Ibanez Pickup vs Tone Zone Pickup
For your (and my) convenience:
0:13 vs 1:28
0:55 vs 2:09
Thank you my friend.
Yeah man, thanks for taking the time to do this. I have guitars with each. I've tried comparing them but seeing they are on different models I have never been able to fully discern the difference. This format makes it really easy to do so. Liking the INF2 a little more after this :-)
I completely agree, I'm impressed with the colors that are available now as well!
I'm glad you included your comment at the end, you tube compresses the audio, and it's hard to distinguish details. Tone Zone's are a perfect all around bridge pickup. Higher gain pickups have difficulties with clarity when used with effects, but the Tone Zone handles effects with ease. Thanks for your review.
Love the tone zone but I was surprised how well you made the inf sound. Great work!
The INF pu's are really not all that bad, and i think if they were put up against epi, squire,LTD,etc
stock pu's they would be the best of the bunch.
Thanks for posting this comparison! Its a superb way to compare! Though a newbie in this area - to my ears the ToneZone gives a tighter and more compressed sound which shows when using hi-gain, especially on the highs. That said for some reason I am able to get pinch harmonics much for effortlessly on the IBX pickups than the Dimarzios.
In think a big reason its hard to tell the difference is the amount of processing I used, perhaps I should have went with something more organic like just a simple amp to show the differences. The tone zone has more clarity (not as muddy) as the INF2. Having said that, the INF2 is a really good stock pickup and if you want a drastic difference in sound I would probably choose a difference pickup. I never really felt that my INF2 was missing something, just that it could be clearer :) Cheers!
Very helpful video. I didn't expect Tone Zone to sound so good on clean.
I've listened several times and I think they both sound great. It almost sounds like to me that the INF2 has better harmonics, or that the pinch harmonics were more pronounced, but I can't tell for sure. I'm listening thru a nice set of headphones though.. :-)
Me too...i really cannot tell the difference...through good headphones
Heard that too even with the rythm
I'm in love with the Tone Zone pup, same thing here. For a more early Van Halen, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, or Michael Lee Firkins kind of tone, I can dial all of those up. If I want more metal sounds, the other is good, or Duncan DIstortions. There's really no "better" but my taste is that TZ color and how it huffs and puffs and breathes.
Great video! I think the Tone Zone has denser texture, as if a visual waveform was less broken, tighter and less brittle.
I just dropped a tone zone into my peavey Wolfgang and I love it
Wow, that would be amazing - you'll never need another guitar again!
Cool review,The Dimarzio definately sounds more crisp and has more definition in the notes.BTW I love the riffs your playin(distortion).
Whilst the INF2 is a good pickup, I could hear the loudness and extra presence the Tone Zone has over it. I agree with you on the mids and treble being more controlled thereby more defined especially with high gain. Nice vid.
My thoughts exactly. Thanks for the kind words.
A pleasure mate. I recorded two video demos of the D-Activator X bridge pup I installed in my RG570. If you would take a look at it and let me know what you think of it's performance, I'd appreciate it :) You'll find them under my username RolanTHUNDER.
I really love the tone in this guitar.. but I cannot choose between the ibanez guitars... THEY'RE ALL AWESOME!
The Dimarzio sounds a lot clearer and brighter on cleans, and very pronounced and smooth on distortion.
I think that it may feel better to play than the inf2, because of the higher output and probably just an all around more quality pickup.
Really great demo thanks for the video.
Wow thank you so much Dragos! That's very helpful.
The INF is missing all that headroom. The sound of the TZ is full, open and clear. The INF is thin one dimensional and fizzy. Love my tone zone.
I actually bought a tone zone. I reckon it's not everyone's cup of tea. but I honestly love it.
The Tone Zone was definitely the one. it sounded fuller and had more clarity to it. you have a great distortion going on.
I got the 3250mz-dy which is basically the same, Dimarzio Air Norton sounds great, Tone Zone ain't the best for hi-gain rhythm and you may find it a bit noisy, but sounds really cool too. Playing is awesome, very comfortable neck and the bridge has great stability, u can spend all the day making dive bombs and u won't get out of tune
It's a little lighter than a strat - so I would say yes it's pretty light. Its a very light ash, but I don't believe its an authentic 'swamp ash' that you would find in higher end ash guitars. It definitely maintains a lot of the ash characteristics though.
Looking for this guitar for years now. Almost vanished. Damn!
i have a guitar like that..ibanez rg470ahz..problem is im in the philippines.
In hindsight, your right, I should have done the tones side by side - thanks for your suggestion.
great guitar sound, tone zone sounds amazing
INF2
clean 0:13 DIRTY 0:55
DIMARZIO
CLEAN 1:28 DIRTY 2:09
The Infinity pickups shine much better than the "Tone Zone" with distortion. The pinch harmonics sound amazing. However, Tone Zone sound like a professional recording when playing clean and the "Infinity" sound like shit clean. Over all I'd go with the "Tone Zone. I believe they would sound even better than the "Infinity" pickups with a subtle amp adjustment with the added distortion. DiMarzio have always been my go to pickups. For me the "Blues" pickups are best because I like southern rock on the clean & dirty channel. But if I was wanting to achieve that John Mayer tone, I'd definitely go with those "Tone Zone" pickups. Clean they sound totally amazing.
Awesome, I will look further into that for sure!:)
At .23 and 1.39, on the E minor you can hear the clarity, note definitions and higher bass output of the TZ, which I like.On overdrive they both sounded similar through my earphones. Wonder if Dimarzio provided the design to Ibáñez?Nice Demo.
Thanks friend ,greatings from Brazil
Tone zone for the win. Nice playing!
The Tone Zone sounds fuller than the INF2, but both pickups are nice!
+ESPLover™ funny, cuz to me it sounds like the INF2 has more low end and the tone zone sounds brighter to me, which I like. Seems like if you tweak a bit, you can get pretty much the same sounds out of the two.
Nice playing man, I have a guitar with those inf pickups in it. There's a vid of me using it with a Hughes and kettner amp. I love the sound!
Thank you for replying so quickly!
@projectgoatse Your explanation of the contrast between the two pickups is right on the money - I don't think it could be explained any better.
Is it just me or both pick ups are almost sounds the same. Except for the dimarzio slightly more clear in single tones.
Yea ibanez are my favourite aswell.. but I just can't figure out which one to buy, besides I don't live that close to a music store, so when I'm finally there I have the hard decision.. Looking at the premium ones at the moment too.. I've also looked upon the fenders with HSS configuration and a floyd rose.. would be perfect if the neck would be faster and 24 frets..
why is the tone zone a good lead players pickup only? it sounds great for rhythm. big and clear and middy with high gain.
tone zone have a great sound ! nice work !
Nice video dude! Keep it up!
It has been in my experience that all pu's sound pretty much the same when using a modeler.
A real tube amp makes a big difference and no i am not a tube snob, i like modelers but they are not in the same league as a real tube amp.
Pc Gaming 5150 I have two guitars I can compare. Rg6005(emg 57/66) and rg920 (dimarzio/ibz) both clear and clean but the 920 can harmonic better while the 6005 hits harder
Pc Gaming 5150 I agree, I have
Tele, Strat, les paul, prs, esp, and ibenez guitars with humbuckers/single coils, cheap/expensive guitars and they all sound pretty similar when playing through my modeler amp.
I just have the guitars for the feel/ style and look.
prefered the inf2 for the distorted sound (like you said good for a lead guitar), but the tone zone is better for cleans and has less-compressed good dist sound, so in the end I'd go for the tone zone. More versatile.
Have to agree with the findings of the vid. In high gain the tone zones cut through a little better. Close though
All we are hearing is your amp and effects. Clean means clean
Nice video! To me, the INF2 sounded more like shimmery Strat-type effect. I thought both of them were nice. A noticeable difference to me, but hard to choose in some ways.
that's what i noticed with my INF3 and 4's. they don't really sound too much like hum buckers... they're kind of scooped from the get-go and don't have all that high of output. not that that's a bad thing. an Ibanez still sounds like an Ibanez, with INF4's or Tone Zones. my uncle sometimes plays his RG350 through my Marshall and pedalboard which i use a RG3550MZ on, and they sound damn near identical.
INF sounds good enough to me :p
I have 2 already and was considering a Jackson for the new one I was going to buy...but...well Jackson's gone downhill since Fender bought them out, and my other alternative was a Musicman. (Almost went with it too) but decided to get another Ibanez and have custom pickups. It was cheaper and Ibanez have always been my favorite designed guitars.
I plug my guitar into a Line 6 USB interface which goes directly into my computer - from there I use Guitar Rig 5 processor to get my guitar tone and effects
I love the ash body - it's a great change from your usual woods everyone's using, which makes your tone and guitar unique. I've come to the conclusion that the wood is a light ash that fits somewhere between swamp and northern hardwood ash (because it produces sound somewhere between light and warm - slightly closer to light though). It's definitely brighter than mahogany and slightly brighter than basswood. I don't think you'll regret your buy, but I'd test it out first though.
I prefer INF for a gritty mean sound and TZ for more rounded friendly tone.
Only a trained guitar player ear can discern the MASSIVE difference in tone when comparing these pickups. Th DiMarzio Tone Zone is the best pickup ever in the history of mankind.
Warm tone 100%
Sounds awesome. What model is your Ibanez?
I like the Tone Zone... but sounds like you've got the gain and compression too maxed to hear a difference in the pickups.
The Tone Zone definitely has more bass and lower mids than the INF. On the cleans, the Tone Zone sounds open and the INF sounds boxy. Distorted the Tone Zone has more low mid crunch. I listened to this with a pair of good Audio Technica headphones.
Over a 1000 views thanks guys.....I didn't really expect anyone to watch this.
I think you would like the Duncan JB TB-4 better than TZ.
i could not tell a real difference! if there was a difference, it is very small....not even noticeable. makes me wonder just how much different expensive pick-ups area compared to say IBZ or INF pups....thanks for the demo!
well done!
TZ fits your swamp ash RG better than stock pickup, there's no doubt about it. For mahogany guitars INFs could be a better choice.
That inf2 sounds like my cheapo korean made pickups. not exactly the same but it has similiar tones. Inf 2 on distortion sounds a bit bassy on the low frequencies while the tonezone kinda' mid-high range.
It is indeed F-Spaced

thank you that helped
nice guitar bro
so should i buy an ibanez s420 i really love that guitar but many people say inf pick ups are bad sounding
With that rig I liked the INF2 better.........
I think the INF2 sounds soo punishing compared to the tone zone.. And a bit more difficult to get a really good sound out of it.
how did you get that distorted sound ? i'ts stunning man
they sound about the same the tone zone just has higher clean output
Ibanez INF2 better DIRTY but DiMarzio Tone Zone better CLEAN.
rock it brother
What kind of amp/pedal are u using? Sounds awesome!
After really listening very closely with expensive phones you can hear the TONE ZONE has a meaner tone with more growl and sizzle. plus has a more complex tone to it.
The INF2 is not bad at all and i think that if you used one with a 1meg pot it would probably be even "closer" to the TONE ZONE.
These days the Asian pu's are not the junk they were years ago, today they are making them quite good,
Now having said that overall the dimarzio is better. they have been making pu's for many year now, since 1972 and have made them for numerous pro's.
Just remember a pickup is a lot like a microphone, so a cheap copy of the SHURE 57 or 58 will never be as good as the real deal same goes for pu's.
while the asian made ones will get the job done there is a reason the top pro's are opting for dimarzio or duncans,
dude what amp are you using sounds killer.
tone zone gave me the extra ummphh, please try using a Fred, such a classic.
woo thats a beautifull guitar...
I actually thought the INFs were significantly brighter and twangy(almost annoyingly so when played clean). The Tone Zones sounded more like a PAF to me, much meatier bass.
Tone zone best
I think to buy this guitar but fixed model 471Ahz ...This guitar is light or heavy ??? My back ask to you....i have a Cort Aero 11 and is very light couse the shape is almost a Ibanez S series, but has no sustain as i like.....This is ash or swamp ash ??? Swamp ash is very light and i will love
Hi,
I recently bought a new Ibanez S series Prestige, with DiMarzio Tone Zone Humbucker at the Bridge. I did notice that on any Gain settings, I do get it sounding very muddy, lacks punch, and there's this buzz / humm (like the noise an Air Condition unit makes), when I mute the guitar (note: no hum of clean tones settings). I read up about it, and its not the power / where its plugged in, as I've tried it out at many different locations. Any suggestions?
hey man nice to see and hear that...good job. please, what gauge of strings set are use? and this is a standard tunning or half step down /Eb/ ? thank you for your answer, dude...
Hello, very goog demo ; what are the delay and its settings at 0:55 ? Thanks
Hey dude what pedals did you use? Thanks for seeing my video!
at the and...wich's is better? TONE ZONE O INF2?
I'm considering to buy the Ibanez RG 3550mz in white, what do you think about that?:)
Hi, what kind of Tone Zone is that? F-Spaced? please say the exact model :)
nice man!
So, did you hear a difference? The zone might have just a tad more clarity but that's it. IMHO. Don't believe the hype~
Eu estaba usando o "Demora Solo" Preset dentro do Guitar Rig 5 programa VST. A maioría dos timbres limpos en Guitar Rig non son moi impresionantes, pero os tons sucios e modelos de distorsión son excelentes. Espero que axude vostede.
I'm searching this RG470 for years now in Germany.
Help anyone?
which pickup i should go for, in di marzio, instead of inf2, and 1, coz i cant find it anywhere in india
Hello ,can you tell me what is your dirt effects and how is your set up, or amp ? i really like your tone sound .thank you so much :)
you are playing through a 5150 yes ?
I like the inf2 haha
But tone zone sounds more powerfull
FOR ME INF2 ARE MORE COMPRESSED..AND BETTER THAN TONE ZONE!I
in my opinion inf2 sounded better in distortion
i think it has more mids and less treble than tonezone
The best thing I ever did was pull the inf pickups out of my ibanez.
