This was a banger! In fact the 2023 world cup quarters, semis and finals were all so close and absolutely immense games, the tension was off the charts, my adrenaline was done after all that! If you want a ripper of a game, check the 2019 World Cup Final between The Boks and England - that was an absolute ripper of a game. Keep up the good work here man, really enjoy your rugby content.
the 2023 final was a defensive masterclass. 2023 is the best world cup I have ever seen. a close one is the 2015 world cup tournament. also great games there with a few upsets
That was the start of the heart problems for most South Africans. 1 point win in quarter final, 1 point win in semi final, and then, just to rub it in, with us here T home, 1 point win in final.
Please feel free to pause the video so that you can ask questions about things you don't understand or praise/diss things that you do. I'm going to explain something that you probably don't know about the game because it doesn't exist in any of our American sports, the concept of ADVANTAGE. At the 4:07 mark you can hear the ref shout out "Advantage. Offside Green." Now, in our sports the whistle would blow, play would stop and the nonoffending team (Blue) asked if they want the penalty or the play. Rugby doesn't stop. The Ref alows play to continue until it comes to a conclusion. If , after a period of play, Blue is unable to gain enough possession or territory, then the Ref will blow his whistle, return the ball to the spot of the foul and enforce the appropriate Law. If however Blue is able to overcome whatever difficulties inflicted by the infraction to a sufficient degree there will be no stoppage of play. The Ref makes the penalty/play decision for you. However if anyone is in danger of harm or the outcome obvious the whistle will be immediate. Now, when the nonoffenders hear the Ref declair that they have an Advantage they know that it's time to pull the high risk/reward plays out of their pocket because, if it fails, they will have a 'do over'.
Most of us South Africans can't rewatch the quarters and the semis - 2 games where your heart climbs out of your body because of the suspense and 1 point difference game wins.
Cant believe they dont put the iconic scrum off Damian's mark on these highlights, perhaps not the greatest match of all time but one of the best by a long shot
You've gained a subscriber! The way you were glued to your screen 😂 it looked like you really enjoyed the game. You should consider watching the 2019 final between South Africa and England🔥-I promise you'll love it👌
It's great to see you that interested in a game. This one was a banger, and tho the end is painful for me (I'm french), it's obviously one of the greatest game. If you want to see French rugby at it's best, you should watch the France-England match of the 6 nations 2023
Possession is simple. The team with the ball can choose to keep it, or kick for territory. You can lose possession by kicking the ball out, then its a lineout for the other team (unless its from a penalty then you keep the ball). Can lose the ball forward, where they then play a short advantage, and if there was none the other team gets a scrum input. Can gather the ball from a kick, steal the balll after a tackle, rip it in the tackle, or intercept a pass. And then finally if you concede a penalty you lose possession ofc. Most teams followed a similar strategy the last few years, where the goal is to play territory rather than possession. Even if you dont have possession and you play in the other teams half, a penalty will often result in 3 points or huge pressure from a lineout close to their own goal line. You could see that in this match how the springboks kicked those high balls in the french 22, making it chaotic and scrappy to defend, resulting in tries when they messed up. This is very simplified ofc, but the gest of how the game flows with the current rules.
Have a look on the intro (national French anthem and the all blacks haka) of the last game in Paris a month ago between France and All blacks. Awesome.
Yeah, it's totally different sports, but I did full contact karate where blood doesn't stop the fight, just like rugby. The big difference, is that you face fighters about the same size as you in karate. In rugby, you can face opponents 2 feet taller and 100lbs heavier. As a flanker, I had to stop loads of players much bigger than me. That just translated to serious confidence in the ring.
This was one of three games that made every South Africa age rapidly i think i aged by 2 years after this game then came England then after our biggest rival at the final , but when it came to New Zealand i was ready to accept any result
Any time you play the ABs you know it's going to be insane. No matter how good your team is they'll find a way to challenge and maybe break your team. No assumptions when it's SA v NZ - it's always going to be crazy. Except for that match in 2018. The low that defined all the heights since.
Can see the concentration etched on your face, as you endeavour to comprehend all the complex & intricate rules of the rugby game. Good luck on your journey...
Football takes up the market, rugby can never match the marketing opportunities that NFL presents or the cultural links it has embedded into communities.
@After Dark If you have boys, let them play rugby. It makes you fearless. I did karate and played rugby. Before starting the rugby, I was very nervous before a fight in karate tournaments. Few months before I started playing rugby, I might have thought "keep your composure and avoid the blows." After rugby, my mindset in karate tournaments changed to "Every opponent I face today, will be broken when I'm done with them."
Man, that weekend was the best weekend of sports I've ever had the privilege to see. France V Boks, All Blacks upsetting Ireland, England, Argentina both having fun games. Rugby at its absolute peak.
Hoping thats you hooked on rugby! Thats the way to react, 😲 most of it, no pausing, and respect for the game. Endless classic games to watch, enjoy🏴
One thing you need to realise is that no matter what, the two best teams in the world are Ireland and France. This is ofcouse according to Ireland and France.
Before rugby, I was trying to survive fights in tournaments. After rugby, my opponents were trying to survive a fight against me in any tournament. Trust me, rugby builds confidence.
You should watch the springboks vs the britsh irish lions. The britsh irish lions are 4 country rugby teams (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales.) that come to make one every 4 years for 3 games. All 4 are really powerful teams. springboks vs the British irish lions is a great match with skill, speed and a good amount of violence. One of my fav rugby matches.
@worldrugby, As a South African living in the USA, @afterdarks reaction is the very reason you need to grow the game in the USA. The revenue opportunity and the publicity would take rugby to the next level!
Particularly, knocked forward by the hands/arms/chest, not the legs or feet. That's considered a "kick". But then it gets a little more complicated, because if a KICKED ball is knocked forwards by the hands of a defending player, the ball is considered "charged down" and remains live and playable. It's these little details in the rules that make it such an interesting sport, and drives the players to hone very specific skills and abilities.
The French complained a lot about this game's refereeing decisions, but I think if you look at the bigger picture, South Africa was absolutely phenomenal. We played in the Stade de France against France, in front of a hostile crowd, against a France team at the top of their game, and still managed to beat them under pressure in a beauty of a game. I don’t think SA get enough credit.
We complained with reasons. At the end I don't think SA don't deserve the cup, you guys were probably the most solid team of the tournament. Our bench was poor and yours probably won you the game in the end, but in a one point game you know ref decisions are what make the difference and the last penalty should have been the other way, even BOK sayed it after the game.
👀those last three games ,,i know I had a strong dop infront of me but I didn't touch it untill after the game ,,Man the braai wasn't even lit ,, And bros face watching this game 😂😂
South Africa are the best at world cups (now) 4 cups to 3 for All Blacks. All Blacks in transition but are the best in all games played - they have beaten every team in the world more than they've beaten black -
the US has good talent but lack coaching experience and they lack player experience. in south africa we start playing rugby at 6 years old. its like Khabib fighting a normal man who goes to the gym. but all that can change with a coach like Rassie. but great reaction and a great game
The world cup that wanted to give every single South African a heart attack😅
