    • @stonecat676

      tbh most pros use lines to guide their shapes, no need to avoid em
      a good sketch has the most potential to be a great painting'
      but shape design is definitely the most important thing, followed by value and composition
      also, once u notice em, shapes are just the most feel-good thing ever
      whenever i spot good shape design i go "whOOOOO boi, that's a SEXY shape"

      If it was easy you wouldn't need to do it. You'll get there. Restricting yourself like this is a great way to identify what is important in a piece.
      If anyone is struggling though and finding themselves getting frustrated, I'd suggest choose some study images with clearer separations of light and dark values. That way you're still learning properly but avoiding the frustrated feeling as it'll be easier for you to make those decisions. Once that's too easy for you, move onto images with more complicated value ranges.

      based on your profile picture it looks like you have a good eye for shapes too though! I imagine you see values so clearly in your head that you only need to define the perimeters of the shapes to create an illustration and that reads!

    • @katharinamarschall5662
      @katharinamarschall5662 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@gale6012 What I loved most about lines is that the line in itself is so intersting. Like use more pressure and you get a darker, thicker line. Playing with that, creating forms and shadows is very satisfying. Searching with the line for forms - this is how I do art. I see how colored shapes can do the same and are just as flexible, but I lose what I love most. (Or I'm just too lazy to challenge myself) I'm just crazy like that. I did paint in the past though. But never digitally. I don't have a talent for colors and I would need to reduce my color palette from the start or I will get lost.

    • @SoulGuitarMetal
      @SoulGuitarMetal 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can apply the same concept for lines too. Look for big shapes, simplification, and fewer strokes in the first sketches. It will make iterations and more detailed line work faster and easier.

    • @gale6012
      @gale6012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@katharinamarschall5662 I can see that too! That reminds me of school when everyone would talk about "calligraphy". I think it's the use of weighted lines to describe the edges of turning forms. I feel like that is just as good a way to approach describing form. Sinix's paint-sculpting is really suited to digital illustration. Lines are effective too in a more frazetta direction.

      The fact speed is a requirement for you is kind of already an error. Everyone works at their own pace and in doing so you put unneccesary pressure on yourself. Remember, you do art because you like to, not to be fast about it.

    • @bradperry4902
      @bradperry4902 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@etoyoshimura5834 I agree with your point. What I was referring to by “speed painting” wasn’t about wanting to paint quickly. It was that I had watched a lot of time lapse videos where several hours of painting are sped up to be viewable over the course of a few minutes, in an effort to try to understand other artists’ approaches and processes. The point I was getting at was that this video cleared up a few core concepts that helped me better understand those “accelerated full process” videos. :)

    I’m an older artist, and I’ve been doing digital artwork off and on for quite a few years. I have to say that coming across your video today, along with the excellent way you presented your perspective of approaching the creation of it, is definitely what I needed, and I believe will help me break through to another level. This is exactly what’s been missing in my digital realm of doing artwork. As one who has always drawn detailed line art first, then filled it in with values, this approach is going to be both challenging and very rewarding. I’m excited! Your channel looks excellent, and I’ve already subscribed. Looking forward to absorbing as much of your content you’ve created as I can. Thank you so much!

I've always felt like people who are good at painting, especially physical painting, just magically know how to get all the tiny gradients and colors. but you explained distillation and it clicked. you're not perfect. you're doing your best and making it look nice. that's it! it feels so much more real.

    This was super useful to me! I knew to do these types of exercises from my traditional painting practice, I don't know why it never occurred to my little noggin that I could use the same principles in digital painting. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of customized brushes and settings and lose track of the big picture.

    I went to college and got my BFA in illustration and I don't think any of my professors ever taught me this. But it was because I worked in digital art and all my professors worked in traditional painting & drawing. So not all of their techniques worked for me. I heavily rely on drawing with my digital paintings, and I always thought the issue was with the line art. But nobody ever taught me that instead of relying on lines, you should learn how to make art without them. This helped me a bunch! Thank you!! 💖🙏🏻

    Thank you for this video!! At first I used this method to practice, but then I ended up making a really cool portrait with my own style to it once I got the hang of it. I didn’t know I was capable of making something like that on my first try, but in addition, the steps you walked us through REALLY helped me train how to see shapes better and to use that to my advantage. I’ve always drawn with lines being a priority but that’s only gotten me stressed with making perfect proportions and whatnot.
    I haven’t been able to create much digital art in years, but I’m so happy I finally found a video that did help me progress. Thank you so much!

  • @ElysetheEevee
    @ElysetheEevee ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a traditional artist, so I've pretty much cemented my style and techniques over the last 32 years. 😂
    I've been slowly getting the hang of digital art, but it never felt fluid and like I was really getting anywhere. You train yourself over the years, and it's sometimes hard to figure out that "trick" to switch mindsets. It just feels like you're missing the obvious thing that will make you understand, and it's right under your nose. It's frustrating, for sure.
    Your explanation in avoiding lines (which is so absolutely important in traditional drawing and so it's very much ingrained, at least for me), and replacing that with finding the values really helped me understand how people are making their art, in a very simple way. I'm really grateful for this video. I know I kind of think back even a bit ago, and I'm like, "How did I not see this for myself?" It's the age-old idea that it's difficult to break out of your own reality to fully reach into another (it's why we still have stigmas with mental health, why classism exists, and so on). This simple and gentle redirection will definitely help me do better. I'm currently hitting the end third of my game design degree. Most everything has been core classes, so I'm really trying to learn some basics before I hit my big classes. :) I took AP art classes and even AP animation in high school, but we didn't have much in the way of digital art supplies. This was 2006-2007. I didn't even see my first drawing tablet until a college art class I took way back in 2009-2010, and it was this like $1000 one a classmate had (one that would easily be maybe $30 these days haha). Technology has come so far. I know this video is old, and I'm done yammering: I just wanted to drop a thanks for the tutorial in basic digital art understanding.
    Edit: Sorry, I wanted to add that I finally realized earlier on that I'm not going to be an sketching/pencil coloring artist any longer, but a painter. I feel so dumb that I didn't realize sooner than much of this kind of art is painting-oriented. I should've studied harder in my acrylics courses haha. I'm a bad painter.

  • @alannars2455
    @alannars2455 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Coming back to this video after taking a break from art for a while makes me realise you're not necessarily going for a one for one recreation and realism with these studies but more going for an appealing middle ground which if is why it's good to study from other artists who have already done the heavy lifting.
    Art is like translating languages, if you translate word for word perfectly it may not flow naturally in a different language, but by changing parts to account for the act of translation you can make a clearer sentence.
