It should be noted that Nintendo rejected Argonaut's Yoshi pitch due to already working on Super Mario 64, and it was too similar to what Argonaut presented them. Jez San himself said this in an interview in issue 24 of Sega Saturn Magazine. So it was basically rejected due to conflict of interest. On another note, last year Jez also said that he'd like to give Croc a remake someday. Perhaps this could give Croc a chance to be a much better game with modern controls.

Never realized this game was also on the Saturn. This was a really charming 3D platformer back in the day. I felt like if they could’ve gone on to make a Croc 3 on the PS2, they could’ve actually honed their craft enough to where these games were actually spoken of in the same breath as Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank.

All they had to do was anytime the camera got confused, just have it hold still and pull back a bit.
The camera problem was too close, and at a bad angle.
Holding still and Zooming back a bit fixes that.
The initial camera was just a little bit too close

Although the Saturn Port is very impressive, the only thing that bugged me about this particular port is that there were several songs that were removed that were on the PS1 Version, because the Saturn Port used an Audio Redbook Format, it kind of feels like all they did were record a good number of tracks from the PS1 for the Saturn and called it a day, but not all of the tracks that were on the PS1 Version are found on the Saturn, and if I'm not mistaken, the PC Version is a direct port of the Saturn version because it uses the same redbook audio.
Sources: I had the PC and Saturn Versions growing up. I played the PS1 version later on and found that some tracks that were on the PS1 were not on the Saturn and was kind of disappointed because like Sega Lord X mentions, the Soundtrack is a real treat to listen to.

I remember I played this like maybe once maybe a demo or something but I know that I tried to play it after years of playing other platformers and it felt even back in the early 2000s pretty archaic. I would say trying to go back to it now with tank controls and horrible camera would be impossible unless you have a pretty strong sense of nostalgia for it.

I’m curious: why did you own the same game on both consoles back then? How did that happen?

    • @SuperChaosControl
      @SuperChaosControl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I had gotten the PC version for my birthday, and I had a blast playing it. (I had to have been like 6) fast forward to about a year or so later, the Saturn wasn't doing so well, so we happened to be at some sort of Swap Meet, and I saw it there for like 10 bucks. I remember thinking, "what?? They have this game on Saturn? And I can finally play this game with a controller instead of a keyboard?"
So I asked my mother for it, and my mom doesn't really know anything about video games, she didn't know that game is the same one they got me a year or so back for my bday, and she ended up purchasing it for me.. So ended up having 2 copies of the same game.

    • @JMFSpike
      @JMFSpike 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Another thing not mentioned in the video is the poor lighting compared to the PS1 version. That's not a game specific issue though, as all 3D games released for both consoles have better lighting on PS1. For the most part, Saturn did better with 2D while PS1 did better with 3D (although it had Z-buffer issues.)

@JC Denton Absolutely would have to agree with you on that statement. With it's unfairly punishing health system, the whole unnecessary shop system, an inconsistent delay when it comes to making jumps, and a rather strange glitch involving some of the bonus room trophies not counting towards 100% game completion, yeah even I couldn't stomach this sequel. By the time it was released in 1999, there was much, much better variety when it came to platformers by that time. The first one was okay at best, and the second one was pure shit.

Also this was a Fox interactive game and anyone can tell you their games turned to total garbage pretty fast.

I have to say it is absolutely astonishing that Argonaut was able to create a "full" 3D platformer on Saturn hardware and I wished the Saturn was able to get more 3D collect-a-thons before its demise. Even if the game hasn't aged particularly well, this still seems quite the technical achievement much like Star Fox on the SNES.

I loved Croc on PlayStation 1. I had the exact same issues that you did and I really tried to overlook them because the game was fun. I even ported it to my PSP and by then I realized I wasn’t wrong about the controller aspect. One simple thing keeping everything the same to help would’ve been to allow the crystals to stay on screen longer so you could pick more up after being hit. As you said, most hits weren’t our fault, it was Camera and controls so having that one simple thing would’ve made a huge difference.

    Croc had, at the time:
    - The “collect crystals to use as life” like Sonic rings.
    - The “rescue caged Gobbos” like Rayman.
    - The “backpack” , climbing, swimming, and ‘tank’ controls like Lara Croft.
    - The “spin attack” like Crash.
    - The “butt attack” like Gex.
    - And the remnants of the story of what seemed to be a 3D Mario World 2/Yoshi’s Island sequel game.
It was as a mechanically solid game. There were just more memorable games on the market at the time.

Croc was one of those games that was hampered by the consoles it was on. I bought it for the Saturn back in the day for many of the same reasons highlighted in the video, it was an impressive looking title on the Saturn proving it had 3D chops. If you played this game after Tomb Raider you would likely be fine with the controls, It's after playing Mario 64 that the consoles limitations come through. The N64 from day one came with an analog controller, and as such all of the games take advantage of it. The Saturn and the PSX/PS1 had standard digital pads and had to make do with that control scheme.
I wonder what a sequel to this game would have looked/played like on the Dreamcast. I imagine something like Fur Fighters in look and feel, even though going back to play that game on DC is similar in respects, now we are use to Dual analog sticks on our gamepads, back then we somehow made it through that game with one analog stick and digital controls...

Well, here's a question. Considering the fact that this is a 3D platformer, and that the Nintendo 64 was specifically made for 3D games, why the heck wasn't this game released on the N64? Think about it. We could have had a 3rd party 3D platformer on all three 5th generation consoles at the time, but they didn't do that for some reason. It's weird to think that even though most games from that era were guaranteed a Playstation release, developers still had to choose between the N64 and Saturn.

Your review makes me want to add this to my collection after I have my Saturn refurbished. I still highly recommend Super Tempo. I know you didn't love Tempo for the 32X, but Super Tempo on the Saturn is a lot better--especially if you have a turbo controller. I do think it's way too expensive nowadays, but I find it to be my favorite platformer on the Saturn. The only downfall might be the language barrier as some light Japanese is necessary for at least one level of the game. It would really benefit from a fan translation. It's pretty funny, and my Japanese is far from fluency. I still found it highly enjoyable. Tight controls. Good graphics and music. Short, but the collectables and the multiple endings give it decent replayability.

I always appreciated the game CROC back in the day but I also agree with everything ‘ol Sega Lord X is saying here. Despite MARIO 64 was an excellent game that set the standard, a lot of other polygon games of that era were just rough around the edges. Another game from that era that I enjoyed a bit was 40 WINKS on the PS1. If I remember correctly it played much more smoothly than CROC did.

Very fair review. Games like "Mario 64" and "Banjo Kazooie" were all the rage back then, and I was very grateful to have Croc as a way to have something comparable on the Saturn. However, although I never thought of it in these terms before, your review helped me realize that it was actually like if "Banjo Kazooie" had "Resident Evil 1" tank controls. "Croc" tended to keep things not too fast or hectic to give players a fighting chance under those circumstances, which I appreciated, but it still made many of the later levels exercises in frustration because the controls were so stiff and clunky for a game that relied on precision jumps. It was a product of its time, and that sadly includes being a byproduct of its era's then-halfway-unresolved learning curves with 3D gaming. Still a game I have good memories of, though, and that I like to this day. Just plan on going into it as a precision platformer, and you can still have a decent time with it.

I was 7-10 during my original time with a Saturn. Croc was the last game I got for my Saturn before I made the switch to PlayStation! I did rent Steep Slope Sliders at one point during my last few months before making the switch, but that was pretty much that. I didn't mind the tank controls, I just accepted it as how Resident Evil is played. Maybe they were fine for that game but you'd expect something less restricting for a game like Croc, but getting past that, I still had fun with this game! With not much else coming to the Saturn around this time, and liking character platformers anyway, I just HAD TO go for Croc! I really must re-add this to my collection sometime. I noticed one tune from this version isn't in the PlayStation version (which one of my brother's friends had)! I still consider it to be a tragedy Sega took the wrong approach to entering the 32 bit era. They should've taken more time to fine tune their console to ensure it performs well, is easy to develop for and think about the consequences of making certain moves before making them! The 32X was just a bad turn that paved the way for worse to come! Going back to Croc, it really should be on Evercade. The first Croc cart could feature the first PSone game and both Game Boy Color releases, the 2nd cart could have the 2nd PSone title and all 3 mobile installments!

Like you mentioned not many 3D action-adventure games, another game similar to Croc but more simpler is the import Ninpen Manmaru worth playing if just for the genre alone. Has a similar control scheme + early 3D action-adventure engine, but Saturn pulled it off fairly well. The color pallet reminds me of the 3D world of Sonic Jam of what could have been.

Fun fact about argonaut, they literally made a true 3d (albeit wire frame) flying game for the original Game Boy.
They were expert programmers (hence the 3d Saturn croc), and that game boy demo actually convinced nintendo to hire them to make the 3DFX chip and 3d flier Starfox for the SNES.

Believe it or not, this was my Mario 64 back then, I know, but still, this game was great and I had lots of fun with it.
The tank controls never bothered me, it was pretty common at that time, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, games we played to death and I was totally used to it. In Croc, you can use L and R to make sharper turns while running and even use it in midair for finer tuning. I remember the camera allow three positions, for platforming, there's a higher one. 3D platformers aren't perfect, even today, when I play Mario 64, there are times where the camera won't help and even his movements can get in the way, if you try to make quick turns, etc. Croc isn't as acrobatic not as agile, it's a more limited and confined game. Jajamaru Kun on the Saturn is a similar game with similar issues, platforming is bad there, but it's a fun action game, I was so used to the Saturn version, when I tried the PS1 on an emulator, the controls are a mess, I believe the Saturn is something like an updated version, because it has the Gold label on the title.

According to interviews, Nintendo took a ton of their work to create Mario 64, without giving them any credit or anything.
Croc started as the little bits that they could wrestle from nintendo copyright bs.

Definitely a fair review, as usual. I would say to people with an interest in trying Croc, play the Playstation version. I had Croc for the Saturn when it was new, and I didn't like it because the camera is too zoomed in at all times. This leads to more camera issues and makes the jumps and climbing much harder. The Playstation version has the camera further away from the character. It plays a lot better as a result.
I don't remember why, but I got the urge to try Croc again back in early 2019. I was also curious to see if my opinion would change from back in 1998, as I was disappointed in the Saturn version. I decided to try the PS1 version after hearing it was better. And the way Croc played, complete with stiff tank controls and being playable with digital controls, was exactly what I was in the mood for at the time. I also liked the small sections of the levels. It's definitely not a game for everyone, and it has issues, but it can be a good time for those who know what they're getting into. For me, it was a pleasant surprise to finally get some value out of a game, albeit a different version, that I could not enjoy back when it was new.

The stages are designed with the tank controls in mind and never asks the impossible from you. There's also a button that lets you do a quick 180 degree turn, even while running.
That being said, the PS1 version is probably the version to get. There's less slowdown and it's a lot cheaper (as is the case with most PS1 games).
