    I have been saving all your ALONE musings and videos for a special day. Well, I guess that is today. LOL. Honestly I think a lot of us feel we know you guys (or you) better now, than last summer when the show wrapped etc. That is when I actually STARTED into all this BushCraft as you know. I can say for a FACT, watching a skilled woodsman like yourself lose that vital firesteel on that beach friggin traummed me, but --- TAUGHT me a lesson, and likely a million other people.
    It traummed me and my heart sank for you bro. I have not told you this yet. I knew it was over for you in that wet place if you could not find it, I could not believe it was gone, I felt sick to my stomach. Honestly. I am not going to say I am glad you lost it in order to teach a million people a valuable lesson about not losing stuff, setting it down, or keeping it attached to our body or another device or bright orange paracord on stuff etc..... but if that was someone, not on a show, no sat phone to make the call with or a plane or chopper coming to get them IRL...... that person may have died. That is the lesson I think that was scared into me, and also because you are a CANADIAN like Wayne --- I really wanted to see you guys go far. The secondary lesson for everyone -- is that if a skilled guy like you has that happen to them.... Imagine the %/chance the rest of us mortals have of doing it and really getting screwed LOL.
    I wanted to share my thoughts at the right time, and honestly, if that is the reason this happened, one skilled guy has something happen to them.... so a million more really learn a life lesson, then Joe, your appearance on the show, is well, well worth it - and I hope you know I am sincere and you have peace with it, it could haunt someone - but the lessons for many others - you helped clearly teach and that is also a victory for the greater good, in my mind. Most sincerely BD

Your sharing of knowledge is good for so many of us, I believe this whole experience has made you stronger. I think everyone incl. your family benefits from that. But $500k woulda been nice also lol. Blessings

    First, major props to all the guy who took place in the challenge, The History Channel and the show producers for putting a show like this on the air. I really enjoyed the first episode and can't wait to see the rest.
    Joe, I have been watching your videos for a while now mainly to learn about new parks and places to visit here in Ontario. Along the way I have learned a lot from you and it has helped me make some major changes to my kit. I am, or was, a traditional canoe camper but I have started looking deeper into the bushcraft skills you focus on and can't wait to start practicing. Good luck on the show, thanks for all the inspiration.

    Just finished watching episode 2 and I would like to say not only to you but the other 9 contestants, to even attempt this took courage, it's not a normal part of the human condition to deliberately put yourself at risk. I'm thinking the steel did you in. If I was in that situation, I'd be spending a lot of time on my knees literally praying to find in in the pebbles - it's probably within 10 feet circle! Man, I hope you end up finding it. I did a 5 day solo this spring and it was all mental, I also have a young kid and this weighed on my mind more than anything. Having a kid and wife back home is the real game - a huge disadvantage in this sort of thing.

    Loved the logic of why you chose the items you did. Never thought about gill nets before. Rock solid tip. Many thanks for sharing that! On the subject of "trolls and haters": I love responding to them using the kindest words I can dredge from the gray matter. Its very disarming, but sends a clear message that anyone following the comments can pick up on. Always a kind word, that's my mantra. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience.

    Thanks Joe for taking the time to share your thoughts on this great video! Surprisingly enough, I wasn't aware you were on the 'ALONE' series until this video (I'm a little behind on watching the series...), but it makes sense since I like ALL your other videos and your common sense attitude toward survival/outdoor life. Again, thanks for taking the time to make this video and sharing your ideas! Safe bushcrafting/survival/hiking/camping and outdoor life to you and yours ALWAYS!

    Great Items! I would have had similar stuff for sure! Even Dick Proenneke didn't Shoot big game very often. He said it was just to much for one man. IMO you had the right idea the sea has been feeding people for generations. If you want to learn to clean big game its a fairly easy task to learn. Thanks for sharing Joe!

    Joe, I greatly admire you for just attempting the "Alone" show. Most of the guys and gals I know that claim to be outdoor people are anything but. I was a wetlands and wildlife biologist for many, many years, and spent 12-14 hours a day tromping through the woods and wetlands. Saw a LOT of interesting things along the way, and learned a lot. Not sure how long I would last now, as I am 71. Still love backpack camping, with minimalist equipment - just cannot haul more than about 20 lb.
    So - you done good! Abysmal environment, for sure. Congrats to you!

  • @Wintertrekker
    @Wintertrekker 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Thanks for sharing this Joe! Its interesting to hear your thoughts about your axe, and that you chose to bring that over a saw (when tools and number of items were limited). I was taught growing up as a kid when I was sent to a really old-school kids canoeing and woodcraft Camp for 7 summers, axemanship starting when I was 11 years old where I was first using an axe full time, 2 1/2 pound head, 26-28 inch handles. This was THE woodsman's (and woods-Kids) tool. The Camp did not allow us to use saws - never. On all our canoe trips us kids used axes, and all our woodcraft training in main camp between canoe trips we used axes. This was true of many Camps back in the day. On canoe trips we made fires for every breakfast and dinner, no matter how much rain, otherwise we did not eat (and we always manged to get'r done by cutting large diameter dry and splitting out the dry wood). The modern outdoor magazines and gear store employees slag and criticize the axe, promote the saw, say axes are not safe, etc. But when trained well for skills and safety, the axes can serve the bushman in all forested environments. If I had to chose only one tool between axe and saw, I would chose axe every time. Obviously I bring both on my winter and summer trips when there are no limitation rules, because saws are very nice to use. But if rules are put in place for limited tools, I think you made the right choice to choose the axe, and a good sized axe (2.5 lb, 26 inch handle) that can do just about everything. Looking forward to the rest of the Alone series!

    • @josephallen19
      @josephallen19  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wintertrekker Thanks, man. Yes, I completely agree, and know your love for the axe!

    • @NothingCoherent
      @NothingCoherent 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wintertrekker Agree with your comments! The axe is the tool of the woodsman, and unbeatable in skilled hands.
      People often say the knife is the most important tool. I scoff at that. Without my axe, I'd be frozen and dead on a mountain somewhere, several times over. Having a belt knife doesn't change that, at least not where I live.

    • @MotesTV
      @MotesTV 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the car door has springs, glass, lever arms, and metal sheet, I'm sure a little study could reconfigure a car door into a highly effective small game trap.

    • @SpectrumSurvivalist
      @SpectrumSurvivalist 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is more than that too it as well, don't forget the wiring, and maybe even bearings. You could make all kinds of things with a car door, or you could just use the whole thing as a great door to your shelter that if it is a manual door, you could even roll down the window in. If you had a metal saw, you could saw arrow heads out of it and everything. You could make any number of things out of a car door.

  • @WizzRacing
    @WizzRacing 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Damn Joe, I can't believe you lost that flint and steel. You got me all worked up. Then it ends there. I'm hopping you found it as you will suffer some discomfort for that mistake.
    I'm also noticing a pattern here. The people that had zero experience with nature and wildlife. tapped out inside two days! That goes to show people that have skill and physical strength aren't enough. As they had all that and still failed before the body was even close to breaking down. They broke mentally and it cost them.
    I love that bear conversation you had as well. Then you moved over to his side. Shows real composer and mental control. As the bear and wildlife will lead you to water. As they need it too. Just paying attention to them is a skill set.
    Great Stuff

      Peakbaggers For Cancer I was just thinking the same. Undoubtedly he has to be _very_ careful what he says. My guess is he finds it. Maybe a lesson for later participants in this show is to paint everything possible in bright colours.
      It's early days, but it _appears_ the mental challenges are greater for some than others. Two have left due to concerns about predation. Both would typically be loaded to the brim with firearms. Is it possible that being stripped of their guns was their undoing? Of course, it may be that they had more abundant predators around them.

      Just as an aside I spent a year up on the north island in 1970-71. I got there from Kingston on Nov 20 and it was pouring and it was still pouring on June 20th. We never really dried out, our boots rotted away. The Radar Sqn took building a trail to Cape Scott for the BC joining confederation Centennial project. Every week 10 servicemen from the base would head out into the woods to work on clearing the bush trail. At first we were all excited but after 10 times out there constantly soaked and exhausted it became less and less 'fun'. I hate salmon berry to this day. We didn't have the cool modern camping gear like today so it was horrendous. Thankfully there were 10 of us to share the 'adventure' most of us became really excellent life long friends on the way. You are doing just great.

    Being from Vancouver Island myself, I wouldn't be caught dead out there trying what you were doing without wool & Gore-Tex everything with plenty of spares.
    Smart food strategy, by the way. I would have prepared the same way.

      lol. Chances of being attacked by an animal in the woods are exceedingly small. Bear spray would be more than enough. Chances of being attacked in town are extremely small as well unless you live in a very bad area. Even then, chances are pretty low.

      Dallas Van Winkle Tell that to the guy that got attack by the bear he sprayed with bear spray here recently. And if the animals are not bothering me then im never gonna shoot them hahahahah its not like im walking up to a bear with my gun out and telling him to charge me so i can shoot him......to each his own but when people come in and say chances are low....makes them sound like a dummy. I wish i had the powers to see into the future like some people....or could read animals minds to know what they are gonna do. Man your talented. Wild animals are so friendly....

      I have camped and done bushcraft for most of my life.As a Canadian,I laugh at Americans with their bags packed with guns and ammo and their cold weather survival tips LOL
      You guys don't know the cold and don't know how to do anything out in the woods without a gun.
      As far as this tool bag who made the video....another example of someone pretending they are an expert while making "camping" videos...when the chips were down,excuses and failure,the proof is in the pudding.
      Now he is selling some piece of shit bag for $167 bucks that I could get for $30 bucks and a patch of his fucking dog for $20.
      Anyone who follows this tool,doesn't have a clue.

    Joe, I had found your channel before I had found Alone on the DVR . I can honestly say that watching your channel and then ultimately alone stoked my interest in bushcrafting and backpacking. Had it not been for that I am not sure if I would have never gone back into the backcountry. I was a pretty hardcore backpacker and camper when I was in my twenties but I have a lot of knowledge and experience in my grey beard now and I was resolved that my camping would be at 18th century reenactments. Because of you inspiring me to get back out I now have gotten back into the backcountry bushcrafting and have got a few buddies and their family too also. So Joe thank you so much 😊! I now can't wait to get backcountry even if it is for an overnight .

    Episode #3, hated to see you go! I have to say I love watching these types of shows but I could not have even tried what you guys attempted. I was hoping you would have found that fire steel, I was pulling for you. The over all theme I am gathering from this show is the importance of family to survive/thrive. Family seems to be the most important piece of gear. I love watching your videos keep them coming and keep your head up! I am sure you learned more from this experience than any other "perfect" camping trip which makes this experience a success!

    Very kewl show! Can you say what clothing items, any other bags, etc. you were allowed to bring, yet?
    Amazing opportunity of a lifetime!
    Knowledge, skills (& some luck) are critical to surviving (&/or thriving) in a "lost while camping" situation.
    I hope the show takes off!
    People discussing problem-solving BEFORE something happens where they might be separated from others in the woods can save lives!
    Knowledge not only allows people to survive in the woods, lowering or even eliminating fears, but also helps people really enjoy camping, etc. that might not otherwise.
    GREAT stuff!
    Glad I stumbled upon this show!
    Looking forward to seeing more!

    Joe, some things just are not meant to be, but you came out better and stronger after the show. I just discovered the show and went back and watched your season. I like what Fowler said after winning season 3, he said every day of your life is an opportunity to accomplish something. There in lies the lesson we can all take away from the show. Take each day as it comes and push through. We will surprise ourselves with what we can achieve. (paraphrased of course)
