    The bit about radicalization hit hard. I lost my dad to that shit. It got so bad I went no contact and was told I was "starting drama" when he was the one talking about hanging politicians and telling roe protesters to kill themselves. I am very alone now. I don't know where to go from here. I wish I knew someone else who went through this.

      hey i’m a longtime lurker but your comment really struck me. i also lost my dad to radicalization and i feel for you. it’s so lonely especially when you are made out to be the black sheep for daring to go against it. My dad also spews incredibly violent rhetoric and i’ve never understood why it’s so difficult for him to understand why that stuff isn’t ok. that kind of rhetoric is never okay and it’s so sad it’s so pervasive now. you are not alone and there are lots of sad, lonely children out there that just wanted their parents to be good and lovely people. I’m sorry for you, myself, and all the people out there that don’t get experience parents that are loving and kind. I hope you can find peers that fill you with love and light. best wishes from an internet stranger!

      I also experienced this with my dad. He was kinda always obsessed with politics but now it’s insane. He has lost all critical thinking skills while hounding others for “not thinking for themselves” and “not doing research”…. And because he can’t be reasoned with, talking to him always leads to an argument where it can’t end unless you agree with him. And it hurts because we once had really interesting conversations where I felt like he was actually getting to know me. But now every conversation is him convincing me that all the beliefs, desires, and values that I hold is because I’m brainwashed…. All that is to say, I understand what it’s like to have a radicalized dad. It sucks. I’m sorry you deal with it too. Sending love, internet stranger ❤️ you are not alone

    • @LilacMonarch
      @LilacMonarch ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It really is awful. I have an aunt frequently starting family dramas over stupid things like "wearing masks bad" and she's so far down the rabbit hole that she spends hours arguing with someone who literally agrees with her?? Like they're so busy being mad they don't stop to listen to a word of anything someone says to them. I can understand people have different experiences, opinions and beliefs and it's not always easy to deal with those differences. I can understand even having extreme beliefs. But the least you can do is be civil about it. Spreading hate is never the answer. Violence is never the answer.

    To me, it's really weird that most white Americans only knew about systemic racism starting in 2020. I went to a more progressive charter school where they taught us Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States and the 1619 project.
    I guess it's sort of inspiring to see so many people take action about racism as soon as they learned about it since I was taught this stuff in a pre-2020 atmosphere. It was kind of confusing to see that people knew about this stuff and weren't taking dramatic action to end it.
    Anyway, really great video. I loved your tips for leftist radicalization.

    • @vylbird8014
      @vylbird8014 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're also seeing a backlash too. With increasing awareness of systemic racism, there also comes an increasing number of people who were very happy /not/ being aware and would like for things to stay that way - back when everyone knew America was the best country in the world and a beacon of freedom, and anyone who says otherwise is a commie. Simpler times. That's why you're seeing so many politicians make a big campaign point out of fighting the 'woke' and 'liberal academics' they claim are controlling the education system, and passing state laws to keep that sort of thing out of textbooks.

    Watching this video was one of my favorite moments on the internet. It made me laugh multiple times and I loved the points being made and the humanity that shines through your videos. Like, I see a part of you through your art. Your editing, your acting, your scripting, you worked on them to the point where you do amazing things. And because you shared your amazing creations on the internet, it has a ripple effect, much bigger than what either of us can see from our povs. This matters immensely.
    As someone who is watching the process of internet corruption for a bit longer (I'm 29 and I have been chronically online since I was like 8) I've inhabited many different internets. It's all crazy when we deconstruct it; this magic box with billions of consciousness interacting that was just a computer or phone away from us. We had the power of gods on our hands before we were even teenagers.
    Poetically, many of us who were fucked up by the internet in some senses are unfucking it up. You, CJ The X, Bo Burnham, I see many voices who get it talking about it in art with depth.
    Thanks for this video, it means a lot that you did this.

      @@miacole but really, I think we are. I’m 36, have had unfettered internet access since I was 8 (didn’t experience boundaries on the internet until the badly implemented nanny software in ‘99/‘00 in middle school… learned what hentai was in the school library because porn sites were blocked but Sailormoon webrings were not lol).
      Watching the online world crash into real life was a series of confusing, visceral experiences. The first commercial thing I saw was a neopets plush, it was pretty weird to see, like the matrix glitched. Watching the shift from the expectation of complete anonymity to using your real name with your photo and address attached was BONKERS. BBS boards losing their crown as king of internet was a big loss, the only way to avoid the algorithm is to force people to use a frustrating interface that gives equal weight to every user’s hot air.
      I still use the internet as a separate place, like going to Walmart at 3am. People born after the merge are at a real disadvantage, if I saw a TH-camr in real life I would probably unsubscribe, that’s terrifying. The magic mirror is not real! I REFUSE!

    • @squashfei8907

      @@vysharra That's really fascinating to hear, coming from someone who's more of an "after the merge" kind of person. I never got to experience the internet in its "wild west" phase, and by the time that I found the stuff I liked I didn't even consider that there were different "eras" of the internet until watching some internet history videos. I just assumed there was "the real internet" and what my parents showed me as a little kid.

    Hi, failed leftist TH-camr here. Just wanna say that you're not unemployable, you can get out if you want to. That kept me trapped for a long time. I know you were joking, but I remember feeling that way unironically. I had to quit because it was really bad for me. I was living on Twitter, I was stressed, I wasn't sleeping, my relationships were suffering, and it was making me incapable of being creative enough to make videos. I have tried earnestly to leave social media as much as I can stand and I got a job teaching pottery and I'm doing much better. I don't think there's anything to be had for a real left social movement online because the world of social media is so much more constructed and controlled than irl. All the surveillance and control of the irl police state and capitalist economy is just amplified online. I like your videos but don't feel bad if you're doing your best and you don't make a revolution happen, or you can't make people really understand what you're trying to say. hey. I'm late 20s and I've been chronically online since I was 8. that's when socially engineered my way to finding out the family computer password. shortly thereafter i discovered neopets and fanfiction and the 3 hours between the end of the school day and my parents coming home from work became my personal descent into, er...whatever you want to call this particular corner of the sandbox I have the joy to share with you (parasocially) on this fine evening.
    your videos entertain me. I like watching them. they make me feel smart, because I get the joke, and the reference, I only had to rewind twice to pause at the exact right moment to read the stealth screenshots, aren't you proud of me? the jokes are funny, and clever. even when im too high off weed (don't do drugs, child...) and/or too old to get it, I find the aesthetic pleasure of watching certain brains do a thought simply enjoyable regardless of whether I am actually absorbing what's bring said. Come to think of it this is probably why im into film theory video essay youtube. watch a whole movie? why bother when I can watch Dan Olson talk about it...
    but it's more than just enjoying a content you made, though I did
    l have spent the last pandemic and a bit starting my career in pediatric crisis/emergency mental health.
    that has been a rather singular experience that is hard for me to characterize eithout resorting to wordless screams
    your videos (along with the rest of the riding tide of youngins on here) gives me hope in a way little has in the past....ugh. best not to define a timeline, really
    hope has been hard to come by. there's a reason my favorite video essay of the past few years has been How To Be Hopeless by Carlos Maza
    so please understand that when I say I'm very grateful to get to watch something that gives me honest to god Hope after a long ass day at work

    In Paprika there's this scene where the detective is on a computer using the internet, and he meets Paprika there in a bar/website and she says "Don't you think dreams and the internet are similar? They're both areas where the repressed conscious mind vents."
    Nowadays I think that more than ever, as in dreams are not real but a possibility of realization, the same way everything in the internet. The line has become more blurry ultimately, and if it depends on our technocratic overlords that line is to become even blurrier.
    We are incentivized on behaving ways more and more genuine to our repressed selves, and that can be either good or bad, depending on what what kind of person represses.
    That's it, this comment does not have an adequate conclusion. :)

    Highly recommend. You think you need Twitter to "keep up" but you don't. TH-cam cute girls will tell you all about it. You think you need it to keep up with friends, but you don't. You can just text/call them, and be that one friend that "actually reaches out :/".
    And you get a lot, lot, lot less sad.
    If you're an artist, I'm so sorry. You're trapped. You do need social media.

    Not sure if this is intentional or just a part of the video, but you could say this same style of video you used that's snappy and fast is a byproduct of Internet corruption as well!
    Since lots of people don't pay attention to stuff now unless it's fast, to the point and has lots of goofy editing

    • @UniqueHandles
      @UniqueHandles ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s just a part of the video. This editing style has evolved for about a decade. It started off with live-commentaries (think old school PewDiePie just talking over CoD gameplay), then cut-commentaries (FaZe house, Leafy, etc). Originally it was created to reduce the amount of stuttering/repeating oneself but it has been tweaked and refined. It keeps the viewer’s attention as opposed to somebody rambling about a topic, especially in scripted videos (podcasts/livestreams/other live events are an exception to this, but that is a different audience, likely with a longer attention span).

    I think your videos are great Mia. I really think you deserve more subscribers and views, and I don't mean that in the soulless online TH-cam algorithm way, I say that because I think your takes hold so much value and deserve to be heard by many more people.
    I went through the exact same experience in the summer of 2020, and that's when my leftist radicalization began. The way you described it was so accurate. That was the first time I ever actually got an idea of the weight of bigotry. I had just discovered my identity as a trans man so although I knew I was a part of the many groups of people society hates, I had never realized how prejudice actually operated, especially not racism which is so often watered down when you learn about it in school to "racism is bad kids, just be nice to everyone".
    Ironically people like you and CJ are radicalizing me further. Some of your videos have blown my mind completely and I constantly get new perspectives from watching them, which is why I say that you deserve more views. This is not just content for the algorithm, this is worth it. I think it answers your question of if this truly matters. I think it does. These types of videos have shown me many different perspectives and new ideas and things to think about and new ways to view life. They change minds. This really matters.
    And for a sprinkle of hope I do think that while alt-right radicalization is very prominent and worrysome, it has been since like, 2016 internet. Leftist radicalization has been on a massive rise since 2020 and like I said I was affected by it and it truly changed my life, for the better, because it really cleaned up my mind from all the bullshit society had been feeding me for years, the bullshit they feed you to hide all of its issues. And the fact that nowadays being somewhat progressive is viewed as socially acceptable, is mindblowing when you compare it to a few years ago when being bigoted was the norm. I truly do think that leftist radicalization will keep rising. More and more people are becoming aware of massive issues in the world, more than I have ever seen before. We are generally being taught with a leftist viewpoint at school, our teachers are actually talking about things like systemic racism now and other forms of bigotry. I am 16 in the second year of highschool and this is all in Brazil, where I live, which is a third world country with an alt-right president. I never thought I would hear about these subjects in school in my life, because up until 2020 I literally hadn't.
    I think what happened in 2020 changed the world. I agree that it's still not enough, but it's something. Society shifted a little that year. Now progressive views are a little more encouraged, and I think we will keep moving forward, even if things look incredibly worrying right now. I don't say this in the perspective of not worrying because we should worry, but I say that in the sense that being a doomer about it is unhelpful and we need to try our best to remain hopeful if we want real change. I once saw someone say that apathy is the new denial. I think it's so true because you can even see that in the way Twitter, the News, TH-cam and other social medias only show you negative world news. It's like they're all working to crush our souls and get rid of our resolve to do anything.
    So I like to think about the fact that years ago women were being burned to death because they were THOUGHT to be witches, for example. That and other horrendous historical events, because if we managed to move on from something so fucking absurd and unbelievable surely we can move on from the shit being thrown at us now. I agree with the theory that humanity works in cycles of good and bad, but I think we still ultimately end up moving forward and that's inevitable. It takes determination and a lot of fighting to make it happen though.
    Videos like this help make the change happen. Even if it seems they do nothing, I think they ultimately contribute towards real change in society, even if it's just a little bit. It's through content like this that I got here after all, and I imagine that many other people's views are changing because of it just like me.
    I don't know why I rambled so much, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I appreciate what you do and this video made me think a lot. About bad things and good things as well. And this comment is the conclusion that I've reached, and I think I needed this because I had been wondering about this same topic as of late. I hope you have a nice day today.

      @cadb8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This was such a nice comment to read. What we're doing commenting here matters too, in similar ways.
      I've also been radicalized to the left in the last few years, and I know the feeling you talk about of finally hearing counter-narratives to all the bullshit. I believe we intuitively feel something is off with the world, but we are constantly gaslighted into believing either "things are fine" or that we should blame a scapegoat and punch down.
      Anarchism helped me seek coherence between what I see from the world, what I believe with my heart and what I analyze with my mind. It makes sense to me: there are systems pitting us against each other and ourselves, in order to make us divided, self-hating and easy to control. Destroying them takes a lot of unlearning and new learning.
      As another brazillian, I think we'll have tough years ahead, even if we win the immediate battle of getting rid of Bolsonaro. Despite that more and more I have hope, people have been fighting forever and we are building upon resistance from the past and linking it towards resistance from the future. We are never alone when fighting for a better world.
      I think you might like an interview podcast on youtube called Az Ideias, it's not mia-cole-esque, except for the part of having people who have a lot to say and do it well.
      All of this matters. The internet touches real people, and I hope both you and Mia know that I was touched by your sincerity and willingness to share it.
      It can get much better. Choosing hope is an act of defiance.

    Very cool ideas here! The New Models podcast gang refers to a similar phenomenon called 'devirtualization' in which content generated in online spaces leaks out into physical ones, like someone wearing a wojak t shirt, but then we can get revirtualization where, say, that picture of someone wearing a wojak t shirt becomes a meme for being cringe. A better real world example of this is how bronycon devirtualized an online my little pony community and then revirtualized as a notorious event online.
    Another great idea that I'm seeing you touch on a little bit is what artist Joshua Citarella calls "the slow red pill" in which radical online groups create meme pages that attract large followings, then sprinkle more radical content among the regularly scheduled programming, subtly making the algorithms of the followers more radical in the process. You followed the page for an antifeminism video, and ended up on the other end talking about white supremacy.
    I bring these up just because you're totally not alone in seeing internet culture in this way and there's some great jumping off points here to dig deeper into this kind of analysis. Some of these communities are on a similar pulse coming to similar conclusions. Great video! keep it up!

    Why is "is making video essays to post on the internet good" even a question?
    Its a utilitarian way to look at art when art is more than just that...and i do feel like content is art...or it can be.. i feel like a lot of video essays are... sure they spark discussion but Get Out started discussions and shit, its still art and valuable on merits aside from its political nature... and should its merits only be judged on whether it ended racism? Or should the worth of a song like polly by nirvana be judged only by if it brought about actual change and ended SA? Its a weird thing to expect art to fix everything and deem it useless if it doesnt....fucking kendrick just made a whole album bout this shit go listen to it
    Utubers are not leftist messiahs who should only make videos that spark political change.. theres so many more layers to politics than just youtube videos
    Theres so many leftist people ik who dont even watch video essays like i do
    And so asking urself if you making video essays is good for society is kinda dumb imo... if it doesnt create active hurt and hate in the world against people, then its worth existing cuz its art
    This is art. It has more value than how many leftist babies it births.
    And me saying this is not to take away from the discussion of the left pipeline vs the alt right pipeline...
    This is just kinda a response majorly to the last section... and also why is like every other video u make about if ur job is beneficial for society or not, not to be parasocial but like get a therapist or something idk

      Um... no. Like, actually fuck all this. Mia, idk if you're reading this, but if you are, please continue working through what you're doing on here (and what we're all doing on here) and how to do the most good you can with it. That's what Kendrick's album was actually about: him *figuring out the process* of what he's been accomplishing and what he should do next. Not him saying "I can't solve racism, so fuck it, art over everything." And like, honestly his shit was just as messy and grappling as yours (if not more so), and that's a big part of what made it worth listening to. And the messy questioning is the best thing about this video too.
      Like, just speaking personally, i don't really care about the art (like, I literally didn't even watch most of this video; just listened to it). I care about people who are willing to tell stories and show their journey and share their ideas so others can learn and grow from it. I don't think the Noah Samsen to leftist voting block pipeline is gonna work, but you reflecting on 2020 and showing how you got to that thought is huge. And for more about that: I SUPER HIGHLY recommend the book Glitch Feminism by Legacy Russell, because I think it expands on the biggest thing that's missing in your analysis of this issue. In short, I can describe it as a book that shows how the internet allows many leftists (including myself) to find and strive for the best versions of ourselves and create communities that we want to exist.

    I agree the internet corrupts as much as it helps. The "glamorous", fake people type things are bleeding out to me- but I fight it. Once you know who you are, the internet can't brainwash you into being something you aren't. Now, I try my best to get into things that represent me more. Great vid.
