  • Five common issues with the Buick regal gs
So here are the five issues common problems I hear people complain about and also some that I've personally had dealt with.
    1. Window regulators
    2. Coolant leak
    3. Low coolant sensor
    4. Broken odometer
    5. Transmission
    Bonus MAF sensor
Good thing all these problems are cheap to fix except the transmission. But overall this Buick regal gs has been amazing to me, so I cannot complain. Hope you-all enjoyed this quick video next video should be an update on my wheels.

    Wow. Let me add some.
1.) AC/Heater Control Panel LEDs go out due to cold solder joints Gotta pull it out and resolder like 16 pads. Otherwise it's some $150 for a used unit that will have the same problem
2.) Every pully the bears go out
3.) Aluminum rims are leaky causing low tire light
4.) Oil level sensor gets sticky and causes low oil light
5.) Rear speakers rattle even with negative bass
Man, might be time to sell the GS. :P

These 3800s are excellent first project cars for broke DIY mechanics. They have tons of working room in the engine bay, parts are cheap and available, and a bunch of them are 1 owner cars owned by an old person that could afford all the maintenance.

I’d say they’re inexpensive, excellent platforms to live with every day and mod over time. They respond reeeally well to mods, it’s easy to get significant power from them, you can beef up suspension and brakes in accordance with your wallet, and you can end up with something that’s efficient, reliable, fast, fun, comfortable, and cheap.
It’s just a great inexpensive package to live with and have fun modding.
I love my Regal GS. For the money, you can’t do better.

This isn't just GS, but the W body GM cars. I moved back to my parents to take care of them in 2007. They had a 1999 Buick LS, which I then used to chauffeur them around. Confession: I got to appreciate the luxury of a car like this. I think I've replaced the driver door window regulator twice, and it needs it again. The anti-lock brakes and the traction control don't work, I came to realize. It developed the famous bad resistor for the lights, and that includes the DIC. I hate it when my dic don't work, ha ha. Driver information center. The AC air doors leaked AC to the floor instead of out of the dash later on.
I inherited this car in 2015 and then moved to Texas. I did have to get that intake gasket replace. There were some other cosmetic or appearance matters, like one rocker panel when a tire threw tread. A lot of little things. So in 2018, I decided to find a temporary car. Well, well, lookee here. A 2000 GS (supercharged) with 180,000 miles. The LS got parked in the back yard with 110,000 miles on it and has been a source of parts and drove it as an unregistered car when I had........yes.....the transmission replaced on the GS.
Almost immediately after I bought the GS, the DIC and dash lights went out, I realized that the anti-lock and traction controls don't work. Deja vu all over again.
In January of 2019, I backed out of my driveway, put it in Drive and..........nothing. I could start in 1 and then move to drive. It's been four years, I don't remember the part that broke, but apparently it is a weak point. Looking at many options, I bought a dyno tested remanufactured tranny for $2100 bucks, with a five year warranty, and found a shop that swapped it for $600. Those rebuilders often use better parts than factory, and I hope that's the case here.
A year or so ago, suddenly the car would not upshift on part throttle until some RPM was reached. Really annoying. I have the official GM manuals, all 6.5" of stacked paper, and they said it was either something I now have forgotten, or the throttle position sensor. I knew the first was out of the question, so I bought a TPS for $90. No improvement. My brother did a deep dive and someone said it's the MAF. (That's Mass Airflow sensor, not "mass sensor, fyi.) So I pulled the one from the LS......fixed.
The GS does leak about a quart month of coolant. I can live with that. When I needed a new water pump, I replaced those nylon ells with metal, of course. Pray that your power steering pump never needs replacing. I, with 60 years of wrench turning needed four days to do it.
I bought a modded, reflashed PCM. I swear, my power went up 25%, and a K&N air filter. Grandfather can lay some serious rubber.
I love this car. When I've driven more contemporary cars, I've hated them for one reason or another. I think the W Regal is still very good looking, classic, in fact, with it's wedge body. As I'm 77 I intend to drive it until one or the other of us expires.

    Got a '96 Regal 66k miles..
    No resistors to go bad..
Coolant light doesn't come on anymore after new radiator ... must look into. - "MUST DO'S" - I've done
some miles, some age. SEE SERVICE MANUAL
    "Must Replace Items"
    1- Radiator
Will leak coolant into Trans cooler, Adios Trans
2- Power steering high pressure line , will rupture, spray exhaust manifold... Engine Fire..
3- Oil pressure sending unit... plastic disintegrates, shoots ALL OIL out.. Adios Engine..
4- Fuel pressure regulator leaks Fuel into plenum, ignites, blows plenum apart, Engine Fire
    5- Nylon Fuel hoses
Pinhole leaks, sprays fuel on engine.. Engine FIRE..
    6- Wheel Studs
Develop cracks, break off, resulting in loss of wheels.
7- Plenum... Check for warping by EGR from heat, will leak coolant into plenum/ engine.. Adios..
    - TRANSMISSION TIPS -
1- At a stop, avoid hard acceleration into 2nd to prevent failure, it's weak..
2- In town, keep trans in 3rd gear to avoid constant in/out into OD to prevent loss of either/both gears.
3- NEVER... EVER have a transmission flush done..
Will cause it to start slipping..
Drop pan, replace filter, replace the fluid from the pan ONLY....
IF HIGH milage, & NEVER had a trans service...
Save the fluid from the pan, and put back in.. Do NOT replace with fresh..
4- IF Trans starts to slip, Immediately use a transmission fix additive..
Many use/recommend LUCAS Trans fix with good results, but the #1, best is
    Prolong Super Lubricants
    PSL15000.. I'd go for that.

I agree. I bought my car 13 years ago, from original owner, it was babied. I replaced all regulators. The intake, and the coolant level sensor. Ive only put 20k miles on it so I've not had all the issues mentioned. I'd like to ad that the transmission shift solenoid as well can go out. Why? In their quest to make self destructive cars, put it inside the tranny case with all the heat. A 700-1000 job.

A cooler won't help. It's not high temperatures that kill the 4T65E trannies. Just design defects. You might consider synthetic tranny fluid, although in all honesty, not sure of the benefits in an automatic transmission. Also, if you pull the pan, there's a hell of a lot of old oil left in the torque converter and passages in the body.

Number 5 should have been the 4th gear output shaft which has the teeth sheer off. The rest of the transmission is comparatively dependable. On my GSE, I had them replace the 4th gear output shaft, sun gear, clutch bands (replaced with kevlar ones), shift kit, billet torque converter, and a few other nick nacks. Anyway, it's the 4th gear output shaft that these 4T65E transmissions are notorious for having problems with.

Buick specifically state 91 octane. Now, that at or close to sea level. Octane at the pump goes down as the altitude increases. Is it any cheaper? Of course not.
I've spent over four years putting in half 87 octane and half 93 octane most of the time. Estimated, of course. Pain in the ass. When I went on road trips, I'd just use 87 octane because there is no need for higher octane just cruising along. I eventually decided to just use 87 octane all of the time. The knock sensors will just retard the spark as needed. True, I can't reach maximum power, but I ain't on a drag strip.

Well if you reset your computer you have to allow all the sensors to operate normal and send the signal to the computer. They do it to prevent people from, passing smog cheating basically. I haven't dealt with that issue just yet.

      @frequentlycynical642 ปีที่แล้ว

What do you mean that it passed but it still won't pass?
When you do as little as disconnect and reconnect the car has to go through a new learning curve. Retrain the PCM. You can see this if you connect and OBD scanner right after a battery reconnect. Numerous modules will not be ready. You might have to drive 50 miles, in varying conditions for it to be retrained.

I have a Buick regal LS and same thing happened to me super easy fix, turns out i blew the cig. Lighter fuse . I've got a fuse box inside my car and under the hood this one was located on the inside fuse box to the right of the passenger side, so i open my door and u can see the fuse box this happened to me twice and luckily i had extra fuses so i could replace them right there. I would def. Try that you'd be surprised how something so small and easy to fix, and how they'd try to overcharge u at mechanics if not fuses are like 5$ at the store just make sure u put the correct voltage in i believe you can go 5 over or under but try to use the same # that is used. Also to tell if ur fuse is blown the little metal piece that is connected will be like snapped, google a pic. That's what I did. Real easy girl! Lmk if you've got questions

Personal experience with the unsupercharged LS and the GS. On the road, my LS would almost hit 29mpg! My GS struggles to hit 23mpg. I think the official EPA data shows a 2mpg difference. When one is just cruising, yes, you are turning the supercharger; bearing friction, thrashing oil in the nose. But no work is being done in terms of compressing air.
I think city mileage is about 2mpg less, possibly 3.
For me, it is what it is.
