    I agree with the overall statement of "hype and unrealistic expectations can ruin stuff for you". However, the hype with inside didn't come before people viewed it. It came afterwards, people saw it. It had a big impact on theirselves, their lives, and they praised it. If it didn't have such an impact it wouldn't be that popular. What i'm trying to say is it definitely deserves the hype, because it had an insane impact on people, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

    Interestingly for me, when I watched Inside the first time I didn't think it was that special-- it felt a bit random and I didn't resonate with it too strongly. But then I rewatched it a while later to give it another shot and had an entirely different reaction. I really related to it and it impacted me greatly.

    To be fair, the shifting aspect ratio at that one part of White Woman's Instagram is a pretty clear artistic choice. It's not like it's super deep or anything, but it's there, and I don't think it's inherently pretentious to just point out a thing that exists. To me, as someone who suffers from severe anxiety and struggled to feel comfortable leaving the house even before the pandemic, I feel like it was really more about his feeling personally around performing and his anxiety stemming from that. Like, it felt very personal to me, and most of the topics and subject matter were kind of secondary to that. I saw it as more of a general exploration of anxiety and isolation than anything. People do kind of build it up a lot into something it's not. I guess my experience with it is sort of unique too, because I didn't get around to actually watching it until earlier this year, and I'm not on twitter so I have zero awareness of any of the discourse or conversation surrounding it. I find that's the best way to actually appreciate things.

    • @violingineer7862
      @violingineer7862 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting! I saw the aspect ratio as the passage of time. Older films have more square ratios and we've been slowly making it more short and wide.

    • @ryansabin2618
      @ryansabin2618 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@violingineer7862my interpretation of the aspect ratio change was that it widened because you were seeing more into her real life and getting a fuller picture of her, rather than seeing her though the small window into her life that you get from just Instagram posts. But then it goes back to being more insta posts so the aspect ratio goes back to square.

    the window shots (from what i gathered) were multiple attempts by bo to get an aesthetic video of a plane passing by through the blinds while hes stuck inside
    it seems like he lives near an airport by how many times it happens
    so every time he hears a plane he puts the camera up to the window but he keeps missing the plane going by, which is why he swears in frustration

  • @some_williott

    I loved Inside watching it the first time, and I've rewatched it a bunch when I've just randomly felt like it, and I still love it. It's kinda grounding for me personally, it feels almost good to watch BECAUSE of how kinda small it makes me feel.
    I don't usually like watching people talk in depth about the deeper meaning or whatever of stuff, because I have those deep thoughts, but in my own head, and that's enough. Talking to someone in person about it is one thing, but I hate watching vids on it because it's always "this is what that is" and I personally always have a different interpretation.
    But I don't obsess over Bo Burnham, parasocial relationship bad and stuff. I agree there.
    The Outtakes was like an Inside Jr, the songs are good and catchy (for the most part) and some parts still hit really hard.
    Five Years is burned into my head.
    I know someone who still owes me a dumpling or a dumpling equivalent.

    Feel like inside is suffering from its success? Like the reason people talked about it is because it had such an impact. I also feel like it was still a really smart piece that deserved the reaction. I was just marveling the other day about how I kind of jam to the soundtrack without thinking. It doesn't hit the same way, but that's because I've heard it so many times. It still deserves credit for that first watch. I also feel like the outtakes being "off-message" a bit might reframe the way we see the original. Like "Oh, most of this was not the hard-hitting stuff so perhaps the final product was a little bit of a fluke."

    • @fiegorongalez6548
      @fiegorongalez6548 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      In regards to the final product's hit being a fluke, I think it was the final product for a reason. I don't want to sound pretentious here, but part of an artist's craft is choosing what does and doesn't lend itself to the central themes of your piece.
      The removing of pieces that don't support your central idea is what is known as "murdering your darlings." It's something that few artists get around to doing because they are too charmed by their vanity to distinguish what does and doesn't lend itself to the central point of their piece.
      Yeah, I don't think we should view the outtakes as a separate piece of media. Rather, they are the darlings that were left on the cutting room floor.
      And then posted on TH-cam for money.

    The thing about Bo is that his comedy doesn't happen in stand-up form, his performances are far more theatrical than any other mainstream comedian, making his work closer to that of a musician, actor or thespian.
    Inside Out was revolutionary because he maintained this fundamental element of his comedy while removing the live audience from the equation.

A solid 30% of my ridiculous attachment to Inside is due to the fact that "phone bad" is wayyyyy more of a fucking nuanced take than it should be, and tbh i haven't really seen much media (that isn't a youtube video) delve into that even today which is...idk kinda funny. Either we're all idiots and don't realize how badly our phones are hurting us or we choose not to take action and ignore it outside of talking about it on social media, ironically indulging in the thing we're criticizing....mmm...shit

    People who worship Bo Burnham need to watch all of his other specials. He has been exceptionally clear about being uncomfortable with parasocial attachment for a long time. He hates it when people sing along at his shows, yell about loving him. His specials are always incredibly introspective, especially "what."
    I encourage everybody to watch "what."

This is Twitter and youtube in a nutshell, of course, we created an echo chamber talking about how good inside was, that's what youtube and Twitter does i.e. Rick and Morty, Undertale, Minecraft, Marvel Movies...
    When something good appears it will receive praise and people being weird about it, hell, even if the movie/series/game is terrible people will be weird about how bad it was. The Internet gives a way to vocalize what they think about something, it just so happens that people like being in a club.

    A lot of this video resonates, but I disagree that there aren't substantive things to criticize the special on as well as Bo's ethos more broadly separate and apart from his cult-like following. And also disagree that every video essay on the subject is wrong. But I agree that many video essays are totally surface level. In a week I will be posting a video essay going into some of my earnest critique of Bo and analyzing his body of work by putting it in conversation with Joel Haver's, comparing, and contrasting their advice for other creators. I'm a tiny channel, but I think my analysis will interest people who like this sort of thing and might offer some clarity/solace to those of us who felt mad at the special because of its metatextual blegh. Good work, Mia!

    I broke up with someone about 8 weeks before inside came out, and we did a bit of a ‘check back in’ with each other about 10 weeks after breaking up after having some space. We had a brief but mature chat about how we had fun together, had been what we needed when we were together but weren’t right for each other and didn’t need to stay friends or be in each others lives or anything. We briefly mentioned a few things that had happened since splitting that made us think of each other at the end, and she basically got the ultimate parting shot in when she goes “oh, did you see inside!? It was amazing! Actually… Bo really reminds me of you… anyway…”

    Okay... I'm not sure I understand why you made this video.
    Correct me if I'm wrong but I think your thesis is "The outtakes we're not all great, therefore Inside could have been less good if the not as good outtakes were included, therefore Bo is just some guy who happened to make a good special and we shouldn't worship him for making a good thing?"
    Lady, let people enjoy things if they want to. You come off like the old woman in the downstairs apartment shaking her fist at "the kids" for liking rap music. Saying "celebrity worship made inside less fun for me on rewatch" is a really shallow take and not something that really needed this long of a video.
    Idk maybe I just don't get what you're saying because other people in this comment section seem to agree with you but all I can think when you say for the tenth time you actually like the special is "The lady doth protest too much me thinks"

    When Bo Burnham fans miss the point of what he's been saying for most of his career (if not all of his career) and put him on a pedestal lol, it's pretty funny.
    So, when I saw Inside, I thought it was good and well-made, but I didn't really like it that much. Then, for research purposes, I went back and watched the other specials and stuff, and I could appreciate it more because of how much he's improved and understand his style a little bit better. I actually quite liked his film, Eighth Grade, but I do think that its main flaw is that its use of the internet is so true to life that it actually seems to make the movie less clearly about the internet (which it was supposed to be about) and more about anxiety and the dynamic between a parent and their child. Inside covers what Bo wanted to say about the internet much clearer than Eighth grade did.
    Also, one of my friends said that he didn't really like Eighth Grade because Kayla didn't have like, a unique personality, but I'm pretty sure that was the point? It's just a movie about how a few days of a normal eighth grader's life looked during that time.

    And yet, even though hearing someone talk about Bo Burnham yet again was the last thing I ever wanted to do on this god forsaken planet, Mia straight knocked it out of the park and eNCNCIated exactly what I've felt about this whole enterprise ever since a person 1st pointed out that the chord progression to Look Who's Inside Again spelt "dead". ooooooooh. deep. 😐
    She's just like me for real.
    I never thought I'd actually enjoy somebody talking about this man again. And, after this video, I hope I never do. :)

    *I chose to disagree,*
    Inside is not the best pice of media, But, given the range of things it covers, the lighting and overall quality it and the fact it was done by one guy,... no i don't think you could do that, i highly doubth you do that everyday.
