  • I'm building a DIY dual axel braked car hauling trailer on a budget of under €600.
    This episode I'm building the trailer frame, installing suspension, axels, hooking up the brakes and wiring the trailer

    Creative build, I like the reusing of the car parts. I was looking at a mitsubishi van leaf spring and diff imagining how to use them.

    Looks like a lot of work went into it, would be good to see a full walk-around of the completed project.

      It was always the plan, but with the rain in Ireland and a bunch of other excuses I've not painted it yet...

    Looks good ! interested to see how the suspension felt with fixed brackets on the back too ? I was under the impression the leafs needed to be fixed to a swinging arm to allow for movement ?

      Only the front on the spring is fixed, the back is floating to allow movement.

    Thanks for posting, I'm just in the process of building my 4th car transporter project (cf bedford single car transporter, Mercedes 2 car tilt commercial car transporter, and a basic car trailer) I'm going a slightlty different route with a single axle 20ft caravan chassis and another axle(1500kg rated axle x2) I've had to go for 185x70x14" 8ply tyres to get the correct rated loading, have you used van tyres, I would have thought that car tyres aren't rated for that kind of punishment. Also curious as to why you didn't use phenolic birch ply or Aluminium 5bar plate as your running boards, was the £600 build cost the restrictive factor? I must admit, I'm looking at around £1200 to build my tilting trailer, sorry for the questions, but there may be cheaper design stage alternatives to building my trailer, cheers

      Cost was the main factor, in hindsight by using steel I'm able to use the runs a tie downs when carrying light things. I've recently moved house the transporter trailer came in very handy. The car tyres are definitely the weak point rated for from memory only 550kgs but it gives me a 2 tonne limit, the hitch is limited to 2.7tonnes and my current car is only rated for 2.5.
      I found I could buy a 2nd hand car hauler for about €900 so If my wife decided that 3 trailer is too many I could still get my money back.

      @@garagemade4422 would using angle iron work as well or would it need to be rectangular box section

    • @garagemade4422
      @garagemade4422  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, I've seen light weight trailers made from angle, but if your hauling a car or something heavy I would err on the side of caution. Sorry I didn't dig up my plans life took over last weekend, and it's my daughters birthday this weekend so I'll try to get you access to my plans this evening.

    What jack/wheel kit did you use at the hitch? Thanks

      I'm based in the Republic of Ireland and I sourced most of my supplies from trailer spares (not sponsored).
      The jockey wheel I got from here, prices have changed since I built my trailer www.trailerspares.ie/48mm-heavy-duty-smooth-jockey-wheel.html
      The hitch was this one www.trailerspares.ie/kfg27.html
      These links are not sponsored but I found the company very good to deal with and they sorted out any problems I had.

    How heavy is the trailer and whats the usefull weight it can carry

    • @garagemade4422
      @garagemade4422  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trailer is light to move around by hand, but like most twin axel trailers it's difficult to turn. The hitch is rated to 2700kg, the tyres are rated to about 2200kg, so I recon I could load 2000kg on to it (4400lbs freedom units)

      @@garagemade4422 nice, i am looking into building one my self, just need to check about the laws in my country for registration, they are very strict.
      What was the pipe dimension and wall thickness

    • @garagemade4422
      @garagemade4422  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From memory, 100x50x4mm for the main rails and 100x50x3mm rectangle tube for the rest, 50x50x3mm square tube, the axel was thicker 50x50x4mm. 25x25x3mm angle for the treads, 100x5mm flat bar for the fish plates and anchor plates.
