How Hogwarts was RUINED in Deathly Hallows

  • So the Harry Potter reboot has been officially announced. Last week I was wondering which version of the castle they might use for it, would they use a version of the castle from the original films or would they go in a new direction? Well it looks like we’ve got our answer. And it’s the movie version. Unless Warner Brothers were just hastily re-using assets in a last minute announcement, but that definitely wouldn’t be the case right, they’ve never done that before…
    What’s interesting though is they are specifically using the version of the castle from Deathly Hallows, complete with it’s viaduct.
    In this video me and a friend will dive into the history of the Deathly Hallows version of the castle, why it’s shunned by fans and why it’s now returning for the Harry Potter series.

      100% this, especially as this new version is so bloody detailed and also makes a lot of sense with regards to the books?
      The Headmasters Office is up on a high floor, as well as the Ravenclaw common room.
      The other common rooms are also in places where it is described within the books.
      But the best aspect of the Hogwarts Legacy version must be, that it still has the style and a lot of places that look so like in the movies.
      It is also digital so they should be able to use some things of it, right?

    Some things to note though:
    The wooden bridge WAS used as breaching point by the snatchers, if you remember the sequence in the movie of them waiting outside it and Neville running away after the magical defenses dissipated. That said, if you look at the establishing shot showing the whole pack of snatchers, you can notice that he landscape outside the bridge was indeed changed for that shot lol. There's no downwards slope like there was previously just a slightly hill-y wooded area with a clearing where the snatchers are congregated. So that location was altered as well to accommodate the battle but nonetheless still wasn't an option for the MAIN battle as the bridge is just too narrow and enclosed to conduct an entire battle on, the choice of blowing it up was probably the best decision they could've made in that regard...
    Second thing is, the choice of reconfiguring the aqueduct was a compromise since the battle was taking place predominantly in and around the Great Hall, they NEEDED a ground approach to the entrance courtyard for the battle to make sense visually and spatially. It's obviously not ideal since the new aqueduct looks kinda disproportional and out of place compared to the rest of the castle, but they couldn't have anticipate the events of the story and thus had to reconfigure certain locations to adapt the story once the later books were released.
    That said, the ground approach to Hogwarts, in general, was always kinda muddled in the mvies...I mean which pathway/entrance did the thestrals use when transporting students from Hogsmeade to the castle? The entrance courtyard was not connected to the grounds in any way, and only had access via the lake and up the stairs from the boathouse. Did the thestral carriages go uphill, passing Hagrid's hut, and dropped students off at the wooden bridge? That doesn't seem very practical and there didn't seem to be any significant road passing through there. Did they drop them off at the Bell Towers entrance near the greenhouses? That remains a mystery lol.
    As for using the "new" version of Hogwarts in promo material, I think it's just customary to use the latest material for such things, so the DH/Fantastic Beasts castle is what they're going to be using, that's all there is to that I think...

    Here is one little detail that only recently struck me when I was playing Hogwarts Legacy. The orientation of the clocktower. For a moment think of it. The face of the clock does not direct towards the castle itself. People in the other towers can't look out their window and see the clock, and thus know the time. The only people who can see the face are literally in the clocktower courtyard or towards Hagrid's hut.

    I think it is okay that a magical castle changes over time according to the needs and wants of those in control of it. As this video even points out, the marketing for Fantastic Beasts featured a picture of Universal Studios Hogwarts on the poster, despite not being the Hogwarts featured in the film. All WB/Discovery care about is brand recognition, hence the existence of this show in the first place.

    My favourite layout is the one(s) presented in the OOtP and HBP games, or films 3-6, obviously with the astronomy tower included. I think having the main entrance to the castle proper being a rickety bridge makes sense with Hogwarts age and gives an element of whimsy, as well as providing a key bottleneck for possible invaders (as pointed out in the video). I'm also okay with Legacy's layout, from what I've seen of it. I don't like the DHP1 and later film design.

Also to allow the students to apparate Dumbledore had to change up the enchantments to make it physically possible to apparate specifically in the room they were teaching them.
    Then again, we can remember when Dumbledore said "being me has its privileges" and apparated Harry and himself to the cave, so maybe he can carve out exceptions and have a magical whitelist like "these are the most powerful enchantments in the history of forever but the very essence of my aura cancels them out for me and only me"???

    The Deathly Hollows viaduct is really important and should have been there from the beginning imo. Hogwarts kind of suffers from not really having a main entrance. So having a wide bridge to a courtyard of an iconic location location capable of serving as a main entrance is important.

    • @colbyjohnson5788

      The idea was for students to enter the castle from the lawn entrance between the bell towers and walk across the viaduct to the Great Hall entrance, and visitors having to fly into the Great Hall courtyard or enter from what we think of as the back entrance.
      What we know of as the front of the castle is actually the back, but it’s the best view of the castle no doubt.
      That viaduct in Deathly Hallows makes my blood boil.

  • @aryasaxsena161
    @aryasaxsena161 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think the reason they added the viaduct there in Deathly Hallows is because they needed a way for Voldemort to arrive near the Great Hall with Harry's dead body towards the end (which is where the scene happens in the book). The design of Hogwarts till movie 6 didn't really have a way for anyone to arrive near the main entrance of Hogwarts from the forest or Hogsmeade (like they do in the books, as the books just have one entrance.) So I actually think adding that viaduct makes more sense since you can imagine it leads to the forest and Hogsmeade(the random hill/ field you mention might not be as random in universe) along with the clock tower bridge in the movie version of Hogwarts. Plus the Thestral carriages do need to arrive near the great hall as well from Hogwarts station. So having that viaduct there solves that problem too. Having said all that, I feel the whole thing would have been solved if they just had the entrance courtyard have a door that leads outside like the new bell tower courtyard with the fountain in Hogwarts Legacy instead of some viaduct bridge.

  • @jamezegg
    @jamezegg ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This idea that the fantastic beasts castle should look like the one in philosophers stone because of chronological reasons isn't correct. The castle doesn't actually physically change that much each year in the wizarding world universe, that would be ridiculous.
    When it changes in the films, that's just the films/ producers saying, "this is how the castle has actually always looked but we trust you are too ignorant to remember how it looked in the previous films or that you will just accept that the previous film was wrong but we can't change it". Hence why it has the ugly ass viaduct in the fantastic beasts films.

  • @Emerald_Vizsla
    @Emerald_Vizsla 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Okay so I mostly agree with you on a lot of these points. I'm probably not as an expert as you but I am obsessed with the castle and noticed every single change.
    I do accept the viaduct change. I'll tell you why.
    The film Hogwarts was already established long before Deathly Hallows the book released. But when it did, it specifically described the "front doors" of the castle during this battle and I had a very hard time reconciling which doors made the most sense in the film version of the castle.
    In the video games, the main entrance was often portrayed as the far quidditch pitch and training grounds entrance before POA. While that did change eventually from POA and GOF onward, the storming the front door idea of the battle of Hogwarts gets really complicated when the films and games treated the training grounds doors and clocktower courtyard doors as the main entrance for most of the series. I visualized the idea of the death eaters storming the front doors and had really no idea how that managed to fit the film castle at least until Half Blood Prince and their treating like the clocktower doors are the main carriage entrance when you arrive.
    It is odd that the front doors are on the opposite side of the castle as the carriage accessible clocktower doors habit they had set in HBP. But I do support the change they made so that the "reception hall" and front of the great hall was changed to the main entrance with the change of the viaduct. They now have an actual front door to storm.
    I also personally never really accepted the viaduct bridge to the viaduct west entrance doors because honestly, it didn't make a lot of sense to build it that way, when the bridge to the opposite field did make sense if the train was over that way.
    And to support this, in a GOF deleted scene, there are carriages in the courtyard outside the great hall which makes sense if they viaduct was a bridge to the cliff instead of the viaduct entrance.
    I've also seen many images of the castle that try and maintain that there is still a viaduct bridge connecting that door in addition to the lengthened new one.
    Personally, I think the changed viaduct bridge in DH is more impressive than the other one anyhow. And while it is awkward that FB films maintained the last version of the castle we saw, I dont think the changes really did ever happen. Although I do acknowledge, while we experienced it, that the castle may have changed through time, I don't think it actually did. It does make sense to me, that the FB films being made after the HP films, would maintain continuity from the last state we saw the castle in.
    And finally, I dont think they'll reuse the layout of the film castle. It sucks, but I definitely think they'll change a lot.
    Good video.

    Controversial opinion -- I like the viaduct in Deathly Hallows. Hogwarts never had a proper front entrance in the movies and I think the viaduct did that.
    Even in Hogwarts Legacy (where you see a proper main entrance), you have to go through some side corridor to get there. The Great Hall (which is so central to the movies and books) is so far removed from the entrance as well.
    I hope the keep the viaduct bridge and show how you can walk from there to Hogsmeade. That would make a lot of sense.

    Honestly, I don't think that there's any in-universe chronology or explanation to this. From their point of view, all the changes they made throughout the films are just retroactively valid for the events of all the past films, as well. It's simply retconning. Like, the viaduct might not actally be there/be in that spot in the first few films but it being there in Deathly Hallows does not constitute an in-universe change, it just means the filmmakers changed their minds about what Hogwarts looks like and what it always looked like. And that's why they used the Deathly Hallows version in the Fantastic Beasts films because to them that's simply the definitive version of Hogwarts now and the previous version sort of belong to an alternate reality, if you will.

    I really do think they’ve just rush-released the promo and used an image that already existed. They NEED to use all or parts of the Hogwarts Legacy version.
    Sidenote, the grand staircase annoys the hell out of me in Deathly Hallows. No reason for that ridiculous change.

    Sorry but no way the tv show doesn’t use John Williams music, the two things I doubt they’ll change are the wands or the music. Because could you really imagine Harry Potter without Hedwigs theme? I highly doubt it and no producer in their right mind would get rid of such an iconic theme for something else, will there be other music for moments throughout the series? Yes likely there will be but the main themes like hedwig or Harry’s wonderful world will likely still stick around for the occasional moment especially with how Harry Potter world is already built. This is also why I doubt they would change the wands because they have hundreds of thousands in stock for the parks being sold every day. Redoing them will anger fans making them prefer the originals and will cost a shit ton of money to replace stock wise. Plus again John Williams music is in the park as well and I don’t believe for a minute anyone would want that replaced.

    It always wound me up, even at the time that they changed both the viaduct and the grand staircase for the last film in the series. Though in defence of the Fantastic Beasts point you made, in the Snape's memory's sequence it's still the Hallowe castle despite that taking place long before Philosophers stone so we were always supposed to pretend it had always looked like that.

    I’m not gonna lie, I have absolutely no understanding of architecture. Hell I probably couldn’t even draw the layout of my house if needed and I’ve lived here for over a decade.
    That being said, it sounds like they desperately need to just establish one definitive layout of Hogwarts. Maybe use the new game as I imagine you can explore it far more than what we’ve seen in the films?

    I really hope there is a brand new redesigned castle. Would be so awesome. I actually am building a castle in Minecraft that is smaller and way more accurate to the books. If you think about it, the movie fastle is wayyy too big. When there is only like 20 classes and a few dorms....
    Also another thing is how do you get from the courtyard to the viaduct if the viaduct bridge has been relocated 😂 i can tell it was just for action.

      Seriously just the way that the books describe the castle having a 1st, 2nd, 3rd floor and so on proves it’s supposed to be more compact than the movies, or Hogwarts legacy where it’s basically a town of its own.
      Tho that’s the version we’re accustomed to at this point, I don’t think they’re gonna distance themselves that much from that

      @@fabiofuoco another thing that proves your point is that it is described as having many turrets, more like a traditional castle, which aren't seen in the movie version.

    • @kaisattelberg5548
      @kaisattelberg5548 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes to redesigning the castle, no to it being small in the books - there's plenty of unused classrooms, and far too many corridors and turning corners and walking for ages from one class to another occuring in the books; it's also 8 stories + towers on top of that - if you go by the books, you'd expect gryffindor tower to have 15 floors, with the common room on the 8th and then 7 floors of doorms on top of that.
      If the castle only had the few dorms and classrooms, there'd hardly be a need for more than 3 stories, as the ground floor's class rooms go up in number to at least 13.
      And the movie version isn't too crazy vast, either - it's really just the great hall, the grand tower, the quadrangle off that + clock tower, and then the west wing + courtyard and surrounding buildings. It even dropped the 8 stories, largely.
      What the books would most likely boil down to is an 8 storie blob with even taller towers sticking up from it, looking like an utter piece of crap. Nobody wants that.
      I've gone through countless iterations of how to make the information in the books work in a somewhat historically feasible castle, and no design was able to satisfy both feasability and magicalnes; the most promising design I could come up with, mainly to cope with the 8 stories, included interconnected buildings climbing up a slope (that's not described anyhow in the books), to the point where individual parts of the castle are never taller than, say, 3 stories, but being on the inside, you're able to walk what's 8 floors, just that they aren't straight one above the other.
      The viaduct is the bridge - it's simply a term for a specific design of structure, namely that build by the Roman's to transport water from the mountains into the cities.
      Also, the movie version has plenty towers, with plenty turrets - getting so magically ridiculous as to stick turrets onto turrets, as up on the grand tower - because that's what a turret is: a smaller tower sticking out of a larger one.

    What’s so annoying about this is that the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone version of the castle was the closest version to the books. It had the grand staircase with moving flights of stairs, a large entrance opening up to the grounds with a road leading outwards, the whomping willow just round the corner, Hagrid’s hut a straight shot out of the entrance in front of the forest. In the last chapter of the Deathly Hallows a bunch of allies from Hogsmeade jump over the outer walls and run towards the entrance through the grounds, and the orientation in the first two films would have worked incredibly well for this shot.

    The Hogwarts model on the studio tour is amazing! It was so much bigger than I had imagined, and the walkway around it is perfectly designed to give you every view and angle. I could have stayed in that room for hours. Also this new series is a crap idea.. It's like remaking the original Star Wars films instead of just writing new ones.

    Hi, how’s it going. Just going to share my thoughts on this: The bridge extending from the courtyard to the hills never bothered me. It also felt like I was returning to when I last saw the castle (Deathly Hallows Part 2) in Fantastic Beasts (when they used it again). The movement of the bridge makes perfect sense and I can say why: It moves for authority figures or when important people who aren’t students need access.
    I find the bridge to be iconic and maybe that’s because I was in 3rd grade when I saw Deathly Hallows Part 2 in theaters on July 15th, 2011.
    Personally, I don’t like the idea of a full Harry Potter reboot since Daniel Radcliffe is Harry and nobody can replace him. Same with Emma Watson and Rupert Grint as Hermione and Ron. The casting of the trio (in the films) was perfect. I wish HBO chose a different era like continue Fantastic Beasts (because I really liked it and that takes me back to 8th grade and early High School feels), the Marauders, the Founders of Hogwarts, or something on either Snape/Godric’s Hollow or Tom Riddle. What do you think? Curious to hear your opinion.

    • @kevincobble934
      @kevincobble934 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThreadBomb The films are much more iconic than Hamlet though. This reboot would be the same as Disney recasting Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or Leia. Some roles can never be recast (and I’m not talking about the younger them from different eras). I wanted Fantastic Beasts 4 or Cursed Child films with the original cast, not a reboot of my favorite films.

    I would much prefer to see a new version of Hogwarts in the HBO show. It doesn’t have to be drastically different but I’d rather they didn’t just recycle loads of stuff from the films (it concerns me that they used the film score for the teaser too). Like, what’s the point in doing this if we’re not getting something fresh.
    Heck, if they’re gonna copy something, then they should take inspiration from Hogwarts Legacy, or maybe the Jim Kay illustrations if they wanna do something more ‘out there’…not just the same thing we’ve seen countless times already in live-action.
