But do you know why such an ambitious project failed?
in this video, we will try to answer this very question and will deep dive

I don't understand why people keep on saying that it failed because of bad marketing. IT FAILED BECAUSE OF BAD ENGINEERING. you covered it in this video but it has been put as one of the many reasons.
    Nano failed because:
    1. Bad engineering
    2. Mindless cost cutting. Cost cutting requires innovation not only replacing parts with bad quality products.
    3. Not enough focus on innovation.
    Rest everything are just excuses.

The Nano had a few issues but they could have easily been worked out. The Nano is the ideal car for city driving. And also on mountain roads. I've had two Nano cars and the worst that I can say about them is
    1. The A pillar gives a blind spot on twisting turning roads.
    2. The early model didn't have a temp gauge. Tha later ones all do.
    3. The bonnet/engine cover could be a bit more easy to open. You need to twirl six wing bolts, one or two of which inevitably get lost
    4. When the car gets older the fuel pump motor installed inside the fuel tank starts getting whimsical.
Most of these problems can be solved and if Tata were to restart production of the Nano I will definitely trade in the old one and buy the latest. BTW I also have a Gypsy and Tiago, but the Nano is my vehicle of choice for going to town.

    • @roWon9

I drive a Mercedes ML350 and Honda Accord V6 here in Canada, but overtime I am in India and drive the nano, I say WOW. Perfect Point A to Point B car and more.
In my experience, the nano was bad mouthed by people who did not even own a car.

I own the TATA nano LX which was launched in 2010 and the TATA GenX Nano (AMT) in 2015. I think the car is worth the price. All the things that the host mentioned were also lacking in the base versions of Maruti 800 at that time (Passenger side mirror was optional, No Air bags, Air Conditioner was optional etc.). But it had more space - headroom, 3 could seat comfortably in the rear because of higher seating.
I live in Canada now and the SMARTfor Two (by Mercedes) I see here also has 3 lugs and the width of the front tires is lesser than the rear.
Though not officially called as RECALL, TATA did replace and retro fit a couple of parts to mitigate the heating/fire hazard issues. They would also call me every quarter to get feedback.
According to me, the biggest reason of it's failure was its long wait time due to it's plant being shutdown in Singur, West Bengal.
It took them 14 months to setup a new plant in Sanand, Gujarat. While they continued manufacturing nano in Indica plant, it was not enough. There were not enough nano on the roads in the next two years to take care of all the misconceptions about the car.
Almost 2-3 years from purchase, I would meet people at Fuel stations on highways asking me if I modified the car. They would not believe that I overtook them on the standard engine. They thought top speed was 60 km/h while in reality it was 105 km/h.
They would also ask me if I got my car towed if there was a ghat in between my journey ---- hearing such questions after 3 years was ridiculous. I will never sell my nano - though not driven for the past 2 years in India.

I fully agree with Mr Ratan Tata that the marketing strategy is mainly responsible for the failure of NANO, however there are few more reasons the customers expressed to me personally.
1 People did not understand the specifications of NANO
2 Absence of Disc Brakes on Front Wheels
    3 Two Cylinder Layout
4 Clutch Pedal , Brake Pedal & Accelerator Pedals are very near to each other
    5 Three Wheelbolt layout
6 Pressed steel wheel rim with very bad design
I have been using Nano for the last 7 years with a lot of satisfaction with a clearer understanding of limitations of Nano.
I have travelled in Nano from Pune to Nagpur almost nonstop with AC ON & without making the engine off.
Aurangabad to Nagpur trips in peak summer were also trouble free, of course it is nicely maintained in all respects

    9) accidents - due to rear engine - there was much less protection in a front collision , just like Maruti Omni .
    bad reputation started ❌
    10) fires & many times more negative publicity about fires by the global competition ❌
    11) production closed.

      By the way Good question
1st that is india not the other nation
      2 western culture showcase
      A luxury , moderness
3 indian is so conservative market
      Anything can survive or dead
      4 indian buyer's
Just like america is so huge country and the trucks carry camper van facilities = campers truck
India is deferent dhaba every were
America based have only way side amenities just like indian expressways have
      America have long route parcels
Europe have only common facilities just like sleeping and small pantry
      But copy paste of America
      And few topins of india
India new trucks are perform as well just like having in Europe standards

Overall video accha tha but nano me aag lagne bala Jo issue usme conflict hai aapne Kai point isme add nahi kiye Jo ki bahut jaruri hain
    1. Fire case sirf starting me kuch cars me aaye the Jo ki total 5 to 6 car hi hai
    2. Tata ne fire case study ke liye ek foreign agency ko hire Kiya tha for root cause analysis jisme main unhone ka tha ki car me kuch bhi Aisa nahi jisse aag lage
    3. Aag ki fake news viral karne me Indian 2 wheeler industry or Marti ne news agency ko hire Kiya tha. Kyuki sabse jada loss unka hi ro Raha tha
    4. Most important Aaj bhi 10 se 12 saal purani nano roads pr chal rahi hain without any problem and fire case.
Nano ko flop karna Indian automobile industry ki Sochi samjhi sajis thi

All of those who criticise nano have never driven one.
I was a proud owner of nano and never faced any issues.
The size, even though smaller than 800 from outside, was considerably larger in inside. Its high ground clearance made it easy for people to move in and out.
All those fires were mostly due to after sales modifications such as ac installations etc.
It was rugged enough to travel more than 35k kms in a span of 3 years.
I truley wish it makes a comeback.

In addition One more reason of Nano failure is that firstly Tata put up Nano plant in West Bengal where they struggled with state govt and locals due to which they never gained much production and also lost much of their investment And then finally moved to Gujarat.

One of the biggest reasons behind the failure of Tata Nano is Mamata Banerjee. Rattan Tata chose Bengal to give employment to a poorly developed state, but Mamata for her politics ruined his plant Singur. This led to a very delayed launch most people including my Dad moved over after the car was delayed. And finally when they did deliver, due to inflation and various losses it was barely a 1 lakh car.

My view on Nanos' failure is its attire and name, firstly it looks a bit odd lika an auto, minimal looks like a car, and the name itself resembles it is a smallest and cheapest among all. a middle class man need a good car in low price for their family, but they never want to showcase themselves in a cheapest among all car. Secondly the car is strictly for local use, not intended and reliable to use it for highway or some long rides atleast occasionally people want to go with their families. What i think is Tata hasn't properly understood the segment..

Let TATA release once again this NANO XTA -- I am sure it will be run away success -- Let the NANO be sold only through DIGITAL mode and not through deleadership -- keep the price below Rs 2.5 lakhs payment through Credit car -- It will sell like hot cake

    @bharathh.c5440 ปีที่แล้ว

They say- You learn more from failure than from success. In hindsight, the pricing itself was the problem. You simply cannot build a car for just ₹1 lakh. The company simply bit more than it could chew when it announced the price & stuck to it even though everyone knew it wasn't possible (unless it was ok for the company to have negative margins). Instead they could've tried to build a more valuable car priced in the range of the lowest priced car in the country at that time (say Maruti 800 or Alto). That could've given them some breathing space to come up with a strategy about cost cuttings in the product avoiding too many compromises in quality & reliability.

Nano should be a pure hybrid car with .5 l engine. Power should not be a problem if it is a pure hybrid. The price should be around 2-3 lakhs.
Rather then the round look it should look like a proper car. Comes with 2 seat,4 seat variation.
