Bro, another reason was it's price as well, it was marketed as a car under 1 lakh but it's actual price was above 3 lakh
Just add a little bit extra and you can easily get alto

Finally someone addressed this . Jimny Kei variant comes with 660cc with turbo charger engine , its a mini suv withe excellent minor cross country performance. But Suzuki has no mood nor the interest to take the risk to sell the 660cc here cause they know it would called as super underpowered by our auto "experts". Even in Pakistan suzuki sells the alto 660cc automatic refurbished shipped JDM . For India's ever crowded city 660cc is enough bt biggest hinder is Indians themselves , they don't have the money to buy to powerful cars yet will mock n criticize which is available in their budget. Biggest example was now discontinued Nano . I myself did a 12 hours drive from Reckongpeo to Shimla in a Maruti 800 with 5 big sized occupants, it drove beautifully even on the unprepared gravel n stones filled muddy himalayan roads . Our domestic market should to change now in virtue of practicality ,, Thank you for this enlightening vid ,,

I have always been a fan of kei cars, I like their compact design. Even variety of new models that keep coming every six months. I own one kei car, not by by dimension but by engine size. Tata Nano 623cc.
Daihatsu Copen (Sports car), all four variants with CVT.
    Nissan Dayz.
Even I would like to buy Honda gyro (3-wheeled scooter). Electric version of course. Suzuki Let's Basket. Yamaha Niken motorcycle (not at all small engined), Yamaha Tricity scooter. I can go on...
Also I would like to have japanese style railway system which connects small rural towns and villages. Japanese style railway stations which are market place as well as food court of sorts, with line up of vending machines.

    • @CatCaretaker171

They have a narrow track gauge and lesser population. So I don't think trains like those would work here. Also, 95% of rail tracks are either broad or metre gauge in india. Modifying even the smallest railway line can be impractical and involves a lot of capital expenditure. So yeah, the current track length is better and can be useful for future expansion or acquiring fast trains

I have read that all these cars had to be redesigned as Indians don't appreciate really boxy cars.
I am not sure if reintroducing them would work.
    Great video though 👍🏻👍🏻

Very informative & indepth analysis. Thanks.
For auxiliary boost the electric motor is replacing the turbo charger. Kei cars have taken note of the same. Say for example the Suzuki smile wagonR which you showed at the end of your video, has a 3 cylinder mild hybrid power-plant named R06D. It's ICE is paired to a CVT through a torque converter. But with a 5kgm torque electric motor handling stalling speeds, we can do without the torque converter. It will be less refined but the AMTs we are now used to have prepared us for it. There will be considerable cost reduction. It will be the first Direct Drive ICE technology in the world. I sincerely hope Maruti tries it out.

Actually Japanese are very practical and smart people.
They sold cheap kei cars and eventually their people started getting very rich in 70s...they started buying 'safer' vehicles.
Indians need to also be practical, special initiatives must be given to families to shift from two wheelers to atleast Alto car.

Two wheelers are India's kei cars. Less than a few percentage of car owners in India are soo rich that they would drive a car for single passenger on a sunny day. We have two wheelers for such use cases.

i also say the same things, people have started buying bigger and bigger cars where they should have bought a sub 4 meter car...tin my locality i have many people that doesnt have any space in their house, so they bought cars like safari, Scorpio and park them on the narrow roads, blocking the street. for the god's sake if your house doesnt have space to park car inside just dont buy car, hire taxi or buy a small car

The business case for a Kei car segment in India is sound on paper and great clarity in your presentations.
BUT the first real ambitious foray into this segment was met with an enormous failure. I'm referring to the Nano, it was in form and spirit a made in India for the world Kei car. But the Indian market refused to put trust in the car's reliability, cars are still a status symbol for us Indians unlike a utilitarian convenience for our Japanese counterparts, Indians like to have the space to haul everyone and everything even of we don't need it 95% of times and for more such almost intangible reasons this segment will see a rough time taking off in India.

Power cars are good but the common usage car market is very less

I so wish we had some RWD cars in budget of 16-18 lakhs .. So the sport of drifting will catch on ... But sadly if we need a brand new RWD car we gotta shell out 60lakhs+ which have to be modified then one can start drifting turning the sport of drifting in India only for the Uber rich ...

I would love to own a sports car in the price band of 15 lakhs, yet, the reason it is impossible to have one in India is
    1) our roads need SUV type of ground clearance
    2) nano was a trial of a small car that filled the aspirational gap, yet car being a status symbol in India more than a form of personal transport the segment isn't viable now
    3) the 4 meter catagory is a gradual progression of the kie car itself and serves the purpose of the Indian family size
Anyways one of the very thoughtfully done videos out of your really good series on automobiles, all the best

'Keijidosha' are not only a need for metro cities but also for emerging cities, I shifted to a society 7kms away from main city and we drive there for about 2 times/month and traffic there is just rising enormously . Not only driving will be made easy, but sturdy cars could be made in low costs rather than risky suzukis .
Govt. should reduce taxes even more on "Kei Cars" , so people will definitely get attracted to them .
Economy will rise from increasing vehicles .
