  • I've been into pickup upgrade videos recently. This time, I've upgrade the S770PB with Original Ibanez INFs with Dimarzio Air Norton + Tone Zone and Seymour Duncan Jazz + JB. Let's hear them and see if you can tell any difference.
    I tried to cover Joe Satriani's "Love Thing"

    Thanks, you made me save some money as my infinity pickups are nothing less than the other two.

      Everybody shits on the Infinity pickups but they're actually good pickups. They sound like Dimarzios to my ear. I have a Tone Zone in one of my older Ibanez guitars and I recently plugged that guitar in after years of not playing it and the Tone Zone was way over the top in everything. Too much bass, mids and treble. I had to adjust the EQ on the amp and tone everything down. I guess my tastes have changed. One of my cheapy Ibanez guitars is a RG450M (Violent Violet), the good version from 2014 with the 3 piece neck and Edge Zero 2. It has Infinity 3 and 4 pickups in it and they sound fine through my amp. It's a great guitar that I bought off ebay 6 or 7 years ago for $250.
      I've been playing a long time and I can say work on your technique and get a good amp. You can do a lot of tone shaping with a good amp. If you record you can do even more shaping in post production. At the end of the day I have heard a lot worse pickups than the Infinity pickups. I can make pretty much any pickup sound decent if you give me enough time to EQ it. Eventually everything will sound like what I hear in my head. It helps if your tone is in your head, meaning you have a default sound you like that you can tweak anything to sound like. I like low to mid output pickups, I can always roll in more gain at the amp. High output pickups hit the front of the amp harder and produce a harsher sound to my ear and that can be hard to dial out at times.
      I will say I don't like the Ibanez Quantum pickups, I played a guitar with them in it and they sound harsh and lifeless to me.

      Inf > Quantums
      I kept my Inf3 in my RG and it has become my favorite neck pickup

    The INF's are pretty good! Don't see a huge need to upgrade.

    Nice vid... I like how you switch pickups in a continuous song. Well done.
    If you listen to this vid without looking at the pickup name, I'm pretty sure nobody can figure out which one is which.
    All this after market pickup business is BS in my opinion. I prefer the CAP-VM in my RG721 over the DiMarzio in my RG652

    There are only a SMALL handful of guitars I've owned over my 38 years of playing/teaching/buying/selling/building guitar that remained "factory" because the choices were perfect from the factory. Kramer's in the mid 80's were my only completely factory guitars due to the straplock system. 85 pacer, 86 Stagemaster standard, 89 stagemaster deluxe.
    I just acquired a 07 Ibanez S520EX which has these pickups your discussing. I think their fantastic, I wouldn't change a thing. Factory keeper ! And im now (for now) using those little rubber strap saver doo dads. 22 fret wizard 2..... forget about it. Could have saved a fortune on guitars. And why am i just now discovering that bearing supported super floyd rose style bridge. Between that, the neck profile, the weight, the balance, the killer pickups with the killer 5 way switch options.... throw in the adjustable rear claw and the zero point bar keeping bending notes (especially unison bends) in check with the other notes. Pffttt, you may as well call this thing the perfect guitar.
    Ahhh, I nearly forgot about the intonation tool included that lives on the front.

    I can buy an INF loaded RG pickguard very cheap, this vid made the decision very easy... INFs are great.

    I've always thought that the INF pups sounded good on clean amp settings, and even with a little bit of light crunch. But IMO they sound muddy on high gain settings, which is why I've always swapped INF pickups for either a set of Seymour Duncans or DiMarzios. Depending on your playing style and tonal preferences, Ibanez INF (and even Quantum) pickups might work just fine. So I agree, no need to swap them out if they sound good to you.

      @lone-wolf-1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, found it too: the Inf1 and Inf2 set sound muddy, no string definition and too much like an oboe at high gain. But at cleaner settings nice and warm, good for jazz and blues, to rock.
      Swapped them for Tesla Plasma3- very clear, lot of trebble but still warm and if needed screaming devils.
      On my Ibanez GRG140- I do like the Infinity R pups. Round and warm sounding, not trebbly but enough clarity.

      All sound 99% same especially with higher gain. I just throw a pedal in front sometimes if I want to change tone or tighten up bottom end. The pro's would shred any pickups and make them sound good imho.

    If it were up to me, I'd mix it up and go with the JB Bridge and the INF Neck combo, surprisingly! Nice blend of everything that way...clarity, character, etc. The JB really takes the INF Bridge sound and gives it a little "more" of everything...body, roundness, punch, etc. I thought the Tone Zone was only "ok"...best kept to soloing than rhythm and softer playing. Among the neck pickups, I thought the Jazz would perform better than it did, but it fell in the middle to my ears. The Air Norton didn't really stand out at all and was the warmest/least clear/least inspiring of the bunch to me. Meanwhile, the INF Neck was really balanced and clear and had a lot more character than it's companion INF in the bridge did, in my opinion. :)

  • @springbloom5940

    The Duncan has the fullest 'mellowest' tone and the DM has the most clarity. There is a definite difference, the question is how much that difference is worth. Personally, if someone were giving them away, Id take the Duncan or Ibanez in the bridge, but definitely the DM in the neck.

  • @bpdarragh
    @bpdarragh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That Neck air norton sounded a bit more full in the clean. But it seemed that generally the INF pickups, whilst not that different, seemed to be lower in volume slightly. But overall that air norton in the neck (clean or driven) sounded sweet. But whether worth swapping? I dont think the difference is that huge, given the cost and time needed to swap out. Could probably do a bit of dialling in on your amp. But a great demo, same song, different pickups, clearly a lot of thought/effort went into this. Thanks

    Hello. I have ibanez guitar. Humbucker, single, humbucker configuration with 5 way toggle switch. just like your guitar in this video. I would just like to put seymour duncan humbucker (pegasus) into bridge. Please help me with the wiring

  • @helixworld
    @helixworld 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I like the INF2 bridge humbucker. To me, the Jazz is nicest in the neck. The differences aren't so big in this demo, but I think some of the other pickups are a bit more harsh and aggressive sounding.

    Nice vid bro. I think the INF pickups didnt really get a full go at it. Im sure it was unintentional on your behalf but the INF sections seemed to be the least interesting parts in the song. ie other pickups got the harmonic rhythm change bits behind the solo, so it always sounds sweeter with that harmonic change. I actually like the INfs from what I heard in the bridge pos tbh. anyway, cheers, was interesting.

    Hmm. Great demo bro. So hard to tell. The INF (stock bucks) sound, to me, very close to the DiMarzio Tone Zone. As where the Seymour's sounded a little fuller, but not by much. They all sound pretty wickedly great. Great playing helps too. I so want that natural shade of S series. Lol

      It's kinda funny, cuz I disliked all of the demos on INFs AND the Tone zone. They sound too bloated/smooth , but I can see why Ibanez installed them into their new line.
      I preferred the rougher cuts and several more harmonic layers of JB and Jazz. What Dimarzio do u think the V8 resembles most too? I also prefer the V8 over the tone zone.

    I'm not saying you did anything wrong here. However, it's only a test for recorded sound. Play live in a band and you will see the the inf are too harsh loud live. The best pickup I ever owned is the jazz neck when live.
