Ibanez Premium RG 870 Before & After Dimarzio Pickups Upgrade

  • I have decided to upgrade the Ibanez RG Premium 870QMz with Dimarzio Air Norton at the neck & Tone Zone at the bridge. This is how they sound differently. All the settings are consistent on both before and after. The only thing that is not very consistent is my playing. I have done the soldering work myself for the first time in my life so it could sound better if it were done by professional guitar tech.
    For those who commented about the Air Norton direction. I installed it the same way as those guitars that Ibanez have it preinstalled on all of their guitars.
    For example, this J Custom www.ibanez.co.jp/products/u_eg...
    and another one www.ibanez.co.jp/products/u_eg...

      ibanez stock pickups are amazing, as far as cheap proprietaries go anyway
      same goes for bass

      Dimarzio has much warmer sound, stock pickup sharp like samurai sword, Dimarzio like serpent knife:) Erick Johnson should be glad for this replcement;)

    Thanks for sharing. I guess people at Dimarzio and people at Ibanez have different opinions. I looked at all Ibanez guitars that have Air Norton preinstalled and found that all of them have the screw polepieces facing the neck. I'll put the link to the pictures from Ibanez website in the video description.

    Yes, from the video it's not remarkably different, but when you actually play it, you can really tell it's significantly different. I didn't really have to squeeze it so hard to play the same licks as it was before.

    there is quite some difference but not tonally but harmonic-wise... and i guess the biggest difference is notable when playing the guitar and getting the feel for them.

    stock pickups sound like they have a little more high end and the Dimarzio' s sound fatter to me. Depends on what sound your looking for. I was going to replace the stock Inf pickups in my RG470, but I think I'll keep them now. Thanks!

    I have great ears and they sound close to me. Especially when he is just strumming. I can definitely tell a difference in the single notes. Keep in mind though that you are switching out Dimarzio's for Dimarzio's. The RG premiums come with Dimarzio made pickups already, not cheapo stock stuff.

    I was trying to play a part of Still hurt by Marco Sfogli

  • @andreil1234
    @andreil1234 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    There should be a more pronounced difference, I believe some direct comparison into a clean channel of an amp would perhaps have revealed more. Anyway, if the stocks are CAP-VM, those should be at least on par with Dimarzio/IBZ, which are really really good stock pickups. Not really worth upgrading unless you want something wildly specific from the pups. You can tailor the sound using preamp/effects/eqs and cab/cabsim.
    The Tonezone sounds unusually bright at times IMHO - although you can easily recognize it by its mid fatness.

  • @alvarg
    @alvarg 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    certainly sounds better with the dimarzio pickups much fuller sound i think quick question what is your guitar action set to?

  • @alvarg
    @alvarg 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    ideally you want an action e.g the distance the string are from the frets to be low enough to play comfortable while being high enough so you get a good tone and at best no fret buzz

  • @alvarg
    @alvarg 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    sure im in australia so i use milimetres, i generally like fairly low action so around 2-2.5mm on the low 6 string i downtune though so i need it 2.5 usually, and about 1.2-1.5mm on the high e. im getting your guitar is a store setup?

    i have crappy connection so i'm not going to switch to 1080 like i should, but i will say the stock pickups sound surprisingly good. yeah the replacements beat em out; nothing like that classic DiMarzio combo, but still, props to DiMarzio for making decent copies of (i'm pretty sure) probably the same pup set.

    to me it is noticeable that the dimarzio is clearer hands down, the stock has the sound echoing everywhere and any sustained note vanishes in precision. the stock doesn't lose in volume though and that is where maybe most people prefer the stock maybe... at the end the dimarzio has a more accurate and compressed sound aiming at sustain, accuracy and precision.
    try to record in studio with the stock pickups and the dimarzio ones and the difference will be much more obvious. for the one playing it makes all the difference!

    A bit more clarity on DiMarzio. I'm amazed. So Ibanez made their stock pickup based on DiMarzio. I'm pretty sure the sound difference would be much more obvious if you were replacing them with Seymour Duncan PU, or Bare Knuckle, for instance.
    Plot twist: the tone is in your fingers.

    • @cpamiseso
      @cpamiseso 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stupid me, most Premium Ibanez come in Dimarzio/Ibz PU which of course should come close with the original Dimarzio. Hence, the 'no difference' of which some comments posted earlier...
      But then again, the tone is in your fingers.
