    Hi, I looked after this little bird for about a week and a half indoors then transferred him to an outside greenhouse where it learned to feed without help after a while. We left the door open once it was a little older and agile so it could come and go as it wanted. It stayed with us for about two months before it decided it was happy enough to fend for itself. It joined up with a group of juvenile great tits and it seemed really healthy and had naturalised really well when I saw it last.

    I have one of these little guys but he's much younger. I found him on the ground with 2 other siblings, but they were already dead. :( He's doing great. I've been worried about teaching him to eat on his own though, but I'm sure it won't be a problem after seeing this video. :)

    Hi Marmaladee000000 - this little chick was abandoned in the nest box, there were ten chicks and this little chap was just too small and weak to leave. I took him out of the box literally minutes before he would have died of the cold. It took over an hour of holding him over a really hot radiator to bring him back to life.. once I got the first mealworm inside him he never looked back. :0)

    Hi Fervid84, as soon as you can start showing your little bird moving food the better. Once he was past the stage of obviously having to have food put into his mouth I used to purposely drop live food in front of him a few times before putting it into his mouth so he could associate the movement with food. I also would take him out on little excursions in the garden and find aphids and bugs etc on plants and use tweezers to pick a few up and put them in his mouth so that he again would associate these things on plants with food. After a while I would leave him in the garden on his own to explore while I sat in my office with the door open so he could still call to me. Once I had him outside I set up a food tray in my green house so that he could go there to get food if he couldn't find enough for himself - this worked really well and eventually I stopped feeding him and tried to keep my distance so that he started to naturalize. After a while he joined up with other juveniles, he came and saw me for the last time one evening and then joined his group and flew off - that was the last time he visited and it was pretty obvious he had fully integrated with the locals. A wildlife sanctuary that I sometimes take birds to said that it is really important to make them spend time in an outside aviary before release so that the local birds get to know that there is a newcomer about. The woman that runs the sanctuary waits until the birds are big enough for release and then opens the door of the enclosure so that they can come and go for a while on their own before they finally leave. This gives them the back up food they need while they are learning. One other piece of advice - when you first go outside with your bird watch out for Jays, crows etc as they are tuned in to hearing these juvenile calls and often follow you waiting to grab the bird. Can be quite nerve racking! Good luck and I hope it fledges with your help!

      I found a great tit chick he's feathered up but tiny will worms be ok to feed on until I get meal worms? What about water? Please help?

    • @suffolkliz
      @suffolkliz  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He won't eat worms, you could catch a spider or find some aphids, flies etc. They get their water from the food they eat - I would suggest popping down to your local pet store and getting some live meal worms or wax worms.
      Are you sure he has been abandoned? Great tit chicks often stay on the ground for the first few days and seem to be on their own but the parents are usually well aware of where they are. I suggest standing back and waiting to see if he calls to his parents (it may take at least 10 mins if he is frightened after being handled, possibly longer if the parent is 'chattering' nearby warning him to stay quiet). I looked after this chick because he was abandoned in the nest box and after waiting for long enough to know the parents had left with the other 9 chicks. (I took advice from a wildlife hospital before removing him). I see that this message was a while ago now so sorry if of no help. If you have an emergency like this in the future ring St Tiggywinkles wildlife hospital emergency number (UK only) and they will advise you. (Just Google the name and you will get the number).

    Hi - he was one of nine fledglings, the runt and he got left behind in the boxafter the others had long gone. He would have just died normally but I had a camera in the box so once I was certain that he had been abandoned I rescued him. I did talk to a wildlife hospital about the time lapse between the others going to double-check that he had been abandoned and they too were in no doubt either.
    This one was a little star and he joined up with a group of fledglings a few weeks after release.

    Jimi, I didn't have an aviary so I used our greenhouse! If you don't have one you could ask around or see if you have a local wildlife rescue centre that could do that last stage for you. The bird really needs to lose it's familiarity with humans before actual release for the best chance of survival and that is done by feeding it in a cage away from people, hard to do once you've become attached to it but I can see that it is the best way. I sent four rescued bluetits to a centre this year.

    Hi Jim, I was told that I could let my one out as soon as he could fly without having crash landings, since that advice I have had what I think is much better advice which is to put the bird in an outside aviary until it is def feeding itself. I don't know if your bird is a juvenile but if it is it needs to feed on it's own before release. Once released it will stay with you for some weeks as you will need to leave food out for it while it learns to find it's own.

  • @suffolkliz
    @suffolkliz  15 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This must be an adult or a juvenile so it must have already been feeding itself before you got it so it should be fine once you've got it back to full health. Hope that helps. :0)

    HI Jim,
    well I assume that this must be an adult bird - possibly a juvenile that has got itself into trouble somehow.
    Basically you need to give it insects which is what you are already doing. Since they are hard for us to find the best thing to do would be to get some live mealworms for it. You can get them from pet shops that cater for reptiles etc or, if you have none near to you just type 'live mealworms' into google or any other search engine and you will find them.

    Hello, I see your video is from 10 years ago, but I could really use some advice... My niece found a tit chick (about 10 days old) on the asphalt road and brought it home. I want to take care of it and release it when it's ready.
    I've read your comments and they are very informative, but I am curious to know if the little tit would eat maggots, as I can obtain those faster from local fisherman?
    A friend suggested to put the tit chick in existing nest box with other tit chicks. Is there a possibility for the tit parents to adopt it?
    Thank you!

  • @suffolkliz
    @suffolkliz  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, if you watch how I drop the food in front of the little bird in the video after feeding it a worm you will see how it starts to make the connection between the moving thing and being able to eat it. It's just a game of patience really Jimi - it is hard work isn't it! :0) Once it picks stuff up like that then just leave liveworms in a dish that they can't get out of for it. I left a dish of worms around all the time because they do get curious when they are searching around the room.
