  • Dear Sewing Friends, in this video tutorial I would love to show you how to make a very simple (but useful) wardrobe staple - a camisole. And... it has a bust darts! I know we have been all waiting for a design with bust dart, and I decided to start with a hands on method so that hopefully it gives a very practical understanding of where the bust dart comes from and how it is created in this case! Yes, it will require you to make a text garment, but you can't make something without putting in the effort. I truly hope you enjoy and make something beautiful for yourself!

    What a beautiful garment! All my camis are embarrassing. I cannot find any that I like in retail. I don't like 'stretchy' fabrics that make them form-fitting. Your instructions and design make the garment 'skim' the body shape without defining imperfections. Your instructions are so well detailed. Thank you so much.

    Thank you for putting this together for us. A dart is so important for fit, whether small busted or large. Lining and properly facing these garments is very important as well. And neither is difficult to do. I have watched many "new to sewing easy tanks" and I don't see any way that they are practical. They are falling off of shoulders and gaping everywhere, boxy and just a fabric tube. I'm not just a tube! 😉 I think that would be very discouraging for a new sewist. This is excellent! Thank you.

    How timely this is! I spent last night trawling websites looking for a pattern for a camisole just like this and couldn't find one. I will enjoy the process of drafting the pattern myself following your guide almost as much as wearing it. Thank you for your clear and detailed explanation.

    I love watching your videos. I love how I get to use my measurements to design one of your designs unlike the big 4. I don’t fit into many of the commercial sizes and am always grading the pattern. Your styles are a lot of the styles I want to wear. I have been looking for a cami pattern and yours is beautiful and exactly the style I want. Your videos are great! Thank you for the time you put into these.

    Oh my, what a stunning cami Alisa! I have a very popular cami pattern but didn’t feel it was for me (after making three versions). Yours is very similar but with less ease, wider straps and the addition of a bust dart. I totally want to try your diy. Also, I appreciate how to add a dart and move it to the side seams. I didn’t realize it was so simple. I’ll definitely use that technique in other garments. Excellent video, as always. Thanks for breaking it down to make it easy for us:)

      @@ThoughtfulCreativity Just before the lockdown I was gifted a huge amount of fabric and I did quite a bit of sewing. One of the things I did since I had to use what I had was copy a thrifted tee shirt that had a great fit. I made two of them from cotton jersey knit and they are the best fitting t-shirts I have ever worn, custom fit just to me, no commercial pattern just my measurements. I love how you start with no pattern and end up with something that fits perfectly. I love how you break down the drafting instructions to show all the details. I recently watched your video on seam allowance and love how you explained when to use what allowance. I have used commercial patterns all my life and that 5/8 this really wasteful. I think I am gonna try the 3/8 and see how that changes things. I have begun using a lot of French seams so for those the 5/8 is still good but if I am not doing a french seam a smaller seam makes much more sense after you explained it so well. With a smaller seam you use less fabric from yardage and you save that extra step of trimming...........a real win, win!

    Once again, you’ve created another wonderful pattern and sewing tutorial. I appreciate how you guide your viewers to always strive to do a good job. Tips like tying a knot at the end of the bust dart, instead of backstitching are invaluable! I really remember your good tips - I’m guessing because you make a point of explaining the ‘why’.
    Alisa, I might have missed it, but when sewing the side seams, which direction should my bust dart fabric go? I’m guessing downward? I placed my bust darts on the side of the cami as you did, not in the underarm.

    Amazing tutorial! Thorough and just enough handholding. Also teaching us principles and skills to personalize garments. Unless I missed something, I would think that adding darts shortens the front panel. Worst case the front panel is a little shorter than the back or I can lengthen the front... Thank you, best instructor :)

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello there :) adding a dart does not shorten the front panel, because you are spreading in, not subtracting from it. You are not just drawing a dart in the middle of the front pattern piece you are rotating it, so the total length of the side seam stays the same.

    Hi, thank you so much for this amazing tutorial, I wonder if you could please help as I seem to have a problem with my pattern. I have drafted my pattern, however after adding the dart to the pattern after making a mock up I thought I would line up my front and back pieces of my paper pattern to make sure they seem correct before cutting out of the final garment fabric( I folded the dart in so it is like it would when sewn) and the side seams are now really off. I'm not sure if this is because I had to make a rather large dart so this has thrown off the side seams. I am quite curvy and have a large bust so I'm not sure if this is why. please can you help!! xx

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity

      Because in pattern drafting when you divide that measurement in half you get your bust level/armhole level and you don't need to take additional measurements.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) you don't have to add lining if your fabric does not need it 2) rule of thumb for me - choose slightly lighter fabric than the main project fabric, but it all depends. You can google more information about it.

    Amazing drafting introductions. First time I’ve had a tank top fit me so well. Instructions were clear and direct. Thank you. I do have one question for you. I made mine out of linen so it is not as drapy as yours, which I’m ok with. However, i hav a 10 inch difference between my hip and waist. This has caused the pattern hem to be higher in the middle of the front and back and lower at the sides. I kinda like it like that with the linen but how would you suggest evening it out for future shirts so the hem is even all the way around?

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my goodness, how did I miss your question? I see what you are talking about, in this case I would add necessary length to the hem at the center front and then curve it into the side seam. That way the side seams stay as is, everything else stays as is but the length at the bottom of the center front is adjusted :)

    • @tygress12
      @tygress12 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries you make amazing content and I absolutely love it. I will try it again and curve the hem as you suggested. That makes a lot more sense why I keep seeing that in ready made clothing. Thank you.

Would you know how to make patterns so I could make her cloths that actually fit her. If you do could you video your way in detail.

    I think I missed something, when I added the dart my front was shorter than the back piece. I review the video again and I did not see an adjustment to the front so when the caminís sewn, the side lengths match. Help! BTW, love your videos.

      @ThoughtfulCreativity  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there! You are absolutely right, we are not adjusting the side seam because you are simply rotating the dart and opening the side seam to accommodate that dart, it is not changing the length of the side seam after the dart is sewn or take away any of the length. For your project I would check 2 things: 1) if the original length (before the dart was rotated) of the front and back side seams matched 2) if you have sewn your dart as per your pattern, sometimes people accidentally sew a bigger dart in the process or the markings aren't transferred all the way and that results in a skewed pattern, or you might stretch the fabric as you are working with it, usually happens with bias cut parts though. If you still cannot find what happened - then adjusted the front side seam length by the necessary amount :)

    This looks so nice!
    I do have a question about the bust dart. When you drew it on the pattern, I see a line in the middle a bit longer than the dart (close to the 10:48 mark), then you added curved lines. Can you tell us about that?

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is juts a way to mark dart in the pattern so that you can clearly see where is the dart once the fabric is cut.

    I have a question in regards to the armhole on the front block, after you move the dart to the side seam, it looks like the armhole shape changes, does this not distort the measurements of the armhole?

    First attempt muslin didn’t fit the busts I added a little more ease to the waist to get that over my breasts and think I have a working pattern now. Before I cut 2nd Muslin I have a question
    After cutting and moving bust dart is the front arm hole in supposed to be smaller than the back? Thank you so much made your shorts and love them !!

    Cool Tutorial 👍 gut when you moved the dart at 10:20 you made the armhole smaller. Wouldn't you have to add that missing length?

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the whole point! If you add length back to it - you will have a gaping front again.

    Good evening! I've drafted out my (your) cami and was wondering if I can change the neckline to a rounded one? Would I simply divide F & C and round that out???

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fran, hello there! For sure, you can either do that, or if dividing in half gives your neckline not enough depth for a good curve then just take about 1or 1.5" above point C and use a large round bowl/plate to round the neckline.

    I am making the test garment now. I pinned the bust dart. But, I noticed I have a gap in the arm hole in the back and it almost looks like I need a dart there. That would be an odd place. What is your suggestion.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Jill! You should not have a gap in the back underarm section. Here are a few things to double check 1) make sure you're not pinning more that needed. You need some room around your armpit (wearable ease) so that you can actually put the garment on and wear it, and breath in it. If you pin too much that might skew the back pattern piece and cause it to stretch out at the neckline, this happens especially when you work with necklines and fabric that can stretch a bit during fitting, and are not a finished garment just yet. 2) slight gaping at the underarm section on both sides, even after inserting darts, can be fixed by repositioning the straps of the garment and if there is extra fabric in the bust/underarm section. If your strap is located too far down your shoulder - then it will skew the garment and cause ripples and gaps and armhole will not sit flat. By repositioning the straps I also mean adjusting the "peaks" of the front and back pattern pieces to the left or to the right. 3) you may need to make your back armhole a little bit shorter to eliminate the slight gap, but again, just double check you have plenty of ease to put it on and breath, that you're not taking too much into the bust darts, and that your straps sit well on your shoulders. Hope this helps!

      Hi Debra! First of all - thank you so much for becoming a Member! I just posted on the Community Tab on my channel (click on my channel name and then go tot he "community tab") how to go about it. It does not happen often, but I have seen a couple of cases when it happens - the issue is usually with the device or the internet browser that is used to open the google drive - either the cache is full, or the browser is preventing it or smth else. In other words - it has something to do with the technology, and unfortunately not on my end, otherwise I would have fixed it right away. I am so sorry for your inconvenience and I hope that the post on the Community tab will help you problem solve this situation! Let me know if you need any further help!
