other iconic villains as well.
He was important...for powering Gojo up. Yeah...so "powerless" that was able to "kill" a God. Also...can we all already stop pretending that even a single soul cared about Riko!? But I liked how he left the chopsticks in that position...it was a clear foreshadowing at his death. 12:00 Well...that was his last gamble.
There’s also a interesting discussion to be had about Buddhism, after his wife dies Toji quite literally stops having any care for material possessions. He gambles cause it’s fun and he kills cause it lets him eat. He barely has pride and hides anything that could make him special for not only his job but his own technical enlightenment. That all changes at the Toji vs Gojo battle, Gojo cheats death and then proceeds to become enlightened himself. This spurs an actual response from Toji and in a sense unelightens him. He starts caring about Gojo and his own pride which directly causes his death. Toji dies with no regrets but trusts the only other enlightened individual with his son’s fate. (Bro got mad lucky getting Gojo to help megumi)
I always related to Toji tbh. I have also been abused to the point of hating myself because i was different, so i used my low self-esteem as motivation for improving myself and not caring what others think.
Toji is a better character than Gojo. The only reason Gojo survived Toji was some deus ex machina BS because Gojo needed to be in the story. #TojiCouldBeatSukuna

She doing what he could not? I am pretty sure that it was mentioned that Zenin clan still exist only because Toji didnt care to kill them, not because he would not be able to.... O ther than that lovely video.
@FiveStaring I was referring to the path they walked, not their strength. Under the same conditions, she wasn't warped into a killer for hire
Hot take Toji is basically might Gai if he was evil (I think him forgetting names is a reference to him at least)
That's a fascinating thought. I like it a lot!
And if he was hot
I immediately think of Rock Lee when I think of "now power among power" characters.
No jutsu, no talent, no powers. Not even physical gifts. He was even less than Toji along with Might Guy and Might Dai.
All he could do was train physically. Same as Kenichi in History's Strongest Disciple. 0 talent, 200% effort.
Lee's only true ability is even a weakness as it leaves him vulnerable and damaged afterwards.
4:28 Regarding this, another point of view is that instead of willingly abstaining, Toji's body is simply so physically strong/idealized that things such as alcohol and drugs simply don't work on him
@@ma-08bigzam78 Yep, in fact that's probably the case

I'm glad you brought up Maki. I mean you cant analyze Toji without her, duh. But I think my fave Maki moment is when Toji snatches her weapen and we really see her think "Who is this grown man and how is he stronger than me?" @@Potential94 Great comment! Thanks for watching. Toji is that dude
a really fascinating part of his character is that from a meta perspective if the Zen'in Clan and Jujutsu Society had just treated him fairly, recognized his strength, and gave him Playful Cloud, he could have saved so many sorcerers from dying to random curses on missions. He wouldn't have been able to be everywhere all the time, but someone like him could have aided immensely in the effort to reduce curse fatalities. Or he could have tried like, football or something and left japan entirely, is he stupid?
It is no joke how good the Hidden Inventory arc is, probably my favorite arc in all of anime.
@@Wraithling It only gets better as you dig deeper too
I think the best takeaway from Toji is "I won't go where im not wanted." Unlike, other would be protagonist.

A cooler way to look at Megumi’s naming is that the opposite of a curse is a blessing and Toji actually had disdain for curses and cursed energy users. Him having Megumi may have been a way to say that Megumi is the exact opposite of what he hates: a Blessing

💯
@TheClarity101 Yeah, it's mostly about the pride aspect
Spoilers from the manga:
I think this also works wonder for when Maki finally decides to kill her clan rather then lead it, in a way the viewer knows and she knows that the issue its this ingrained world view of sorcerers all around that spawned Someone like Toji and her, all people in the Ze´nin clan were guilty at some point, and rather then being the bigger person she choose to be the bigger sorcerer and end it
You can tell me what you want but Gege actually did a good job with his characters. Every detail matter. He put thoughts into them and turns them into real people with ‚normal‘ proplems. This story could actually happen in real life if sorcerer existed. It’s just so complex and well put together

@@BigPanda096 Wow, there's a lot I missed

@magnusm4 Wait a few weeks and you'll get a Stain vid 😎
Toji vs Gojo was the peak anime moment of last year for me, so I like this video.
Works for me
Its probably reading between the lines but 2 of the only heavenly restricted characters were both from the zenin clan, they were probably a necessity in the ritual to tame maho, for it is near impossible for a ten shadows user to do that alone, theres also that thing which megumi did before summoning maho, to include someone else in the ritual. That could be a heavenly restriction user ( it could be someone else as well with one shot capabilities like gojo but since the clans didn't get along all that well if they had to do it with just Zenin members then thatd be the way to do it ig
On the contrary Maki actually fullfills Toji's wish of becoming superior and whipping out the Zenin Clan.

Hey bro nice video I really enjoyed it.
Some honest constructuve criticism: be careful with inflections on the end of your sentences! I hear you often ending your sentences with an upwards inflection.
Example: "meaning that his lack of cursed energy has actually made body physically superior than other's?"
It makes you seem unsure of your statements, like you are second guessing yourself. So if you want to improve your videos even more than they already have, be sure to make it a habit to end your sentences with downwards inflections. This will make your communication seem more assertive and confident.
Nice video bro 👍
@@ollelikesmusic6038 Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. It's not something I'd ever thought about so it's nice to have pointed out
Without Toji we wouldn't have Megumi.
