Thank you so much for this, it's the only video I've found that explains things wonderfully, and doesn't require a sewing machine (I can't afford one, but really want to make my own things!)
Watching in 2021 on a new journey! My grandmother taught me how to sew a pillow when I was young, but I needed the refresher course. This is exactly what I was looking for. And I have the same warm feeling thinking about my grandmother 😇 as I do listening to this wonderful woman teach like the pro she is. #Elite
Thank you so much for making this video i know its been 8 years since it came out but this helped me make a pillow from my old baby cloths so i could give it to mom on valentines day i hope she likes it!
Thank you, this video is great! I love to hand sew. I recommended this to my friend who teaches a home skills class in middle school. This is the way my mother taught me but I marked the sea, line with a pencil so I would sew straight.
I am the most useless person in the world when it comes to crafts of any kind, and this video is perfect for hapless crafters like me. I actually found this video the first time back when it was first uploaded 5 years ago, I was looking to make a joke pillow for my mother - a pillow with a case covered in crazy cat faces, lol. This video was so easy to follow that the pillow actually turned out far better than I thought it would given my complete lack of skill. I'm here now because I'm planning another pillow and couldn't remember how to do it, and hoped I could find the same video I'd seen before. Very glad it's still up! This time I remembered to save it :)
I know this video us been up got a while, I hope you’re able to see this...thank you so much for sharing. Your video helped me turn my dads flannel into a pillow for my daughter. It’s one of the only things I have from left from him. I was very nervous. Your video helped me right along. My final product isn’t perfect lol, but it was made with love and it shows. Thank you for helping me do this for my girl. Her and my dad were best friends. And she’s had a real rough year. I can’t wait to see her receive this. Thank you. Merry Christmas!
Hello Jann! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have some sewing experience, however, I was no so confident to make pillow cases for myself. With your tutorial, I will definitely will be making some silk/satin pillow cases for my family and I.
This was such an excellent tutorial. I've made 2 pillows now. I'm so excited to make my own and stop buying expensive over-priced pillows from the stores! :-)
Thank you so much for that! It was very easy to understand and very easy to follow. This is my first time watching you because I don't do very much sewing, but I'm wanting to make pillows for my daughters from my husband's shirts. He passed away in August. I know that's a totally different thing than what you're showing here, because I'm going to have to figure out how to use the fabric from his shirts, but I'm about to go look and see if you have a video that sort of matches that. I did. Go ahead and watch how you closed the pillowcase. You said you used a machine to do that one little stitch as a guide. I don't have a machine. I'll just have to do the best I can. But I do have a question. How do you stay so straight in line? I know you have it pinned, but I could just see mine probably going all over the place even with it pinned. I guess it's a matter of practice. Which I am going to do I'm going to practice for. Ever try to do it myself. But I'm so thankful for this video cuz I had no idea how to do it. This gives me a really good guide. Appreciate it.❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial! (and your 'how to hand sew a pillow closed'). You saved me from spending way too much on some cushion covers I was eyeing. I am terrified of sewing machines and couch barely fix a minor tear along a seam before this. Thank you thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! Very helpful! I had a small pillow with a cartoon puppy 🐶on it that was given to me as a baby and it would never leave my side. I wanted to make several small pillows today and this is the video I needed to get started. Awesome channel, btw! Thanks again! ✨
Thank you for the tutorial!! I use to hand sew all the time as a kid (wasn't that great at it haha), but now, in my 20s I am wanting to pick it back up!
This is a wonderful tutorial! You explain everything beautifully and I'm definitely going to make my own pillow cases now. I do have a sewing machine but I really love hand sewing as well.
Thanks! I watcheda couple of other videos that were like "ok, now go ahead and sew the edge of the pillow case" without explaining how to do the actual sewing part...
This is a good tutorial. 👍🙂 I saw your video for closing the open area. Of course, on that tutorial, you had sewn a guide line for your ladder stitch with your sewing machine. Since this is hand sewn, would you recommend marking a guide line with some sort of chalk pencil for those who are inexperienced at sewing? I probably wouldn't bother with marking it but it might be helpful to some. Thanks!👍
thanks for you'r amazing video--it helped me a lot--can you please make a video to how to make hand sew pillow case??that you can change the case when ever you want
Not sure what you mean. Do you mean the pillow forms are very puffy and have rounded corners? If so, you can still cut your pillow fabric square, and add the form. You may need to add a little bit of pillow fill to the corners.
This may seem a dumb question but I would like to embroider one side of the pillow would I do that before assembling all the sides together? Also, can I just stuff the pillow with stuffing instead of putting in a premade pillow?
I'm glad it was helpful. I bought the fabric through Greenhouse fabrics. I bought it 2 years ago, so I don't know if it's still available. I would search some of the online fabric stores to see if you can find it. Thanks for watching!
@@JannNewtonBeautyOver60 Thanks, found it! I do the knot at the end differently so its inside the pillow but everything else is the same as my mother taught me, Thanks, Jann!
Thanks! I am actually not making a pillow I am making guinea pig fleece pads. The pillow is a similar concept except I will not be putting a pillow in the cover, I will be putting mattress liner to absorb the guinea pigs pee.
You could also use these same instructions, and instead of inserting a pillow form add fiberfill. Still making a pillow without having a sewing machine.

Hi Jan! Thanks for the video. What if my pillows on question are very puffy and don’t have defined corners? (Much more rounded)
Not sure what you mean. Do you mean the pillow forms are very puffy and have rounded corners? If so, you can still cut your pillow fabric square, and add the form. You may need to add a little bit of pillow fill to the corners.
When knotting the thread... do you put the needle through both pieces of fabric?
Yes. Thanks for watching!
This may seem a dumb question but I would like to embroider one side of the pillow would I do that before assembling all the sides together? Also, can I just stuff the pillow with stuffing instead of putting in a premade pillow?
Yes, I would embroider first.
hello jann! id like to know how bigger should i decide to cut the fabric in comparison to to size of the pillow form
I like to cut the fabric the same size as the form. This will make the pillow cover snug, and not too loose.
