    They actually filmed in the V&A. They were not allowed any lighting, so had to film with the lighting on the statues. The room where the “king” was smoking only allowed it because it was Stephan Fry.

    Also fun fact that Alex's bodyguard Amy is also transgender in the book.... So I think that it was really really cool that they were able to get a trans actress to also play in the role for the movie. Even if it is a really small part in both the movie and the book. Very very cool!

    • @johnnehrich9601
      @johnnehrich9601 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I LOVE Amy, the character and the way she was played. Every sentence she gets to utter is pure comedic gold. A lot of people don't catch that quick wink she gives when saying about the firecracker kid "it was good he was in a hospital." I love her interaction with Alex on the plane going back when they talk about her dog. The quick bit where we see her and Alex out on the campaign trail apparently playing a card game in a hotel room.
      But this is also a part of the overall way all the roles were so inclusive, and yet done so subtly, I missed the extent of it the first few times I watched. That is a world in which I'd want to live.

    OMG, im so glad someone finally asked who perfume genius is. He's an artist. and he's incredible. i think his cover is also used as a little nod to Alex coming out and immediately getting into queer culture and history (in the books). it's a deep cut, but perfume genius is perfect for that, which just goes to show how important it is to have queer voices in the room and behind the scenes.

    Casey McQuiston actually likes Taylor Swift now, and hasn't talked negatively about her in years. Some people just like to bring up the past and cause drama.

      Saw something in passing when I was trying to get their pronouns right. Didn't look too far into it.

    • @AnxietyRat
      @AnxietyRat 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@yaynayormehyeah, to be fair a lot of people didn't like Taylor back then. Because she was extremely extremely vague about her political stance due to her management telling her to stay vague. And so a lot of people due to Taylor's background (and some old lyrics that she has since changed)... Assumed that she was a Republican. And due to the Republicans being absolute trash towards lgbtq+ people... people then assumed that she had those values... And so a not small amount of queer people REALLY didn't like Taylor back then... Because they, incorrectly, assumed that Taylor was voting towards of party that was ACTIVELY trying to dismantle their rights.
      But also I will say that Casey Mcquiston was VERY catty and mean and rude towards Taylor back then. They said some misogynistic and body shaming things... Really horrible shit in truth... But again sometimes people get defensive and snarky and mean when they're scared their rights are going to get taken away, right? It's the fight part of the fight, flight, freeze, fawn response, I guess. And Taylor was a public figure that was visible and so people were able to direct their fear and anger towards her. I'm not trying to defend that type of behaviour. At all. It's horrible. But I do psychologically understand how it can happen.
      But yeah, in recent years Taylor has been super open about her politics... And Casey has FULLY apologized for their behaviour back then and has posted Henry and Alex edits that they find online that have Taylor Swift songs onto their Instagram story so clearly, they don't hate Taylor's music. If they are publicly liking and sharing edits of their characters with her music in it.... And to be honest Henry and Alex DO fit a surprising amount of Taylor songs! They are an extremely Taylor coded relationship as the younger people would say lmao. So yeah everything is on good terms... it was a very one-sided hate as Taylor Swift probably had ZERO clue that Casey Mcquiston existed back then.... But yeah everything is good now that Taylor is open about her politics.
      All we can really do is expect someone to apologize and SHOW that their behaviour has changed and Casey has done that. Not everyone has to forgive them but I think a LOT of Taylor Swift fans have forgiven them after they took accountability and apologized and showed changed behavior.
      But yeah I don't necessarily think badly for the people who don't forgive them as Casey did do some pretty heinous stuff... nothing completely unforgivable, in my opinion but still really really unnecessarily mean stuff that absolutely didn't need to be said to any person. But again people WILL get cruel when they are scared and hurt and angry... It's unfortunately a part of human nature.

    The descendants of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip without royal titles are Mountbatten-Windsor. Prince Philip famously complained that he was the only man in Britain who couldn't give his children his last name. So, naturally he got his way.
    His actual name was Battenberg but he and his uncle changed their names to Mountbatten to avoid the German connotations when they became British.

There are not a lot of happy queer rom-coms. The movie made me laugh, cry, dream of the impossible, and believe that loves wins. It was so important to also watch a s*x scene between two men that was gentle, sensual, caring, loving, too often it's the opposite. Many people remark about this being an enemies-to-lovers type of story. But the two are not really enemies, except in Alex's head. They haven't had much interaction in the past where they fight or argue, mostly just glare at each other from a distance. In the book, this might seem longer as so much is taken up with setting up the story in the first chapeters, who the American characters are and how they relate, with an occasional jab at Alex's disdain toward Henry - which he images is returned.
    Once they are in the closet, it feels like, in the movie, they have reset their relationship back to ground level. In the book, Alex overhears Henry's discussion of Star Wars with the young patient, and begins to think of Henry as a real human. In the movie, we only see Henry's comforting the child from a distance and we can also see Alex's heart to start to melt at that point. For the movie to continue with the enemy concept would seem a step back.
    Alex doesn't realize he now likes Henry but how he says goodbye and his first reaction to the text message shows he really does, the hostile feeling has dissipated. Some reactors think the movie moved too fast on resolving this but I don't see how they could have dragged it out without it seeming petty on Alex's part. And this allows the movie to deal with the romance more instead.

    When Alex said "the difference between rugby and football" he meant American Football (hand-egg), that's why it made at least a little sense for him to say it (also Americans just know nothing about rugby in general). You can really appreciate how impactful having a queer intimacy coordinator was when you see how heartfelt & believable the kissing/sex scenes are, knowing which of the played out gay tropes to avoid and which to embrace is a process that's becoming more nuanced by the day and this film really nailed that line well. I do agree with the "really, really high meh" prognosis, that's about where it landed for me as well.
    I've also seen some compelling (unconfirmed) theories that the king himself in the story was also gay & hid it in order to "maintain a traditional royal image" which would explain why he would have read every one of the leaked emails and believe Alex & Henry's love was real based on their contents. It fits well with the fantasy, as sad as that reality would be for him personally

    you neednt have set aside those two minutes talking about the technical difficulties. The "f'n camera" text and maybe an additional battery died text flashing in and out wouldve been sufficient.
    Having said that, this is by far the best review I've watched of this movie. Despite your giving it a "meh" (which you've explained and which makes me wonder what your yays are) I enjoyed your review because (as others have pointed out) of the additional information you've provided from other works.
    And you've got an astounding level of knowledge of American politics which I assure you Americans do not have of British (or any other country's) politics, but I dont know if that is a personal trait of yours or points generally to the differences in our educational systems. It's obvious as you're watching and reviewing it that you are an active audience member (you get the implications of scenes immediately whereas other reviewers are like "ohhhh they were on the phone!" as Alex hangs up the phone.
    I subscribed to your channel here and will look into the podcast because you are a person who appears to have a thorough mental library of movies and provide a rich (substantive---I dont need gawking or shocked faces or squealing and yelling while watching a review) feedback. While watching it I thought, "if he has any other reviews of movies I've already seen, I should come here and watch them with him again."
    And even though I am neither a bi- or homosexual man and am like you, an ally, I think the word "feast" fits the description perfectly of what I experience watching this movie. I love it. I cant get enough of it which is why I search for reviews and yours was great! Kudos!

It's also nice to see a straight man who's not afraid to acknowledge how stupidly good looking the leads are. Seriously ... 🥵 I think overall your judgement on the film would be similar to mine - except that I absolutely love romance films so they don't have to be top tier for me to enjoy the heck out of them (repeatedly, in the case of RWRB).

    I am so obsessed with this film and watched it multiple times already, along with every clip, blooper reel, interview, and reaction video in order to squeeze out every bit of the experience I can. Now I'm circling around to rewatch some of my favorite videos once again, including this one. Sure I will return at some later once again, too.
    I'm reminded of those Shakespeare productions where the stage is mostly bare and the audience has to focus on just the actors and their performances. (Not a particular fan - give me Gilbert & Sullivan any time.) In the case of this movie, it isn't the details, some of the low-budget production values, the story itself - it is the interaction of the characters/actors. There is such chemistry between them all, in particular the leads, but also the supporting actors, which comes through even in their off-screen interviews.
    From the start with the cake scene, I remind myself this is a comedy, where things sometimes are over the top to be funny, instead of accurate. What a ridiculous impractical cake whose only role in life is to fall on these two. At the same time, there is no other solid food visible, not even snacks, just alcohol. I'm not a drinker but I'd be drunk as a skunk in that setting, being nervous and fidgety and wanting to hold something in my hand which would have to be a drink. Although Alex does a much classier job as getting sloshed.
    By the way, Alex's fear of what fork to use is negated by apparently there not being any silverware needed, other than a dessert fork.

Suggestive verbally (‘He is’ , ‘your Royal Hardness’ or ‘Big Ben’) or visually (the phallic references: Washington Monument, Eiffel Tower, or Henry riding his horse in the polo scene): yes. The love scene is both incredibly sensual, intimate and yet visually chaste. In the book the visual references are absent. The story involves 2 young adults in love, their sexual activity perfectly normal and certainly not ‘raunchy’.

    I don't know how modern movies are made, but I suspect they film all the scenes with a green screen as needed, and then the film is sent off for post production. If for some reason Amazon cut back on the funds or whatever and the cgi was done poorly, it is too late - I would think - to reshoot the scenes and somehow get around the need for the green screen.
    So many classical old Hollywood movies were made with characters sitting in a fake car and the background rear-projected. To modern eyes, painfully obvious, but at some point, it also becomes part of what makes it a period film. Or maybe if the demand is there, the movie could be re-cgi'ed?

    • @yaynayormeh
      @yaynayormeh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree that rear projection in moving cars is part of the aesthetic with vintage movies, but you make allowances because that was the best that was available at the time. And in this case, the knight also gets rescued by his prince.

    Another kind of interesting a mistake in the book about British royalty, probably because it was written by an American, is that other people have told me that the title, Prince of Wales, is specifically used for the ppl who are going to ascend to the throne.... But in the book Henry has the Prince of Wales title but he IS still the spare in the book ...so I don't think that he would actually have that title in reality. His brother Phillip would. They took that detail out for the movie so maybe it was left out purposefully because it was too egregiously incorrect... I'm not sure.
    You seemed to really enjoy the politics within this movie... A lot of people I've seen react to this are pretty bored by the politics and were more so focussed on the romance aspect.... I think that you might enjoy reading the book. Because the book is significantly MORE political than the movie was. It goes into a much deeper dive regarding the politics. They deliberately did not include that in the movie because of time reasons... they really really just wanted to focus on Henry and Alex's relationship and leave out all of the additional political stuff that was happening around them. It's obviously still very much a fantasy America and fantasy England politically... But yeah the book does go into a LOT more detail... Also specifically how they got outed is a LITTLE bit different in the book. So if you do decide to read it you'll have that to be bit of a surprise at the end, I guess.
    Also if you do decide to get a version of the book I would highly highly highly recommend getting the Collector's Edition of the book because there is an epilogue chapter that was added to the collector's edition that is in Henry's perspective(the entire book is in Alex's perspective EXCLUSIVELY so it was kind of interesting to see some events play out in Henry's perspective in the movie because we did not get it in the book). It's a really truly wonderful chapter and I'm very glad that Casey decided to write it. But some people have shown pictures of the chapter on Tumblr and Twitter so there are ways for people to read the chapter if they can't get another version of the book other than the standard one. But I mean you've kind of have to search for it which is a pain...so yeah, I would highly recommend trying to get the collector's edition from the start. Henry's chapter talks a little bit about his mental health struggles in the years after the book storyline ends and I can relate to that quite a bit so I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for it.

      If they called Henry the Prince of Wales in the book, that is CATASTROPHICALLY wrong. I wish I had time to read...

      Indeed, but since the book has been reedited at least twice with no change to that specific detail, I think it was intentional. After all, it’s a fiction story and needn’t be an exact reflection of British royal family customs.@@yaynayormeh

      @andre_p On the other hand, Prince of Wales is a VERY specific title, and if you are setting your story in a world that has any connection at all to reality, that's a huge error.

      In the book Henry's mother is Princess Catherine of Wales (eldest of 3 daughters of Queen Mary, a homophobic b***h). Henry, Philip and Beatrice are 'Prince(ss) X___ of Wales, just like George, Charlotte and Louis. The title of prince or princess is only passed on to the grandchildren of a reigning king or queen, hence why Archie and Lilibet now have those titles.
      One thing that the film version gets so mixed-up. When Henry says that his mother is the Duchess of Edinburgh, HIS title should be Prince Henry of Edinburgh!
      (I live in Ireland but was brought up in the UK, and yes I'm a nerd).

      @@helenryder8999 Calling Henry a Prince is fine. Calling him Prince OF WALES is wrong. His elder brother is the only one entitled to that moniker.

    Why didn't you put the beautiful love scene in the reaction. A lot of other reactors have included that scene in their reactions.

      To avoid the TH-cam copyright protections, it's best to keep clips of the actual movie to under 30 seconds. That bit was just me silently smiling, so I edited it out.

    Halfway through you paused a split second before (one of) the best line of the movie to prattle about their names....then cut out your reaction to "he is" ....I totally would have liked to see your reaction, much more than your take on fictitious names. I enjoyed your reaction though.

    Wow. I am from the US. I was honestly shocked by your black MP. I had no idea that the UK cared about CRT, BLM, or defund the police. I thought those were American issues. I guess it’s more international than I thought. We do live in a bubble of here. Could she be bringing up US issues to deflect from the UK problems she doesn’t want to talk about? I am sure that is universal political BS.

      Like I said in the video, she's trying to make a name for herself being 'anti-woke'. It terrifies me there was a (slim) chance she would be our Prime Minister.
      Activists here took a lot of lessons from the American BLM movement. Look up what happened to the statue of Edward Colston in Bristol, which is about 16 miles from where I live.

    Usually don’t make comments like this. I love watching different peoples take on this movie but before I even got to you doing the reaction I could not get over the assumption that since this is an American author they were going to get things wrong. Actually stopped watching. Probably a good reactor but really wasn’t in the mood to watch someone that started out like that. Just my two cents. No hate at all. Just hit me the wrong way.

    More of a commentary on American politics, which this guy is grossly ignorant about. Just review the movie. It's a cute coming out story. I enjoyed the movie. It's not as political as people try to make it. It's a love story. Period.
