Here's a quick introduction on digital brushes and my thoughts on the fastest way to get good at digital painting. There is really only one type of brush you need to become a great digital painter. This is for people just starting out, so I know most of my crowd might not be into this, but please bare with me. Plenty of more advanced content coming soon.

Scarecrow actually it’s not my first language either hehe. And I didn’t stop drawing, I just don’t focus so much on drawing from nature now and I draw more from my head. It’s funny, but now I have more time for drawing, because in art school there were also lessons like history of art and stuff

this is very true if u want to draw anime on model . as he said before . style is what u choose to enhance . if one think anime is easier either he is drawing off model or he is just messing around
it is, actually. realistic is directly based off real life and oddly easier to imitate. stylised art like anime require you to have a good idea of realism first before you modify, exaggerate and/or warp to make it look good.

as someone who was always captivated by flat shaded styles with line art, it only took me until recently to realize i actually enjoyed seeing the world in shapes over lines since the beginning. getting lost in my own line sketches has been such a nightmare over the past few years lmao

Soft brush is not bad to use at all, it's actually really good for blending and painting smooth objects! But you do need to use it right, so don't use it for everything and learn to block things out to create edges :)

I use both
[ ] change brush size, Shift+[ ] changes brush hardness. So you can quickly make a brush soft and go back. Works well. Harder brushes are generally better and you can use blending as mentioned, but if you need a soft brush you can just quickly hold shift and soften it, do what you need and switch back.

He is pretty much blending and smoothing out edges with one brush. In my case the only thing my brush does is make everything look muddy and messy.

Watching timelapse videos will only kill both your motivation and your patience skill. You end up feeling bad, and also cements the idea that painting should be done fast, so when you actually paint your brain is like: " I've spent an 30 minutes at this and it sucks."

im still kinda confused on how to pick a "fit color". like, when we think of skin color, maybe we'll think of cream, brown, and a darker version of it for the shadow. but its just feel monotone. like, i saw people use maybe a kind of blue, red for the shadow, or smth like that, but somehow it makes it looks good and not boring.. im sorry for the bad english
shadows are visible and not completely dark because there’s reflected light. and since it’s reflected, it carries the colour of the surface it jumped off of, only much weaker. marco bucci has the best explanation of that i’ve ever found, highly recommend checking out his vids out on ambient light (and just his channel in general)
The part about using red and blue for shadows, i think you're talking about the cangiante technique. A friend told me about this. Do some studies on Leyendecker, the artist mentioned in the video, he was a master at it.

To add, colour is a very complicated affair (without even getting into the mess that is pigment mixing or the myth of primary colours, which are mostly only problems in traditional art) where our perception of a colour is altered by its surroundings and brightness. Cool light and warm shadows will create the impression of a blue (or bluish) light source, and is typical of indirect outdoor lighting on a clear day for instance (because of the sky). That extends to a weird effect outdoors where things that are under direct sunlight are untinted or yellow (depending on time of day), things in partial shade (like under a tree) are tinted blue, and things in shadow that is close to the shadow-caster are reddisb-tinted (actually untinted, but tend to look warm from contrast with surrounding partial shade). But we also tend to perceive warmer colours as "lit" and colder as "unlit" anyway, so doing the opposite, with warm shadows and cold highlights (as in many of the works of johannes vermeer for example) it can create a mood that is either more stark and clinical or more calm, melancholy and "distant."
Perception of colour is affected by surrounding colours as well, an adaptation in our brains to compensate for things like bloom (light scattering in the lens of our eye, so colours bleed), indirect lighting (what the first reply talked about) and transparent materials (like water). It's the reason for "the dress" phenomenon, where most people saw a dress (that was eventually confirmed to be blue and black) as white and yellow because of the apparent lighting in an overexposed photo. For that reason, tones that are normally warm, like skin, may be almost grey or even cold (but warm compared to their settings) underwater or in a bluer scene (again, look at vermeer's coldly-lit paintings of women with skin rendered almost porcelain white), or conversely can pop a LOT just by using a normal tone. For a "stranger" example if you want to render someone with light skin in an environment with a lot of green but give it a more dreamy mood by using muted colours, you might use a pastel green for their surroundings and tint their skin slightly magenta to contrast those surroundings- or vice versa, tinting them green or teal in a fuchsia environment. That gives the impression that the surrounding light is also muted but that the surroundings are still very green. If you use a colour picker on a lot of nice looking art you'll fond parts of the skin are blue or green a surprising amount of the time.
On the topic of working with or even turning to our advantage effects caused by our flawed physiology, this is also how you can make paintings- even using traditional, subtractive pigments- that appear to "glow." If you simulate enough lens flare convingly enough many people will even squint instinctively since their brain interprets the signals it is receiving as the lens of the eye flaring in a very bright light. Another component of how this glow is achieved is basically what is called in photography or computer graphics "high dynamic range," or making everything a little darker by an amount proportional to how light it is to begin with to make the parts that are as light as possible look even brighter. If things like the sky are darker than we expect, it will make things like backlit leaves that are brighter than we expect actually look like they're backlit (or "glowing").
Lastly, since you mention skin specifically, for materiald that are translucent (meaning you can't see through them but some light gets through), light will scatter and be tinted with the internal colour of the object as well as scattering colour (eg the sky is blue during the day and golden at sunset because as the light scatters more in the atmosphere it gets redshifted). The subject you'll most often see this on is human flesh and skin, and it means shadows will look warmer and lighter since the skin is re-emitting light that has passed through or bounced off of blood, and the edges of shadows will be softer.
I was trying for 3 days to wrap my head around how digital painters get the look that they have, trying different brushes and settings, trying to repaint the works that I like, hoping it will eventually click, and to no avail. A couple of times I felt like my brain was overheating, while what I drew still looked like garbage. After following advises from this video and painting along with the examples, it actually clicked for me. Now digital painting feels more intuitive then I ever thought it would, and it's kinda addicting. What I drew today looked leagues better then anything I drew before. Huge thanks for this video.
Yep, that is the exact same with me. Seeing how painters use little to no layers really confused me, but now that I have watched this video it all makes sense now.

I’m not a beginner to drawing as I’ve been drawing for around 6 years now, but I am a beginner in digital painting and find it somehow much harder to do instead of like actual physical painting. For some reason every time I try to paint digitally it always comes out super smooth and doesn’t look right, but now this tutorial has helped me and I wanted to thank you !!!!!!!
FOR BLENDING. Use a mask of the silhouette and the smudge tool. Increase the scattering to 30-60% and reduce the the strength to 10%. Experiment with the strength of what you want. Sometimes i increase it, if i want to drag out a colour (for example clouds). Also you can change the brush to have more texture but remember to increase the scatter again. HAPPY BLENDING.

Depends on your art style.
There's no correct answer, and it depends on how much textures/shading you put in a painting.
Line art fits basic art styles that usually has 1-3 colour pallette on each part. Removing lines would make arts like these; look like Vector.
And finally, lines would ruin the textile immersion of an in-depth painting, which is why experienced artists usually don't bother with it.

Borodante has a great exercise technique for beginner digital painters! You focus on a simple shape and you can use only a big brush to paint it as precise as possible. Only when you cannot render it any further, use a smaller brush!

the trick is to NOT waste to much time on the sketching. Open 3 to 5 layers and draw a sketch on all of them within a set time frame. Your sketches will evolve this way because you need to be more creative then doing just 1 sketch and hoping for the best. Also no details while sketching and just basic shapes will help you get idea's going pretty fast.
Yesterday I fell in love with a very painterly and overly fancy brush because it blended so well and felt so natural. I wouldn't have thought that next day I would fall in love with a default hard brush for the same reason...
Actually the biggest improvement to my workflow was not only applying this stroke method but approaching the painting with grey values first to get my feet wet with it. Finding color tones is a different field of study that you don't always have to jump into right away. Just approach the learning process how a sculptor would and learn how to cut into the clay first before having to worry about texturing.

Thank you SO MUCH for this!! I've been trying for years to figure out how to go from physical media to digital painting. I primarily draw and work with pencils and watercolor pencils, so transitioning to digital never made a lot of sense to me. Then of course every tutorial I've found has either been so basic it's simply introducing basic tools, or so advanced that they're showing different techniques without explaining how the brushes are actually working. This is the first tutorial I've found that actually breaks things down and explains just how digital painting works, and it's finally clicked. I was about ready to just give up, so once again, thank you for this!

@Sinix 6:05 I want to point out there is an easy color wheel built into Photoshop. At the top of Photoshop go to windows>color. Now that the color tab is visible select the little option box in the top right corner (icon appears as four lines) and select color wheel. You can drag/place the color options box right in the middle of the art board and make it pop up or disappear with F6 for maximum color splashing.

this actually helped me when I searched for literally hours trying to find a tutorial.
Reading through the comments I see other people have run into what I'm experiencing. It definitely seems like some jitter or setting is different on his basic round opacity brush compared to mine. No matter how smooth or careful, I still can't completely blend. There's little circles left over, or I can't help but building up more color. If it's just technique, hats off to you Sinix.
It must have something to do with the hardness of the brush. Try to lower it down to get a more consistent result.
I know this video is like 3 years old but- This is so helpful. Like actually. I realized that I was making hard-edge lines instead of 'shapes' and my shading is absolute crap in those pieces, I now know that I actually need to paint and render, and sort of not worry about the lines too much, because the values define the form. Thank you so much!

2:20 this saved my life
I am using Sai but this still helps a lot!! The most struggle I have is blending I would say. I don't think I have the best understanding of it yet. I ended up with the drawing looks way too smudgy when I try to blend the colors with brush (most of my brushes won't even have it own color? It will just take color from the current layer which also means I can't put in new colors.) If anyone have any advice I very much appreciate it!!
I usually block in colours and then use a blending brush to blend the edges where I need to. The brush I use for blending is set to the following settings in Sai (long description ahead):
Min Size - 35
Density - 90
Blending - 100
Dilution - 100
Persistence - 48
Keep Opacity box is ticked
Advanced setting box is ticked as well
Quality is set to 1 (Fastest)
Edge Hardness and min density is set to 0
Max dens prs. is set to 100%
Hard Soft is set to 100
Dens size and blend boxes are all ticked.
The brush I use for blocking in colour is the Sketch Brush by meteorcrash on deviantart. However, how brushes come out always depends on your drawing tablet's settings so they might have to be adjusted to fit your needs. Hope it still is a good starting point! Let me know if you have any questions!

Photoshop actually has a color wheel build in. Go to Edit > Preferences > General, then choose "Hue Wheel" in the drop down menu next to Hud Color Picker. Alt+Shift+Right Mouse Button shows the color wheel while drawing,

I recently got into digital painting, because it felt like I hit the ceiling in terms of colouring in vector art.
