Clay's 10 Survival Items for ALONE Season 8

  • After watching the short "10 items" vid that the History Channel released, I realized that I didn't explain why I'd chosen those items. So this week's video is going in depth about why I chose the 10 survival items to take into the Chilko Lake Wilderness on ALONE Season 8. We'll go through each one and talk about some of the tradeoffs of choosing those vs some other piece of survival gear. I'll also talk about the decision to take a ferro rod vs making primitive fire using a bow drill or other means.
    My 10 items were:
    Sleeping bag
    2qt Dutch Oven - amzn.to/3xfgM25
    Self bow and arrows
    ferro rod - amzn.to/3cAwxc8
    snare wire
    Gransfors Bruks Axe - amzn.to/2TnXmcV
    Silky Katanaboy 650 saw - amzn.to/3pIGrh4
    Leatherman Free P4 multitool - amzn.to/3wgAElf
    Fishing line and hooks
    Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

    Grouse, Deer, Rabits. Got to have some meat. Especially early before the snow. And competing with the other predators was just next level outdoorsmanship. No one is talking about his building skills but his narrow taller cabin, smokehouse, and Deerskin loungechair were all fantastic!!!

      a snowshoew hare is 700 calories. A grouse is 200 calories. WHOOPPEE, when hunting all day takes 1-2k more calories than the 3000 calories you'd need to hole up in your sleeping gear.. what you need is FAT and the way to get it is to make lots of netting out of the cotton rope hammock., so the producers made it against the rules to have more netting than you can use as a dipnet.

    I never watched tv show Alone till I saw it on Netflix. At the very beginning episode 1 I knew that you will win. Trough whole show you showed great skills like building safe shelter, you went exploring, hunting, animal traps, fishing etc. other competitors did just shelter and fishing, and because of that they come to the point of starvation.
    I am big fan, I m glad you win, you deserve it - my honest opinion. You showed what was needed to survive.

    I wondered about the viability of bringing a bow-fishing arrow in your quiver.
    People seem to get hung up debating the "10 items" but it seems to me that the competition is almost certainly won by your "given" gear selection, such as the specific type of coat, boots, t-shirt, thermal underwear, etc. - Its an area competitors have to select their own items and there is a wide variation in clothing effectiveness.
    I wonder also about the rules, and if "water proof boots" and "water proof pants/winter bibs" could be combined into just bringing insulated hip-waders. Probably not allowed. But that would be an obvious choice to me for fording creeks, stalking in marshes, fly fishing, tending nets, setting fish traps, possibly even for hiking 10 miles through a temperate rainforest. Haha!

      I think rabbit os overlooked. They are just about everywhere. If you do not know enough edible plants in your area and live mostly on fish, rabbit, squirrel or birds can be important. Eating mostly fish is great for high fat, but you can only have so much before it runs right through you. Thats very bad out there. it Dehydrates you, and youre not getting all the calories out of it that you should. Some solid meats can balance that out just right if you dont know your plants. Just fish or just rabbit long term is not good. together though theyre great.

    Great work on the show Clay!! One thing about the show that I'm a little skeptical on...
    How many arrows were you given? When someone is risking an arrow at a squirrel up in a tree on day one, something doesn't make sense? On a different season I watched a guy intentionally shoot a log and basically pull the arrow on with 2 fingers?? I'm an avid archer, that just doesn't happen..
    If you are given only 6 or 8 arrows for the whole time they should be treated like they were gold and why does the "I'm down to only 1or 2 arrows" scenario never take place?

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      We were allowed 9 arrows. I was pretty careful with mine. Can’t say about the others.

    • @codyhughes148
      @codyhughes148 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A couple things: first, you’re assuming whoever shot the tree is an avid archer. They may not be and not everyone is going to take the same precautions as you. Second, there is nothing to do if you miss a shot but track the arrow. These people aren’t taking a risk every time they see an animal. You’re watching a TV show that maximizes drama. Out of 10 people you may only have 3 that shoot their bow at a live target all season, and most of those will be small game at close range.

      I thought if I were to do that I would take a flu flu arrow with me with a wire or thumper blunt, that way tree or flying targets could be shot and minimize loosing the arrow.
      I know that fish get farther from the bank and go deeper as it gets colder so I thought that maybe you could make a set up using an arrow with a float on it, dangle some line with a hook on it, attach it to a makeshift real on the bow, fling that arrow way out there and maybe catch a fish. I bow fish a lot, and those arrows weigh a ton and can’t be shot very far, so I’d never use that, plus most fishing regulations don’t allow you to shoot at trout, just carp type of fish. It looked like that water got deep pretty fast, and getting a bow fishing arrow deep and still stick a fish is very difficult. Who knows

    Love this show!! My wife wants me to try out for it. I went through the list of things and it looks like you and I were on the same page. The only difference in our things is minor. My bow was made for me by a friend, my dutch oven is cast iron and my sleeping bag is a military extreme cold weather bag. As for my axe goes, its a custom order head. Its kind of standard head but with a viking type 6" curved cutting edge and the eye fits the handle like a pick axe. I also would take my saw. Its a 650 too. I got mine from (shout out) Canadian Prepper.

    Your thoughts requested: Consider the following:
    a. This show is primarily a calorie game.
    b. Many people on the Alone show had their food cache raided by critters.
    c. People can expend a lot of calories hunting, gathering and walking trapping lines (of which sometimes even comes up empty), or the food they do get, gets stolen.
    d. WHAT IF:
    1. A secure food vault was constructed in or near camp.
    2. Hunting blinds were put in or near camp to watch over the food vault.
    3. Traps and snares could also be added around the food vault area.
    * In other words, let the food come to you instead of you going after food. Thereby saving calories while also protecting the food you have.

      That could certainly work if you have the opportunity to hunt carnivores that might come to a cache. It would have been tough I hunt deer that way. What it comes down to is working with what you have on your site.

      @charlesbrightman4237 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@clayhayeshunter Thank you for your thoughts. I have seen too many people lose the food they have cached due to critters getting into the food cache. Seems to me that if the critters want a person's food, then utilize that food cache as bait. Properly positioned hunting blinds/traps around the food cache/kitchen/and even sleeping area and let the 'food' come to the person. Trying to think of ways to work smarter and not harder, thereby saving calories. I even considered a wider/deeper hole with food scraps in and/or over the hole. Critter falls in the hole, like shooting a critter in a hole.

    Congratulations on your success on the show. I liked seeing you making your net. It's how we do it here in Hawaii and how I learned as a kid in Boy Scouts. Regarding hooks, circle hooks are perfect for unattended fishing such as trot lines, etc. The fish set the hooks themselves, and they remain in place until you rotate them to remove them. Even the barbless ones work as good as barbed hooks. It's been tested hundreds of times and there was no difference in how effective they were.
    Thanks for all the time and effort you put in. It's all very inspirational!
